A Proposition Open for Discussion

I have an idea. Kelne made me think of something that should be done much more than it apparently is.
The Doman Guard gets no love. Despite the fact that there's a large percentage of PCs who are members of the guard.
Isn't it odd that more RPs don't consist of members of the guard going out and doing their job? As it is, they see more action off-duty than on-duty. In a city like Doma that makes no damn sense. I'd imagine the guard would have plenty to do.
Does this make sense to anyone else? Seems like it wouldn't be that hard. "Hey, [insert plot event] is happening. I'm looking for PCs that are members of the Doman Guard."
I'm not promising anything either, just presenting an idea that I'll only do if the requisite GM shortage on RPGWW rears its ugly head. <p>-------------------------

I believe this has been tried before, and it ended up not working very well for various reasons.
I'd like to work with Kai on it, though, perhaps. :( <p>

Alternately, there is a possibility for a Nobles RP as well, with potential for intrigue and machinations and whathaveyou. I mean, someone has to be running the kingdom, right? And with the apparent presence of at least one lawyer, it is not an absolute monarchy...
Anyway, I have no characters in the guard, but would be willing to participate in such a game anyway as a catalyst/client. <p><span style="font-size:xx-small;">"It's in the air, in the headlines in the newspapers, in the blurry images on television. Shini: Could you tell me where it's been tried before? I wasn't thinking that a whole lot would be different. I mean, the structure of the RP/plot wouldn't be drastically different. Just that the occupations of the PC's might be important.
Priam: I don't know about a Nobles RP, but the idea is interesting. I'm not asking for volunteers just yet, but if it turns out I'm the only GMly person of a mind to do it, I'll definitely make sure I keep you in the loop. <p>-------------------------

For somewhat obviously biased reasons, sounds interesting to me. Though I'm kinda curious what went wrong with the last attempt there, Shini.

Ha hah.. I've been bad for "just coming off work" in the few RPs I've been in.
INTERESTED, THOUGH.

Well, can't say the idea doesn't intrigue me, at least. <p>ChibiUrusai: *chomps* I am underage. ^-^

I'd be interested well enough, but I'm not sure about avaliability. Just because crap's always happening around here. Whee. <p>

So the impression that I'm getting is that this wouldn't present any more problems than a normal RP. That's more or less what I was expecting. I wasn't anticipating huge canon issues or anything, but if there was some reason why using the Guard more directly is uncommon, I was hoping to know.
Anyone know why this isn't done more often? Seems like a straight-forward way to pick PCs, as opposed to, "Uh, I don't know. Someone posted a notice in a tavern. You saw it and uh... here you are."
I just thought that being a member of the Guard ought to mean something, change something. As it stands, the Guard tends to be a background presence, used either as a reward or punishment for some PCs (or alternately as an OOC device to regulate the plots of others).
Doing an RP with the Guard didn't occur to me until recently, and I guess I'm not the only one who didn't immediately think to do it. *shrug* <p>-------------------------

I've been in quite a few RPs where many of the PCs are in the guard, on duty and Non-Guard PCs just end up getting roped in due to luck or being known by said guard guys.
Also: I see the guard being sort of understaffed, when it comes to 'special assignments' and thus they turn to mercenaries; and said mercs do their job with the help of a guard or two to make sure things get done 'right'.

Dunno if there's all that many PCs in the guard. There's Jeridan and Jak and, much higher up, Griff. Of course, if you include the knights you get some more PCs. I know that Dave has a guard character, but I can't remember who it is for the life of me.

Zero has the right of how they go down. There are a few characters in the Guard, but getting them all together tends to be fairly tricky, which is the main barrier to Guard-only RPs. Generally it ends up being a Guardsman or two with assorted people interesting in helping. <p>---------------------------

I'd be interested. I don't think I have any PCs at the moment in the guard, but I don't see how that necessarily excludes me from making or shoving in a character anyway. <p>

Indeed. I'd have no problem creating a Guard character for just such purposes. And there's always the possibility that a couple of non-guard characters would be recruited based on specialist talents, or just to make up numbers.
Another thing to consider. While the majority of characters aren't in either the Guard or the army, I imagine that a fair few hold reserves in the militia in case everything goes pear-shaped. Particularly former resistance members. Such characters might well be contacted on occasion regarding special missions, as would any mercs with whom the castle has developed a relationship. This means that there's quite a bit of potential for mixed groups. <p>Centuries of threats of "I'll turn you all to stone!" and "I'll knock you all down!" have caused Domans to develop an instinct to form small groups. For safety, I assure you. – Keir</p>

I could see Dia making a deal with some of her friends on the guard, or Aya. Because she's stupid enough to make a general "hey, if you need me, just give me a ring" type statement. <p>

Of course, it seems as if Kamos can't get away from the Guard when it comes to anything that pays even a decent amount of money anyway. No luck for him. XP <p>ChibiUrusai: *chomps* I am underage. ^-^

I have at least one character in the Guard, and possibly 2. <p>-----
