Ethereal End RP recruitment

Unread postby L33tTyi » Sat Aug 13, 2005 2:31 pm

I'v had a story I work on from time to time when I'm not writing some of my other short storys. I'v had a good idea of what would happen from one end to the other, yet always seemed to lack any feel for characters. It always seemed more like a world than a story, so to that end I decided to try and make it an RP. Just so you know I'm not talking a crock of steaming brown goodness, I have a bit of an intro to go with it. Anyone interested?

Background: The world, before the change, was set, solid and familiar, just as we knew it. All mysteries in life had been erradicated by the gradual and inevitable rumble of science and progress. Little was left unknown, the only mysteries in life those of religion and spirituality.

September 30th, in the year 2010, has now been known as the time of "change". The northern lights, normally appearing in the far north or south of the planet, begun to be seen clear as day across the entire globe. Less like the colorful displays we were so used to, these lightshows looked more like rifts in the very sky, often bringing heavy winds and sharp rain and bathing the landscape in an ethereal, otherwordly light.

As the inevitable march of time wore on, "change" laid waste to our world. Subtle at first, the land was the first to shift. Gradual, yet when compared to natural tectonic movement a veritable landslide, changes occured to coasts and landscapes. Hills became mountains, coastlines shifted in size and shape and rivers changed course. Typically these changes were explained away with new found theory. Global warming and major planetary instability were claimed to be the cause. Our thinking was shattered in Febuary, 2011.

From the poor to the rich, from politician to shop floor assistant, all awake to the news. Downtown new york no longer exists. In a three square mile radius from the centre of the city now lay a forrest of trees unlike any we'd seen before.

Just to make this absolutely clear, this is simply an intro and a thread to find if anyone is interested, this isn't the story as a whole or the only thing I have to work from. Once I know if anyones interested I'l post up the rules and the world details.
______________________________________________________

And now because I'm not only a nit-picker, but I'm on speed and I need stuff to do until 8 AM so I can go out and get some bagels before class:

I have absolutely no idea what you want. If you're posting fiction, please do so in the fiction area.

If you're pitching for an RP, few can honestly tell you if they're interested or not because you aren't asking anyone to do anything. You've just given a world setting and a basic attitude.

You might want to clean up your English a bit. No offense meant, of course, but there ARE spots where you're a bit unclear, and as a GM you NEVER want to be unclear. You can be clearly ambiguous, but your wording irks me a bit.

Since I'm an interrmittant Grammar Nazi, I'm now going to take a crack at your Intro and try to see if I can clean up the language.

Background
The world, before The Change, was just as we know it now: set, solid, and familiar. All of the mysteries of the world had been unraveled by the gradual and inevitable progress of science and social change. Little was unknown, the greatest quandaries being the irresoluable ones involving religion, philosophy, and the other branches of the human spirit.

On September 30th, in the year 2010, came the beginning of a period that is now known as "The Time of Change." The Aurora Borealis, or the Northern Lights, which were previously restricted to extremely specific spots on the planet, became visible in all places and at all times during the day. Rather than being the benign shows of light that have been catalogued in the night skies in earlier times, these displays took on the more malicious air of rifts in the very sky, often heralding with their ethereal light vicious storms with heavy rains and sharp winds.

As the months wore on in "The Time of Change," the world lost the permenancy that it had for so long, starting with subtle shifts in the land that eventually rose in intensity to the point where even the most recent maps soon no longer charted the land. Mountains rose in the plains, oceans overtook and receeded from their previously held coastlines, and even the mightiest rivers changed their courses with the topographical upheaval.

We, in our great hubris, were unflappable. There was always a new theory to explain these changes. Global Warming caused the oceans to rise and the rivers to change. Global Tectonic Instability is what made mountains rise from nowhere. Magnetic Depolarization caused by erratic solar activity is what made the Aurora Borealis never go away. The problems that caused our planet to cry out in pain and rend itself asunder were simple news headlines that could be explained away and rendered miniscule, unimportant.

However, no one was ready for what happened that next February, after five months of upheaval. Nothing could explain what happened. No one had an answer, from the greatest scientist to the wisest shaman to the lowest of the low, it was simply too shocking to imagine.

Suddenly, without precedent, the islands of Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Staten no longer existed. In place of the most metropolitan area in the world now stood a forest the likes of which none had ever seen before, with trees that defied the imagination and creatures that came from the nightmares of the insane.

I can't fault your story in any way, but RPGWWers tend to be picky about things such as spelling and grammar.

In summation, what you need to add to your post before people are likely to reply in the way you'd like them to:

1) Spellcheck and proofread what you put up and endeavor to make it clearer. I hate to be the English Teacher, but the way it is now it isn't very clear and it doesn't read very well. If you don't have something clean and crisp for your RP pitch, then potential players will consider your GMing to also lack the clean and crisp qualities that RPGWWers value so much.

2) Tell us what you want. It's hard to say "I'd like to do this!" when we don't quite know what you want us to do. What is the goal of this leg of the RP/Campaign? What do you want the players to accomplish? Where would they be headed?

3) Give us some more details! You mention very, very little for something as radical as a whole new world setting. What's the mood of the game? Is it bleak with the whole "You've already lost so make the best of it" feel that's so prevalent in games such as Vampire: the Masquerade? Is there hope? How normal is life, how easy is it for anyone to relate to the race or people that we'll end up being? Does anyone have superpowers or is everything mundane?

That's all the ranting I can really do right now. My Speed is running low and I still need to write a paper. I'm not being malicious or cruel- this is intented to be helpful criticism. It might pay for you to join someone else's game before you start GMing.
[---------------------------]
