Rising Stars (RP idea)

Unread postby Kelne » Tue Jan 11, 2005 3:34 am

Well, it's that time again. The time when I devise a plan for a board RP, in the hope that this will be the one that I actually finish. This, however, shall be something completely different.

In essence, I am planning an RP themed around the Jak and Daxter games. Most of you, I'm sure, are at least passingly familiar with them.

I'll be setting the story in the days before Haven City, and focusing it around the unearthing of ancient ruins left behind by the mysterious Precursors. Further setting information shall follow should I get sufficient interest to proceed.
KnightsofSquare: DarkLordKelne is a tomboy bunnygirl, jealous of the business successes of her 37 older brothers, she is pursuing her own business degree in hopes of someday initiating a hostile takeover against her brothers' corporations.

Dude...Jak and Daxter BOARD RP? Sweet.

I'd like to reserve a spot, even just to apply! Sounds like good stuff, Kelne.
---------------

Any history of the Precursors begins as it ends - with rumour, conjecture, and myth. Though their ruins lie scattered across the face of our world, we know next to nothing about who they were, and there are almost as many theories about why they vanished as there are people in the world.

This we do know. The Precursors lived many eons ago, and built great works using the eco that permeates the world. And then they vanished. Though many people have spent their lives studying the ruins they left behind, myself included, we have few answers.

Still, with each new ruin explored comes the thrill of fresh discovery. The feeling that this time, perhaps, that vital missing piece of the puzzle will reveal itself. One can dream, at least.
- Oscar Hart

Society

While the lives and ultimate fate of the Precursors remain a mystery, it doesn't have that much bearing on peoples' day to day lives. They are happy to take advantage of any beneficial Precursor technology in their area, and by and large, life is peaceful.

Most people live in small villages, though there are a few larger towns to be found. Certainly there are no recognised nations to which people belong, and war is virtually unheard of.

Technology is at the level of internal combustion and electricity. Riding beasts are also prevalent. Adapted Precursor technology includes hover vehicles and linked warp portals, though both are still a bit temperamental.

Eco

The substance known as eco lies at the core of all precursor technology. It can also be utilised directly by people who come into contact with it. Dark and green eco are by far the most commonly found, and all types can be found in small concentrations, or in artificial wells across the landscape.

Eco comes in several different colours. Green eco is associated with life energy, and has a reganerative effect in sufficient quantities. It can be distilled and packaged into healing items.

Blue eco lends one speed. It can also repower inactive precursor technology for a time (if loss of power is the only thing wrong with it, that is).

Red eco enhances a person's physical strength, while yellow eco can be channeled into a fiery blast of energy. It is notable that most yellow eco wells found are capped, for reasons of safety.

Finally, there is dark eco. The type most easily tapped for power, and the most volatile. In addition to its destructive potential, dark eco has a warping effect on those exposed to it over long periods of time. Lurkers are believed to have been created through exposing ordinary creatures to dark eco. It can pool in certain areas, which most sensible creatures will avoid.

It is thought that there is a sixth form of eco - so-called "light" eco. Equal in power to dark eco, but without the destructive side-effects. If it does exist, it is very rare indeed.

Sages

Sages are those who study the different types of eco. Over time, they come to absorb a great deal of energy from it, taking on certain characteristics and abilities along the way. Of course, becoming a sage of dark eco is a risky proposition, and such individuals tend to be viewed with suspicion, if they are tolerated within society at all.

Lurkers

Generally less civilised than most people, Lurkers are hulking oragey creatures with a propensity for walking on their knuckles. They live in fortified villages on the fringes of civilisation, and while they aren't too good at building sophisticated technology themselves, they're quite good at using it.

As the product of dark eco experimentations by a crazed sage, Lurkers have a bit of a bad reputation. While they're generally not a problem, there's always that sneaking suspicion that they're just not organised behind a charismatic leader at the moment.

Ruins and Precursor Tecnology

Given how long ago it was abandoned, it's surprising just how much Precursor tech still works. They certainly built to last. In some cases, the only reason sites can be called ruins is because they're uninhabited. Still, where time and nature have left certain sites intact, human ingenuity has not. Since Precursor technology is clearly superior, inventors and mechanics have gotten into the habit of taking it apart to see how it works. While this has done wonders for the march of technology, often people either can't or won't put the devices back together when they're done.

Of course, in order to get to the technology, you have to make your way past various obstacles, even traps. These seem to have found their way into most ruins for some reason. Almost like some people didn't want others messing with Precursor technology. Imagine that. Still, there are always people willing to take a crack at things, and most ruins that are discovered give up their secrets eventually.

The Oracles

Scattered through both ruins and the wilds, these stone heads are a mystery to all. Presumably, they have something to do with the Precursors. It is thought that they speak to certain people, but there are no substantiated reports of such an event.

The Hillton Village area

A small rural community of around 60 people, Hillton isn't the least bit famous for anything. Those who don't like the laid back lifestyle move to the town of Tasken Heights, some thirty miles to the west, but most people seem happy.

Although there is a Lurker village a couple of valleys over, the residents are on good terms with them. Well, peaceful anyway. A live-and-let-live attitude, at heart.

Until the arrival of an archaeologist by the name of Oscar Hart, it wasn't thought that there were any Precursor ruins in the area. Now, the town is experiencing a small influx of treasure hunters.
KnightsofSquare: DarkLordKelne is a tomboy bunnygirl, jealous of the business successes of her 37 older brothers, she is pursuing her own business degree in hopes of someday initiating a hostile takeover against her brothers' corporations.
Edited by: [url=http://p068.ezboard.com/brpgww60462.showUserPublicProfile?gid=kelne>Kelne</A] Image at: 1/16/05 1:58
