Sign-ups for something RPG Related... (Non-Gaeran)

Unread postby Reako Somner » Sat Nov 13, 2004 1:24 am

While thinking of what kind of backstory to make up for the RPG I am working on, regarding the war between two kingdoms, Loracia and Walnar, I had an idea. It might be interesting, it might be stupid, but an idea, nonetheless. Whether or not it works out depends upon the response to this topic. SO, here goes...

I need at least 4 or 5 people to make new characters for two groups (8 to 10 people in total) What for?

I'm thinking of playing out my RPG's war backstory... in an RP fashion. As in, two groups of people will be taking a part in how that war ended. I need people to sign up for a Wed. session, as part of the Eldrich Knighthood,(Loracia) or Sunday sessions, as part of the Frost Arrow Brigade. (Walnar)

Things to know: Loracia is known for it's skilled swordsmen, while Walnar prides itself on it's archers. This doesn't exactly mean archers of Loracia or knights of Walnar suck, it just isn't what they are known for.

Neither group will know where the other group is going, what they are doing, and all that. Though, in the end, both groups shall meet, and what the RPers decide to do after the events that have taken place previously, is up to them.

Loracia is a kingdom with many lakes and rivers, the castle itself on an island in the largest lake. It's culture is really into fishing or small boats. Your character might have skills in either.

Walnar has dense forests, and it's capital is in mostly mountainous terrain. Your character might've had a job involving such surroundings before joining the Frost Arrow Brigade.

How the War Began:
One night, the King of Walnar came under attack of black garbed assassins donning the emblem of Loracia. He managed to escape death, and the castle guards drove the assassins off, but he was infuriated by the attack, and prepared to mobilize his armies as he sent messengers to the Kingdom of Loracia demanding to know the meaning of this. None returned, and the King of Walmar was sure his Kingdom would soon be under attack.

A similar incident happened in the Kingdom of Loracia, assassins bearing the national symbol of Walnar... the King of Loracia heard from scouts not long after this attack that Walnar was mobilizing for war. Fearing the sudden hostilities of the neighboring country, the king quickly gathered together an army to defend his country.

In the end, the war was instigated by a shadowy group of miscreants, who wished it to happen for some unknown means. However, neither country is aware of this organization or what it plans to do....

What your characters would know:
If you are part of the Eldrich Knighthood, for all you know, the King of Walnar must've gotten greedy and wishes to take Loracia's lands, an unknown dispute happened, who knows. But man, those Walnarians sure seem like the badguys don't they?

As for those Walnarians, you might think it dishonorable or cowardly that the Loracians would send assassins to attack your King, rather than declare a war by a more formal means. And to think, they are blaming YOU for this war! Are they not able to take responsibility for the actions of thier rulers?!

System to Be Used:
Most likely chat, Wednesday Afternoons-Nights and Sunday Nights. I am most likely using Windows, for more details on that, IM me. Please, if you sign up, make sure you can be around for these appointed times. If you do not sign up, but instead call this whole thing kind of stupid and a bunch of hot air, that's OK, it was a good waste of time for tonight and I needed something to do.

Regardless.... here it is. If you have any other questions, just post them and talk to me, I'll try to answer. Phew, typing this took awhile.

Magic in this world is fairly light, usually calling upon various celestial entities or netherworlders. Only well known sages and magic practitionors have anything identifiably major. (For example, a normal mage would never learn beyond the basics, FF magic for example, Fire, Ice, Lightning, Heal, etc)

Walnar has begun to advance on thier crossbow designs, and chances are a Walnar archer might be trained with one later, though they are currently crude, and very difficult to reload properly. Most other technology is, I'd say, fairly medieval, nothing all too advanced just yet.

And yes, you do whatever you want to in the creation of your character, within logical reason. Like, he's not the best swordmaster, archer, or wizard in the land etc, stuff like that. Other than that, go nuts.

Magics? The nature and level of such, if they exist?

Technological advancements?

Regardless, I will sign up for the Wednesday sessions of the Eldritch Knights. I will begin work on character creation immediately.

Also. The Window sytem, for those who are interested and not in the know.

I presume that character creation will be fairly freeform, based on the character's story and background and roleplaying and whathaveyou. Verify, Reako? <p><span style="font-size:xx-small;">"It's in the air, in the headlines in the newspapers, in the blurry images on television. This probably has flaws, since this is my first foray into Windows. Anyway, here we go, someone from Walnar!

Pvt. Anastasia "Annie" Tildemore
24-year-old Caucasian Female
5'3'' tall
117 lbs.
Shorter than average, but not by much, with bright and idealistic green eyes set into a youthful face. Long, soft brown hair, usually tied back or kept in a bun, and her head sits on a neck that is slightly too short and slightly too thick to qualify as graceful or ladylike. Flat of bust, not very shapely, looks more prepubescent in body type than adult, though she easily looks her age.

Anastasia Tildemore, known as "The Angel of Battle," would often cut swaths of destruction and chaos in her wake, bringing great glory to king and country...
Or so she would daydream, as a child.
A girl of common birth in the country of Walnar, she was born and raised to a warm, loving, hard-working, and numerous family that had a modest but prosperous farm in one of the more arable areas in Walnar. Her family never wanted, and most knew their place in the world. But not Annie.
Frequently, instead of doing her chores, she would spirit herself off in the early morning and watch the local garrison at drills. She would also try to mimic them, using a stick instead of a sword, and throwing rocks in the stead of firing bows (not a very good simile, but you take what you can get). Many of her male peers made fun of her, though they tended not to do it when she was around, as she became quite good at lobbing rocks in the direction of jeers. Later in the day, she would daydream about marching off to battle, earning honors and glories, and being of great service to her king.
In the home, however, she was made to learn to do the various chores of the farm, and learned to cook, clean, plant, sew, treat minor injuries, milk, scavenge, reap, tie, barter, and any other number of necessary skills that one needs to run or help run a farm. Her father also made sure to teach each of his children to read and write, and to do arithmetic, thus giving his children a leg up in the world.
Eventually, she began to pester her father about letting her hunt, and about how her elder siblings got to do it, and eventually he gave in and made her her first bow.
It was a crude affair, made of stove-bent wood, as simple and cheap as it can be made while still qualifying as a bow.
And she learned to hunt. She learned to sneak around and surprise animals, she learned to set traps, and she learned to predict what the animal would do so she could act accordingly.
And she wasn't that bad of an archer, either.
By the time she was sixteen, she was the best hunter in her family. By seventeen, she was the best hunter in her village... though this isn't saying much. She learned proper care for her bow, and also how to fletch her own arrows as to better work her craft. Of course, always using the same crude affair her father had made for her, as the better bows were beyond her ken as to how to make them and they were much too expensive for her to afford, since she had an income of zero.
Some of her contemporaries began to join the army- as it was an honorable profession, with pay, and it was more reliable than farming in many ways. Harking back to her days as a very young girl, she remembered mimicking the soldiers with warm fuzziness, and then promptly forgot the whole thing so she could finish baling the hay.
Then came the final blow that drove her from home:
There was no one left to marry. Everyone was either married or off somewhere else.
Literally. Even if it were an option, all of her siblings were either too young or already out working their own land.
There weren't any dirty old men for her to marry, either.
No one.
Nada.
Zilch.
Zero.
Thus, she could not satisfy one of the greatest imperatives of a peasant girl's life: She could not start a family with some peasant boy and raise her own peasant children and teach them to do peasant things and yada yada yada.
She could either stay home and live on her father's farm until some marriage prospect came up, or she could go out and try to do something different. So, mainly as a way of killing time, and perhaps subconsciously living her dream, she joined the Waltar army at age 20.
Through her training, she learned how much she didn't know about archery, though she did surprise some of her comerades in field exercises with her stealthiness and her expertise at herding her targets into places where they would be vulnerable to paint arrows shot from the distance. And, of course, her sword skill had so many flaws in it that it was barely worth the effort to improve it.
After a couple uneventful years of garrison duty, she eventually found herself with the option of joining the Frost Arrow Brigade. So, without much thought or reasoning, and a great big mental Why not?, she went ahead with the induction, special training and all.
She, just weeks ago, finished said special training- and she's fresh to the Frost Arrows.

Annie is extremely romantic in her thoughts, and isn't very down-to-earth or realistic when it comes to a great many things about life. She believes in true love and heroism and right and wrong and justice and glory and happiness and idealism and... well, a whole bunch of other stuff. She's a fragile optimist, in that she will without urging think the best about a situation, but her optimism would wilt if confronted with a lot of well-directed and well-informed pessimism. She fantasizes a lot in her spare time, and she enjoys to spend time exercising, reading, or writing in her diary. She writes letters home every now and then, too, and she sends the majority of her pay to her father (who is getting on in years). She is, in many ways, very girly. She likes new clothes, she likes being clean, she likes other people being clean, she likes to look nice, she likes jewelry, et cetera. She just has a few passions in her life that don't really coincide with the general "feminine" archetype. That, and she has a whole chain of lucky charms.

Anastasia:
Has below average strength (D20)
Is fluidly and easily agile (D8)
Has a good understanding of the world (D12)
Has keen senses (D8)
Is very hardy (d10)

Anastasia is:
An expert archer(d8)
A journeyman medic (d12)
A knowledgeable farmer (d12)
A weak swordsman (D20)
An expert hunter/trapper (d8)
Very good at sneaking around (d10)
Tactically knowledgeable (d12)
A clumsy seamstress (d20)
A skilled fletcher (d10)
Incredibly but aimlessly creative (d8)

Anastasia Tildemore carries on the march...
Some writing tools and ink
Some paper
Her diary
Her shiny, brand-new oiled and well-crafted Composite Longbow.
A quiver full of arrows.
An Archer's glove to protect her fingers.
Some cold-weather gear.
A kit bag with a knife, some bandage, a few feathers, flint, steel, a whetstone, and some emergency rations.
Her lucky charms. All of them.

She carries with her when off-duty in a town...
Her kit bag
Her lucky charms. All of them.
Some ink and writing tools.
Her diary.

She also owns...
Her first bow
A few books
Some nice clothes. <p>[---------------------------]

Name: Orexis Tamin
Height: Slightly higher than average
Weight: skinny, but not toothpickish
Age: In his prime

Orexis was born into a very strange family, with a long, rich history and a dark secret. He was raised in a small hamlet called Kusan, and it was here that he learned most of what he knows.

Kusan was a very warm, enriching environment, and since he was able to walk he has been training in barehanded fighting arts, whence he has learned equally well to disarm, incapacitate, or kill human beings. It is one of the arts exclusive to Kusan, and they are not very easily pursuaded to teach it to outsiders--not that anyone else could learn it nearly as well as those of Kusan have mastered it over the ages. As a result, Kusan is possibly the most safe, secure town in all of Loracia, though many wars have come and gone and Kusan has never put up a struggle, preferring surrendering uninvolvement to unneeded violence and bloodshed. Politics only have so much importance when your entire village guards a secret which is as old as human history.

Over time, Orexis began to grow weary, as protagonists are wont to do, of simply living out his days doing the same thing in the same town. Amidst much cautioning from his elders, he left the town to create his own life in the great, big world out there. And he found the capital city of Loracia much to his liking.

He was mistaken for a defenseless neophyte shortly after making his home in the capital, and the guards who cleaned up the mess recommended him to the Eldritch Knights, where magic and swordsmanship were both practiced to peak form. Or so the recruiters said, anyway. He joined--what better way to see more of the world, and put his skills to good use?

He discovered very quickly, however, that he was utterly unable to learn any of the magic they tried to teach him, despite his clear magical alignment detectable simply by looking at his eyes which weren't brown, as most might say upon a first glance, but rather a dark crimson. Having never had this called to attention before--everyone in his family had his same eye color--Orexis found himself purchasing a hat which shadowed his eyes in short order.

He was not quite so lost at the sword arts, though. He wields a sword nearly as good as the next soldier, but he will never be as comfortable with a blade as he is with his open fists. To this end, he often wrought mischief in his unit while at base, so he could further train his endurance and pain tolerance while the other soldiers practiced in the methods of murdering their foes. He began to hear "Drop and give me twenty!" in his sleep.

Eventually, his unit became active, and was assigned an actual combat mission. It was a brutal fight where they were dispatched, and only Orexis and four comrades survived. Save Orexis, these men were completely uninjured, though one was brought into hospitalization, later to be discharged, due to some sort of madness. The other two men also seemed to have changed during the mission, somehow, much in the way a child changes, grows more serious, after having lived away from his parents' support.

Orexis himself takes his life very seriously, and does not put up with petty bickering and small concerns; he considers such things not worth his time. He's grown to be quite a smartass since his move to the capital, which causes some to become frustrated, and some to become respectful. He always wears his Knights' sword at his hip, clearly visible, when travelling, as is common for Knights to do in the city, though he almost never uses it except to add more visible weight to the occasional threat. He is loyal to the bitter end, and refuses to see one of his comrades fall in battle if he has anything to say about it.

Orexis has the strange, supernatural ability to Fuse with an aspect of a God's body as he chooses, becoming closer to an elemental archetype to reap its powers at the cost of some of his sanity. Currently, he can Fuse with spirits of Darkness and Lightning elements, though it is whispered in Kusan that he may be able to unseal more powers as parts of his heart are discovered and unlocked. He can maintain in a Fused form for no longer than six rounds in any combat situation, lest he go berserk and seek to slay all in his presence.

In his Dark form, called Nox by his clan, he appears as a humanoid with skin that looks as though obsidian has oozed out from his veins, covering most of him. He develops claws, loses his eyes (though somehow maintains sight), and acquires use of a set of nasty teeth (like the aliens in the Alien movies). Additionally, he grows a set of winglike limbs out of his back, which are too small to be of any use in combat. He is able to manifest some magical power in this shape, in two forms: First, he can enhance his allies' magical prowess (d10), and second, he can project a ray of negative energy at a foe, or line of foes (d12).

In his Lightning form, called Miserati, he grows taller and thinner, and his skin changes to a sort of blue, with light emanating where shadows once were cast on his body--this is rather visually disturbing to anyone who takes enough time to contemplate it. His pupils disappear from his eyes, which glow with the same bluish light, and his ears grow to absurd lengths (think Deedlit). His legs unite into a single pillar which crackles with energy where it touches the ground, and he leaves a trail of ground burnt by this energy as he moves across terrain. He reacts faster (by one die) to combat situations in this form, can see hidden opponents, and has the ability to call lightning down from the heavens onto his foes(d12), presuming an open sky from which to draw.

--Stuff!--
He is exceedingly tough (d8)
He is a melee combat master (d6 except against opponents wearing full plate, or lots of armor on horseback)
He is extremely resilient to torture (d8)
He is grating, but respectable (d12)
He has good clarity of thought (d10)
He is quite sane and unnervingly cool-headed(d8)
He can't work magic worth a damn (d30)
He has seen a couple people fish once or twice (d20)
He knows not the ways of crafting (d30)
He has very good motor skills, for games of darts and whathaveyou (d10)
He is not particularly aware of his surroundings most times (d12)
He is not sneaky (d20)
He generally ignores combat tactics (d20)
And some Other Stuff (dX) <p><span style="font-size:xx-small;">"It's in the air, in the headlines in the newspapers, in the blurry images on television. Most likely not, which is unfortunate as it looks like hardly anyone visits the OOC forums anymore. Ah well, maybe I should readvertise.

Wednesday seems somewhat kosher! As long as we start at noon, your time, and end at...four, your time. I have to get ready to go do stuff then. Times may, possibly, change, depending on what's convenient for everyone else.

Name: Hunter Shane
Height: 5' 8"
Weight: medium athletic build
Age: 25

Hunter was born into an upper-class family in the capitol of Loracia. However, he had a problem. He was the third of five children, and following tradition, the eldest son of a family received all inheritance, as well as any positions that the head of the household was keeper of. This meant that he, as a middle child, had to make a name for himself, unaided by his class.

He received a standard upper-class classical education, and in an attempt to start earning his own fortune, joined the army, and worked up to his place as a knight. He made sure nothing was handed to him on a platter - after all, if he was going to have to earn his own place in life, he wanted others to be able to see that it was, in fact, by his own merits, not that of his family.

The end result is a seasoned soldier. He didn't have any issues as a child, and apart from the standard losing-a-couple-friends-in-battle that accompanies being a soldier, he hasn't had a particularly tragic past. He feels he has nothing to be ashamed of, and will openly talk about himself, if so asked. He is generally chivalrous and well mannered, but isn't above rudeness to people he doesn't like.

Hunter is skilled with the sword, shield, and pole-arm. He also has slight skill with wind and healing magics. He can be sneaky when necessary, but usually isn't, due to wearing armour most of the time. He is also semi-skilled at negotiating with others, and has a wonderful singing voice.

When traveling and/or expecting battle, he wears a breastplate, armoured greaves and gauntlets, lighter chain-mail, and a light helmet. He also carries a poleax, strapped to his back when traveling about, a short sword, hanging from his hip in case his foes get too close for the pole-arm, and a small shield/buckler, almost always strapped to his left arm. Well, normal traveling supplies, as well.

Numbers and skills to come later! <p>
