A Newbie RP ::Audible Gasp::

Unread postby nuklearbobcat » Mon Apr 12, 2004 7:29 pm

Hey i'm new here, and this will be my first attempted RP. I started it up in the "others" section under the title "A sorrowful music". Later i read that i should present the RP idea here, so here i am. This is a repost of the background of the story.

I am open to anyone entering and helping me out, as i am new and must suck at this. However, I really do want to make a good RP about this by some strange miracle. Anyone who is willing to try something new go ahead and help me out by playing.

One small requirement, please: the characters that enter must have names that are not proper ones. For instance, my character is called Artist, because that is what she is. Other ones can come along, such as Warrior, Hero, Child, Sage, King, Mother, Rogue, etc.

BACKGROUND
In the beginning, the world was beautiful and perfect. Mankind lived in harmony with nature, and the world was a beautiful place to live. The legends say that the world was once whole and complete, without any scar or rupture. Some even say that it was a complete globe.

However, as in all states of perfection, this one would not hold for very long. Mankind began to develop technology, and some wanted to move their race onward into greater and greater things. This group was known as the Radicals.

Of course, there were those who were deeply rooted in the traditions of man. They wished to keep things as they always were, and violently opposed the Radicals. This group was called the Traditionals.

The war between the two groups became so great, and so ingrained in the respective members of the movements through generations that two great Wills began to unite against each other.

Now, as all young children are taught today, the Will of men is a Magickal thing. It can create and destroy, heal and injure, change, and protect.

The two great Wills formed into two great magicks called the Yin, formed by the Traditionals and the Yang, formed by the radicals. Over millenia, these Magicks formed into gods, powerful sentient beings with their own freewil. The legend does not say why this happened.

The godess born of Yin was called Kun. She worked her power to keep mankind focused on the past, and impeded their movement. She ruled the element of earth.

The god born of Yang was called Quian. His power was over heaven. He embodied the spirit of the Radicals, moving them to take their goals further and further, at any cost.

The two groups rallied to their gods and served under them. However, the two gods ended up uniting their powers to subdue mankind.

The gods soon gave birth to children. The first two were Zhen and Xun.

Zhen, the god of Thunder, was wild and chaotic. He kept mankind in a warlike spirit. Many of those from the Radicals and Traditionals soon rallied to him, forming an army that brought bloodshed upon all. He established an empire, with the goal of subduing all of the world under his might.

Xun, the goddess of Wind, worked much like her mother did. She worked to keep mankind steeped into tradition, and formed a settlement with a few followers that built large gothic-style towers that reached high into the sky.

Because of the chaos brought about by Zhen, a great war ensued that tore the entire world asunder, and many would have died, had it not been for the gods, who carried away some of the selected mortals and animals, and sealed their souls for a time.

Quian and Kun reformed the world with a piece leftover from the war. It was in the shape of a bowl, coming about halfway to the equator. They tended the ground inside the bowl, and created it all anew, and left the barren, war scarred outside alone.

As there was no more sun, they realized that something must be done for that, or else men would not survive. Therefore, they took a chunk of the core and formed it into a two-sided structure. On one side they fashioned a glowing city that would give off light to all of those who dwelt in the bowl. They called it Heaven. Then on the underside was a dark mountain which allowed little light from the other side. This was called hell. This is where the gods took up their dwelling in order to keep their eye on mankind. When Heaven faced the Bowl, it was called Day, and when Hell faced the Bowl, it was called night.

Zhen and Xun reformed their settlements promptly. Xun rebuilt her towers, yet this time she built them in the center of the Bowl, with the towers almost reaching Heaven and Hell.

They then took the mortals that they sealed and put them upon the earth again, reviving them from their slumber. The world had begun anew, and the old rivalry between the Traditionals and the Radicals started anew, though mankind was not as violent as they had been before, save for the followers of Zhen, the thunder god.

Soon after, Quian and Kun gave birth to two more children, Li and Kan.

Li was the goddess of Fire. Her ideal was intellectualism. She kept a portion of mankind trapped in a society of dry intellectuals and scientists, with little goals other than learning. She hoped to some day devise a plan to destroy the other gods. She formed a city of learning on the side of an active volcano, on the side which the lava did not flow. The city had Romanesque architecture, with marble-white buildings and streets.

Kan was the god of the Sea. He had a very extravagant personality, and was very emotional. He gathered a portion of mankind to himself and formed a sort of cult, with great goals, and little action. He, like Zhen, formed something of an army, though not much could be said of their discipline. Their base was nothing more than a few large rudimentary tents along the seashore.

Finally, the god of Heaven and the Goddess of Earth gave birth to two last children: Dui and Gen.

Gen was the god of Mountain. He was different from the other gods. He was very hard hearted, and did not wish to do anything like the other gods did. However, his Magick did gather disciples to him, and he formed a monastery in a large mountain, where the residents lived in solitude and silence.

Dui was the goddess of Lake. She, for some reason was born blind, though her other godlike senses more than made up for that. She, alone was born as a child, and remained so for thousands of years. She had one final work to do to complete the subduing of the world which her parents began. Now of all things in the world, only one thing could change the preexisting order, and that was the Child. Her goal was to eliminate childhood, and all of it's power. She took her residence in a monastery near a lake in a dark forest. Children from all of the other gods' establishments were sent there in order to be turned into adults promptly.

It is in such a setting in which our story begins.

Oookay, I'll use this post to describe my character rather than bitch about no people in a half an hour. Heh.

She has long white hair, though she is youthful in appearance. In contrast, her skin is a bronze color. She is clothed in a beautiful white robe. On her back, she carries a bunch of art supplies on her back, everything from oil for paint, to brushes, and even paper and other writing utensils for her literary endeavors.

You know, for a "newb" who "must suck", you've got yerself a derned cool setting right there, and you've presented it very well.

Looks like the RP ideas are flowing at a nice pace here. I'll be joining this time around since I was able to take part in the creation of this one. I'm a bit new to the whole RP concept but I've been writing for a while now and the ideas were a combination of two worlds.

I'm hoping my posts are coherent and entertaining for those of you who keep up with our story.

I'll also be taking part in the story but I may not come into play with the main events until I am a little more familiar with the way things go.

-Background-

During the celebration of the Millenia since the Creation of the Gods in the town of Xun, a few kilometers to the south east in a small temple dedicated to Gen, a women was giving birth to child which would carry the knowledge the traditional culture. Raised in a monastery under the guidance of the G'nil Monks (which lived in the monastery of the mountain god, Gen), the Sage was able to aquire the great ability to control all eight elements which were at his disposal. Soon he came to the age where he would part from the monastery and begin his search for true balance to all the elements, a task which he was predestined to from before he was born.

The Great Nevareh

Participant

Unread postby The Great Nevareh » Tue Apr 13, 2004 11:26 pm

What's the basis of this? Is it based in Philsys? Is that a stupid question?

If necessary, I'll codify the character I'm about to post.

(Edit- These are possible names I came up with that reflect either the character's opinion of herself OR her talents.
Goddess(definitely NOT her talents), Trickster (talents), Jester (talents), Ringmaster(personal opinion), Demagogue(personal opinion), Dancer(talents), Acrobat(talents). I'm also considering the name "Freedom," but that doesn't fit very well, I don't think. Opinions?)
Female
Human
26 years old
A child born to a middle-class family, Nevareh always wanted to break free of the traditional constraints that were in existance around the middle class. So, she decided to wander off and become a Bard, thusly throwing away all forms of financial security of complacent happiness. She is agile, witty, and good at reading people. Her talents include joke-and-storytelling, dancing, singing, playing stringed instruments, knife-throwing, juggling, and (most notably) acting. At one point she decided that she would pose as a noble from time to time for financial reasons, or for just the thrill of tricking people. To Nevareh, life is a game. And she considers herself a rather apt player.
I am currently inhabiting a world that is made up entirely of numbers. These numbers represent characteristics of creatures and beings that I pretend to be along with a bunch of other people. I work on them until I forget what the sky looks like, or what the feeling of the sun on my skin is...

The basis of this RP is a world and a story that me and my friend created entirely on our own from scratch. By the way, no, that is not a stupid question.

Everything sounds good for yer charrie. Just remember that the characters in this RP are not to have proper names, therefore, Nevareh will not do, at least for this RP. Now what would work is to call her something that describes her, like Bard, or maybe something cool like Rogue, any improper noun that describes a person, and applies to her, capitalize it and BAM you got your charrie.

For instance, so far we have Artist, Sage, and Wanderer.

By the way, feel free to have the character start anywhere in the world, based on the descriptions i offered in the background. Don't worry about starting near me or any of the other characters. If you want, you can have your character start out in any of the other establisments that the other gods made. Of course, you are free to join any of us by having your character enter nearby. I want to keep this as open as possible, while still providing a structured world for everyone, which i will make sure to do in some of my posts in the RP for any who enter away from any of the previous characters. if it means i'll have to play a few different charries, then so be it.

Go ahead and post whenever and wherever you want to, Nevareh whenever you come up with a substitute name for the character.

Let's see, of the names that you mentioned, Trickster, Jester, Ringmaster, Dancer, and Acrobat would all work. Freedom wouldn't work because it doesn't necesarilly describe a person, and Demagogue seems a bit dry for a name. Goddess will not work because, well, there are real goddesses in this world. However, any of the names i mentioned above should work well.

Defender
Male
Human
19 years old
6'2"
278 lbs
Brown hair that comes to his lower back
Violet eyes
Born to a follower of Zhen and Kan he was raised as a some one to fight in the armies of his parents. They would argue constantly some times to the point of violence about which he would serve in. This did not bother Defender for he liked to train and when they fought he usually got a session of training that would make his arms feel like they where to fall off and his legs would barely support him. After many years when he was older his parents got into a serious fight not stopping when they usually did killing each other in the end. Although sad that this had happened it did not bother defender much as he had never felt love from his parents and had gotten it mostly from his grandfather who when ever possible would take him to his house and try and show him ways to use his strength and skill so not to help in causing another war. He taught him how Zhen and Kan had caused the destruction of the world and how he must be one of the people who would fight against it. Defender embraced this and when his parents killed each other he left moving about the new world trying to do as his grandfather taught him using the skills that his parents forced upon him.

Helper

Unread postby sculptor85 » Fri Apr 16, 2004 3:29 pm

Due to the newbieness of the creators (which i am one =P) we are going to be placing a helper character to those who may need directions in the towns.

For the most part we are hoping the characters in the world of 'A Sorrowful Music' describe the setting and town build themselves and we'll use that as a guide line for the rest of the characters. Otherwise we'll be placing a 'Helper' who can travel from town to town describing the setting and leading you to the shops where you can buy 'traditional' items and the shops where you can buy 'radical' items.

We await any response to this idea and we'll impliment the system if you players think it would be good.

I'm not sure this is such a good idea, as the helper tends t odetract from the setting. Heck, the helper found in every item store was the ONLY thing that bugs me about Gradia 2, an RPG I otherwise love to pieces.

If you're prepared to use this character in every town, etc., it wouldn't be that much more work just to come up with a new minor NPC when needed - which has the added advantage of developing the place even further with a new, permanent personality.

Actually the idea that sculptor has in mind is a little different. Rather than an actual character, his idea is to merely dictate the setting to one of the other players whenever neither of our characters are present. This is to make things easier, and to give you guys a better idea of what's going on, rather than forcing yall to junk it through. He should have said "Narrator" rather than character.

awesome you just saved me a world of extra work. So now i just hope you guys do as you please with setting and the rest of us will simply follow. Although nuklear has a point and yes we CAN impliment that type of char or just make it free to anyone to make the setting as they go

Due to the size of the world in with 'A Sorrowful Music' takes place we are currently still open to any characters who may enter. As the writers and creators of this world we are eager to see the brilliant minds of those of you who may want to enter.

There is also going to be additional characters entering the story in order to explain some of the plot better and help everyone get well oriented as to where the direction of the story is headed. BUT, no one is forced to follow this plot and may inquire into other realms.

If you are interested simply post your char here and take on any role which we have thus far mentioned, some of the name include Smith and Child who were mentioned in recent posts by some of the current members.

Also Nuklear and myself are going to be narrating around the characters but we would like to have the characters describe the surroundings around them for themselves making the world open ended and complete up the participant imagination. We will soon be placing more options for the players in game. Hopefully this will help the participant express what they want in the world they have around them in this RP.

We are still awaiting a response from Crimson and 'we' are trying to encourage him to repost soon, of course we know RPing is not a job for most and real life intervenes at times. Patience is something we (the creators and writers) are currently exercising and building so please be patient with us if we are to post anything out of the regular context.

Thank you for your time

Since he hunts he has experience with a sword and a bow. During that week, he stumbled across an egg, which happened to hatch into a dragon. He loved the dragon and the spent most of their time with each other. Later on when Eragon turned the age of 14 he was hunting in the forest for their dinner. When Eragon returned, he found his farm destroyed and on fire. His uncle and cousin were both dead. I like the idea and its good to have a 'Dragon Rider' =D you can pick from either one but Hero would fall in great with the original plot.

-To anyone who is joining-

We are glad that you like our RP and hope to expand even more on the idea. Please keep in mind this is a freestyle RP and we love it when someone comes up with something totally original and adds to our story (gives the writer more of a challenge and chance to expand what's already there).

Thank you for your time

Nate - two things.

One, a minor niggling thing: Your character takes up two names in a world where they would seem to be in short supply, since they all have to mean something.

Two, a MAJOR niggling thing: You have completely ripped Eragon and Saphira from the bestselling book Eragon. This is terrible, terrible roleplaying practice, and I've got to say I'm pretty gobsmacked you didn't even think of changing the names, at least.

If I was GM you'd never have been accepted. I don't know how these guys want to field it, if at all, but I'm hoping you'll rectify this on your own. Thankyou.

Alright Nate. Yamato's right. As far as the name, stick with Hero alone and that will work out fine.

Now on the issue of the character being from a bestselling book, I don't quite know what to say about that. I have not read this book, as I am not an avid modern fantasy prose fan, therefore, I would have never known about any of that. I fully agree with Yamato in that it is a bad habit to pick up in RP'ing, however, since you appear to be not much more experienced at this than myself, and since your character is already in the story (albeit a bit abruptly placed), I am willing to let you continue with the RP. Just remember what Yamato said for future reference, and keep in mind that not all GM's are as nice or foolish as I am.

Also, Geoscuppi, gohead, all clear. Thunderbirds are go. Image

BY THE WAY...

OOOOOOKay peoples the first night of this RP has been very long. Yall need to wrap shtuff up and put yer charries ta sleep so we can git on with the next day, ya dig? Charries here are goin out in a couple of different directions, but they're not robots, goddamn it! Let them sleep!

Heh, actually we're only waiting for two characters to knock out...I'll give you a clue: it's not me, it's not Sculptor, and it's not Yamato. HINT HINT
