by Night Shadowflake
Name: Night Shadowflake

Eyes: bluish-black (like sapphires)

Fur: white with black stripes

Height: 6'7"

Description:

Not many know of Night's people because they are always too busy killing each other to venture from their mountains. Kendans do travel but very little and never far. Kendans have been in a civil war since before Night was born. Some say the war has always been waged. Night believes it's time to call quits after he realizes the enemy aren't some kind of demonic spawn. They are just citizens looking for change.

Night is a male humanoid white tiger with hands instead of paws. All claws are retractable. Has high agility and alertness. Great night vision and hearing. Lanky but muscled. Can understand most feline and human languages. Wears angora pants, shirt and cloak. Wields 2 Kenda Scout Knives, a long bow, and an oak staff.

A Kenda Scout Knife is given to every Kendan upon completion of fighting school. It is just a simple blade with a leather wrapped, wooden handle. It is extremely light weight, forged from a sturdy metal, and proportioned to the wielder.

A Kenda-made longbow is made of maple wood and is traditionally given by the wielder's parents because a Kendan scout must provide his own bow for archery training.

A Kendan's oak staff is carved by the wielder to keep track of his/her battle history. Whenever a Kendan participates in a battle they will carve a ring into their staff. Inside the ring is written something to remind the wielder of which battle the ring represents.

Techs and spells
[Benediction=1]Sharpen (8 MP) - Boosts the damage of a weapon by +4 for rank rounds.
[Benediction=2]Fortify (8 MP) - Boosts the AC of an armor by +4 for rank rounds.
[Benediction=3]Center (10 MP) - Boosts a target's PA by +4 for rank rounds.
[Soul=1]Invisible Fist(10 MP) - deals 2d6 damage to one target.
[Soul Magic = 1]Artist's Depth (12 MP) Artists put their soul into their work, and it shows. Soul mages can also put their souls into their work, and they don't have to get all angsty about it. A work produced by a soul mage under this effect comes out with quality equal to their Soul Magic roll for the spell as though they had used that value for an Artistry check. This is not absolute value: the soul mage's technique is not improved. But that certain je ne sais quois is captured in the feeling that observers receive from the piece.
[Soul Magic = 2]Vocal Alteration (10 MP) - The voice is a reflection of the soul, and the target of this spell has their voice suitably altered to the user's preference, within the target's species's normal range. This lasts d6+2 minutes, and does confer a MBLK roll to an unwilling target. If the user wants the target to have a specific person's voice, the user can make an int/wis/wis roll, modified as appropriate for the user's familiarity with the person whose voice he wants to imitate.
[Knives=4]Dextrous Striking (2 TP) - Adds DEX to AT a second time for one round.
[Advanced Parry=2]Defender's Stance (1 TP) - Adds weapon skill rank to all PA rolls made this round. Even if no parry roll is allowed, half of the users's weapon skill rank is added to his PA for the remainder of the round. This tech cannot be combined with any other offensive tech, and the user forfeits any bonus attacks (but may use them, instead, as bonus parries).

Night's beginnings:

In a time of ignorance and gilded security in an empire built on a frosty mountain range one soldier saw the end coming years in advance. As the people grew lazy or pre-occupied the local officials saw their chance to take freedom after freedom. Taxes were increased and welfare was overly distributed. Problems aroze that made hearts weep. Natural resources were overly mined and horded by a few local officials to use in political battles. Priorities had become twisted and corrupt. Many would save a spotted owl before the life of a child. As crime rose martial law became constant. Finally all resources, every scrap of food, and most of the dwellings were controlled and distributed by the local officials.

When the people of Kenda finally became aware of their plight desperation arose and a civil war erupted. After 100 years of nightmarish battles and mindless bloodshed Kenda was in ruins. Food stores had been destroyed long ago. Water had been poisoned and all game had run to safer lands. With every faction starving and loosing all hope of peace. Militia and Soldier alike deserted their commanders. I was one such deserter.

My name is Night Shadowflake. My father died long ago in a rain of arrows. My mother died in a fire set by the Kenda Reformation Forces during an attack on my home city, Reethe. That is when my two brothers and I became orphans. Orphans are trained to join the Kenda Defense Force. They are taught that the KRF is an evil, murderous group out for innocent blood. When I became of age I joined the Kenda Defense Force. I fully believed every member of the KRF I killed was an evil demon. Then I began taking a closer look at them and realized they weren't what I, at first thought.

I fought as long as I could find reason to, but now I was done. I know now that it was political from the start. I realized I wasn't fighting treacherous criminals. I was fighting hopeful citizens, family in some cases. Then one night I saw my chance. I was given sentry duty on a maneuver to go down the mountain and plow an opening to the enemies' backs. When everyone fell asleep I collected supplies for three days. I belted on my swords my bow, and my staff. I put my pack on my back, and snuck out of camp.

After 2 days of hiking I entered the first stand of trees. On day 4 I found a calm flowing stream despite the frigid temperatures. I camped the stream and was rewarded when a stag came up for a drink. I put away my hand insulators and nocked my bow. With fingers that were numb I pulled back my arrow and took aim. When I loosed it it whistled into the creature with a soft thud right behind the front leg. It fell to the bank in a puff of snow. I dragged it back to my camp and began to make a fire. After I stripped the hide and butchered the meat I skewered some onto a stick. When the first bits were done I ate it gratefully. That night i fell asleep with more hope then I had known for decades.

A New Night:

I woke up to a sudden noise in the wee hours of morning. It was a sound I've heard when I was in the mountains. It is a sound that scares entire towns. The sound of a large snow drift falling on your home.

I knew I had to fight the panic, but such a thing is difficult when you can hardly breathe. Somehow I managed to maintain control long enough to start pushing the snow away from my hands. Then I began the upper body of a 3-D snow angel. My angel became a domed cavity. That's when I began to free my feet and legs. After I was free of the pressure I began to push the snow into a sort of tunnel directed away from the tree I had slept under.

After what seemed like hours of slowly pushing, compacting the snow on all sides of me I came into a blinding light. I sat down to a meager breakfast of cold venison to replenish my strength. The sun was shining from directly across the snow and I could see a few painted clouds. As soon as I felt rested I crawled back through my tunnel. I began compacting the roof of my dome until I could stand in the middle and only had to hunch a little bit at the walls.

By the time this was finished the sun was high outside so I searched for the buried stag somewhere just outside my dome. It didn't take long to find it. I then went outside to find some wood for a fire so that I could thaw the frozen meat. I built the fire outside my new shelter. After lunch I explored the area until nightfall.

When I awoke the next morning I chose to let Nature guide me where it will. I traveled for a number of months; wandering through trees and into some mountains unfamiliar to me. When I came down the other side I found myself in a rather nice looking landscape. Eventually I came upon a rather large city state, the biggest I'd ever seen.

I walked through the streets for a while just letting people brush by me. These were a curious people. There were so many different shapes, sizes, colors. I was so overwhelmed by the crushing numbers of people all around me I was soon looking for any quiet corner. I found a rather dark building with muffled noise drifting from a partially open door. I could hear talking in some language I didn't fully understand. I could tell the overall meaning and my instincts told me the ones inside were speaking of a hunt of some kind. Intrigued from boredom I followed the voices.

As I pushed the door open it creaked slightly. As quiet as it was, it was still loud enough to draw the eyes of the handful of creatures within. As I glanced around the room I assumed this was a pub of sorts. It was a lightless place except for the feeble excuse for candles in holders on the four walls. There was also a couple of candles at the front counter. With all eyes on me I walked over to a corner the light didn't touch. Finding a chair I sat down with my back to the wall and observed those present.

Slowly the low rumble of conversation resumed. I noticed the barrels behind the counter but it didn't interest me. What drew my attention was hearing the word, "adventure again. It was coming from the bartender. He was telling a simple looking man with blonde hair of some "damned censer" in a castle prison. He also mentioned what presumably was, "goddess". As he talked he tapped a piece of parchment.

It was some time before the blonde man left the pub. That's when I approached the bar and looked at the parchment. It was in an odd handstyle so i caught the bartender's attention and asked, "adventure?", as I tapped the writing. At length I discerned that a hunt for an "Anvil of Striking" would soon be taking place. He informed me that it was to be a small hunt, so the king of Doma (I found that to be the name of this loud city) was looking for anyone with a will to go. After finding out a little more information I headed for the castle to volunteer.

Hey, there!

Welcome to the forum. Where'd you come from or how did you find out about us?

I don't think I can speak to the Philsys numbers but they look good to me.

I'm not too math savvy, you see.

In your description you have "humanoid white tiger". Does Night belong to a specific race or is that the result of some kind of malediction? Or is s/he an offworlder? You might expound upon that in you biography which you haven't finished yet but I was curious since as of yet it's hard to place where Night comes from, what Night is, or even if Night is a bloke or a lass.

Hopefully, someone can come along and give a look at your PS stats 'cause I sure can't.

Happy to have you around!

First off, welcome to RPGWW! Great to see you here, and great to see you tackling PS.

You've got a great start here, and I'm assuming Sage brought you over? (Saw the USMC note in your profile.) He's a good source for setting stuff, and failing that message Nekogami or me. As a side-note, please place more paragraph breaks in your post, particularly the history section. It makes it very hard to read a great hulking block of text, and aside from my ease of reading, paragraph breaks are a literary tool like any other, and where/when you use them gives you control over the pace at which the reader absorbs what you're saying, along with which things he/she will group together.

I'll leave you in Amanda's capable hands for the individual character stuff for the most part, but feel free to message me any which way you need to if you need anything else.

Aside from what Amanda's told you (all good stuff), I'd suggest taking a look at the Philsys Skill List. Weapons are not straight COU, as you have noted here.

As the page I linked indicates:

* ALL melee weapon skills are <Cou/Agi/Str>, unless DEX is being substituted for STR.
* Bows are now <COU/DEX/STR>, crossbows are <STR/DEX/DEX>, and guns are <COU/DEX/DEX>.
* ALL [k] skills are <Wis>, which does NOT need to be noted on the sheet.
* ALL magic skills are <Int/Wis/Mag>.

The difference in skill attributes between what's listed and what's on your sheet may be cause for you to re-evaluate some of your stats, but you're not obligated to do so by any means. I've just always found that looking at what I'm getting for the numbers makes it easier for me to make the cost-benefit judgments. For example, stealth is <Agi/Agi/Dex>, which means that your character may actually be a little better at it than you're giving him credit for by using a new set of attributes for the skill. Just the kind of thing that bears looking at.

Edit: Now that I'm looking at my post, I think I see the problem. If you're going to post things in brackets, sometimes you need to disable html in the post or else it starts autocorrecting things that it thinks are html.

Don't let Ashley fool you, she as OVER NINE THOUSAND ranks in Competence. I only have one or five. I put all my skill points in Advanced Angsting or Raks Sharqi.

Makes things interesting....

While we're bugging you for all this information and offering helpful suggestions, do you have an account on AIM? Or an equivalent (Trillian, GAIM, Pidgin, etc.) While we have a number of board RPs going, we also have a semi-active chat group that we pull together when we can.

Also, Nekogami touched on this above but I thought I would mention: There's a race in the main setting here that is very similar, physically, to what you've described. They're called Nekojin. The wiki is large enough to be intimidating to anyone new to the board, so it's understandable if you hadn't seen it yet. If you have, and just wanted a character from off world or something like Nekogami mentioned, that's fine as well.

Kai already pointed out the weapon base stats issue; that's easy enough to fix. Melee weapons are (Cou/Agi/Str) or (Cou/Agi/Dex) depending on whether they're light or not; ranged weapons are listed on the wiki, which you have presumably found!

Techs are mostly spellbook, which is fine. If nothing else, it means I can't say anything one way or the other regarding balance. They're solid.

Two-Sword Fighting is not its own skill, in that sense. The proper skill is [s]Two-Weapon Fighting, which covers any pair of two weapons you feel like wielding. The Sword (Cou/Agi/Str) skill should be taken separately. Wielding two longswords (standard weapons) requires a DEX of +5 or better, but with the character's current stats you could wield a standard weapon and a light weapon in the off-hand (say sword and knife). Alternately, you could adjust his base stats to boost his DEX.

I'm a US marine currently stationed with Sage. He introduced me to rpgww about a week ago. I started writing a story on Myspace but ran out of ideas. When he showed me this forum i figured I could thread my character into this universe. I'm trying to syncronize his history with the world's. I'm still reading most of wikipedia. I will fix the holes in my biography as soon as I can, though. I just wanted something on the board to start with. Have some of you older members let me know where I went wrong. Editing is now in progress.

I'm tired of trying to find a good way to start so here goes. Until I start interacting I'll put my wanderings here. When someone says something I'll rethink my placement. For now this is my journal.

Journal format is just fine. Just give us a heads-up when you've gotten a chance to check over the stuff we mentioned.

I've looked over everything and I fixed it all. Sage helped so I'm pretty sure I got it all, if not please tell me. I was wondering how I get die rolls done for my stats that need it. If Sage told me I forgot. Also is there some kind of GPS so people know that I'm in town, or does it matter? Truth be told this is my first time on an active RP forum. Are there maps of cities like Doma and New Kilian?

I'm currently a little rusty on Philsys myself, but I think it seems to check out. You do need to designate Two-Weapon Fighting as an [s] skill, though. Also, the board still seems to be eating the base stats for your skills. It might be easier just to surround them with [these] instead of <these>. As for the other questions:

1) Die rolls are mostly done by the GM of whatever RP you join. The only time you have to do any rolling for your stats is when you gain a level, and then you just use your own dice.

2) It' a play-by-post board, so all that matters is whether you have the internet access to post.

3) There are a few maps of Doma City. The most recent one is a few posts down in this thread . Other cities won't be likely to have a map, and if they do, it's buried in obscurity.

And finally, if you're looking for a way to get started, this RP needs another character. You could go ahead and apply there.

I've added somethings to my history to make me being in Doma more believable. Thanks for the help.
