Joachim Debars
Eyes: Light Blue
Hair: Dark Brown
Skin: Tan
Height: 5’10”
Weight: 145 pounds
Age:17
(2nd Gen)

&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp Joachim Debars would be an important young man in his home town. The only son of the local merchant lord, he was marked as a man to watch, and considered an important personage by everyone he knew. Naturally bright, he was expected to take over the business from his father at some point, and groomed for that purpose. The world seemed alright, and Joachim thought he had found his place in it. Namely, he had found himself at the top. It took one trip with his father to the city of Doma to dispel those notions. His father turned out to be a lower middle class merchant from the backcountry, not the great merchant lord his son had thought him. Determined now not to be trapped in the family business, Joachim applied himself instead to learning what he could about magic. He steadily developed his natural ability, and within a year and a half his father had given him up for a lost cause as a merchant. Joachim was regretfully sent to study magic at Gunnir Academy, where he’s been the past year.

&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp Joachim’s background has given him something of an inferiority complex, especially towards his peers who are obviously better at magic or who come from wealthy families. He can be a difficult person to get along with until he’s better acquainted. Despite his short comings Joachim is a talented and smart man, and a fair friend to those who take the time to get past his opening remarks. In his time at Gunnir he’s been busy applying his merchant background, with little success, to breaking into the school’s black market, a semi-underground network that circulates everything from test questions to hard to acquire spell components. He has chosen Basic Elemental Studies(Air) as his major, with a second major in Illusion. His fighting style is a mix of Type II(Offensive) and TypeV(Trickster), suitable for an illusionist who also likes to make things sizzle.

--Abilities—
[Middleman=4] Item Finder – Joachim fancies himself something of a trader. He keeps a small stock of items and has numerous business connections. For common items (TP20) Joachim has a chance of [Rank] * 3 + 1d20 to have at least one in his personal stock and if he doesn’t have it a chance of [Rank] * 4 + 1d20 to have business contacts with someone who does. This ability has no effect if Joachim is away from his stock or in an unfamiliar market. If given time however, he can establish new connections and restock. To return to full effectiveness takes at least 7+1d10 days.
[Trading=4] Haggle – Joachim is good at finding items of value and getting good deals on them. Subtract 5-10% from the base value of any item when a successful skill check is made.
[Lightening Magic=2] Static Shock (8MP) - Deals 8+rank*2+2d6 damage to 1 Enemy.
[Lightening Magic=4] Split Bolt (29MP) – Deals 10+rank*2+3d6 damage against up to 4 enemies within 10 meters of the caster.
[Illusion Magic=1] Illusion Barrier (5MP) – Joachim creates a one dimensional, opaque “wall” of illusion, on which he can broadcast any image he likes. The dimensions may not exceed 3 meters by 3 meters.
[Illusion Magic=4] Disguise (8 MP) - This illusion allows the caster or a target to take the appearance of any object which the caster is familiar with and can imagine clearly. However, the target is NOT transformed into the object in actuality, and a physical inspection (touching the target) will make this obvious.
[Illusion Magic=4, Deception = 2] Phantom Double (12MP, 4TP) – Joachim creates an
Illusionary reproduction of himself and uses it to draw fire in combat situations. All enemies and allies within visual range must make an Int check or be unable to tell the real Joachim from the Double. The Double can take up to 10 HP simulated damage before dispersing. Its Mblock and PA are equal to Joachim’s own.
[Applied Magical Theory=2, Lightening Magic=2] Minor Electromagnet – By running a current through the wire wrapped around his walking staff Joachim can create a weak electromagnet. Everyone within a 2 meter radius must make strength check at TD10 or lose any object that could be attracted by a magnet

You can reasonably infer that it's level 1, especially when you consider how recent the post is and the fact that no skill is above 4 ranks. A lot of people forget to list their level. <p>-_-___-___-___-_-

The reason I ask is because I was under the impression that [Random magic spell=X] meant that the number (which X is substituted for) was the level required to use that particular magic spell.

Just wanting to clear that up...

Nope. The number is the minimum rank of the skill tied to the ability needed.

EXAMPO: You'd need 2 ranks of Fire Magic to cast a spell that required [Fire Magic=2]
