Not expecting the container to be that far below the waves, James is a little caught off guard by the rush of water. He helps Samantha to her feet as best he can, but realizing they might have more pressing concerns as the cane tugs away, he turns to glare at the old man. Seeing Rachel tackle him below the waves, he figures maybe the problem's been the one-on-one fighting they've managed so far. Keeping hold of the cane, he leaps towards the man, using it to help Rachel hold him below the surface, almost snarling at this point.

The old man's taunts ring in her head, drawing a defiant snarl in response. Clenching fists at her side Sara fixes him with a cold glare.

"You are nothing but a deceiver, and hardly the great one!"

Daniel's calls for the knife go unheeded as she slogs through the water and throws herself down to lend her weight to Rachel and James' attempt to accomplish what she had attempted.

With the door open, water flowed into the container at a faster rate, and knee-level submersion quickly passed waist-level. Rachel executed her angry tackle before it rose high enough to interfere too greatly with her speed, and dragged their captor down into the water. As she pushed him down and tried to hold him under, the rain of rage-fueled punches she was hammering down kept him spasming and thrashing in ways he didn't want to, prevented him from bracing himself to push back up out of the brine for a moment. Then, just as Rachel's arm was tiring (punching through rising water was rapidly losing its effectiveness and the wounds the bulleting coins left in her were starting to burn fresh as the adrenaline peak began to fade) and just as the submerged man got his hands and feet planted in preparation to fling her off as effortlessly as he had Sara, James lunged into the fray and used the cane to pin the man down as best he could. This set up another round of surprised, panicked struggling, but once the surprise was past he tensed to push up again -- only to have a third body lend their weight to the effort as Sara joined in.

Now his thrashing was becoming more controlled, earnest struggling. One person was easy enough to cast off for one in his state if he could generate enough motion to amplify his own force with the power that filled him, as had been demonstrated when he flung off Sara and in his assaults on James and Rachel. With two and a surface to brace against, he would still have leverage to exploit. Three was proving trickier -- Rachel had his legs pinned under her, James' weight on the cane against his back was pushing his chest flat against the floor of the container and making it much harder to position his hands to push up, and now Sara was holding him down as well.

The scattered coins in the container started to fly about anew and the cane vibrated and jerked violently in James' hands, but the stress of holding his breath made their captor's control over these objects much less reliable than it had been previously. Before, the coins had whizzed through the air at deadly velocity, their edges tearing through steel like it was paper. Now they tumbled end over end through the air in erratic paths and only ricocheted dully off the container walls, while the cane only needed a surer grip to keep it from striking at the people holding him down.

He still had one hope in that, with the water rising, it would soon become more difficult to hold the glowing man down without being submerged themselves.

James keeps at it, doing his best to work with the others' efforts without letting up his own. He coughs against the rising water, doing his best to keep himself above it, waiting for the old man's struggles to stop. Thoughts of what might come as the water continues to rise flit through his head, but he does his best to push them aside, focusing on the present threat to their lives. At this point, he cares about little more than survival, about doing his best to make sure he and the rest can get out of this can.

One last flurry of coins bounced off the ceiling and walls before they plunked one by one into the water, never to return to flight. The thrashing beneath Rachel, Sara, and James became more energetic, but less frequent, desperate bursts of struggle that had less and less chance of helping him as the rising water pulled the drowning man from the floor and the resolve of his former captives intensified. There was one final burst of bucking that went on and on for what felt to them like minutes but in fact lasted less than half of one, an angry roar vibrating uselessly in the water underneath them, and he at last went still in their grasp.

The seawater lapped at Rachel's nostrils, but the container had resumed its rearward list so the taller James, one dead old man's length further back in the container, was submerged in equal proportion.

Then the drowned man exploded. Again.

The sensations were similar to what they'd all experienced when they'd first beheld his impossible, incomprehensible nature, but at the same time very different. Their first sight of him had been a dazzling show for their senses that evoked a primal response, but it was essentially just that, a show. This surge of brilliance, on the other hand, packed a physical punch. It was as if all this time that the light had been trapped beneath his skin since he was stabbed, whatever mystical form of energy it was a manifestation of had been building up in him like steam in a pressure cooker. Now, with his death, the lid had blown.

For one final glorious instant the light blazed out of him and slammed into each of the five in the container, and with it a shockwave that hurled the ones holding him down away from his corpse and into the walls. The light wasn't just bright, it was pouring into their eyes, and the roar of the release flowed through their ears and it seemed as if the sound from each side collided in the center of their brains. For one white-hot instant every inch of their skin was alive in a way they'd never before felt, the light clinging to them as if it had substance then seeping through their pores and almost electrifying their flesh. All of them knew instinctively that they were being bathed in far more than just light and sound.

This was the unbridled power of Creation itself.

The pain was gone. All of it, every broken bone, every coin-shaped puncture, every bump, bruise, even the leftover aches of their earlier confinement vanished. There was no special tingle besides the sensation that already coursed through them as fractures sealed and skin knit without a trace of scarring; they simply found themselves whole again.

There was no time to process their instantaneous recovery from their various injuries, no time to discuss, or even to panic, just a boiling rush of adrenaline and empowerment. The shockwave that accompanied the flood of power sent the container itself reeling and shuddering, tumbling around like the cylinder of a washing machine as it finally fully submerged. The flashlight flew out of the lashing ring, cast its beam disorientingly around as it spun, then plummeted down to the bottom of the container. The door, now their relative ceiling, had been hurled fully open by the force of their captor's demise. Water rushed relentlessly into the dark.

To Be Continued

((So concludes our first Action Scene and our first Episode! Episode 2 will pick up in early December. I'm taking the rest of November off from RP stuff to tackle NaNoWriMo (also the reason I delayed getting this up, sorry!). I have a lengthy post in the works for the OOC thread to fill you in on more of the nature of your Seers and the powers you have to choose from for your first rank-up, if I gain enough ground on my word count to take a break I'll get that up sometime this week. If not, then it'll be posted for certain on December 1st. In either case, Splashdown Pt. 2 won't start until a week after the power guide's posted to give you some time to decide on your first Essence expenditures.))

Previously, on Seers...

Feeling the tang of the air as he breathes in, James snaps awake, peering about in confusion as he tries to orient himself and figure out what's going on.

As sensation returned with the memory of her brutal death still fresh in her mind, Sara let out a wrenching sob now that her breath had not been cruelly stolen from her.

With a few shallow coughs expelling what had been smoke and ash settled in her lungs, Rachel awoke. She hung quietly for a moment, not really processing what had happened. And then it came back to her. And she began to scream at the top of her lungs. "AAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!"

Samantha's wits came back to her shortly after her senses did. Neither liked what they found. "Let me go, you sonnuva bitch! I'll kill you!" she cried hoarsely at nobody in particular.

"So, hello, I'm Daniel. Did any of you die before waking up here?" He looks around the lightless area, sniffing at the air and wrinkling his nose at the sharp scent of saltwater. Without waiting for an answer to his first question, he moves on. "...Are we in a shipping container?"

The doors opened fully, hauled apart by what registered at their very first glimpse as a slender man in a gray suit with receding white hair, a prominent aquiline nose and a cruelly thin mouth. ... An instant after they laid eyes upon him, blinding light unlike any four of these five had ever beheld exploded out of the cruel-lipped man's body, flooding the container with a blue-white brilliance that seemed to boil the world itself out of their vision.

It was the light all over again, forcing Sara to squeeze her eyes shut and avert her eyes from the divine figure before them. The sight before her was enough to give some semblance of comfort - enough to get her breathing under control if for no other reason than to fall back into the prayers she had recited with her mother every Sunday in Serbian.

He mused something aloud, but the one word he uttered came in a thousand thundering voices speaking a thousand tongues, a senseless cacophany that pounded into the ears of all the captives like a sledgehammer swung at their eardrums. Only one of them would understand. ... Daniel cringed and squinted his eyes, not that it helped stem that awful tide of light coming from their captor. ... "What is? What are you talking about?!" ... He regarded Daniel with the same kind of incredulous doubt any human might display towards a dog whose bark sounded eerily like a word.

Before the shining man could follow his first words into the radio with further instruction or warning, a heavy THWANK rang out. He dropped the walkie-talkie and staggered a few steps further into the container before collapsing with a groan at Daniel's feet and clutching at his head. ... A newcomer stood where the shining man had a moment ago, holding a fire extinguisher triumphantly overhead with shaking arms and a worried expression.

Virgil jabbed a finger at the man he'd knocked to the ground, who was already groggily stirring. "Someone needs to tell me: what do you see there?"

"A...a man, but...but he's....he's...Surrounded in a coruscating gleam that suffuses his flesh and shines from his eyes and mouth, seething out of the very pores of his skin in a luminous vapor that coalesces into a brilliant corona that seems to outline him from every angle..." With his speech done, James stares blankly at the possible savior; it's precisely right, he knows that, but he hasn't a clue how or why.

Daniel looked pleasantly relieved that his restraints were finally being tended to before the situation could get any worse, but that flash of optimism was quickly dashed when their rescuer suddenly pinned his arm back against the container wall and, his grip on the knife finally secure, slashed his blade across Daniel's bicep. ... With that, he grabbed the shoulder of the shining man's jacket and, despite a sudden burst of disoriented struggling and a many-voiced shout of protest that thundered in all the prisoner's ears, shanked an old man unceremoniously in the gut.

"They have to think they succeeded or they won't stop, I'll do what I can from here. My name is Virgil --" A series of tremendous thudding sounds from the roof of the container drowned out his next several words as the ship's crane latched onto the box. "--L.A.! I'll tell you all that I know, I promise you, but whatever you do: do not contact your families until we've spoken." Virgil looked around at them one last time, regret and apology etched deeply upon his face, then stepped out of the container and one after the other shoved the doors firmly shut.

The initial uneven upward lurch of the container smoothed out as it was raised higher and higher. ... In the darker end of the container, the wounded old man pushed up to his knees, spat something thick and wet onto the floor. An eerie blue light within strained against the confines of his skin, illuminating him from the inside like a liver-spotted paper lantern. ... Despite his injury, it seemed his breath had steadied. He began to laugh, most bitterly.

As Sara's fingers sought a grip on the screws of her shackles, a few sharp flecks of metal peppered her cheek. ... When she jerked at the shackles, however, not only did the loosened clamp open enough for her to pull that hand free, the tightly-screwed cuff around her other wrist snapped off of the chain entirely.

With a feat of strength that would make a reasonable person believe that the welding was of poor quality, Sam tears the restraint from its place with a pop and a clatter, and then dives for the knife.

"Why! Am I! Naked! You! Creepy! Old! Pervert!"

As she seized for breath against his throttling grip and the spasming in her midsection, Rachel suddenly felt a cold, hard obstruction filling her throat almost to tearing, and tasted metal on the back of her tongue. ... As the container hits the water, though, the sudden jerk is enough to dislodge whatever it is from her throat- A hand full of shiney silver coins in excellent condition, other than being covered in throat juice. Rachel blinks looking at the coins. Then she slips right out of her chains, not even wrenching them free- Just slipping right out. And immediately she's crouching, scooping up the coins quickly.

Samantha was a little too distracted by the fall to notice the position of her knife as she fell back to the steel floor. The realization flashed through her mind just as the point of the blade pierced her arm, and the hand gripping the knife clenched inexplicably shut around nothing as she tried to twist it away before it could do any real damage. She should have been far too late to avoid burying the knife in her forearm, but she must have lost her grip because she slammed into the floor without a knife, and only a dribble of blood from a minor puncture below her elbow to remember it by.

With a horribly shrill scream, Rachel scrambled to her feet, once again tackling the glowing man and using her lower center of gravity to her advantage, before continuing an adrenaline and rage fueled pummeling spree with one hand and, assuming she gets him down, holding him beneath the water with the other. ... Keeping hold of the cane, James leaps towards the man, using it to help Rachel hold him below the surface, almost snarling at this point. ... Daniel's calls for the knife go unheeded as Sara slogs through the water and throws herself down to lend her weight to Rachel and James' attempt to accomplish what she had attempted.

For one final glorious instant the light blazed out of him and slammed into each of the five in the container, and with it a shockwave that hurled the ones holding him down away from his corpse and into the walls. ... For one white-hot instant every inch of their skin was alive in a way they'd never before felt, the light clinging to them as if it had substance then seeping through their pores and almost electrifying their flesh. ... This was the unbridled power of Creation itself.

The door, now their relative ceiling, had been hurled fully open by the force of their captor's demise. Water rushed relentlessly into the dark.

Episode Two: Splashdown (Part Two)

The night swallowed the last wisps of twilight, leaving only the distant twinkle of thousands of stars in a moonless sky to light the still, black ocean from above. Several meters below the surface, however, there was a flash of blue light that illuminated the water for a great distance around a suddenly churning circle of water.

A moment later, Samantha's head broke through the surface and she gasped for air. Next to surface was Rachel, soon followed by her cohorts in desperate murder, Sara and James. Having been furthest to the back of the container that was nearly their tomb, Daniel was the last to make it to the surface. The five treaded water with various degrees of proficiency, exchanging bewildered and disbelieving looks as the surge of adrenaline that accompanied the explosion of energy they had absorbed dissipated. It left them all feeling rather human, and they all quickly realized that was not a very useful state of affairs for anyone adrift in the middle of the ocean with no land in sight and dawn twelve hours away.

Daniel was about to be the first to comment on this situation, but he was interrupted as his mouth opened by the dull thunk of plastic against the back of his head. He splashed away from the impact and turned, and in the faint light dappling the water around them the survivors of the shipping container could make out the dimensions of the object that had clipped Daniel, a cylinder a few feet long and half that length in diameter. For lack of anything else in sight, the five splashed their way to the bobbing object.

It didn't take long to find that there was a handle dangling from the center of the cylinder, attached to a pull cord that fed into the plastic shell. The cord unraveled for several feet before it seemed to hit a snag, but one good strong tug later the cylinder popped open and its contents began to rapidly inflate with the help of a motorized pump and unfold, forcing them to splash out of its way. The clam-shelled container regurgitated a self-inflating hexagonal emergency life raft large enough for all of them in minutes.

If it weren't for the fact that they'd all died and just narrowly escaped murder by a supernatural entity and were stranded in the middle of the Pacific, they'd probably consider themselves lucky.

((And we're back! You've got some time before you reach land, so your characters are finally free to compare notes, get to know each other and make plans for landfall without being chained up with some magical psycho trying to beat the shit out of and drown them.))

Daniel regards the life raft in silence for a few moments before starting to paddle towards it. "You know, if it weren't for the fact that we all died, almost got murdered by an evil glowstick, and are now stranded in the middle of the ocean, I'd say we got pretty lucky."

He fumbles his way into the life raft and offers his hand to anyone else climbing on. "Are you all okay? I mean, relatively speaking."

James does his best to help any of the injured onto the raft before getting in himself, hissing through his teeth as the natural adrenalin finally begins to fade as much as the supernatural variety, the pain of his injuries starting to flood back to him. "...think that...thing cracked one of my ribs, but...I think that's it. That and a lot of bruises." Once in the raft, he keeps as still as possible, peering around the horizon and looking for any sign of life anywhere outside their raft.

It took James a moment of that stillness to realize that, while he certainly remembered the pain of his rib being broken and the other knocks he took, his injuries along with everyone else's had healed in the moment they had been bathed in that...

James:
Spoiler:
"...unbridled power of Creation itself."

There was nothing to see on the horizon in any direction, and no signs of life. Apparently all the blood Daniel and Rachel had spilled hadn't attracted any sharks.

Yet.

Samantha takes Daniel's offered hand and scrambles into the raft. She moves quickly into a corner and curls into a ball, arms around her knees. At some point between the excitement in the crate, reaching the ocean's surface, and scrambling into the raft her shoes and jacket she had been cast off, leaving her with a white dress shirt and a long skirt, both unsurprisingly soaked. Little surprise that she's shivering. The half-sobbing laughter on the other hand..

"What the fuck was that?"

Sara surfaces, coughing and spitting as she flails about in the water until seeming to realize that has made it to the surface. The dress she was buried in does its best to complicate her kicking feet, but after getting her bearings the struggle to reach Daniel's helping hand becomes much easier. Despite her best attempts the young woman does little more than hold his hand, the actual effort to get into the boat largely on his part.

She tiredly offers Sam a response as she curls up in her own corner of the raft, "A bad dream, I hope. I hope this is all just a bad dream."

Daniel looks at Sara with something approximating sympathy. "I think we're way past the 'maybe this is just a dream' stage at this point."

After getting a look at the others' funeral outfits, he looks down at his own. He's dressed up pretty nice, although his suit jacket and turtleneck shirt have been pretty heavily damaged by the barrage of coins that went through him earlier, and he seems to have lost a shoe in the struggle to get to the surface. "...Wonder how much this cost," he mumbles.

Despite his calm demeanor it's obvious that, as he inspects the tears in his jacket, his hands are shaking uncontrollably.

Shaken himself, James' voice can't help but quiver a little, his eyes a bit unfocused, his mind elsewhere. "...whatever happened...we're alive now. We're...we made it out, and...now we're one step closer to safety. No one...there's no one trying to kill us anymore...I...I call that a step up. Small one, b...but..."

He trails off, wrapping his arms around himself and doing his best to ignore the chill from his soaked bedclothes. There's barely any conviction in his tone, he seems to be almost reciting by rote. Saying what ought to be said. There's a short silence from him afterwards, before he mutters something to himself barely loud enough to hear, a phrase flowing through his head with barely a clue where it's come from. "...power of Creation..."

Rachel pulls herself up, flopping onto the raft like an ill tempered fish. She eventually scrambles to the side, hugging her knees tightly to both keep warm and keep decent. "'S just a dream." She mumbles after a moment. She then turns to James McBookington, screaming, "Will you SHUT THE FUCK UP!?"

At her shout, James cringes with a slight gasp. His breath a bit quickened, he follows her request and falls quiet, his thoughts still jumbled as he makes a special effort to not think about the last hour. Closing his eyes, he pictures home, the salt air and the sound of the waves (as well as that quiet voice he's been hearing whispering beneath everything) banishing any hopes of his thoughts being any more than his own imagination.

"Whoa," Daniel holds his hands up as if to shield himself from Rachel's shouting. "Screaming isn't gonna help. Look, okay, uh..."

He falls silent for a few moments before speaking again. "...So I don't suppose anyone happened to be buried with a fully charged and waterproof cell phone."

Daniel doesn't wait for an answer, instead just moving on from his stupid question and asking another one. "What'd you say?" He says, looking in James' direction. "Before the screaming. Power of something?"

The mention of a phone draws a roll of her eyes, before Sara sits upright and begins scuttling around the raft, poking and prodding at the sides of it.

"I heard some life rafts have radios onboard in case a ship goes down at sea! Maybe..." Skirting the small irritable woman, she goes about her search as quickly as she can.

The night wore on uneventfully, the one small comfort for the waterlogged survivors being that it was a moderately warm night. While they were left to drip dry without the sun's help, at least they did not find themselves chilled to the bone now that they were out of the water. It felt like the raft was being carried over the water in a consistent direction, but there was nothing but the stars to orient by. Of the five of them, this night sky was most familiar to James, and his smattering of knowledge on a variety of subjects gave him a hunch they were heading east.

While everyone with clothes was busy not offering a single item of apparel to the small, screaming, naked girl, Sara's search turned up a few useful supplies. Zippered compartments along each side of the inflatable hexagon contained packets of dense, nutritious foodstuffs of indeterminate and questionably labeled origin, and a dozen bottles of drinking water. Two of the compartments had cheap but waterproof flashlights, another had a first aid kit, duct tape, and a small kit for patching leaks in the raft. In the last compartment she found a radio handset, though it offered only dead air on every channel. A second device found in that pocket, an automatically activated GPS beacon, blinked steadily and reassuringly in her hand.

Once he'd settled his mind, calmed from the chaos and gotten his thoughts back together, James glanced towards Rachel. Shrugging off his pajama top, at least half-dried in the warm night air by now, he hands it over to her. Mm...sorry. Rough...rough time for all of us, I guess."

Looking up into the sky, he sighs. "We're going...I think we're going east. Not that that helps if we don't know where we are..."

"Great, so we'll either land on the West Coast or in Europe.. or Africa, or.. someplace," Sam mumbles. Her eyes flicker over to the GPS. "Unless they get here first. What the fuck is taking so long? Don't they know we're in the middle of the goddamn ocean here?"
