For now, Sorter just holds the door open, waiting for one of the others to follow him back here.

Having spent the past few minutes calming himself down, Max missed most of the conversation and ensuing argument. The slight pressure change caused by the back door being opened shifted Max's attention, and he curiously followed Sorter through. He watched with interest as Sorter opened the next door.

The clothing store was inviting, but Max once again found himself concerned. Sorter stood with the door open, expectantly, but Max had no intention of going through first. He was still considering the ramifications.

Ellie watched the ensuing argument unfold with her arms crossed. She wasn't sure how to get the two to stop arguing, especially because she also wanted Mac to go crawl through the vent. When Sorter caught her attention, however, she was thankful that the argument had ended nicely. She walked over to the open door and thanks Sorter, kissing him on the cheek, then skipped inside the clothing store, immediately going to town finding some nice things to wear.

"Huh. Guess yous ain't so useful after all." Harry conceded, shrugging and moving away from Mac. That Sorter had talent. He was also easy to shove about, or so Harry thought. Still, it didn't sit right with him to take the man's work for granted. "Thanks pal." he said, slapping a hand down on Sorter's shoulder as he ambled past him into the store.

Harry wanted something low-key. He could worry about getting sharp threads later. All these clothes looked strange though. "Goddamn fashion." he muttered to himself as he tried to find something in his size.

As the group descends upon the clothes inside, they find, for the first time in years, rows upon rows of low-key, comfortable and, if they were actually purchasing, affordable clothes. There's not that much in the way of fancy dresses or suits, but plenty of roomy t-shirts, pants, even undergarments and shoes. Hoodies and turtlenecks, raincoats and such. And, as if someone thought of them when they stocked the store, there're a large amount of duffelbags and backpacks, perfectly suited to stuff with more clothes.

[Go ahead and pick whatever you want, and describe what you guys will be wearing for now. Once you're done, we'll handle the transition to the next day, unless there's something more you guys want to do]

Ellie saw the bags and immediately grabbed something that looked like a purse, but was big enough to act as a backpack. As she moved about the store, she grabbed sweaters, leggings, skirts, undergarments, and a jacket. In all she grabbed stuffed into the bag enough for three days' change, not including the clothing she was putting on in the fitting room. She wiggled into black leggings and a pink-plaid skirt, then put on the form-fitting turtleneck sweater. After getting out of the fitting room, she also grabbed a pair of sunglasses.

Staying quiet from the attention poured on him (to his eyes) as people enter, Sorter waits for them to pass through the open doorway. Once everyone heads inside, Sorter slinks behind them, jamming the door open for now to save himself some trouble later. Grabbing one of the dufflebags, he grabs an array of clothing in darker colors, though ignoring anything pure-black. He changes himself into a navy-blue button down shirt and charcoal-gray jeans, keeping his tattered coat with the outfit for whatever reason. When he's finished grabbing what he wants, he busies himself for a few minutes in a far corner of the store away from the others, rearranging items on the shelves, before spotting Mac. Approaching her quietly along the shadows, he speaks up in a quiet voice once he gets near enough to be heard.

"Sorry about the vents...wasn't known. It'll be remembered later...won't be suggested again."

Harry had found something he liked. A grey tracksuit. With a hood, too. It was familiar. As the others dashed about frantically he stood still, gripping the garment as his face creased and memories trickled back down from wherever they'd been banished to. He found Black and white sneakers. Matching pants. A black hat. A grinned, both at his own stupidity and how good the clothes made him feel. He fell into sync with the others after that, shovelling spare garments into a bag for the long road ahead.

People bustled past him into the clothing store. Max opened his mouth to say something to each as they passed, a warning or plea for prudence, but closed it again quickly before any words escaped. When the last person entered and nothing happened, Max decided it was safe to go inside.

Once in he glided about, devouring the riot of colors and fabrics. It was, in a way, entrancing. He saw the others grab clothes and change or stuff them into bags. He also saw the registers located throughout the store. They were strange contraptions, very unlike any he had seen before. But their function seemed obvious. In a quick stroke of brilliance, he rushed out of the clothing store and back into what he had decided was the granary. Sure, they had stolen food from this place, but that was necessary to survival. The group already had clothes, so should endeavor to pay for them. Since they had no other means, Max felt justified in stealing more food and gifting it to the clothing store. So he gathered as much bread and cakes as he could carry, walked back. He placed the payment as neatly as he could on the counter next to the register. Pleased with himself, he then proceeded to walk about the store, admiring the colors of the clothes and the choices of his new friends. He took a hint from those around him and began gathering clothes. A duffel bag served as a repository for any article that caught his eye, regardless of the item's gender. It became filled quickly. For himself, he found a long pair of jeans and a solid grey shirt.

As he walked, he happened to catch a glimpse of himself in a full length mirror. The sight was.... startling.

(Sorry to post an entirely OOC post, but I just realized I forgot to mention this: Sorter's going to be picking up clothing for TJ too. Just generic stuff that looks like it'd fit him and that he probably wouldn't mind wearing that much.)

Mac picked out a coat much like the one she already had, except much nicer, and more modern. She also got a loose fitting button up shirt, and nice slacks. Finally, she grabbed a nice hat to match her coat.

"Can we go now?" She asked.

With food and clothes, the group finally decide to return to the shed at the school. While still composing an odd collection of fellows, they were no longer dressed in rags and large trenchcoats (mostly), and thus they made their way back to the school with just a few odd glances from the humans, the normal people who lived in the town. As darkness descended above the small town of Steilacoom, silence too settled like a blanket, with only the odd bark of a dog breaking it.

At Saltar's Point Elementary, there was a faint sound of music coming from the main building, but around the PE area, the shed remained as closed, quiet and out of the way as usual.

As they walked back to the shed, Ellie was brimming. She had nice clothing, and she had more of it than she had had in some time. She also commented on the others' clothes, mostly in the positive, though sometimes commenting that one person would have looked better in purple than they did in blue. Overall, though, she was happy and seemed to be attempting to spread as much cheer as she could among the generally gloomy bunch.

"So, anyone have any plans for tomorrow? Now that we're not dressed in rags, we can actually go out in daylight without fear of being locked up or attracting too much attention." As soon as she mentioned attention, however, she glanced around to see if anyone was watching them. It had become something of a habit after her time in that other world.

The trip back was a nice respite, helping Sorter to calm his anxiety about the others. Not all his anxiety, mind - he can never keep from thinking about his former Master for long - but enough that he's slightly less skittish, at least. Yet even with the new clothing and the regained mental balance, the idea of heading out in the day strikes a strange fear in Sorter's heart that can only be half-explained by the concern of being found by the fae. Just the idea of light flooding everything...he can't explain it, but even thinking of it makes him want to pull into the shadows. He can't say this, though.

Instead, he glances briefly to Max, feeling his curiosity to be a good way to quench his fear. "...I was hoping to learn more about what Max did...if he would teach me, at least."

Harry, now sprawled out against a wall, grunted in annoyance.

"Waste of time. Yous all seems like capable sorts. I know a guy who knows a guy who can get us work like what we did tonight."

Harry didn't mention how long it'd been since he'd last saw the guy. Then he started to wondered how he and all his comrades had taken Harry's disappearing act.

As the others approached the shed, the door slowly opened. A familiar wrinkly, bald face poked out and looked at them. He smiled just slightly, and tried once again to choke out some words. He stopped the painful display much more quickly than usual and shrugged. He went back inside, the door left hanging open.

Harry shot a scowl at Sorter, momentarily enraged by the little man's defiance, before the shed door opened and provided him with the distraction he needed to keep his cool.

"We brought yous stuff." he announced, muscling through the door and finding the spot he'd been inhabiting before. "Anythin' happen?"

Ellie walked through the open door and sat down in the chair that she had taken as her own. She started going through the clothes that she'd "bought" and started putting them back into the bag neatly, so that it wouldn't get wrinkled or ruined.

TJ responded by pointing with his index finger on the right hand at a wooden crate, and began to write with it, was he was wont to do.

"Many thanks, friends. As for the happenings on the premises, a boy's choir has taken up temporary use of the auditorium space for the moment. Just prior to that, I believe I met someone. However, I could not see this person, only hear. It was very unnerving, but they were most kind, and warned me of the arrival of the choir in time to avoid untimely discovery."

He retrieved his dancing appendage, and set about examining the materials his fellows had brought back from the mall. His first interest was of course food, but clothing would follow soon after.

With things being as they were, the refugees began to once again settle into the cramped, but now a little more comfortable (extra clothes made for good decoration) shed. The rain outside had stopped for most parts and soon enough the sound of music from the school auditorium faded away as well. In fact, it was turning out to be another peaceful evening.

The stale bread tasted well, far from the almost magical flavor of the food in the Other place, it was a welcome piece of normality, and if one didn't know better, the hardened individuals sharing the meal would be just any average Joe or Jane walking down the street.

Cringing from Harry's look, Sorter quickly returns to his shadowed corner, not bothering much in the way of decoration or arrangement. Dropping his purloined goods in a pile next to him, he wraps his hands around his knees, fingers twitching as his glance drops back down to the stolen goods every so often. Though he first hoped to merely stay quiet until Harry's found a new distraction, having no wish to incur his further ire, as TJ describes what happened while they were out he can't helped but have his attention drawn.

"...an invisible person? And you spoke to them? That...what if it was one of them? What if they were looking for us, and this was one of their agents? Did you tell it anything? Does it know where we are?"

(I'm good to move on whenever! Any conversation and stuff I'm happy to take care of over AIM if others are, for the sake of moving things along here. ElComodoro especially; do you have AIM? Because I know Sorter's interested in learning stuff, but I don't want to bog down the thread with their lessons. But I'm up for CI with anyone else too. :O)

Max stood looking at the mirror, alternating between revulsion and curiosity. He hadn't seen what he looked like in........ actually, he couldn't remember what he used to look like. It seemed possible that he had always been like this, but that didn't make sense. Something about the thing staring back at him was wrong. It was too tall, too thin. The arms and legs were too long, and had he always had four eyes? Yet, just when he had decided that the image was wrong and alien, he felt betrayed. Part of him knew this thing was alien, but part of him knew it to be him. It was right in its way, despite its vast, unchallengeable wrongness.

"Can we go now?"

He heard Mac's voice and tore his eyes away from the mirror. He grabbed his things quickly and followed the others home, only half listening to their conversation. He perked up again when they got closer to the shed and Sorter mentioned his name. He didn't answer, but now that he felt safer, less scrutinized, his mind began working through the puzzles. It seemed perfectly reasonable that these people would have the right to accept certain contracts. the trouble was finding out which ones. The rules, deals and stipulations were byzantine at best, and incomprehensible at slightly worse. Then, assuming he, or they, could pinpoint what they had the right to accept, they would need to learn how exactly to accept. But how best to teach them? It wasn't terribly difficult to do, only.... different. The puzzle was..... thrilling. Perhaps he had a book that would help?

When they got back into the shed, Max went immediately to his piles. His clothes he dumped unceremoniously beside him as he tossed books about, looking for something. At last, he found a book of child's fairy tales. It was as good a start as any. he stood u[p in time to here Sorter suggest that the invisible man could be one of the gentry. Max considered the possibility, the water in his veins freezing. However, somewhere, deep inside, was a small light of thrilled curiosity. Max chose not to acknowledge this. Instead, he put the entire matter from his head. He wasn't alone anymore, and he wasn't weak anymore. If the gentry wanted to come get him, let them. He knew their tricks now, and knew he could use them to his advantage.

He walked over to Sorter and held the book out. "We need to figure out what you can do."

Sorter glances over with a start, his nerves already on edge. Too distracted with the thought of discovery, he didn't even notice Max's approach, and the book offered to him only makes him even more confused. "...What do you mean? I can't do anything yet. What is this?" Taking the book cautiously, he glances through it. "...What does this have to do with it? These are just old stories."

(No problem, I'm sure we can get something done for it. If nothing else, there's always PMs.)

The best TJ could offer Sorter was a shrug at the moment. He didn't think it was one of the masters, that didn't feel right. He wasn't sure what had happened either though. He felt fairly safe at least, but he didn't think a note saying as much would do much to comfort Sorter.

As the dusk had transferred into night, silence once more enveloped the little shed that the changeling's had called home for now.

One by one, the compatriots, the musketeers forced together by cruel fate, fall asleep. As they enter the land of Morpheus, the Dream Lord, their minds are free to expand beyond the scope of mortality once more, and to some this might be a harrowing experience... to others, it brings back the good memories from Fae... few as they were.

The hours pass slowly, the occasional scuttle of a critter the only sound beyond the light snores of some, but Max, who has been discovering how much he has changed only truly today, has found it hard to sleep. His attempts to catch some shut-eye isn't helped when he can hear a slight pull at the lock outside, his ears straining to pick up the sound.

Then the rattle of a key-chain, and even a fool would know what is to come!

What does he do?

[I rolled for everyone who has a sheet submitted, and Max was the only one who passed the test. Thus, the rest of you are out cold for the night, the exhaustion of a hard day's labor of stealing things having caught up with you. At the moment the person outside doesn't seem to be in much of a rush, but Max might only have seconds, as far as he knows.]

Max understood dreams. The substance of them, the ebb and flow. They were a second home now, a blank canvas upon which he could paint anything. He never really feared his own dreams, despite his many traumas. His were the easiest to shape.

The problem with dreams is, you have to be asleep to have them. So tonight, he was denied them. Max tossed about, trying to get comfortable, his mind tripping over the discoveries of the day.

What was that sound? The door! Someone was there! His first instinct was to hide in the shadows, away from the door. On autopilot, he almost made it, then realized he wasn't alone. He stopped, caught between instinct and intellect again. He stood in the center of the room, a deer in headlights, staring at the door.

A moment of indecision, then Max leapt as quietly as possible to the door, thinking just maybe he'd be able to hold it closed. On his way he tried to jostle anyone in his way awake. He pushed his weight against it, knowing that he would probably need help to defend against a determined intruder.

Max's indecisiveness almost cost him his preemptiveness, and just as the door was opening he slammed against it, on the handle, stirring Harry, Mac and Ellie on his way over to the door. Outside, the nervous man could hear a surprised exclamation, and someone muttering:

"What in the... Hey, who's in there?"

After the magnificent day that Ellie had been having, her dreams were filled with memories of the old days, shopping with friends and playing beautiful music with those same friends. However, Ellie, unlike Max, was not able to shape her dreams, and her dream took a terrible turn. It went through a super-time rendition of her stay in Faerie, where her master made her watch as her friends grew old and died. She awoke with a start, almost screaming out. It took her a couple dozen seconds to gather her bearings and realize that she was not still dreaming and that it was Max that had jostled her awake. It was during the early part of these couple of dozen seconds that the man on the other side of the door spoke up, which confused Ellie even further, as her mind churned to keep up with what was happening around her.

Max held on to the door for all he could muster, but the people outside, there were clearly at least two (the surprised sound seemed to have come from a woman in fact, while the inquisitive shout had been a man), began in their earnest to break the door open.

Now, much can be said about the state of gym-equipment in the country of the US, but not quite as much about the doors protecting these tools from intruders who may or may not wish harm upon them, but this door in particular stood as an exemplar to all forms of material, wood or otherwise, blocking the otherwise open entrance of disaster.

Max felt the wood behind him creak as he fought as hard as he could to keep it closed, and a creaking sound indicated that the stress this was putting upon it could in fact inflict permanent harm, but for the moment the intrusion was being averted...

"Hey, you in there!" the man's voice called out again, "open this damn door or there'll be hell to pay!"

An impotent threat, one could think, were it not for the fact that Max, hardly the most physical representative of the group, was, along with the wooden door, the only thing keeping the strangers outside.

[Right now, Max has miraculously managed to keep the door barred by himself, but all odds are stacked against him. There is also the matter of the door which is giving off sounds hinting at lots of splinters and an open doorway in the near future. I remind you all that you DO have access to your contracts, although some of your characters may not be entirely aware or in control of them, but it is entirely possible that some memory from fae is stirred by this most dire situation.

To make matters simple, unless something drastic is done, it is very likely that these intruders will be within the shack in another round. God speed.]

Harry hauled himself to his feet and lumbered towards the door, adding his considerable strength to Max's efforts.

"What the hell do yous want?" he rumbled, willing the drowsiness out of his mind and putting menace behind those words.

With Harry's added weight, the door managed to remain unopened for another few moments, and the woman outside spoke up.

"What do we...? You guys are trespassing, and I'm sure breaking and entering comes into that mix to! Come out of there so we can talk, or we're calling the police!" Despite doing her best to sound confident, most inside could tell that the woman was nervous, surprised by the fact that someone was napping in the shed.

The man spoke, "You heard the lady, get out of there, or there'll be hell to pay!"

(To clarify, you're all awake now)

Harry thought he liked this woman. She sounded like she knew her place. Up until she mentioned the cops. The man didn't help matters. He was tired, angry and these people were trying to tell him what to do.

"Yous talkin' to me like that and yous wants me to come out there? Yous right. There will be hell to pay."

(No idea how this works, but Harry's going to use Ogre's Rending grasp and rip straight through that door.)

Max was glad for the help. His moment of decisiveness was long over, and his pale frame had begun to shake with the effort of holding the door closed. Harry was a big guy and a welcome addition in Max's eyes, even if he was a little forceful. Or a lot forceful. It seemed unlikely that there would be any reason that door would open tonight.

Max let his mind trip over the implications of a person coming to the shed at night. It seemed somewhat late for a groundskeeper to be doing rounds, and school didn't seem to be in session at all. Even inspectors waited for daylight. Why were people coming here now? Perhaps today was a holiday of some sort, or tomorrow was. What phase of the moon was it? If not the moon, then maybe a regional harvest festival? No, much too early in the year for that. Perhaps a seeding festival? Or perhaps some sort of mating ritual? He racked his mind for memories of cultures who ritualistically mated with one another inside school gym sheds, but unsurprisingly came up blank. Either way, they would be denied, that door was fastened securely as far as Max could tell...

He had only moments to dive out of the way with a small yelp as Harry started his rampage.

Ellie stood up from where she'd been sleeping, having finally figured out what was going on. She didn't know what she could do to help the situation, however. She was just very glad that there was that door in the way of the people trying to barge in...

Sorter stirs soon after Ellie, jumping as Harry smashes through the door with his fist. And were they talking about the police? Suddenly stricken with terror, Sorter presses into his corner, staring outwards and begging the darkness to keep him protected. And even after his talk with Max, he still finds himself mildly surprised when the darkness responds in the affirmative. Not in anything as simple as words or noises, of course, but he can almost sense its agreement, as the shadows around him seem to grow in strength.

(Sorter's using Night's Subtle Distractions himself, with no exclusions from the effect, even the others around him.)

Ellie's happiness regarding the door keeping the strangers out lasted for a whole two seconds before the sound of breaking wood reached her ear. With his strength, and an unconscious connection to the contracts his master allowed him access to, Harry ripped apart the shed-door, which was already strained to the point of damage, like it was made of paper-machê.

Sorter, meanwhile, found himself almost swallowed by the shadows in the corner of the little house and to the others he vanished like he'd never been there. The darkness, both inside and out, certainly helped him in his disappearance.

Those who hadn't gotten up yet were definitely stirring, missing an ogre of a man tearing through wood with his fists was quite likely impossible. What Harry saw outside, however, most likely threw him off-guard.

Standing there were the owners of the two voices, the man and the woman, but they weren't human. One of them, quite likely the woman, had a pale, almost white hue to her skin and wore a black jacket over an equally white top, her pants the same color as her jacket. Her clothes shimmered slightly in the light from some streetlights that were turned on at the school grounds. Her hair was jet-black and smooth, pulled back and it seemed to stand almost straight backwards in tests, looking almost like feathers, and her features were very sharp, almost pointy. She was simply staring at the open door in wide-eyed wonder, having only taken a few steps backwards.

The man, in difference, was tremendous, easily six and a half feet, if not more, with a simple red, short-sleeved shirt (there was a small logo on the chest, but no one in their right mind would be reading that anyway) and he wore a pair of jeans that looked like they'd seen better days. The man was beyond brawny, his fists like large boulders and the shirt straining against his chest. He had a ruddy look on him, but his hair and eyes were dark brown, as was his beard and the hair on his arms and chest, which was plenty. He didn't look quite as surprised as the woman, instead bracing himself if Harry wanted a fight. He even snarled, 'though this might've been some sound of surprise.

"Wh..." The woman began, but the man was faster, already up at where Harry was and swinging his fist at him!

Strange appearances didn't register with Harry. He'd put on a show and that man wasn't backing down. He body was still stiff and it had been a while since he'd last fought. Didn't change anything. This guy was going down.

(Harry is going to do his level best to floor the big guy and is drawing on some old memories to do so. Duck and Weave in effect, going for a Body Blow.)
