"I don't sense anything unnatural about the woman. Cover me." She walks slowly toward the figure with her las pistol in her left hand and the stone blade in the other.

"We come in the name of the Emperor."

</ooc> I figure she should be left handed just because it fits an ill fated background </ooc>

"Hey, whoah, hold up!"

Jim was in no position to physically stop the wytch, encumbered as he was by the unconscious Ambrose, but that didn't stop him from calling out.

"Let's all keep our distance here until we figure out just what's going on. Make yourself known, stranger!"

Chani had been regaining some color, but she'd walked in silence until Kara moved to approach the stranger, at which point her blade was once more in her hands, steady and aimed at the woman.

"Stand back. Those things came from this direction, if she is not tainted by the Warp like they were, she should not be here." she eyed the female figure slowly.

"In the name of the Great Composer, Him above who directs all things, identify yourself, or help me I will skewer you where you stand."

Kara glances back at Jim; "She may be frozen or bewitched but I detect no Warp taint. I'm best qualified to detect any danger, let me approach her."

Kara continues to walk slowly toward the figure. As she gets closer she'll try to make out more details and continue to sense any Warp activity (psysinscience).

Jim grimaced but kept silence. His training and gut instinct told him that they should shoot the silent woman and be done with it but that didn't sit right with him. For the first time in a while he found himself muttering an earnest prayer to the Emperor for the wytch to be right.

Leveticus will study the woman for a moment, before speaking, "We have come in the name of the Holy Emperor. Who are you and why are you here?" He is careful not to sound threatening, although his hand will be fairly close to his weapons if he needs them.

OOC: ooc, does she bear any resemblance to the Saint Altheria?

No response. The figure does shift a little back and force on its feet, as if impatient.

You've seen Altheria represented in a couple of different ways in your short time here -- "beautiful young woman" is the one thing they have in common (much like representations of Jesus vary widely). The figure is standing in the shadows just within the range of the glow lamp, so you can't really see much. Kara is closer.

Kara moves a little closer, as she said earlier. I will assume she is now 3 meters from the figure (who would be a lot easier to see if the glow lamp was closer), that is, midway between it and the rest of the group.

Spoiler for Kara:
Spoiler:
Another Psyniscience Test. You succeed with a 14, which is success plus two degree of success. You detect if the immaterium is being disrupted and the exact location (alternatively, you could have determined the relative strength, but I know you wanted the location) if it is within 3d10 + PB (3) meters = 27 (!) = 30 meters.

In fact, the Immaterium is being disrupted all around you (but you already knew that). The source is not within 30 meters, however.

You still can't see the figure very well for reasons of lack of lighting, but you can tell that she is wearing a long-sleeved dress buttoned up the front that goes down to the ankles. Her body is obviously very thin with practically no figure. Whatever she is holding is bundled up in cloth.

<ooc> is the woman standing in the middle of the passageway? Is there anything behind her? Does Kara recognize her as the local saint? The skinniness might indicate so... </ooc>

Kara holds the knife point down in an nonthreatening fashion and holsters her las pistol. "I don't detect any disturbance in this woman."

She moves forward to about a meter away. "We are servants of the Emperor and Saint Altheria. We seek to determine the source of the disturbance in the Immaterium."

<<ooc>> what skinniness? Oh that was in THE SPOILER!!!!<<ooc>>

<<ooc>> on any resemblance to Saint Altheria, see the post above yours -- I despoilered part of the text. (Maybe I'm using too many of these things.) Altheria is not, as far as you have seen in your half a day here, represented as unusually thin. <<ooc>>

She is in the middle of the passageway. If anything is behind her you can't see it, since she is at the edge of the glow lamp's light.

Kara moves closer. The figure completely ignores her.

Spoiler for Kara:

Spoiler:
From a meter away, you can see her easily even in the halflight. Her brown hair is up in a bun on her head. She is wearing a long, simple dress that looks like it was of poor quality once and is threadbare now, decorated with a faded flower pattern. She looks like she is in her early 20s but for reasons given below exact age is unclear.

She is gaunt, almost to the verge of starvation, or at it. Her cheeks are caved in, and her gray eyes sunken back into her skull.

She does not acknowledge your existence, but seems to look through you down the corridor behind you. She fidgets with what looks like impatience.

In her arms she holds a swaddled infant pressed to her bosom. Its little face peeks out of the cloth. It is also gaunt. It does not move.

Leveticus moves, let's say, 2 meters closer. The figure is now illuminated by the glowlamp. Her brown hair is up in a bun on her head. She is wearing a long, simple dress that looks like it was of poor quality once and is threadbare now, decorated with a faded flower pattern. She looks like she is in her early 20s but for reasons given below exact age is unclear.

She is holding what looks like a swaddled baby in her arms, pressed to her bosom.

She continues to ignore you, looking through you. You can see her thin chest rise and fall as she breathes.

Spoiler for Kara:

Spoiler:
She's pretty dusty. Maybe from being in a maze of underground tunnels.

The baby moves slightly. A stick-thin little arm pokes out.

Ye Olde Spoiler for Kara:

Rather ragged breathing -- she doesn't look to be in the best of health. the dust is mainly on the hem of her dress, her sleeves -- the usual places.

Spoiler for Chani. Heed the spoiler!:

Spoiler:
You look back. You can see two men walking toward you just 5 meters away. Neither seems to be looking at you or acknowledging your presence at all. They are wearing battered overalls and work boots and hats with wide brims. Both seem very thin. They should ram into you in a few seconds if they keep walking.

The woman's face perks up and she smiles broadly, her eyes glowing as much as sunken eyes can be said to glow. Keeping the baby pressed to her chest with one hand, she waves with the other as if in greeting.

Jim lies Ambrose on the ground. "Whhh..." the priest slurs, slowly regaining his senses.

Assuming everybody glances behind them (which would be the natural reaction), you see two men walking toward you just 3 meters away. Neither seems to be looking at you or acknowledging your presence at all. They are wearing battered overalls and work boots and hats with wide brims. Both seem very thin. They should ram into Chani and JIm and Ambrose in about 2 seconds if they keep walking forward in the narrow corridor.

Ambrose is a bit out of it, holding his head in his hands and shaking it about. He sits up and leans against the wall frescoes. He opens his eyes and remembers where he is and sees the men.

"AAAAAA!" he shouts in surprise, trying to squeeze up against the wall.

Spoiler for Chani:

Spoiler:
A Hard (-20) Awareness Test passed with a 05! (Hard since it's a minor detail and you don't have much time to examine things). You notice that, although the floor is covered with dust, the men don't seem to be kicking up any as they walk.

They ignore you and keep walking. You can see their faces now; they are both gaunt, with sunken eyes. Looks like they haven't had a good meal for some time, or are perhaps suffering from some disease. Both have large beards. One looks to be in his 20s; the other in his late 40s or early 50s. They look kind of similar, possibly relatives. The young one smiles and waves, presumably at the woman who is now behind you.

They are also now about a second from running into Chani and Jim (Leveticus is further down the hall; Kara further still. Ambrose is on the ground and to the side just behind Jim).

Jim and Chani have a very brief period in which they can either whack the men with their drawn weapons, get out of the way by hugging the sides of the tunnel, or do whatever else you want (basically the equivalent of a Half Action in combat), before they run into you.

I need to know what Chani is doing.

The corridor is very narrow, so I'm going to require an Easy (+20) Agility Test to get totally out of the way, hugging the wall (I will adjudicate this once I hear what Chani does).

Note that Leveticus and Kara do not have line of sight to the men, since the view is blocked by Jim and Chani.

Kara can't see more than what I already described.

Chani and Jim both make Easy (+20) Agility Tests to get out of the way.

Chani's Agility is 40. 40 + 20 = 60. She rolls 09 and easily succeeds, flattening herself against the wall as the men go past.

Jim's Agility is 35. 35 + 20 = 55. He rolls 36 and succeeds.

The men walk past and totally ignore them, coming up on Leveticus and then Kara, who can do... whatever they want.

What do Leveticus and Kara do?

Kara is actually further down the hall than Leveticus, but I'll do her roll now since I'm waiting on an action from him.

Kara's Agility is 32. 32 + 20 = 52. The roll is 32. No problem. She dodges to one side and the men walk by, approaching the woman. She grins broadly and happily (the woman that is, not Kara).

Leveticus? Dodge, smack with hammer, shoot with pistol, just stand there, or some other variant?

Leveticus will follow suit and allow the men to pass unmolested. He suspecst this might be one of those hauntings you here about on television where the ghosts are perpetually reenacting some event. (Psychic imprint, or some such)

Leveticus has an Agility of 28 and 28 + 20 = 48%. The roll is 78.

The cleric tries to move aside, but his shoulder is jostled by the older man.

The man moves through Leveticus as if he were not even there, as if the man were a hologram or ghost.

Important Spoiler for Leveticus:

Spoiler:
As the man moves through you, you feel a split second of immense coldness and then become the man. You see through his eyes and think with his mind.

You are looking down a hallway -- the same hallway you were in, but the torches are in place and brightly lit and the wall frescoes are brightly painted. You are an old man. A few feet in front of you stands your daughter-in-law, holding her baby. By you is your son, her husband. They don't look very good, but neither do you. You see no one else. You have come down here in the holy shelter for the ritual.

You are a farmer. You have had a hard life, lost a wife and children before their time. Now the sun above has turned huge and bloated red and your crops have died, and you have a strange bump on your arm that keeps growing. No one has eaten in days. The whole town is dying.

But you are happy, because today is a Great Day. Maybe the baby will live.

Then Leveticus is himself again.

This also requires a Willpower Test to avoid gaining 1 Insanity Point that also causes Warp Shock from the experience. Your Willpower is 48 and the roll is 52, so you gain 1 Insanity Point and 1 Corruption Point, bringing you to 6 and 1, respectively. (You can use Fate Points to reroll this kind of thing -- you have 4!)

The two men stop in front of the woman. They open their mouths and move their lips, but you hear no words. The woman hands the baby to the old man and embraces the younger one. They look quite happy. Then they procede to walk down the hall together away from you deeper into the catacombs (that is, in the direction of where the artifacts presumably are, the way you were heading), backs turned to you.

The carvings feel quite real.

Ambrose pulls himself to his feet (he didn't have to make an Agility Test since he was already against the wall). "Emperor! What happened -- the cherubim -- those people..."

He rubs his forehead blearily. "Those people dressed in antique Famine attire. Where are they going?"

Kara replies to Ambrose; "Father, you were pummeled into unconsciousness but we defeated the cherubim. Abstinence seems to have shut down and either the vox reports from outside are crazy or we've just spent five years down here. And the walls have all changed as if we've really been sent back in time rather than warped ahead. However these people seem to be insubstantial."

She smiles; "Just that... oh and they do seem to be headed further down the tunnels. I'd say we follow them. Are the artifacts located in this direction also?"
