"Don't ignore the facts we've compiled, Vipsanius. Dray's charge, the mnemolith, was undeniably the goal of the attack. This implicates someone with the means to understand its significance."

He removed his index finger from under his chin, and let it drop to his holster, idly. A smile spread across his face.

"I do wonder what you've learned of its contents, Hakon."

Rajender's attention snapped back to the discussion as Dauphin addressed him. His mind had wandered at the mention of his father; he'd already known that the man had been lost to the void and this tale only served to remind him without providing any more detail into his demise. He turned his thoughts to recalling what the head astropath had told him earlier.

"I consulted Master Thaye on the matter. He believes the stone can only be made full sense of by a navigator. He was able to discern the image of an old system set within a nebula, haloed worlds and dust orbiting a dying star. The star flickered he said, regularly even. A hundred and two minutes between intervals. He also spoke of a mind without a voice and an echo of pain, though I cannot say what it means. The navigators will be able to make sense of it, I'm sure."

"Pfah, I am merely advocating caution, Dauphin." Vipsanius bit back, "The void has already claimed the Captain's life, charging headlong towards certain doom may at times seem the right thing to do, but rationality is the only way we can overcome such... urges." He drew a raspy breath and put his left arm on his back, his right leaning on his staff.

"And I never said I doubted it, I merely argue that riches of such magnitude rarely live up to their, aha, ideals. Others have assuredly heard the story before us."

"Others would not, I imagine, have the ability to follow up. Especially not without the mnemolith."

He ran a hand through his hair.

"I do wonder about the flickering of the star, Vipsanius. What do you make of it? Gold and gems are durable; but would that have a harmful effect on any archeotech in the ship's hold? You know as well as I that even a whisper can destroy a secret."

He suddenly looked surprised despite his sunglasses, glancing around the room.

"Where did my drink get off to?"

"Blinking light could be a signal, the ancient language of morse, or something similar." Vipsanius seemed to answer automatically, "or it could simply be a natural phenomena, obstructive elements making it appear as if it is flickering." he frowned at Dauphin.

"If there is any 'archeotech' there, I will find it. Because there is no doubt in my mind that we will be following this trail. I even understand it, with the good captain's relationship to this story and his personal investment considering the attack. However." he raised a narrow finger, "I find this idea of gold, gems and other trivial finds doubtful."

"You speak correctly." he said, nodding at Vipsanius. "The exact nature of the bounty is of secondary concern; my father's gift can either be embraced or ignored and, in light of the lack of any evidence that suggests this is a trap, the latter is a coward's choice. The attempted theft in the market confirms that at least one other party believes this to be an opportunity worth snatching from the hands of another. Speaking of which, what do we know of our attackers? I trust that you've learned something from our captive."

Rajender nodded, recognising the name. "It wouldn't surprise me if he was behind it, given his reputation. Hadarak Fel, despite his propensity for following the fashions trends as a spire-bred youth would, is both a cunning and merciless man. One such as he will undoubtedly be attempting to track our movements and devising a secondary plan. See that you exercise due caution when you conduct your own inquiries."

He glanced around one more time for his missing beverage.

"Of course." He checked both of his watches, smiling.

"Give me an estimated timeframe for our course of action. I'll prepare until then."

"That I shall not know until I consult with the navigators. What I can say is that we likely have a deep void run ahead of us, so see about taking on extra supplies."

He turned his attention back to Dray. "Is there anything else of import you can tell us?"

(Rajender will be heading to the navigators when the meeting is concluded, mnemolith in hand.)

"Alas not, sir," Dray said, "Fel's ship, the Fel Hand, has been in port on a few occasions since my arrival, but that is nothing unusual for a location such as Port Wander." He frowned consideringly, "The Hand has been docked for some time now, perhaps a month. Again, this is not necessarily unusual, particularly if repairs are required, but under the circumstances, I cannot believe it is coincidence."

At the announcement of Trader Fel's ship's name, Dauphin tilted his head forwards and simultaneously brushed his bangs to the side and lowered his shades. His eyes visible, they seemed to indicate an amusedly incredulous expression. It was a combination of small gestures which seemed to come together so smooth and natural as to be practiced. But such things were part of Dauphin's mystique.

"I'll get to it, then."

He exited.

Vipsanius had fallen quiet again, mulling over the conversation they had had, and perhaps still fuming over the insolence of Dauphin. As soon as Rajender left, the tech-priest regripped his staff and stood up, nodding.

"I shall proceed to my chambers once more. If the Omnissiah wills it, I shall be able to discern more about our enemy and the psyker whose pet we brought down..." he spoke calmly as he stepped towards the door, disappearing to continue with what he'd been doing before. He did have time to cast a surly glance at Dauphin though...

Vipsanius:

With the conference at an end, Vipsanius returns to his earlier diversions. The psyber raven seems to have revealed as many secrets as it is going to. With experimentation, he might be able to replicate the design, but it would be a long, involved process. There are of course the bodies to be cut up for parts and otherwise experimented upon. In passing, he notes that one of them sports a crude augmetic leg, stamped with the mark of one 'Magos Aurec Simn' of Haddrack Forge. Either the man or the magos has travelled some distance from home.

Dauphin:

Dauphin repairs to the bridge, taking advantage of the vox-channels to set his various dealings and requests in motion. A conversation with the dockmaster reveals that the Fel Hand has been docked for 27 days, replenishing supplies and allowing the crew some leisure time. Her time at Port Wander has apparently come to an end however, as the ship is even now releasing moorings in preparation for departure. No doubt Fel engaged in various dealings whilst in port, but these are not a matter of public record.

Rajender:

The expected invitation to the navigators' realm is not long in coming, and Rajender is escorted to the very heart of their demesne by a studiously silent guard. The very halls of the ship seem subtly different here, quite aside from the opulence with which House Benetek surround themselves. The stamp of House Benetek is obvious, the Magisterial House's tastes running towards intricate abstract mosaics and servants draped in folds of stark white fabric. The three navigators in residence have quite a large staff, all things considered.

Rajender's host is the youngest of the three, Simonne Benetek. Seated at a low table and garbed in layered red and yellow silks (with the pineal eye thankfully covered by a headscarf), she is a slight figure within her robes, and seems dreadfully young. A casual motion sees one of the servants laying out two cups and a tea service. It seems they will be some little while coming to their business.

((With the others engaged, Race has the option of aiding Dauphin's efforts or pursuing his own avenues. There are the arbites, for instance, who were supposed to be looking into the identity of their assailants.))

Rajender found himself falling back on the skills his time as a noble scion of Malfi had endowed him with. His unease with dealing with such unnatural people was masked by a relaxed demeanour as he made small talk, asking a few light questions and congratulating them on their successful journey to Port Wander. He made sure that he mentioned their encounter in the markets without directly touching on the mnemolith itself. Surely even a group as strange as the navigators wouldn't send a child to meet with the Lord-Captain of their vessel. If they did, well, they'd damn well better remember just who he was.

Frustrated with the lack of breakthrough with the psyber raven, Vipsanius casually dismissed it from his presence, a servitor sending it off to the storage of the explorator, where it would be carefully labelled and stored away in case their master would ever require it again. The storage-system was to the tech-priest himself irrelevant, he took a habit of memorizing whatever he needed to remember rather than to rely on fickle cataloguing to keep his head clear. A clear and uncluttered brain was soft, squishy and prone to collapse.

With the raven out of the way, he resumed, with some revived vigor, to properly examine the bodies of the dead men, and women, who had attacked them. With a surgical precision he set to work, briefly investigating brain and intestines in search of abnormalities in his endless search to find the answer to whatever question he occupied himself with. Revealing very little, the bodies were disposed to be turned into servitors if possible, otherwise rendered into the wonderfully nutritious paste that would keep the crew fed and... well, nutricized.

The leg, however, gave Vipsanius pause, and he spent a few more moments on the corpse before disposing of it, keeping the leg and a sample of tissue. Should the need arise in the future, the man's genome would provide means of identification, and the leg might be useful some time or another. A crude piece of work, but Vipsanius was well aware of the circumstances that could influence the decision to graft an old, beaten spirit like this unto a man. Primarily monetary, of course, but perhaps it was a sentimental keepsakes. Who knew?

Dauphin sent forth a handful from his pool of personal employ to go about the task of dealing with the resupply. His mind was taut with the day's questions. Though he had no time for an extended relaxation session, he fixed himself a concoction and lay down, meditating as his synapses seemed to loosen up.

Options filtered through Dauphin's mind. Fel leaving being coincidence was not probable; and while he did not rely on such things wholly, he felt it would be best to pursue it. His mind flowed towards the path Fel tread while docked. Twenty seven days is an eternity for a mind on a mission. A question bubbled up; was the attack force they faced hired mercenary scum or part of Fel's crew? He let his thoughts swim down one path, quickly scanning any branching deltas from that possibility- would these mercs still be out for them? Would they be easily bought off? , before it doubled back to the main stem and probed the second path. He exhaled, slowly trying to tug his mind back towards the task at hand- discovering the reality, and excising one of those two steams of possibility from his mind.

He sat up, and activated his vox-line to Vispanius.

"How goes the analysis of the fallen? Any signs of warp travel sickness, cannibalism related malnutrition, or similar crewman diseases? Likewise, any obvious tanlines or something to indicate they were not onboard much of their life? Tattoos indicating local gang affiliations, perhaps?"

He waited for the response, closing his eyes, feeling his mind tense up again. Working this way always felt so tedious.

Vipsanius paused in his studies and stood up, tapping the button at the side of his mask that turned the vox-enhancer into a transmitter, replying to Dauphin.

"I have not found any signs of recent travels that would hint of a life not spent in the void..." he mused, looking over the bodies once more, "it is not something I have been looking for, but nothing conclusive has reared its, hah, ugly head... except..."

He stepped over to one of the drone-like servitors and spoke in the strange, number-code tongue of the mechanicus for it to fetch the leg.

"I have found a prosthetic leg from a... fellow Magos of the Technocratic brotherhood... his stationing is a long, long way from here... perhaps the good Dauphin has discovered something us others have missed, hm?"

Vipsanius:

A second, cursory examination reveals none of the telltale signs Dauphin has mentioned. The men seem to have been in good health, though they share the pale, somewhat scrawny appearance common to the voidborn. There are a few tattoos between them, but nothing in any way unified. Their gear, while well-maintained, is rather ecclectic, with no weapons capable of causing a hull breach under normal circumstances. All things considered, not atypical for a bunch of voidborn mercs, though normally one would expect some common feature between them to mark them out as a company. Maybe not an actual uniform, but perhaps an armband, scarf, badge or suchlike. None of these are apparent.

Dauphin:

"Sir?" one of the augur techs says, "We have a vector on the Fel Hand, if it please you. She has lit engines and is making way for a point above the ecliptic." Not exactly news there, after the dockmaster's own information, but such initiative among the crew is to be expected.

Rajender:

The girl has her own skills in the arts of conversation, assaying some small talk of her own, and expressing incredulity that anyone could be so foolish as to assault someone of Rajender's status. At last, the tea is finished and she leans forward, ready to get down to business, "We had not expected a new course so soon after arrival, Trader Haakon," she says, "Are we to assume that some urgent matter has come up, perhaps related to your unfortunate run-in with the locals?" Young Simonne might be, but it seems she has an ear for the important parts of a conversation.

Rajender's opinion of the young navigator had improved enough for him not to take offence when she brought the conversation to the matter at hand. She handled herself as well as he would expect and adult to so, he supposed, this was not some calculated insult on the part of the navigators.

"Something like that, yes." he replied, tapping the casket he'd placed on the table. "My late father left a mnemolith in the care of a servant of the dynasty, an object that became the target of an attempted theft the moment I released the gene-lock on this casket. I have been led to believe that the means of locating the Righteous Path, a long-lost vessel rumoured to be laden with the spoils of war, is contained within. The Navigators of House Benetek sprang to mind when I learned this," he said, diplomatically neglecting to mention his former visit to the Astropathic Spire, "and so I made arranged for this consultation."

Dauphin took a long sip of his beverage, removing his sunglasses and massaging his temple, and fired off another vox to Vispanius.

"I'm trying to sift through too many things. So many avenues of investigation to tell us something that is plain to see - Fel is working against us, his eyes on the lost ship. I just need to know what methods he has, and is, and will employ.

...Remind me what state the bird is in? I would imagine it would be impossible to coax its directions out of it. I have an alternate plan to discover its intentions with our Captain's trinket. My brief meditation has brought into my mind's focus a phrase used to denote the straightest path between two points. Now, supposing you can accurately recall the events of the skirmish, and chart out, say, point Zero, where our flying friend snagged the bauble- and then plot its course up to its demise- point A... I feel the creature, however charming as you fancy it, is possessed of such a fittingly simple mind, it would follow a straight line.

It really is a poetic phrase- doubly so for our purposes, Vispanius; and I think you'd be well to derive some pleasure of it: 'As the crow flies.'

He grinned into the vox system's mouthpiece, smugly re-donning his shades.

Ol' Vips had dug into these new "discoveries" with increased vigor, realizing that potentially any detail on the bodies of the men could hold a hidden gem of information that could lead them to this Val. To Vipsanius, however, the dealings of rival traders mattered little, he was more interested in what he could learn from this conflict. Whoever one was, to him, fairly irrelevant.

So when Dauphin called him again Vipsanius listened as well as he could, finding the man's slow manner of speech infuriatingly time-consuming, and several times he'd started a "Yes, b-" or "I th-" only to realize the man was still talking. INFURIATING!

Finally, with Dauphin having said his little pun (Which he certainly found amusing, yes, but he wasn't going to give him that) he nodded to himself.

"Aha, yes, you are quite right. Although it is a raven in this case but, mmm, we cannot be choosy. Let me begin by giving you an update on the men that I have exhumed for further studies, hah... well, they are all of void-origin, I would imagine... second or third generation overall, the pale hue of their skin does not tell, but bone-structure and musculature does hint. I have discovered several small fractures on some of the men from the falls and such, hinting at a weaker skeleton, myes..." he paced back and forth, "they are not, however, from the same company... or so I would deduct, which renders the question 'common denominator' relevant... I would assume monetary gains, naturally." he chuckled to himself.

"As for the state of the psyber raven..." Vipsanius uncharacteristically scratched at the back of his neck, which gave a wet, yet metallic sound, "I... might be able to recall its path, yes..."

Deir Licaon moved swiftly through the corridors of the old Satisfaction. As the missionary of the vessel in service of the Rogue Captain, he was responsible to present offerings at the Semper Purus Shrine at Port Wander for their safe passage through the Maw.

Strange rumours were running rife on the station about an attack on a rogue trader in the Court of the Dead, and a few basic enquiries revealed it was Rajender who has been assaulted. The Satisfaction's bridge seemed the best place to find some answers. He rushed to the bridge, where he found the usual crew, along with Dauphin chatting over the box.

"Dauphin, rumours are running wild on the Station. Had someone attacked the Captain? How is he?"

Dauphin hung up the vox and wondered how long it would take for the Captain to return. Would he need to nurse his drink? Pacing was important, and sending a crewman to mix him a refill was simply not an option. He resolved to drain it and get himself another to pass the time in a semi-productive manner- when Deir made himself known.

"They were common groxfisted scum. Have some faith in your Captain, Licaon. Or were you hoping you'd have the opportunity to perform a laying on of hands? How naughty."

Dauphin wagged a finger and half smirked, his shaded eyes appraising this situation anew. If a man of the cloth was able to pick up on that sort of rumor, there had to be deeper levels that contained the information he sought.

Rajender:

"Indeed?" Rajender's host asks, regarding the casket thoughtfully, "There have been any number of expeditions in search of the Righteous Path. Some have turned up other discoveries, others have limped into port, and some have not returned at all. A fine prize by all accounts, and certainly one to induce a certain... competitiveness among one's rivals. If I may?" she extends a hand towards the casket, awaiting permission and, of course, the casket being opened.

Vipsanius:

An analysis of his memory engrams yields a pict-capture for Vipsanius of the bird's final moments. The psyber-raven's path was straight and low to the ground, making a beeline for one of the sturdier stalls, set across the mouth of an old corridor. It was, by all appearances, closed. Granted, people had been diving for cover at that point, but the stall had had no goods on display, and the rotted curtains drawn across the opening.

Dauphin/Deir:

The activities of the bridge continue around them as Dauphin awaits a response from Vipsanius. As he ponders however, he recalls Dray's comment earlier that their secrets would be sold by any casual agent they might employ the moment their backs were turned. Had Fel left any secrets in the hands of his own agents aboard the station? It was something to think on.

Vipsanius' discovery made for an uncomfortable tingle at the back of his throat. A part of him was, while not surprised, astounded by his own genius, clearly the retrieval of this kind of memory was yet more proof of his utter superiority in the technological wielding, on the other he'd have to tell the others, Dauphin especially, in a toned down, matter-of-factly way because they just would not understand the many, wonderful factors of his discovery.

"Dauphin," he spoke over the vox once more, sighing, "I have discovered the last path of the psyber raven, and it points towards a stall near where we were attacked."

"I believe that what we possess here is a genuine lead." the Lord-Captain replied, unlocking the gene-key and offering the casket to the young navigator now that she had asked. "I doubt my father would have left this behind if it were based upon nothing more than rumour and conjecture."

Dauphin grinned, returning to the vox without waiting for Deir's response. "Then I believe we should prepare for a day out. If you'd like to bring a security personnel member or two, feel free. But I'll advise that we'd do well to travel light and not attract too much attention. We're going to be following in Fel's footprints, and it would be bad form to leave much of our own. Meet at the shuttle bay within the hour."

He daintily hung the vox up, and turned towards Deir.

"We're going to follow up a lead. If you'd like to lend a hand in hunting down info on those who've challenged your captain, you're more than welcome to tag along."

Deir anger rose to his face " By the glory of the Emperor, next time you take confession I swear I will make sure you bow to your knees. I will prepare my soul and recite the verses of the militant monk "Preparium porum Attakum. I will be there in one hour"".

Deir did not waited for the reply and went to his chamber, while exiting the Bridge Deir shouted "By the glory of the Emperor!!!".

Vipsanius had a few servitors that would serve, if anything, as good human shields, and at the moment he was quite certain that whatever lead they had was as cold and unfruitful as the void itself... still, Dauphin had a certain knack for finding out things that a logical mind would not consider ('hunches' would be a scientific field the day he lay in his grave), so where would the harm be.

He moved after some preparations to meet Dauphin at the predetermined location, itching to get this over with.

Having resolved his business with the navigators, Rajender emerges from their realms to learn that Dauphin has arranged another excursion to Port Wander in search of more information on their attackers. He has just enough time remaining following the meeting to make the rendezvous at the boat bays. The others, with more warning, make it there in plenty of time.

Like the rest of the ship, the boat bays are a hive of activity as various stores are laid in while they're docked. The tech-priests also seem to be performing the rites of maintenance on a couple of the cargo lighters. Keeping the small crafts' machine spirits satisfied is an ongoing process, and it is rare to see all of them in service at one time.

Rajender wasted no time in relating the conclusion he'd come to during his consultation inside the navigators' enclave; it was entirely possible that the psyker controlling the avian pest Race had blown apart had managed to obtain a partial reading of the mnemolith through the familiar's brief physical contact with it. Being informed about the exact nature of the bird only reinforced his belief that Fel (for he was now convinced the man was the one who'd acted against them) may already be en route to the prize that rightfully belonged to the Hakon dynasty. Only after expressing this did he remember to mention the rest of the meeting. The star was a pulsar, often used as realspace markers and quite distinctive. It shouldn't take much trouble to locate the system on an chart. Making their way there via the warp was the trick however, and navigators were currently investigating their collection of warp-charts. With luck they would already possess one a usable route. If not, well, they'd just have to find one.

"If Trader Fel is already on his way towards the Righteous Path then we might be able to follow him, provided we can uncover what route he has taken."

Licaon rushed to his chamber, his eyes were flashing in anger and everyone that saw him looked away. Licaons' temper was well known at the ships and everybody accepted it as common. Licaon reached his chambers started packing his stuff and things that he may need. He took his most prided possession "Feurio" the flammemwerferum.
Licaon recited the old carving along the grip

"Emperum, Emperum!!
can you hear me?.
Devote my arm
Devote my will
Feurio is coming!!
"

Licaon exited his door and went to the shuttle bay holding his robes and shouting:
"By the glory of the Emperor!!!".

Dray, present as the resident expert on Port Wander and points beyond, frowns in thought, "The navigators could perhaps track Fel's ship directly, Lord, but the tides of the Maw are strong, and we cannot count on the traces remaining clear. If there is the slightest doubt about the charts, I would suggest acquiring up to date ones, discreetly, of course. It wouldn't do to have several rivals trawling the same region of space for whatever had caught your interest." It sounds very much as if Dray is recalling some previous incident.

Vipsanius had been making his way to the hangar, prepared to head off once more for port together with Dauphin, but as Licaon entered the large, nay, mammoth docking-area, the tech-priest very gently lowered his head for a fraction of a second, delivering a quick prayer to the Omnissiah.

One would think that, with two men of the cloth, albeit of different cults, the tech-priest and the cleric would have much to debate. This was probably the case, but Vipsanius considered himself a man of, sniff, science, reason and, although he wouldn't put it so plainly, empirical faith. The machine spirits were venerated because they worked. They manifested power through the Omnissiah, the tech-god aspect of the God-Emperor, and they worked.

The man had little patience for ad hoc faith.

Graciously activating his vox, Vipsanius sent out a quick transmission. "Dauphin, you knave, spare me this and deliver thyself unto the docking bay."

The reply came quickly; "What of the virtue of being fashionably late?"

Moments later, he was in the docking bay, decked in a simple black suit with silver piping. Bundled about his shoulders, and trailing down his back like a cape, was a silver cloak. Outfit changed as it was, his inferno pistol was still at his hip.

He appraised those that had gathered here, noting the servitors Vispanius had saw fit to include in the away party. He made a show of adjusting his shades.

"Ah yes, we'll blend in quite seamlessly. Off we go then, eh Captain?"

Rajender took care to acknowledge Dray's advice. It struck him as entirely lacking in class to follow around one's peer in an attempt to snatch whatever fortune he might happen upon from him. The attempted theft at the market served as a reminder that Rogue Traders were often far from the romanticised and noble figures they were often portrayed as by the ignorant. Licaon's arrival had proven a distraction. Rajender was a man of quiet faith for the most part, but he appreciated the presence of a man with simple convictions and absolute belief in the God-Emperor. "This is a matter of some delicacy, father," he explained, "and subtlety will be required. I would appreciate it if you did not broadcast our coming too loudly. The eyes of unscrupulous and dishonest men will be upon us." Reigning the man's fiery temperament in was a task he'd grown used to.

He smiled in response to Dauphin. "It would be hardly become us to go ashore swathed in rags. Besides, I doubt that there's any hope of Vipsanius blending in outside of the enginarium." He signalled for them to begin boarding, casting one last look around the bay before strolling up the ramp himself.

Licaon had to mentally erase his thoughts of entering Port Wander with Feurio vomiting its cleansing power and liberating those dammed souls. From all the time he had been in company with those men, he was always told to act in subtlety, talk in subtlety. Just like the day before and the day after.
He looked at his Captain saying "Indeed my Captain..." adding softly "...By the Emperor".

"There is no virtue in that, as both you and I know." Vipsanius replied with snide, glaring at the flamboyant man, redirecting the glare at their captain momentarily. The tech-priest paid lip-service to Rajender, naturally, but the recent events with having to re-examine the corpses had left him in a foul mood.

"It would be prudent to point out," Vipsanius said as he motioned for one of the tech-acolytes to climb aboard with them and handle the shuttle for them, "that as followers of Lord-Captain Rajender, we are bound to attract notice, our latest visit to this wretched hive of scum and villainy non-withstanding." With that, he followed in line, his silent servitors shuffling behind him.
