"Alright Hope, Let's go," Emily said internally, prompting her to start manipulating the controls. After a few hesitant strides, the mech soon settled into a steady jog as the pair began to get the hang of their respective roles.

Enzo followed after Emmy and Hope, jogging in a motion that promised to over balance and tip over each step, but kept failing to deliver. After the first fourty feet he improved substantially, and got a rhythm going. He was still as awkward moving as anyone else, but he was learning control quickly.

Alexis picked up speed quickly, having found something she was actually pretty decent with. She had a hard time jogging though, in fact, she set off at top-speed right away and ran in something closer to circles as she just couldn't take the corners at her speed. She finished her laps quickly and hit the breaks fast enough to leave furrows in the ground, her mecha wavering back and forth uneasily before it finally came to a rest, hissing as compressed air was released from mechanized joints.

Max is a little insulted at having to start out doing laps, but it quickly subsides. Honestly, getting to know a new vehicle before you start seriously taxing it is never a bad idea. Max starts out with a jog, but he hasn't even completed half a lap before he starts running. A lap later, he's sprinting. His goal is to see how fast he can push this thing without sacrificing control or stability. He really wants to outrun Scarlett, but if he can't manage that he will at least out-finesse her.

With Hope, Emily finds that she's a bit too eager on the throttle, pushing forward a little too hard without any real measure of balance. Then again, she doesn't seem to have much of a clue what she's doing at all- The fact that she hasn't tipped them over at all is fortunate.

The rest seem do be doing their laps okay- Janda seems to be the most skilled of the Imperials, though her mech also seems the most designed for easy movement. The group of near identical mechs falls into line, one after the other, all following the leader. Emm is going quite slowly; her mech's size must be making it very difficult to get any sort of speed at all.

The Bluesky mechs are also doing just fine, though they're not as advanced as the Imperials- And it shows. IF they intend to seriously get into any Walker combat, they're going to need Casey to overhaul these tubs. Or better yet, provide them with new ones entirely.

Scarlett also seems close to a tumble a few times, but besides those few close calls she manages to make her way through all three laps and back to Rebekah; closer to last than first despite her sprinting, thanks to those close calls. Once she finishes her laps, she heads off the track with the rest of the Imperials, bouncing a bit in place as she waits for the Bluesky mechs to finish so the game can begin and she can show them how awesome they are!

Sam, on the other hand, keeps at a steady, balanced pace about in the middle of the pack of Bluesky, picking up speed slowly as he grows more accustomed to controlling the vehicle. He stands off with his own teammates once he finishes, grinning to himself as he looks around at the rest of his team, checking how he can help out people still having a bit of trouble; Hope in particular, as new as she is, although assumedly Emily is giving her plenty of personal help already.

Emily had been using the laps to give Hope a bit of coaching as they went, hoping to get a steadier hand on the controls. If need be, she could always take over entirely herself, though she'd prefer not to. When the pair did come to a halt in front of Rebekah, she was quietly assessing Hope's improvements and deciding whether she'd be alright for the game itself. Her competitive spirit was being firmly throttled down. Yes, they'd do a lot better with Emily in control, but letting Hope participate and enjoy herself was a lot more important than victory.

As Bluesky and the Imperials line up on opposite sides of the field, everything seems to be going great. It's a bright, sunny day, and everyone seems to be adjusting to their mechs okay. Even Juliet has been oddly chipper recently. As the main team prepares to begin their game, Janet's been getting training for her mech away from the group, with Casey. Casey is calling out simple instructions and double checking the calibration of Juliet's machine. Though it seems there's a problem.

"Put yer left leg in!" Casey shouts, hands cupped over her mouth- Probably more for the benefit of the techs who are helping her with the calibration than for Juliet's sake. "Left leg! In!"

Juliet doesn't respond- At all. Casey takes a step forward. "Can ya hear me in there? Or's somethin' in there messed up?"

There's a moment of quiet...before Juliet's purple mech pitches forward into a straight, wild run forward. The human mechanics, luckily, dive out of the way- But Casey isn't as lucky, as she's punted by the wild leg sweeps of the mech, and sent flying into the stands by the force of it.

Now Juliet's mech is in a full run forward towards the Wunderkind-Specifically Hope's mech. Her proximity alarms are going off, and she's caught like a deer in headlights- She's not going to move. Good thing Emmy's in there with her.

There was a flurry of data the flew from the Intel unit to his squad. Voice commands were foregone entirely, the time it would take to give them that way just wasn't acceptable. This had to happen instantly or there would be more casualties... possibly casualties that couldn't simply be repaired.

Juliet was flagged as a mechanical unit- unpiloted. The flag was overlayed with an image of the letter 'Z' repeated three times in a bubble. In addition, the inside of the elbow and the back of the knee were lit up red. Silvie and Sam's display made it evident they were closest to Emily and Hope. Arrows pointed from their current positions to two new positions between Juliet's Mecha and Emily/Hope. With this there was a rapidly ticking timer, already a precious handful of seconds from reaching "00:00". Kid and Max's displays showed arrows pointing from themselves to Juliet's mecha, with a similar timer.

He'd never worked out a code with them in advance to convey what he was trying to convey. He could only hope they'd get the gist and react in time. He wasn't close enough to do anything himself, as it was with most of the others.

Sam doesn't even wait for Enzo's data stream before he starts charging towards Juliet. He speeds as fast as he can, hoping to tackle Juliet's mech to the ground without causing her or the mech too much damage.

And over on the other side of the field, Scarlett - having no clue whatsoever what's going on, and assuming it's some weird tactic or something somehow - waves her arms at the other team. "Hey! You're not allowed to do that stuff in soccer!"

Exhibiting rather less of a deer-in-headlights response, Emily took direct control and danced neatly out of the runaway mech's path, keeping on the move until she was sure the mech wasn't going to alter course. If the dratted thing was acting on its own, who knew what goals it might be following? Emily didn't like the way it had gone straight for Hope.

Silvie bit her lip and gripped her controls, and felt her heart pound like a phantom ache. Casey yelling, Juliet's mech going haywire, Enzo's instructions - it felt like everything was happening at once! How was she supposed to handle all of this?!

Okay, okay. It was just like real soccer - even if the match was over, and they weren't really playing soccer anymore...oh, nevermind! The point is, when everything's going crazy all around you, sometimes you just have to pick one thing and focus on it. So, she focused on the most immediate problem - Juliet's mech toppling over. With that in mind, she ignored everything else, diagrams included, and made a grab for the wayward mech

With an expert takedown, the runaway mech is completely taken out of commission, not even bothering to run uselessly on the ground.

Just like that, the threat of the mech damaging anything at all is over. Wow, that was easy!

With Juliet's Mech down, Enzo ran to where Casey had landed.

Tell me if it moves again? I think Juliet's just unconcious, but for all we know it could be Byrd in there now...

Sam gets to his feet hesitantly, looking around to see if any other mechs are acting oddly now that Juliet's been taken care of.

Do you know what happened, Enzo? How come her mech started doing that? Did someone hack it or something?

No idea. This wouldn't be the first time one of us had a body problem, though, and Juliet is kind of a unique case anyway. I'll look at her after I find Casey.

With Enzo moving to aid Casey, Emily headed over to investigate Juliet's fallen mech, making sure the thing was thoroughly shut down as her first priority, before opening up the cockpit to free Juliet. Whatever had happened to the mech, she didn't want it running amok again.

Emily remotely shuts down Juliet's mech, and signals the cockpit to open...

..And Juliet simply falls out, seemingly lifeless, onto the grassy field.

"Juliet!"

Silvie couldn't see Casey (or what remained of her), so for now, her attention was focused on the other girl. Her hand slammed down to open her own cockpit, and she shouted, "Come on guys, we've gotta-"

"You all need to <i>calm down.</i>"

Abrams approached the scene in her mech, and her tone now serious, continued, "First order of business, we're going to contact D-52 for repairs and assistance. Second of all, does anyone know Greene's status?"

Abrams was right, of course. He wondered why he hadn't thought of that earlier... he messaged Janet privately.

Janet, we've got trouble here. Casey and Juliet are down. We need a team out here to assist. Juliet has deactivated, and Casey is in pieces. Both of their bodies sent me proper error termination signals, I think they'll both be fine once we get them out.

Then, to the others:

Casey's body is pretty mangled. She'll be fine I think, but she's not going to be happy.

...mangled? What? Is she...are you sure she's okay? What's going on?

Sam looks around, trying to spot Alexis; she's usually a lot more attentive than he is, and she's got better sensors and stuff. Alexis, did you see anyone? D'you know what happened? Is someone attacking us, what's going on? He doesn't even try to keep the panic out of his voice, his family's being attacked and he can't even tell how or why or who!

Alex had been pretty far away when the whole thing happened, and with the sudden chaos her confidence went and she had a hard time steering the mech back towards the others.

Did... oh wow, Sam didn't want to know what the sensors were telling her.

Sam! I... I don't know, it says that they're dead. Both of them. What's going on over there? What happened?

I don't know, but Juliet's mech went crazy and she started running at Hope's mech, and then she wasn't working when they opened her mech, and then Enzo said Casey was ripped apart, and...I dunno!

Guys, guys. It's ok. They're shut down. Casey looks bad but she's not dead in any conventional sense. I'm sure we'll see her and Juliet both tonight, once we're back in the database.

It occurred to him that Abrams probably couldn't hear their etherware based chatter, and after a moment of fiddling he activate the more traditional comms of the mech.

"I've called for help. Casey's body looks like it's totaled, but I think she'll be fine."

They're both gonna be pretty ticked off when they're better, Emily observed, looking down at the utterly still Juliet, How about the mech? Any signs of tampering, or was it just a glitch? It was a pretty hefty glitch if so, to take out Juliet and send the mech itself haywire. Emily certainly wanted to find out what had gone wrong, but wasn't about to hook herself up to the mech and go investigating. No sense giving any malevolent glitches a conduit to another mech.

Confirmed. Janet responds. Your orders are to collect their CPU cores and return here with them immediately. A clean up team has been dispatched to collect their shells. Rivendare wants tests run on Juliet immediately, and Casey's probably pretty mad in there, so he wants her into the database as soon as possible.

With that, it seems like the excitement is over- At least, the events of the real world.

Mission 15: Mocking Byrd (AKA Beast Within)
Deck City: 19th floor meeting room.
March 14th, 3757
5:30 PM

It's only been a few hours since the mech incident. The sunny day has lead to a warm evening, and the weather's actually pretty good as the sun begins to set. However, within the Wunderkind meeting room, the mood isn't so chipper. The team's been assembled at Rivendare's request, as he sits at his spot at the front of the table grimly.

"We have a problem." He begins simply. "With Juliet. Her code is malfunctioning horribly and the techs can't fix it- Everything they do, something else shifts elsewhere to make the error worse. We can't do anything for her. She'd be a lost cause if we didn't have you."

Rivendare stands, glancing out the picture window at the head of the room, overlooking the city. "I want you all to deepdive into Juliet's code. Find the malicious part that's shifting it around on us and remove it. If we can't fix her code soon, Juliet will die. And I'm not willing to accept that."

Rivendare spins again to look at the group as a whole, leaning heavily on the table with his palms flat. "Any questions?"

"Whoa, hold on now," Max cautions, leaning forward in his chair. "I'm as concerned about Juliet as anyone-" Max has a feeling that's probably not really true, but it's actually more true than even he realizes. Currently, he sees it as a good line to cool passions and lead into a request for more information. "But if there's anything I've learned from these little mission breifings it's that we don't do our best when we don't get all the info we can before we go in."

Max puts his elbows up on the table and knits his fingers together. "So, Bossman, you've told us that there's a lot you don't know about this malicious code. But is there anything you do know about it? We should probably know as much as possible about what we're up against. I mean, is it, like... foreign, like a virus, or... or like a part of her that's gone rogue, like cancer or something?"

"As far as we can tell," Rivendare starts, "It's a malicious byte of code that's been dormant. I don't know..Some sort of self loathing or something? It's strange. When we looked her over after she was converted, we never saw this. But there's no virus on Krynus that could infect you guys."

Enzo bit back the timidness he generally felt around Rivendare in person and asked his own question:

"Do we have a timetable? I mean... Do you know how quickly this is progressing?"

He couldn't bring himself to voice it, but he was deeply concerned that what happened to D-52's hacked server might happen to Juliet if they didn't work quickly enough. Having a head's up on how long they had was perhaps not realistic, but one could hope all the same.

After Silvie spoke, however, there was a brief crack in her bravado. She chewed on the corner of her lip for a moment and cast Rivendere a furtive glance.

"But, in case we don't - not saying we won't, just wondering! - what will happen after twelve hours is up?"
