Angels Fall First (Closed freestyle RP)

Unread postby FlamingDeth » Mon Jul 14, 2003 9:08 pm

It was a fine day in Los Angeles, late August of the year 2040. There were light clouds, but not even a hint of rain. A light, soothing breeze cooled down the bustling streets. The air was crisp, recycling technologies having long ago cleansed the air of smog. Indeed, it seemed that all was right with the city.

Sure, there was the occasional crime here and there, but the police reformation that took place after the earthquake kept most of it down. Well…most of the human crime, that is. There were far more sinister events taking place than the occasional mugging. Biotechnical constructs designed to aid humanity, known as Boomers, were doing far more damage than the human criminals could hope for, and thanks to the efforts of their manufacturers, almost no one knew anything about it…

Three floors underneath his upscale computer repair shop, Roldo Gomez sips a modest cup of tea, idly watching a few monitors. The aging Portuguese man had once been employed in Japan, a lower tier technical worker for Bioscape industries. He knew the dangers that these “rogue boomers” posed to society, and was sincere in his desire to contain the danger. As he watched, his eyes suddenly shifted to the corner of the middle monitor.

He reached over to the autodial buttons on his phone, immediately pressing one of them. “Samantha…” he begins. “We have another incident. Please report to the shop.”

Hanging up almost as quickly as he called, Roldo quickly presses another button. “Rebecca, please come to the shop. Samantha has already been contacted.”

As he ended that call, he relaxed in his seat. He was required to call the girls far too often these days…

Meanwhile, a bus pulled to a stop outside of a midsized mall, people of all shapes and sizes filing out of it. The mall was a popular place in the neighborhood, as most anything people would want was available there, from food to toys to electronics to videogames to clothing, and was within’ walking distance of many more of the city’s attractions. It was also a popular stop for the resident unskilled workers, as it was almost constantly hiring new employees.

A janitorial boomer stood by the bus, cleaning up the sidewalk a few feet away. It appeared, for the most part, to be perfectly normal. Just a few erratic motions every now and then…it was probably just due for a bit of maintenance.

Eclair Fisher disembarked from the bus with everyone else, her purse slung under one arm, glancing back and forth about the busy mall. It was a good day for a quick bite to eat before a little shopping. She had no engagements that day, neither in her official occupation as a freelance Physical Therapist, nor in her side job as a fencing tutor, and wasn't really upset about that. After all, it was good to get out for oneself every now and then.

Eclair stood for a moment at the bus stop, looking one way, then the other. Her shoulder length brown hair was pulled back in a loose ponytail, and her loose blue T-shirt flapped in a slight breeze. She shoved one hand into her khaki shorts and decided to head over to the taco place and eat there before heading deeper into the mall.

Samantha Branson hung the phone back on the hook. Just when it looked like she'd have a nice, quiet evening, too. She quickly grabbed her keys, and ran out the door, almost forgetting to lock it in her hurry. It wouldn't be long before she got to her destination, but some times, every second counted.

"Oh My gosh!" was all one man heard as he suddenly saw some pretty blond girl run past him in a hurry. Obviously late for some date, or there was a special on at the mall today. Kids eh?

For Rebecca Stitch the last thing on her mind was dating, as she grabbed hold of a telephone pole, spinning herself around the corner without loosing momentum and charging down the street. Combat! Again! How lucky could one girl be? Work had been overly borring today and Rebecca had a lot of pent up fun ready to be released.

She quickly mused over the fact she was being called a lot more, and how it was starting to wear her out but it didn't last long as she neared the shop.

She looked out for Samantha as she entered until a sudden realisation hit her.

"Oh HELL! I left the bath running!" She also left her door unlocked, her windows open and a pop tart in the toaster but what she didn't know...

For Renetta Evanson, the visit to the mall was one of necessity, rather than luxury. She'd been unemployed for almost a week now, and her cash was starting to run out. The fact that she'd taken the bus rather than driven herself to the mall indicated just how little she had to spare.

She'd taken care to make herself more presentable than she usually did today. Hair combed, clothes "ironed" under a pile of maps and a few books overnight. A half filled packet of cigarettes was lodged deeply into her pocket. The last job interview she'd had went downhill when she'd lit up in the middle of it.

She sighed silently to herself, wondering why he'd made such a big deal of it. Those nanobots would have gotten rid of the smoke in an hour, right?

She moved away from the crowd that'd stepped off the bus, delving into her pocket and producing one of her little tickets to heaven. She could afford a smoke before she went job hunting, and she really was dying for one.

Lighting the end of it, the drifter glanced around the mall, taking interest in the number of Boomers about. They made getting a simple job so much harder. Then again, she'd been employed half a dozen times since she first arrived here, so she wasn't complaining.

I'm GMing in a timely manner! WTF?!

As Rebecca waited for Samantha to show up, Roldo made his way behind Rebecca.

"We have a few minutes before it does anything noticable.." he said. "Which means a few minutes before the police are dispatched. I'll give Samantha a couple more minutes before sending ye out alone. In the meantime, it would probably be best to begin suiting up..."

Eclair entered the mall, passing by an information desk with another Boomer behind it. Most of the big names stores had staff the consisted almost entirely of Boomers, but the local stores that were in the mall just couldn't afford it, and many people prefered human interaction to purchasing things from boomers any day. The taco shop in the mall's food court was one of such local stores. Very little heed was paid to Renetta, though, as she hardly looked out of place...

Renetta took her time to finish smoking, settling herself into the right frame of mind. She'd need to make out that she actually cared about wherever she applied, if past experience was anything to judge by. Of course, she could luck out and find a place where they just wanted another pair of hands, which would mean she wouldn't have to bother with any sort of act.

She dropped the remains of her smoke to the ground, stepping on it as she walked off in search of employment, half keeping an ear open for any interesting conversations she could eavesdrop on as she walked.

Rebecca nodded and slapped her hands together. "Right Rolling Roldo!" she said as she set off to suit up, running her fingers across his chin before walking off. She certainly wasn't going to argue.

The skinsuit once again proved difficult to put on as she worked it onto her body in the changing room. Wait a minute? Was it refusing to go on? Had she put on weight again!? Maybe it was time to quit smoking on the job? As Rebecca was suddenly fretting the suit managed to fit perfectly fine.

Running out, not even bothering to look for Samantha, she ran to her suit. Looking over her it, she bent over, snuggled it and kissed it before slowly putting herself into the cold internal padding of the legs.

"EEEEeeeee!" she gasped out as the coldness ran through her. It wasn't long till she got used to it and waited till it was time.

Her suit was a good solid frame, made for close combat and fast movement as she had requested. They even made the shoulders "pointy" as she had wanted them to, which she was surprised at. It was mostly white, with red stripes and parts to stop it being boring. Now when was she going to get to fight?

Samantha arrived at the store a couple minutes after Rebecca, running right into the store, shouting a greeting to Roldo and Rebecca as she made her way into the changing room. The skin suit came on with a little bit of effort that she was used to putting into getting it on, and she went to get her hardsuit on.

Blue and white, her suit was made to be quick fight at close range. It also had first aid supplies for anyone injured by a Boomer, and Samantha thought it did it's job well enough. Sliding her legs into the cold interior, she thought about how she'd never get used to just how cold it really was. Leaning forward to get her arms into it, she relaxed a bit as the suit snapped shut. All she needed now was to get her helmet on and she'd be ready to roll.

Eclair looked around, seeing one or two regulars around the place, and then sauntered up to the counter. "I'll take a couple of medium tacos, one beef and one chicken, and a side order of mexican rice," she said to the guy behind the register.

She leaned against the counter while waiting for her order to be filled, and looked about the small, homey little place. The food wasn't anything to rave about, but the atmosphere was tops, which was probably why she liked eating there. It certainly wasn't because it helped her keep her figure. Part of her wondered whether it was because she prefered the human contact. Boomers weren't used very much in hospitals, so she had never really gotten used to being around the automotons, and they still made her a tad uneasy.

But they seemed to do their job well, except for on one or two occasions when they weren't maintained right, so she wasn't complaining. As long as they didn't bother her...

As Renetta finished her cigarette, she noticed that the cleaning Boomer that was taking care of the sidewalk had begun slowly making its' way towards the mall. Perhaps heading back into storage until there was another job for it...the sidewalk did look quite cleanly right now, after all.

Meanwhile, a slightly worried looking man strolled past Eclair. From her previous visits to the mall, Eclair knew him as the manager of the taco shop. Almost immediately after going behind the counter, he picked up the phone.

"Mall operations?" he said, barely audible from the distance. "Wasn't there supposed to be a cleaning Boomer in the food court by now? I can't find it anywhere, and the floor is a mess..."

Back at Roldo's store, the older man was back at his desk, punching a few of the keys on his keyboard, and putting on a small headset.

"You know the drill. Watch your batteries, finish the job as quickly as possible." Roldo said into his headset. "It's been quite some time since the police tolerated any vigilantes, after all, so it would be best to avoid any...interactions...with them."

Finishing his statement, he pressed yet another button on his console. As he did, the platforms Rebecca and Samatha were standing on dropped out from under them, and high above, the ceiling opened up. Small sparks of electricity bulged out around them, and the felt a pull downwards, as if being held in a giant rubber band, and then...snap! They sailed upward, emerging side by side from the parrallel launch tubes.

"Target is at the uptown mall." they heard inside their helmets. "By the time you get there, the chaos will have likely begun."

Rebecca let the sensation of the flight upwards take over her senses, allowing it rise through her body and pumping adreniline till she was as hyped as she could be.

"Race you there!!" She called over the Com link to Samantha as she boosted herself a little forward and making sure she landed on the top of a building first, and started taking the lead in the next jump.

"This time I'll sort the Boomer out all by myself! You'll just be cover!" She meant it too as she hurried her "flight" to the mall.

Paying the Boomer no real notice, she continued walked, glancing for any store that appeared to be hiring. She felt a twinge of worry, remembering the stories she'd been hearing about rogue Boomers and the like, but she quickly squashed it. She'd never seen one herself, and the chances were somewhere like one in a million by her reckoning.

The snapping of the 'rubber band' was another sensation Samantha figured she should have been used to by now. Rebeccas voice over the radio snapped her back to reality almost as fast as the launch tube snapped her out of the building. "This isn't any time for playing around, y'know. If this things at the mall, people could get hurt! So just work with me to take it down, and don't try to do it alone!" Samantha shook her head- Rebecca was good help and all, but she could be a bit much sometimes. Taking on a rogue Boomer on your own wasn't something you should do unless forced, or so Samanthas oppinion stated.

Eclair wasn't particularly stupid, but Boomers weren't her area of expertice. Still, she had seen a number of Boomers before, and they always seemed to do what they were supposed to, when they were supposed to. It was odd, sure, but it wasn't something she worried about. Except for the sneaking feeling she had that she had heard about something like this before...

"Whatever" Rebecca's cheery voice rang over through the radio. "Just know that this cores mine!"

She of course knew of the dangers of Boomers which is why she wanted to do this. Action, excitement, adventure. If her dream of being a hero-cop like her grand-father was falling flat on its face then she knew she could get it here.

"Crush the bad guys!" She chirped as she once again lifted herself off the top of a building, getting a little more ahead.

"...oh, so it's just returning to maintenance?" Eclair heard the manager say into the phone. "Good to hear that the other one is on it's way now...I was nervous for a second there."

The two armour-clad women were now almost within sight of the mall, with Rebecca just slightly in the lead...

Suddenly, the chilling crash of metal slamming against concrete echoed out from the entrance of the mall, followed shortly by screams of people around it. Looking at the entrance, it seemed that the greeting Boomer had seen fit to act outside of it's programming. Now a grotesque mutation of it's once female form, with the arms at least doubled in size, the Boomer had one of those arms in use holding the smashed remains of the cleaning Boomer against a wall.

Mall patrons rushed away from the monstrosity in a frenzy, and more than one had taken to their mobile phones, likely to call the police, who unlike their counterparts in Tokyo handled both human and criminal incidents. However, while no one could be certain when trying to see through the crowd, it seemed that there were still several people cowering behind the Boomer, unable to get part and join the fleeing mass...

Coming down on another rooftop, Samantha tried to hurry it up a bit. In her oppinion, they had taken too long already, and scince it was probably her fault for taking so long to get to the shop, she'd still hate to get there even a second too late. "C'mon, Rebecca, we need to move faster, we may already be too late!"

"You get the people out of there then while I deal with the Boomer!" Rebecca didn't even pause to watch the scene as she headed into battle.

As soon as she viewed she was close enough she boosted herself with more speed and went into a full head on charge. First order of business was to get the boomer to be a little less dangerous all round.

Her spinning laser blades came out and she swiped at one of the Boomers big arms, aiming for a clean full cut. It even made the whole thing easier if the thing swiped at her.

"This is....interesting, to say the least."

Ren had quickly turned her attention to the rogue boomer at sound of the cleaning bot being smashed into a pulp. She didn't run, though. She figured was far enough away at the moment to be out of any immediate danger.

Then someone in a mechanical suit had shown up and launched herself at the boomer. Her motivation to observe was doubled instantly. When she'd first heard about rogue boomers, she'd inquired further into the matter. It wasn't long before she'd heard rumors of an anit-boomer vigilante group, decking out in tech suits. Opinion on them varied, and some even thought that they were boomers themselves.

Placing a cigarette in her mouth for the second time since she arrived at the mall, she stood back and watched, her free hand resting on the pistol she kept with her at all times. Never hurt to be prepared, after all.

The blade from Rebecca's suit dug into the arm of the Boomer, making a deep, sparking gash. However, the arm stayed connected to the body, and the Boomer swatted Rebecca away with the other oversized arm. However, the abomination remained stationary, despite the fact that it didn't appear anchored down in any way. It remained there, using the damaged arm to crush the cleaning Boomer even further.

In the distance, sirens could be heard. With all the people fleeing, it seemed that someone had gotten through to the police. Still, the crowd around the exits was incredibly thick, and Eclair was having trouble getting through. The only one that was reasonably clear was also dangerously close to the Boomer...

Taking a precautionary step back, Renetta got a grip on her gun. The sight of the armored girl being batted away was not a comforting one, although she did her best to keep her cool.

Looking around, she took note of where she could run if the boomer decided she was it's next target.

First things first, Eclair thought to herself, figure out what to do if it comes your way. Exiting the mall is not an option, so where else could you bolt to?

Eclair took a quick glance around the mall in an attempt to find a route away from the Boomer that didn't involve trying to jam through an exit. She figured it was probably best to let the armor clad person take on the Boomer. After all, it looked like she at least had a vauge idea of what to do.

If there was no where viable to run towards the back of the mall, it might be better to just try and get through the exits herself...

Thinking quickly, Samantha figured the best course of action would be to distract the Boomer and allow those uninvolved to escape. Quickly looking to see if anyone was already hurt, she quickly charged the boomer, slashing at its midsection with her own blades as quickly as possible, then took a step or two back, ready for any retaliation the boomer may have.

Unread postby FlamingDeth » Sat Jul 19, 2003 12:44 am

Unfortunately, the attack didn't serve as much of a distraction. The Boomer had grown to the point that the gash of Samantha's blades seemed insignificant, and it was obvious that in order for the people behind the Boomer to escape, it would have to be somehow lured away from it's current position.

(Now I get to act like a GM, and give initiative!

1. Rebecca
2. Boomer
3. Samantha

...that was easy. People who aren't likely to be useful in combat at this point can interject as they please.)

The slugs flew towards the Boomer, one of them missing the Boomer completely, and the other exploding against its' head, taking out one of the eyes. However, the monster once again stood it's ground, whipping the mutilated cleaning Boomer around and slamming it against both of the armoured women...

Samantha tried to keep her temper as she reeled from being whacked by a boomer, and she knew she'd have nothing to gain from losing it. Quickly thinking of a quick plan, she decided that she should probably try to support Rebecca by getting the boomer into a position where it could easily be caused further harm without anyone else at risk. Again charging at the boomer, she attempted to knock one of its legs out from under it with her own, trying to send it to the ground.

"Yup, two of them. Rumor was right, I guess."

Relaxing slightly, she eased her hand off her weapon, seeing as she wouldn't need it. Despite all the hits these two were taking, they seemed to be none the worse for it. Which meant she could just stand back and enjoy the show.

Eclair grunted, wondering if either of the two fighters out there had ever studied how to properly fight with a bladed weapon. They looked kinda sloppy, in her estimation. Still, they looked like the best bet for getting rid of the rouge Boomer...

She kept edging towards the exit, just to be on the safe side, however.

While Samantha's kick didn't do much damage to the Boomer itself, it did accomplish her goal. The monstrosity stumbled forward off balance, and dropping the remains of the cleaning Boomer.

Meanwhile, all parties could hear sirens getting closer and closer, eventually screeching to a stop outside. In only a few moments, the police would be entering into the fray...

Rebecca didn't hold back a second, she launched on top of the downed boomer and, once again using her boosters, laser blades and general force, made it her mission to get to the core and shut it down.

Thankfully for her she was so into destroying the Boomer she didn't consider how icky this was about to be.

Rebecca's lack of inhibition paid off. Samantha's attack had left an opening for her, and her cutters went straight through the Boomer's back, and down through it's core. The abomination slumped to the ground, defeated. As it did so, the people behind the boomer rushed out through the exit.

Outside, the sounds of doors opening and slamming shut could be heard, accompanied by muffled voices. However, the two armoured women heard something else.

"Excellent job, ladies." Roldo's voice said through the speakers in their helmets. "Now, return to the shop before the police get in there. I don't know about these officers specifically, but some of them don't particularly like you..."

By this time, a good portion of the crowd by the exit had gotten through, and it was almost clear enough for Eclair to find her way out. However, the situation was far less dire now than it was moments ago.

Samantha nodded in agreement. She had a similar disposition of not particularly feeling like getting into a run-in with the law. Looking for the closest non-police blocked exit, she assessed what she'd have to do to get out. She looked to Rebecca to give her oppinion-

"We should try avoiding the police if at all possible, though we may have to end up going past them. If you have any bright ideas, lets hear them. Otherwise, just get ready to MOVE!"

It is a sign! A SIGN from the heavens!

Renetta chuckled to herself as she watched one of the ladies flash a victory sign. She'd expected someone from this group to be a little more mature. Or at least reserved.

She didn't move towards the exit, though. After all, she still needed to find herself a job here, and a little incident like this wasn't going to change her plans.

Rebecca looked towards where the the police were going to be at. She couldn't imagine them bringing in all of the armourary with them. Not with a "small" case like this anyway. Though the were getting a little touchy as of late.

She just pointed upwards to the sky scrappers.

"Just head up. The helicopters ain't out yet I bet so it should be plain sailing."

Eclair planted her hands on her hips and gave a snort when she saw one of the armored women give the crowed the victory salute. Someone that cocky was just asking to be taken down. Still, it wasn't her buisness, so she turned to look behind her, scoping out the shop. It seemed doubtful that she would be able to get any eating or shopping done today. She gave another, more annoyed snort at that, and threw a glance around the mall, looking for anyone who might need a hand getting out. She didn't like plying her professional trade under these circumstances, but first and formost was giving the injured a hand.

If there was anyone injured in the chaos that had just taken place, Eclair couldn't find them. It seemed that the two ladies she had taken a disdain for had gotten there before anything serious could happen. It also seemed that all the shops were closed down, and likely would be for some time, too. It looked doubtful that Renetta would be able to find gainful employment here, for now.

"You haven't much time left..." began Roldo. "...why not just leave the same way you came in?"
