Moving through the shadows, hanging back from the larger pair in front of him, Ruben scratched the back of his neck and then began patting down his pockets, as if searching for something. A few seconds later, and his questing had been rewarded with a small wooden carving, about 6" across and about 4" high. Charcoal lines burnt into the wood, detailing a kind of lizard. In a way, it seemed as if the artist had been trying not only to draw the lizard, but draw the lizard's insides, and the lizard BEFORE and the lizard AFTER, and then combined all of this into one drawing. In a way, it seemed to move.
Then it did start to move, darkness encasing the shape in Ruben's palm for a split second, glossing over the worst of the transformation. Then, stray light from one wall-mounted torch showed the result: A small, gecko-like creature, skin a mottled greeny-gray, spines travelling from the back of its neck to the tip of its tail.
Eyes large and bulbous, irises glowing a pale amber in the inky blackness, the surrounding eye totally black. It blinked once, and then clambered up Ruben's arm, harsh claws sinking into the hardy material as it came to rest upon his shoulder, and looked around with heavy lidded eyes, its expression conveying something close to mild disinterest.
GM (Gecko Message): Boss, what the hell are we doing here?
IM: You're a familiar. Your job is not to ask questions. Your job is not to question my motives. Your job is to sit there and look inconspicious. Do you get the picture?
GM: Yeah, yeah, yeah
IM: Good. And, to answer your misguided attempt at a question, we're trying to act employed. While this may seem kind of pointless to you, Awner, I, on the other hand, have to eat. Besides, I'm bored.
GM: *grumbles under breath*
Ruben backed out of the mental conversation and began to lengthen his pace a little, attempting to catch up with his colleagues who were nearing the end of the hall. The gecko, on the other hand, simply twitched its tail gently in time with its master's footsteps, eyes carefully studying every brick and tile as they passed.
