still clueless

Unread postby Mechanisto » Tue May 13, 2003 8:58 am

Silk left the tent and started walking through the streets, trying to find his living quarters. "I don't think we'll be fighting too soon, but it looks like the army is mobilizing. We could move in a week or a month, but I think when we do fight, it will be fierce."

He continued walking, his thick armored legs carrying him smoothly and slowly. For the first time, his voice showed a little bit of pride and excitement. "I will probably be one of the first into battle!"

((OOC: Christian C, are you still alive out there? Your RP craves direction! As for Ronin and plystionfn, I don't know what to say... at this point, why would your characters even trust each other at all?))

Alextina chuckled. "One thing for certain. Those first into battle are the first to never return." She poured another cup of green tea, and took a moment to observe some rather boisterous and filth ridden camp life.

"Pray to the twisted gods that you get a quiet position as an escort/hauler in a caravan. Bandits are far preferable to soldiery for slaughter." She said, not bothering with eye contact. "I think only such as I should desire the front lines: to use blood shed rather than shed blood myself."

((OOC -Right, people. The game has started again... Apparently we only have 4 people right now, could be less even... Which means... Change of scenario!))

The dawn breaks again over the tremendous area of pure evil you are all currently living in... Last day, you all received a message from your superior officer to report in at a small, rather unnoticable fort in Arikates. The fort itself, built from the black and pulsating rock of Garnishk, lies on a large pedistal in the middle of a lake with magma.

To get there you must all use one of the death gates placed everywhere. 'though equipped with interesting names, the Death Gates are usually just wooden doors you step through, often to find yourself somewhere else.

Currently, the closest death gate leading to the fort is located near the inn where you were last time.

Silk, quite amazingly, found himself getting an order to be there too, apparently there is need for a heavy fighter who's willing to take suicidial orders.

((OOC - it's a bad start, but I'm rusty))

Well...

((Ruben's a mercenary by trade, so now he's here, and he's just gotten the order.))

A stray ray of light flickered across polished steel, and the noise of a flintlock hammer being cocked permeated the still morning air. Then the tall pale man stepped out of a nearby shadow, as if spat out by the darkness, a cloak of absolute black thrown around his shoulders. His eyes hard and cold, his greying skin, rough and weathered like an ancient wooden floor.

Glancing again at the piece of paper in his hand, shaking his head in an approximation of annoyance, Rubenesque Dankemoro lifts one black-sheathed arm in a rush, blurring to straight, as a mechanical click emanates from his chest area and a long dagger shoots from out of his sleeve and into his gloved hand. Its edge is blackened to avoid tell-tale glare, and the handle is set with a chipped red gem.

Then, throwing the paper into the air with a light motion, and slashes upwards, blade blurring...the message falls towards the earth in two equal pieces. However, it never makes it to the dirt, instead flaring up into seperate balls of fire and disintergrating into ashen particles, floating away with a sudden cold gust of air.

Staring up at the darkening sky, as if trying to read his future in the formation of the clouds, Ruben comes to a decision and steps through a Death Gate, coming to stand before the magma-bordered Fort of Arikates, grinning his subtle grin up at its stone walls.

He cocks his other flintlock pistol now, and pulls a string of thin steel wire from one of the many inner pockets of his cloak, straightening it for the eighteenth time before returning it to the depths of his attire, before beginning his lonely walk towards the Fort, a black shape outlined against the foreboding sky.

Lookout behind!

Unread postby Mechanisto » Fri Jun 27, 2003 8:49 pm

Ruben felt the ground shake ever so slightly, and heard the dull thud of an armored claw etching against the rocky ground. A massive, six-legged beetle emerged from the doorway, crawling through the small frame with some impressive contortions. Soon enough, the beast's massive frame stood on solid ground, towering well overhead.

The giant armored insect was as tall as two men, and as long as a three horses, head to hind. It's entire body was a night-sky blue, and covered in plates of natural armor. it's foreward torso was vaguely humanoid, with a pair of large arms, ending in huge claws. It didnt' seem to have a neck; it's entire head and shoulders were under a thick armored carapace, with a large horn, and it's mouth and eyes were along the underside of this armored torso.

Of course the first thing Ruben noticed was the intense, eye-watering stench of decaying meat and vile chemicals that surrounded the beast. It was strong enough to knock an ordinary man unconcious.

The creature didn't even notice him, and proceded to walk towards the fort.

(Rhodia was given the message by a sergeant. Since Rhodia is currently residing in the Dark Land, he is considered a private at the moment.)

The fort, while seemingly rather impressive all around, lost a bit of it's impressiveness with the entrance, a small wooded door with the sign "Special Operatins" on it.

The unimpressive door, though, was guarded by very impressive and fine specimen of the orcish race. The two brutes, currently discussing whether or not halflings were better with beer or with butter, looked up when the two arrived. One of the orcs, slightly fatter than the other, squinted.

"Yous need permission. Show your order."

The giant insect seemed to hesitate for a moment. It then leaned foreward, and a deep gurgling sound issued from it's abdomen. It's clamp-shaped mouth opened, and a thick column of dark blue slime splashed out; it had the consistancy and thickness of mucous, and was filled with decomposing limbs and jelly-soft bones. The uncrecognizable pile of half-digested remains consisted mostly of goblins, but there were a few that resembled humans or elves. It didnt' smell like ordinary rotting flesh; it smelled of chemicals and pickled brine.

The insect started pickign through the slime-covered pile, using a pair of smaller, nimbler hands. It eventual took a message tube from it, with a hapless goblin's skeletal arm still clinging to it. The message tube, while slime-covered, seemed unharmed.

Silk held the tube towards the orcs, hoping he hadn't done something wrong. He also hoped it wasn't the wrong message tube...

Ruben watched the beetleish thing retrieve the message tube, and grimaced despite himself. Then, clicking his fingers once, the note he'd quite happily burnt to pieces before approaching the Fort began to reform itself in his palm, a fireball burning in reverse, black ash becoming stained off-white shards tinged with brown, shards becoming chunks, chunks becoming halves, and halves becoming whole.

Then, quite unfazed by the magical proceedings, he handed over the now-complete piece of paper to the nearest of the orcish pair, his other hand quite casually placed at his left hip, right next to the sawn-off flintlock tucked beneath the back of his cloak, more out of a worry that something was about to go horribly wrong, as was wont to happen with orcs no matter how relatively smart, than out of any real fear.

Korkasha, humming something cheerful and bloodthirsty and occasionally bursting into song about it, was also making her way towards the fort from one of the death gates. The bones in her hair rattled slightly before she shouted a hearty greeting to the orcs on duty, then a surprised "Heya, Silk!"

Silk flinched slightly when he heard her, and swiveled his armored head a bit to see her. He was much larger and heavier than her, but only half her height. With his head so close to the ground, he had to crane his neck just to see her knees.

That was all he needed to see to know who it was. "Uh... hi..."

He quickly lowered his head, and started slurping up the blue goop again. The ground was clear in seconds, though still sticky.

The thinner guard takes the two scrolls and look them up.

"Special Mission, huh?" He growls and spits on the ground. "Seems to be in order." He eyes the still dripping scroll. "But this I gotta report, damn bug, and you," he looks at Ruben, "good thing for you you know how to use magic, but this is going to get reported too..." He scratches his head for a moment and then notices Korkasha.

"Corporal Korkasha, you're expected." He grunts as the two opens the door. "Get in, all of you."

The giant beetle examined the small wooden door for a moment, and instead scuttled sideways, facing the fort's outer wall. It reared up onto it's hindmost four legs, and lifted it's larger forearms up. Within a few seconds, the behemoth had scaled the wall, and landed within the fort's courtyard with a thundering crash.

Silk scrambled a bit to regain his footing, his head darted left and right. He quickly followed the wall, trying to find the door that the Korkasha's had used.

Yah......

Relaxing slightly, Ruben quickly tensed again as he saw Silk scale the wall and leap over the other side. When the tremors faded, the orcs somewhat stunned by the seismic goings-on, Ruben slunk past the pair and through the door, snapping his fingers silently for a second and last time as the doors closed behind him. In his hand, another copy of the scroll appeared, minus the pyrotechnic special effects that had marked its previous arrival, a soft *POOF* and a cloud of light grey smoke the only signs of the scroll's arrival besides the scroll itself.

Running his free hand through his dusty-grey/black hair and tucking away the spare letter "just in case", Ruben noted Silk's harsh dark torso head through a particular corridor, and decided to follow.

Korkasha was quite easy to discover, due to the loud trollish warsong she was belting out.

It doubtless had much aesthetic appeal to her people, but many adjectives involved blood. And death. And carnage. And fornication.

Not to mention the actual violent contents of the song.

Silk quickly caught up with the female troll, following her scent easily. There was enough room for him inside the fort's hallways, though he just barely; his antennae touched either wall, no matter how tightly he folded them back.

He spoke to her, as low and quiet as possible, with more than a bit of nervousnes. "Where... where are we going?"

Just a little gecko...

Unread postby coyotejack » Fri Jul 04, 2003 8:21 pm

Moving through the shadows, hanging back from the larger pair in front of him, Ruben scratched the back of his neck and then began patting down his pockets, as if searching for something. A few seconds later, and his questing had been rewarded with a small wooden carving, about 6" across and about 4" high. Charcoal lines burnt into the wood, detailing a kind of lizard. In a way, it seemed as if the artist had been trying not only to draw the lizard, but draw the lizard's insides, and the lizard BEFORE and the lizard AFTER, and then combined all of this into one drawing. In a way, it seemed to move.

Then it did start to move, darkness encasing the shape in Ruben's palm for a split second, glossing over the worst of the transformation. Then, stray light from one wall-mounted torch showed the result: A small, gecko-like creature, skin a mottled greeny-gray, spines travelling from the back of its neck to the tip of its tail.

Eyes large and bulbous, irises glowing a pale amber in the inky blackness, the surrounding eye totally black. It blinked once, and then clambered up Ruben's arm, harsh claws sinking into the hardy material as it came to rest upon his shoulder, and looked around with heavy lidded eyes, its expression conveying something close to mild disinterest.

GM (Gecko Message): Boss, what the hell are we doing here?
IM: You're a familiar. Your job is not to ask questions. Your job is not to question my motives. Your job is to sit there and look inconspicious. Do you get the picture?
GM: Yeah, yeah, yeah
IM: Good. And, to answer your misguided attempt at a question, we're trying to act employed. While this may seem kind of pointless to you, Awner, I, on the other hand, have to eat. Besides, I'm bored.
GM: *grumbles under breath*

Ruben backed out of the mental conversation and began to lengthen his pace a little, attempting to catch up with his colleagues who were nearing the end of the hall. The gecko, on the other hand, simply twitched its tail gently in time with its master's footsteps, eyes carefully studying every brick and tile as they passed.

There now, let's get this going.

As the three (or four) make their way through the dark passageway in the large building they realize that the corridor is going slightly down, and it seems to go on a lot longer than the building itself. After going for a good while, the tunnel suddenly makes a sharp turn in 180 degrees. After a while the procedure is repeated. The air gets colder as they move down and the torches takes on a blueish light.

---

"So, what kind of life-threatening mission you think those fools are going to be sent at?" One of the orc guards, the fat one, says to the other.

"Hell would I know, but those fools aren't coming back alive, that's for sure."

"Yeah, they might as well rename this place "Death Hall" or something. Hur hur hur!"

"Hey, Grozk?"

"Hur hu... yeah?"

"What's that?"

"That's... that's a dragon, I think."

"Oh, that's nice... Why's it heading towards us?"

She cantered over to the fellows. "Direct me to your commanding officer." She said.

"C-C-Commanding officer?" the thinner guard stuttered.

"Direct y-y-you?" The other one murmured.

"...Oh, you must be... Alexina? The dragon?" The thin looked at her hopefully.

"That's right," The fat one seemed obviously relieved. "We heard you were in this mission too... Ehe he he..."

"It's right through this door and in through the door right in front. Can't miss it."

GM: Boss, it's freezing down here.
IM: I know. However, like the proverbial good soldier, I will march on. "I" includes "you", Awner.
GM: Awwwwww.
--

Ruben noted the change of hue in the lighting, and on instinct and also because he'd pulled that trick many a time, he suspected magical interference, which would also explain the weird proportions of this tunnel.

Shaking his head slightly, he reached into an inner pocket and retrieved a cigar. Setting it firmly between his teeth, he didn't bother to search for a light, instead simply holding one long pale finger to the tip, watching in disinterest as it began to glow red hot.

Puffing on it, he asked the simple question from between a set of gently clenched teeth.

"So. Anyone present ever make a trip down here before?"

In the ensuing silence, Ruben removed the cigar from the vicinity of his jaw and let a cloud of wafting grey smoke roll from between his lips and over his shoulder, directly into the face of the gecko, who simply inhaled the fumes as they arrived, luxuriating in the tobacco flavoured smog.

Silk continued to crawl through the subterranean hallway. There was just enough room for him to move, and he was more flexible than he appeared, making the infrequent sharp corners only a minor inconvenience.

He tried not to think too hard about where they were going... it reminded him too much of the catacombs of his homeland. he continued, keeping his thoughts to himself.

"Huh. Looks like this is all playing by ear."

Ruben removed the cigar and handed it up to the gecko who sat at his shoulder. The spiny-backed lizard puffed on it a few times, letting the core glow brilliant crimson before inhaling. It blew out a succession of miniature smoke rings, all perfectly formed, and gave the subtle impression of smiling smugly, even without the benefit of lips.

After walking for what seemed like hours, they finally arrive at a small room, decorated only by a few chairs. Sitting at a desk was a orc woman, reading through a few scribbled notes.

"I swear," she mumbled for himself, "he'd lose his job if it wasn't for me..." She looked up at the newcomers and grinned, revealing rows of sharpened teeths and tusks, "you here for your briefing? The boss'll be right with you."

Ruben looked around, the sudden amount of space almost disconcerting. Hearing the spoken words, he reflexively snapped his fingers, and the cigar-puffing gecko on his shoulder disappeared with a *poof* of escaping air and left behind only a slowly dissipating smoke ring and a small flickering sign that read, "Please call back later", a sure sign that magic had been performed, since even small amounts of magic distort the fabric of space/time and usually cause tiny temporal discontinuities. Even as he watched, the sign disappeared, as did the smoke ring, and Ruben almost self-conciously brushed off imaginary bits of lint from his gecko-shoulder, before turning and absently examining his fingernails for lack of anything better to do.

Silk arrived soon after Korkasha, his head barely fitting though the door. He slowly began stretching and contoirting, eventually filling the front of the room with his giant body. The room might have been a bit tight for Korkasha, but for the giant seige scarab, it was downright claustrophobic. He tried his best not to knock anything over; many years of slaving in the claustrophobic catacombs of his previous masters had prepared him well.

He didn't dare speak, and kept his head down in a subservient manner.
