Fort Emergence is a big place. Not big by surface standards, perhaps, but big for Exile as a whole, and Upper Exile in particular. Being the only place where the caves can be accessed without the benefit of a magical portal, it sees a great deal of traffic, whether it be merchants taking their wares into Exile, where they fetch a considerable sum, miners traveling to the surface with their loads of crystals and other precious stones, or adventurers coming and going to look for work, the flow of traffic through the small Exilian fortress is immense, and seemingly unending. However, this flow does not keep a good deal of military buisness from being carried out. One such piece of buisness, in fact, is going on right now...

In a small courtyard right beside the primary yard, an odd clump of people is forming. A mix of humans, Nephilim, and Sliths has begun to form, their voices mingling in the sounds of a dozen conversations, all fading into the background of the fort's troops finishing their morning drills.
A small, nervous looking man in an officer's clothes has just stepped to the center of the courtyard. Upon noticing him, a few people fall silent, then a few more, and finally the courtyard is as quiet as it can be, with all the background noise from out in the main courtyard. The man waits a moment more, to make sure he has everyone's attention, then begins to speak.
"Hello, all. I'm sure some of you know me, but let me introduce myself anyway. I am Aniximander, the officer in charge of the Fort Emergence branch of Unspecified Services. You all have most likely come here looking for work as mercenaries, adventurers, profesional treasure hunters, or whatever it is you like to call yourselves. First, I want to say: Welcome to the Fort. We will try our best to satisfy your desire for swashbuckling. Second, there is more than enough work to go around, so please don't fight over jobs. I assure you that there is enough heroic deeds needing doing for you all to manage to get one or two to yourselves. I believe that is all, the seargents have the particular assignments," here Aniximander indicated a quartet of men, all in armor that bore the blue portal crest of Exile, "please see them if you wish to undertake some quest or another."
The man turned to leave, only to stop as a page approached handed him a scroll. "Eh?" He grunted as he read what was written on the parchment. The crowd of adventurers waited as he read it, then caught their breath as he turned back to address the crowd once more. Unfortunately, what he said did not concern most of them.
"Would the adventurers Jason Miller, Angel Weisenger, Elena Grey, Keldorn Stevenson, Carlae Hauthner, and Genji please report to my office. The page," he indicated the boy who had given him the scroll, "Will escort you there once you are all together. That is all."
This said, the small man walked off into a small side tunnle into the innards of the Fort, leaving the crowd wondering why those six adventurers in particular had been called together. At the front of the courtyard, the page stood waiting for the adventurers to gather together...

((Bleh. Not the most inspired of openings. BUT, go ahead and introduce your characters, and stuff, then we'll get moving. There will be a chance for your characters to get aquainted, but I want to get things moving first.))

The large man who was Keldorn looked up from the decidedly smaller man he was holding by the collar. Roughly letting him go, he looked him square in the eye.

"If I ever catch you trying to take my stuff again...POW!" *punches his fist into his hand for added emphasis* "Get outta here."

Now, to go and find out why I've been singled out like that...

With that thought, he made his way up to the front of the crowd, where the page was waiting, checking his pack and fixing his hammers to his belt.

After the silence had left and the noise began again Jason started for the page when he noticed a little tug on his pouch. He whipped out his Dikatana and gently rested the tip on a theif's nose, a drop of blood trickled down his face.

"And what might you be doing friend?" The man took a step back.

"Ahh, nothing nothing, I was just on my way out." The man nearly knocked over another traveling merchant as he scrambled away.

No to find out about this...

"FINALLY."

Elena huffed, arms crossed. She wasn't quite in the mood to go pull some crazy stunt, but it was her master's orders. Besides, it's much better since she wasn't even allowed to speak in that damned tower. And maybe she'd get to prove what she said... Or maybe she wasn't ready yet? In any case, if she can't do this job, nobody can.

She walked up to the page...

"I'm Elena." she said, quick and to the point...

Angel walked up to the page and examined his tatters, he wasn't much to look at. The page tried to keep his posture at attention but was obviously not the military type.

"The names Angel." Angel said stretching out his hand in greeting towards teh page.

The page decided to give up his stance and held out his hand, grasping Angel's, and they shook profesionally. Angel put his hand back at his said and tryed to start a conversation with the man.

"So what's your name?" Angel said trying to probe for information of why they got called together.

"the names Jecarie." the page said cautious towards Angel's curiousity. "havn't met someone who actually asked my name in...a long time."

"well you seem to a nice guy." Angel said trying to get the page to treat him as a friend or at least friendly aquentince.

"Yeah well others could disagree..." The Page said trailing off slightly but caught himslef and stood back at attention. "Is everyone here?"

"damn..." Angel thought to himself, realizing he messed up. "awell, i'll figure out when we get there."

Carlae's face pretty face contorted into a slightly comical and infinitely cute frown.

Odd... I wonder what this could be about. No way to find out but to go and see, I guess

She made her way to the page's side and smiled at him.

'I'm Carlae.'

((OOC: Not one day into the RP and Nick is already falling behind. Not promissing... but we shall press on. Nick, I'm gonna move the rest of the party on, but leave you a chance to catch up.
ALSO: PSL, I'm willing to overlook your indiscretion with the NPC this time. But do it again, and I will become disagreeable.
Finally, this mission may seem strange, but it is actually a common practice within the Exilian ranks to send messages, no matter how urgent, through adventurers.
OK, we all clear? Then let's move on.))

The page looked over the five that had assembled, then at a piece of paper in his hands. "Well, most of you are here, and we were informed that it was possible Genji could be running behind due to circumstances on the surface. I'll take you to Aniximander and begin your breifing. He'll be filled in when he arrives."
With that, the group of five people was led into the halls of Fort Emergence. A few minutes, and two barracks full of soldiers later, they found themselves in a small, messy, and very cramped office. Sitting on something (possibly a chair, it was impossible to tell in the cramped area) on the other side of the desk was Aniximander. When seen this closely, it became even more clear that he was full of nervous energy, so much so that he seemed to be nearly shaking in his seat.
He immidiately sprang to his feet and shook each of their hands, moving quickly about the group with sudden, abrupt movements.
"Yes, yes, let me welcome you all again. I am Aniximander- but you know all that already. Please, have a seat."
Whatever seats the man was refering to, however, was a mystery to his five guests, as there were no chairs to be seen in amongst the chaos of his office. Aniximander, however, did not seem to notice.
"You're probably wondering why you have all been called here," Aniximander sat back down behind his desk. "Well, the reason is simple. The six of you, or rather the five of you, as your final member has been detained on the surface, but will hopefully be joining us soon, the five of you then, have been chosen to act as a special currior group between here and the Imperial City of Moon."
Aniximander rummaged through the mound of papers and packets that was his desk, and eventually produced a packet, and an official looking pendant. "This," he held up the packet, "is a message for the mage Solberg, who, I'm sure you know, is the senior member of the Triad. It's imperative that it reach him as soon as possible, within the next thirty six hours if possible. In order to get it too him within that time frame, it is necessary for us to take somewhat drastic measures."
Aniximander placed a map on his desk. It depicted the mountain range outside of the Fort on the surface. "Here, you can clearly see the exit of the Fort. Right next to it is a mountain pass. Our intelligence indicates that it is still open. Go through it, and head north west. About eight miles outside of the pass, you should find a small hut. In it lives Ernest the mage, an expert on teleportation. Show him this amulet," Aniximander hefted the pendant he had produced before, "and tell him you want to go to Moon. Follow the directions he gives you."
With this, he looked up. "Understand that the mountain pass you will be heading through is riddled with unicorns. Nasty, preaditory creatures that have taken to attacking anyone who passes through. Also, Ernest's hut is right in the center of Giant Lizard territory. There's a good chance you will get attacked along the way.
"There's also a good chance that Ernest is dead. No one's heard from him in months. In the event that you arrive at his hut and find that he's dead..." Aniximander proceeded to lay out the quickest rout from Ernest's hut to Moon. He then folded the map and placed it on his desk. "You're free to take the map and any food supplies you think you'll need from the kitchens. We hope that your final team mate will be arriving soon. But if he doesn't show in two hours, we want you to leave anyway. If he arrives before then, please depart as soon as possible after he does so.
"Any questions?"
Aniximander looked up from his desk at the five adventurers who had waited quietly as he laid out the job before them in a no-nonsense way. While he might be small and hyperactive, once he started talking, there was no doubt that he was fully in charge.

Aniximander held up a Golden Crest, the currency of both Exile and the Empire. One side was clearly emblazoned the portal insignia of Exile, on the other, the four pointed crown of the Empire. With a casual motion he flipped the coin, then caught it again. "Six thousand Crests, paid on successful delivery of the message within thirty six hours. Four thousand if you can't make it in that amount of time."

Carlae's eyes lit up at the thought of what she could do to help the masses with that sort of money.

'I'll help.' She said quietly as images of hospices materialised in her mind.

She made no offer to hold the amulet or the package; the right to carry them was clearly not an important issue to her.

Whaaaaa-AAAAAAAAAAAT?!?

Those were Elena's first thoughts as he started talking. Whoever made this joke, it was quite a bad one. WHAT DO THEY MEAN COURIER?! Did she look like a messenger? She had better things to do then- ... wait... Did he say Solberg? Did he really say Solberg? Elena thought that that may yet be useful...

"Okay." She said, again to the point.

Besides... six thousand crests would allow her to buy a few magical scrolls and spellbooks, and then, she may finally be well on her way to returning to what she once was... (or thought she once was.)

(OOC: Random note. It's Exile. Exile people are called Exiles, and Exile's stuff are called Exile towns, Exile people, Exile warriors, etc. Took this from EII, I did.)
"How long do you think you guys would take to prepare yourself?" she asked the others..

Aniximander, gathering that the party had agreed to take the mission, simply placed the packet and the amulet, along with the folded map, on the desk in front of them. "Whenever you are ready," he said, "you make take the message and go. How long you wait for your sixth member is up to you, but as I said before, we would like it if you could leave within the next two hours. You may or may not encounter Genji on the road out. He's a Nephilim from the surface, who recently came to one of our agents interested in work. If you do run into him, be sure to fill him in on the details."
Aniximander reached for another pile of papers and began sorting through them, keeping one eye on the adventurers in his office in case they had any more questions.

Keldron, after getting a few directions, soon found the kitchens near the main entrance between the Fort and Upper Exile. After explaining his purpose, he was easily allowed in. One of the cooks approached, several packs of rations in a bag slung over one shoulder.
"Well, laddie," she greeted him. "Hear you're going on a currior mission to the surface." She deposited the bag on the counter between herself and Keldron with a clunk. At her words, one of the soldiers who was passing through the room stopped and looked over for a moment. He seemed to size Keldron up for a moment, then continued on through the room. He was clearly visible outside, taking up a guard post at the gates to the Fort.

Angel snatched up the jewel and placed it in his bag, the jewel was so beutifull...

Deciding that it would be best kept there, Angel placed teh bag on an inside pocket of his robe, he just needed to remember to keep the robe from falling to teh ground, any theives might notice the weight.

"I'll go wait near the entrance." Angel said, since he didn't have anything to really do. "Although it would be nice if someone came with me, always good to travel in groups."

Angel walked out the door, not expecting anyone to follow, considering they all had seperate things to do, he saw the page who smilied and waved to him.

Angel nodded and continued down the hallway till he got out into the courtyard and from there, walked towards the entrance.

A thief leaned up against the wall and was eyeing up the peopel walking in and out of the fort to see any potential targets, he had a small cut on his nose that didn't look to old.

Angel walked up and leaned on the wall next to him, making the theif jump, not anticapating such a surprise.

"Oh..." the theif said trying to regain himself, " I didn't see you walk into my shadow there."

"your too obvious here, the guards are starting to get suspicious, they were talking about coming over here and questioning you, and by the looks of those gold filled pockets, it'll be hard to convince them otherwise." Angel said crossing his arms over his chest.

"Really? thanks for the tip." The theif said leaning off of teh wall and getting ready to walk away.

Angel grabbed the theives arm, "give it back," Angel said holding out his other hand.

The theif placed what few coins angel had in his hand and tryed to walk away again, but Angel still held on tight.

"And..." Angel said still holding out his hand.

The theif sighed and gave Angel the bag with the amulet in it.

"keep the rest." Angel said letting go of the theif, the theif running off quickly.

"heh, he fell for it." Angel said as he looked towards the guards who weren't discussing the theif but rather what they were gonna have for dinner. "One less theif at this entrance."

(I note that PSL still isn't paying attention. Stop controlling the NPCs, that's the GM's job. Also, it's Keldorn, not Keldron.)

Turning to Elena as he walked, Keldorn answered:

"Well...we've got the trip there, which is a day and a half, and the trip back, which could prove longer, if we're to be teleported there. So that's at least three days right there, barring any delays. So probably about four or five days worth of food should be good, I'd say...And I'll carry it, so don't worry about the weight of it all. Not like I'm not used to lugging heavy things around anyway. *shrugs*"

He thanked the cook, and moved what he figured was five days of rations into his backpack.

As Keldorn began to shoulder his pack, now containing the rations for a five day trip, he noticed that the guards were whispering back and forth, the one who had been through earlier talking with the other three at the gate. He pointed in Keldorn's direction, then made a few more statements, a worried look on his face.

[OOC: Good morning. My computer's been broken, so I owe you all the dearest of apoligies. All I can say is that from what I've read, you've all had a good chance to interact with each other, so maybe it was for the best.]

Outside, things were getting a bit rough. A very large, very violent Nephillim was wandering aimlessly toward Fort Emergence, and anyone that got in his way was either flung aside or... flung aside.

"Rrrr... wicked tribals... thinkin' dey can just order Genji around like a dog! I'll show dem! Les'see how dey act when one of der best hunters abandons the clan! Maybe dey understand how important Genji truly is."

Of course, this was common talk for Genji. He had never been formally taught, and so he had no knowledge of reading or writing. As his name was Genji, that was what he referred to himself as. Simple, no?

He had been raised to hunt - a Nephillim warrior that represented everything his people stood for. He was a dark-skinned gentleman with a bulky, muscular physique, and a towering stature of almost seven feet. His hands were scarred and bloody from a lifetime of killing and gutting animals in the wild, along with building homes and other such activites. Two small, egg-shaped eyes glared out from above a large, flaring nose and a set of jagged teeth. Indeed a menacing character.

"Hurrr... Genji thought he told someone Genji was comin' here. But where's de welcoming committee? All Genji sees is a bunch of tiny men..."

Genji stood in the middle of Fort Emergence, scratching his head.

Genji was greeted by a pair of human guards, led by a Nephilim of stature almost as great as that of the tribal hunter. Taking him in at a glance, the cat-like soldier asked a simple question. "You Genji?"

Uppon recieving an affermative, the Nephilim soldier proceeded to explain the mission and it's details to Genji. Once that was completed, he pointed to Angel, who was standing nearby, and said, "Now that you're here, it's best you set out for your destination as soon as possible."

"Well... I don't know if you realized this, but Unspecified Services isn't in the habit of just throwing together a bunch of mercinaries that have never worked together..."
The guard looked around carefully, as if to check to see if he would be overheard. His buddies were all noticably busy, all of the sudden. "Look, I'm not sure if I should tell you this," he leaned in closer, "but I hear there was actually a significant amount of effort put into choosing the members of your party. I don't know exactly what that implies, but I do know the only other time that a group of adventurers has been hand picked for a mission was during the plauges of monsters. You should be careful, with-"

The guard was cut off by the sudden arrival of a large Nephilim, who's brazen entrance through the other gate, from the direction of the surface, created considerable excitement among the guards at that end of the fort.

Once things settled down, the Nephilim was approached by a trio of Exile soldiers. A few words of the ensuing conversation could be heard drifting over to where Keldorn and the others stood. The word 'Genji' could be heard among the words spoke.

"I could be mistaken," one of the other guards butted in, "but I believe that's your other team member. I heard one of yours was running late."

Unread postby Nick Shogun » Fri Jan 24, 2003 2:14 am

Genji looked solemnly at Jason and Angel. "Mm... t'would be best for you to mind your own businesses, tiny men. Genji don't need nobody weighting him down."

The mammoth Nephillim brushed past Angel, his girth bumping Jason off-balance. He moved to the nearest chair and sat down. Angel could see the wood strain to support Genji's weight.

"Genji just be here because dey told Genji dere would be a big cash payoff for anyone willin' to do dis task. And Genji's no weaklin'. I been slaying lizards and such since I was ah babe."

Jason unsheathed his Dikatana, walked up to Genji and silently cut a leg off of the chair. Jason stood there and started at the Nephillim.
