With A Bang (Semi-Open Elemaer Board CI)

Unread postby Spleen » Thu May 03, 2007 6:32 pm

(OOC: This is a CIRP set in the world of Elemaer. It’s “semi-open” because characters must be approved before they can be used, but new players can join at any time. The Wiki is a good place to post new characters to show me; new posters without Wiki access would be better off using the Elemaer Character Thread, viewtopic.php?t=1115. There’s a lot of Elemaer setting information on this page, http://mysidia.org/rpgww/Spleen_Jots_Down_Elemaer_Notes, but it’s poorly organized and incomplete right now. My screenname on AIM is DeusFio if you have any questions.)

The sun dipped lower and lower in the sky over the city of As’nar on the last day of the year 973, also the last day of winter - a mild winter, fitting As’nar’s warm climate, but a winter nonetheless. One could hardly believe it was still winter (or could ever be winter) on such a perfect day as this; only a few wisps of clouds traveled lazily across the sky, helped along by a light, warm breeze blowing in from the south. The night would be beautiful, as well, the sort of night that required neither a jacket to keep warm nor a fan to keep cool. This was fortunate, of course; most everyone could remember New Year’s Eves in past years where it went heavily one way or the other and everyone sought a temperate middle ground.

The city was festooned by the public themselves, as it was every year. Colorful bunting was in evidence, flags and pennants and streamers flew from all over the city, and whatever light sources could be were stood in windows. The lights were off for now, but in many a home a match was already ferreted out in preparation for sundown, a scant hour or two away. The traditional festivities were in evidence this year, as they were every year. In the Public Orchards in the Southplains district, amid the fragrant smells of the johdr fruit blossoms and the lights of carefully-placed festive lanterns, a few orchestras in the classical style were preparing to play through the first several hours of the night for the cultured, who traditionally trotted out their finest wines for sampling on this occasion. Bands would also be playing in the Fountain Square in central As’nar, overlooking the Edo River; these were the more popular, modern type of band, and space was cleared for a dance floor of sorts, although “dancing” to the music popular was more a matter of bobbing one’s head in time to the complicated percussive beats. The parade down the major thoroughfares of As’nar was almost complete, most of the horse-drawn floats already in the process of being dismantled and half the marching bands sent home.

In addition to those festivities, of course, the people of Elemaer, especially those in As’nar, played out a yearly ritual of slowly increasing inebriation. Legend - not respectable legend, of course, possibly something between an urban myth and a fairy tale - had it that if you could drink in a serious fashion until sunup on New Year’s Day (which, according to the official calendar, was actually when the year changed) and still acknowledge the sun’s existence, you would be granted one wish (and a headache). On New Year’s, bars stayed open so late that many just didn’t bother to close before the next day’s drinkers.

For a certain Pyral of the Order of Fire, this last tradition had been adopted as his own, and had served him well since he was a Flambar and discovered alcohol. However, Telerak Zekail wouldn’t be drinking with the boys tonight. Unless his date wanted to come with, that is, and until extremely recently he’d have lumped her in with “the boys” as a matter of course anyway.

His date.

He’d asked Tur’nasus Jaksur on a date on something between a dare and a show of good faith. The agreement was part and parcel of a plan Telerak and Tur had had to set up their friend Keliel Kartoff with an eligible lady from Tur’s Order of Air. Keliel wouldn’t go for it unless Telerak could prove that he could go on a real date with a real girl of substance; it just so happened he could only actually name one, and he was scared to death of the entire arrangement. He didn’t know what it was that caused it, but he was always more comfortable - vastly more comfortable, even - dealing with women (in romantic situations, at least) who were demonstrably less capable than he, unaffiliated with any Order and often not terribly bright, either. Kel and Tur got on his case constantly about it, almost as much as Telerak got on Keliel’s case for being a crazy hermit. Thus, young Flambar Keliel would be escorting the (by Tur’s description) “very cute” Arenda Nialin, in clothes that Telerak had borrowed for him from the similarly-built Jagen Turlis, to whom Tel now owed a drink. They would be picking Arenda and Tur’nasus up for their double date right around sundown; an hour and a half away (including fifteen or twenty minutes’ travel time) and Telerak was already getting a little queasy, nervous twisting feeling in the pit of his stomach. He could lead men into battle against the creations of a dark, depraved god with a grin on his face and a song in praise of Krad on his lips, but somehow the simple act of spending time with a girl of Tur’s caliber on anything like a date froze his guts.

Telerak rooted through the small corner of his already small closet that he devoted to “normal people” clothes, pushing aside outfits in the Order of Fire colors - red, orange, and yellow (he wasn’t part of an imaginative organization) - that were the official-unofficial uniform of the Order. Street clothes, layman’s clothes, whatever you called the clothes in the back of the closet, they were in subdued colors, provided no protection, and (this was the important part) would not scream “Kradite”. It was tradition for members of the Orders to at least dress the part of a regular person on New Year’s Eve, hence the loaner clothes Jagen had provided for Keliel (who probably slept in Order of Fire reds, Telerak mused, and maybe even armor). He eventually found the clothes he wanted: A fitted, long-sleeved black shirt that would show his Krad-given musculature to its full, impressive extent; a light vest in a medium gray, because vests were in style; loose fitting pants that matched the vest. He combined this decidedly normal ensemble with a leather belt (onto which his coin-purse was tied) and his most comfortable pair of combat boots and tucked his gold and ruby lion’s head amulet (a gift from his mentor for becoming a Flame Warrior) into his shirt, reasoning that one didn’t need to be in an Order to be religious. He scooped a thick cream from a jar on his washbasin into his hands and spread it into his hair, holding it spiked in his customary style, then picked up a few short lengths of gold-colored wire off and twisted them around the spikes.

Dressed, Telerak left his room and ascended the stairs up to the floor of the Temple of Fire where the communal Flambar dorms were, seeking out his young protégé. “Keliel? You in here?” he called, poking his head in the door.

In the city of As'nar, Elemaerans throw themselves into New Year's celebrations with wholehearted enthusiasm. Joy, a new year comes! Let us gather our friends and eat good food, shirk responsibilities and get drunk!

Not a few of the city's younger citizens can be seen out past their usual hours, variously with and without their elders' blessings. There was simply too much celebrating to do tonight to keep track of all those kids. The problem will take care of itself in the morning, after hangovers.

In Fountain Square, one of these kids was sitting down--next to a fountain, of all things!--listening to the bands and watching the people pass by with wide eyes. The blonde boy, dressed in the clothing of a water initiate, nursed a mug of hot chocolate, enjoying the celebrations.

Unbeknownst to the young lad, he was being watched. Fortunately for him the eyes were friendly ones; As'nar was not a city known for its nighttime safety, after all, especially with an increasing number of its inhabitants succumbing to alcohol's effects in deference to the New Year.

"Hello there," a female voice said from behind him. "Shouldn't you be getting on back to your temple soon? The sun's gonna be down, and I think that's your Order's Initiate curfew, isn't it? I'm surprised they let you out to begin with."

Were the boy to turn around, he'd see a woman in her mid-twenties leaning on the fountain. She would be tallish for a woman (although from his perspective, adults probably seemed pretty tall on a usual basis), with a pretty face (currently sporting an amused smile), large blue eyes, and shiny blond hair tucked into a ponytail. She would be dressed casually, with a plain white shirt under a tan leather jacket along with a pair of khaki pants and low-heeled brown leather boots. No jewelry, not so odd at a concert, especially at night, and no makeup either.

Ahh, another night with Telerak, Tur mused to herself as she picked some clothes from her closet. The closet was packed to the seams with clothes, and she was having trouble finding something to where, something that plagued many girls on the verge of a date. She wanted to look nice, but not too nice. She didn't want Tel to think she liked him or anything. Just friends. She pulled out a nice looking white blouse, frilly and pretty, but not too fancy or showy. She then chose a nice solid sky blue skirt, about knee length, to go with her shirt. She didn't intend for the colors to be her order colors, so to throw that off, she put on a thick black belt. She then hastily donned as much non-makeup as she could. non-makeup being the sort of eye shadow and blush that girls wear when they're trying not to make it look like they're applying make-up. She touched up a little bit here and there, letting her hair out of the ponytail she'd put it in after her shower and speaking a quick incantation to dry it out before grabbing her bag and walking out the door. She then walked back in, put on a pair of black inch-high boots and put out the lights. Yeah, not nervous at all.

When she left her room, she found th hallway devoid of any people except for the occasional person bustling towards the stairs to head down to the festivities. She should have been out there as well, though she now had to go find Arenda. The young girl was probably still in her room getting dressed or something. She was a good girl, but sometimes a little slow. She stepped onto the level of the tower that housed the Gustohrans and found Arenda's room. She rapped on it, waiting for a reply.

(OOC: I didn't realize how young Arenda was...)

Said young lad leaned backwards, arcing his back and turning his head upside down so as to get a look at the woman addressing him. "Hullo, ma'am." He blinked as his eyes began to cross slightly, doing his best to ignore the blood rushing to his head. "Hey, we both have blond hair!"

Giving up the battle against gravity, the initiate sat up and turned around. "I'm doing extra chores for tonight," he explained. It was the truth; specifically, he was picking up the chores of other mages in exchange for the few ethas he had to spend tonight. It might be even more true later, should his absence be missed during the evening. "The fountains are really pretty at night. They'll light up soon, won't they?"

The woman laughed and walked the rest of the way around to sit next to the young boy, looking at the other three fountains set around the plaza, centered on the large one in the center. "Yeah, they'll light up once an Order of Light mage comes to cast the spell. I think it's a spell, anyway; the fountains might just be magical and they have to turn the magic on. I'm not good with spells and whatever, so I don't really know the difference." She looked at the boy out of the corner of his eye, only pretending to buy his story. Takes a rebel to know a rebel, she thought with a private little grin. "What's your name, little guy? I'm Draea."

Arenda had been nervous all day, from the very moment she had woken up. She might have stayed in bed that morning on account of those nerves, but she had to get up and take care of the day's work quota early so that she would have time for her date that night. Fortunately, she had been able to land an indoor job that day so that she wouldn't have to travel all the way to the Public Orchard and back. Unfortunately, that job had been guard duty, so she had to wear her armor to it.

Right now, she was glad her armor was leather and not metal. While it didn't afford the best protection, and she had already received a few injuries in her time of field-service because of that, it was a lot easier to put on and take back off. It still took its share of time, though, having a number of inconvenient straps to manage.

She had only gotten back in from her final patrol a few minutes ago. She had spent most of the time since then getting out of the armor, and the rest trying to decide on her clothes. Currently she was still wearing only the cloth undergarb that kept her armor from chafing her skin, and that was hardly an appropriate thing to wear on a date. Tur had an advantage over Arenda in the task of picking out an outfit: Tur was only going out with her date as a friend, while Arenda actually needed to make an impression. Arenda needed an outfit that wasn’t too conservative, but wasn’t too revealing either.

Arenda was deep in her closet when she heard the knock on her door. Surprised by the sound, thinking that she had lost track of time, she flew into a panic. Turning around, she grabbed at the nearest shirt and tried to rush back out of the closet. Sadly, the shirt didn’t let go of the hanger as easily as she had expected, and so the bar the hanger was on to pulled out of its socket. The bar, in turn, knocked into one of the shelves at the top of the closet.

Outside the door, Tur would have heard a series of loud crashes as the chain reaction continued. This clatter was followed by several seconds of silence.

“… It’s not locked,” Arenda’s muffled voice finally called. “Do come in.”

Tur poked her head in, looking around. "You alright," she asked, voicing concern for her young friend. She stepped inside and closed the door, moving her head about looking for some sign of the young Gustohran. When she looked inside her closte she saw he ron the floor with a rather large mess on her hands.

"Nervous?" Tur asked as she helped her to pick up the clothes from the floor. She then noticed that she wasn't anywhere near dressed and looked at her quizzically. "Well, I doubt Keliel will mind you in your undergarments, but I suggest you leave that until at least the fourth or fifth date, if at all."

Draea laughed. "Trust me, Zeph, there's no part of me trying to play music that would end well for anyone here. Why do you think my name's weird?"

Zeph paused before responding. "Cus I'm not used to it, I guess. It won't be weird tomorrow or the day after, I bet.

"You kinda look like a musician, you know. Maybe a drummer or singer. That's why I asked."

Draea laughed again. "I'm flattered that you think so, but honestly I don't have rhythm and I don't have a voice anyone would want to listen to. I'm tone deaf; it comes from my father's side." A momentary look of sadness crossed her face as she remembered something she didn't like to think about, but she forcibly replaced it with the smile she had been wearing before before changing the subject. "So, Zeph, do you know any of these bands? I have a friend who's one of the drummers in the band that played before this one. He's really good."

"They're bangs and tings," Zephin explained helpfully, pointing to a nearby band with predominant percussion, "and he's strings," he pointed to a lone musician with a violin and a hat upturned for money. He looked at Draea with a serious expression, something that obviously took some effort and therefore took on something of a comical tone. "You feel bad to your stomach? We should get some food, I'm all out of chocolate anyway." He patted her arm, a gesture learned from somewhere or another, and jumped up. "Unless you're dizzy, then you should probably stay sitting." He pondered this thought, ponderously.

Draea smiled, noting the boy's concern. "I'm not sick or anything, just thinking about something that made me sad. I'd love to split one of those little cream-filled chocolate cakes I saw someone peddling before with you, though. I was gonna buy one but they're too big and rich for me." Draea knew enough about being young and breaking rules not to bother offering Zeph anything with more than incidental traces of protein or any food resembling a good source of dietary fiber.

Arenda smiled sheepishly at Tur's comment as she hung her clothes back up where they belonged.

"I just got in from patrols," she explained herself. "I haven't been able to decide what I want to wear yet, either..."

As she spoke, she felt her nerves building up again.

"Hey, I bet you've been on a lot of dates," she told Tur. "Maybe you could help me out."

"Help you out? Well, let's see what you've got in here," Tur said as she rummaged through the clothes on the rack. "The key is to not look like you're dressing up for the date, but at the same time wanting to dazzle the guy with a nice outift." She then stopped and thought about what she'd said and shook her head, "On second thought, dazzle may not be the right thing to do. You might dazzle Keliel into setting the tableloth on fire or something." She then rummaged some more through the clothes and picked out a few articles of clothing. "Here, try these on and see what you think. Afterwards I'll help you with your makeup and stuff."

Kel mad! Kel smash!

Unread postby The Dark Gun » Sun May 13, 2007 10:22 pm

Telerak arrived just in time to hear the end of some spell or another, followed by a rather dramatic burst of heat and a faint smell of burnt feathers and a slight touch of cloth. If he had heard the incantation correctly, it seemed that Keliel had managed to execute a rather fast, clean burn of his bedding. Tel could hear him muttering angrily, and he did not seem to notice the Pyral approach.

Telerak declined to comment on Keliel setting yet another inanimate object on fire (though anything animate he tended to get upset over), merely crossing to the windows on two of the walls (Thank Krad this room is sitting at a corner, he thought) and opening them so the smoke and the smell of burnt feathers could dissipate. He turned to his younger friend. "You ready, killer? Tonight's the big night."

Keliel's face is twisted in frustration as he turns to looks at Telerak. For a moment it seems as though the air around him is on fire, as though he was wreathed in an aura of flames, hot and furious, though over his left hand they seemed... Blurred slightly, out of synch with the rest, cooler... The impression vanishes after a moment, leaving a scowling Keliel standing in his space, considering the efficiently burned, slight ash remains of his mattress.

"This morning bodes poorly."

He spoke acidly.

Telerak kicked the bed-frame with his boot to make sure it was still properly intact, and then stood with a foot propped up on it, arms folded at the elbows over his bent knee. "How's that?" he asked, the darker side of his friend's nature being quite familiar to him.

"EVERYTHING has gone wrong this morning. Everything. Oh, except burning that. That worked fine."

He sighed, gesturing at the completely stable frame and the now absent mattress.

Telerak just smiled his amused half-smile as he was wont to do when dealing with Keliel's more frustrating moods. "It's a self-fulfilling prophecy if you decide the rest of the night's gonna go as poorly. Chin up, you'll be okay. Where are those clothes that Turlis lent you?"

"Those? Oh, I was keeping them safe in here..."

He opened a small chest he kept. Folded, carefully placed on top of the books and scrolls, and kept seperate from the few sharp objects contained within was the clothing.

"Good thing I didn't leave them on the bed as others are so wont to do..."

Telerak laughed. "Boyo, when do you do anything other people do? Sometimes I think you actively try to be weirder than everyone else around you. Ain't the definition of healthy, bro. Now put on those clothes. You can stick with combat boots, though, they're in style. There's a band that's pretty popular right now that's got a steel drummer who goes around in plate boots, if you can believe something that absurd. I don't even wear plate boots when I'm wearing plate." Tel was clearly prattling, which would be standard Telerak in any case but was made worse by his uncertainty about the night. At least there's gonna be sort of a buffer between me and Tur, he thought, not like our first date. The last phrase was spoken in his mind much like a vengeful curse would be. The other date, two days ago, had been a necessity in Keliel's eyes; Telerak still wasn't entirely sure why he went along with it. It had gone well, considering Telerak started the night almost preferring to have his sword arm amputated, but Telerak knew that if Tur wasn't already his friend, she'd have said "no" to the second. Hell, she probably would have anyway if the second didn't serve the purposes of their plot to get Keliel into normal human social interaction.

The scariest thought to Telerak was the possibility that this last thought was completely false, and that she liked him enough to want to date him under any circumstance. Such thoughts were worse than unproductive, so he pushed them out of his head.

"I don't need to think of ways to do things stranger than everyone else. I just need to find an effecient and practicle way to deal with things, and I'm garunteed to seem a bit odd."

He turned away from Telerak, and after a few moments of work removed the claw that was on his left hand, setting it on the edge of his bedframe, with his right hand, keeping his left on the other side of his body before working to rebind it. He stretched the fingers a little.

"Hrm, it seems this length is just a touch loose without the claw in place... Then I'll need to..."

He switches where its tied, tightening a little.

"That's better..."

He mutters.

"Wouldn't you be better off with a glove or a strip of gauze or something?" Telerak asked. He didn't try and get a look at Keliel's bared left hand out of respect for his friend, even though he had been morbidly fascinated by what was to be seen under there since he had known the young mage. He did, however, happen to notice his own boots, and how well-worn they were, eliciting the thought: I bet none of the fashionable folks who are going to be wearing these has ever worn them hiking in the Kal'inurs to look for demons. It filled him with satisfaction.

"I'm already going to be wearing a strange suit of clothing, I can manage at least one, somewhat familiar comfort."

Keliel said flatly.

"And I hate trying to get something new fitted comfortable to this hand."

Arenda accepted the clothes from Tur and proceeded to put them on. Once she had them on, she looked in the mirror.

"Oh, right. I've got some new shoes I've just got to wear," she suddenly said.

Running back to her closet, she rummaged through and pulled out a pair of plate boots, just like the drummer of her favorite band wore. She sat down on her bed and put the boots on, then looked back in the mirror again. A second later, though, her face turned disappointed.

"This shirt... doesn't really go with these shoes, does it?" she asked.

"Your choice," Telerak said. "Now come on and get dressed, you're gonna make us late and then I'm going to have to kill you. Be glad I'm not going to try and screw around with what passes for hair on your head."

"How cute," she said as she saw Arenda fish a pair of boots out of her closet. She had actually seen a pair very much like it the other day, but had decided to save her money for other indulgences. Still, she was quite envious that Arenda had such a cute looking pair of boots.

Once she put them one, though, Tur'nasus looked at Arenda and shook her head as she asked her question. "Nope, not really..." She then went back into her closet and rummaged about looking for something else that would look better.

"I don't think there's anything here that'll go with those shoes," she said as she continued to rummage through the clothes. There were a few very nice pieces of clothing, but nothing that went well with the boots. "Why don't you come and help out."

"Fine, fine... Go... Look somewhere else and I'll get to it. Hard to change into new clothes with some big lug crowding you."

He said, sounding a bit irritable.

"Yeah, yeah," Telerak said, turning to stare out the window. "You grew up in the Temple," he pointed out, still staring out the window. "You don't even know what it's like to have your own room, unless you have particularly vivid memories of when you were six. So why the modesty?"

Keliel changed clothes quickly and effeciently behind Telerak.

"I'm a private sort of man, Telerak, and this means I've developed some... Eccentricities over the years, though I doubt you really find that all to surprising."

"Nope," Telerak said, watching the sun dip ever lower in the sky. "Decent yet?"

As requested, Arenda went to the closet to help out. She really wanted to wear those boots, but she hadn't gotten around to buying anything that would go with them just yet.

Eventually she pulled out a black vest.

"Think this will go with them?" she asked. "Vests seem to be popular right now."

"Hmm, seems like your best bet," Tur said as she continued to rummage through the clothes. "Ooooh, this one's cute," she said, holding up a nice pair of pants. It had a beautiful floral print on the front. "Very nice looking. I might ask to borrow it some day," she said, laughing.

"Okay then," Arenda said. "So now we just need to find a shirt."

Digging through the closet, she eventually settled on a simple blouse of white silk. She also grabbed a belt. She then layed all of this out on her bed and proceeded to change into it.

"How does this look?" she finally asked. "Not too overdone, is it?"

"Yes, I have gotten rather used to changing in a hurry."

He said, re-adjusting the binding on his hand one last time. He looked rather bored, more a cover for whatever he was feeling than an actual show of emotion. A flatness, much like a good poker face. He pulled at the sleeves of the shirt, and tugged at the waist of the pants, not quite comfortable in these clothes, though this was not reflected in his face.
