Mission: 03- Ruins.
Wunderkind Flare Drive
June 16, 3756.
10:00 AM

The door not only closes, but disappears, leaving only an outline that there was ever a door there. The kids all sit down and relax, and wait for their transport to be moved to their target system.

Then an hour passes.

Then two hours.

Then three.

Now, Janet is doing word puzzles, looking vaguely worried. Kid is sitting on a seat, hugging her knees and rocking slowly back and forth. Three hours..They should have been uploaded into the system by now.

Alexis turned in her seat, occasionally looking at the others, feeling... totally awkward. After about an hour or so, most conversatjon-topics had been exhausted, even a healthy debate on which character from Percival and the Magical Raincoat was the coolest, and now they were... children... on a really, really long car-trip. Without any windows to play "I spy" with.

B. O. R. I. N. G.

She was trying her best to come up with something encouraging to say to kid, and finally she just nodded with a little 'humph' and got out of her seat, heading over to Kid.

"I-It's okay, m-maybe they just... lost the way or something... or the computer we're going to is r-really far away...."

The TV didn't get any reception, and since the flare drive wasn't currently connected to a computer, they didn't have access to the Internet, so Max couldn't get any streaming video, either. So, having no better use for it, Max decided to play the puzzle game he downloaded for when class got boring on it. Maybe some of the other kids would be interested, as well. He hadn't tried out the head-to-head multiplayer mode yet.

But after an hour of smalltalk and waiting around, and two hour of intermittent gaming and unsuccessfully trying to create data-matter from nothing, Max was super-bored. He decided to run a search of the flare drive to see if the brass had left any other data around, like maybe video files to keep the kids entertained on long trips.

Max looks, and in simply doing an in-depth search, finds that there is, in fact, a number of books, video games, movies, and music files saved onto the flaredrive, specifically for the kids to use.

Max blinks, surprised. He really wasn't expecting to find much of anything, much less such a wide variety of entertainment options. Why did he wait so long to look?

"Holy crap, you guys. This thing is loaded with fun stuff! Run a search; they've got directories for movies and music and games and even books! I don't know how much longer we're going to be waiting, or what's even going on 'outside,' but this stuff should make the time go by a lot faster."

Max checks out the movie directory to see if there's anything particularly kickass. "My vote is for an action movie."

Enzo didn't answer Max. His eyes were closed, and he looked for all the world to be asleep.

In reality, Enzo had spent the past hour analyzing the message he and the others had received from Rivendare. Enzo wasn't normally one to be paranoid, but they'd been trapped in a Flare drive for three hours. That should have at the very least been in the briefing: "Warning, long boring trip ahead." or something. The adults might have not mentioned it because the flare drive had so much for them to do on it, but that didn't feel right. It didn't fit with the way they'd been handling things since their life as wunderkind had begun.

So, a few possibilities lay before Enzo. The first, and most likely, was that he had over-estimated the Adults... adultness, and the Network they needed to reach was a long, long way away. The second was that the Flare Drive affected their perception of time. This could be something the adults didn't know would happen when they ordered the mission. A third possibility that Enzo didn't want to entertain for any length of time was that they'd been lost: Behind a desk, in a ventilation grate, something. They were out of sight and out of reach, and may be found in the next minute, the next hour, days, weeks, months... never. Not a concept to linger on. The fourth and final possibility, which seemed least likely and of the lot of them the worst possibility, they had been captured: The message was sent by someone other than Rivendare, they were secreted away in a flare drive and being taken to be researched on by any number of other groups, for any number of purposes. While they'd give anyone who kidnapped them hell literally the instant they were plugged into a computer, by the perception of that person, they had no garunteed way to get home if that was the case. This was also the only possible course that Enzo had the oppourtunity to learn something about one way or another, so he worked away at it.

Eventually he'd be able to dissect the code of the message and learn where it came from, whether that was the machine that had been sending them previous messages or not. If not, he'd warn the others of his misgivings... and if not, he'd join the others for movies and video games, and hope that they were plugged into a computer sooner rather than later.

Emily was a bit disconcerted by now. Three hours was a bit much time to be spending in transit. At least, for any trip within the building. They never had been told just where this damaged database was, so she supposed it could be somewhere completely different. Except that it was Deck City that had been hacked, so presumably it was somewhere within the city. The hack had supposedly inflicted a fair bit of damage, so maybe they were just having trouble with transportation.

In the end, she did some checking of her own, trying to access the flash drive's systems. It was set up like a vehicle, so maybe she could interface with it like one. No such luck. Though the fact that there was a bunch of entertainment on file suggested it was set up for long periods of occupation, wich ought to be reassuring but wasn't entirely. "How about The Heist?" she asked, "I haven't seen that one yet." It was supposed to be pretty good, and funny to boot.

As time passes, Sam's grown about the most anxious of them all, trying to keep himself from getting even more horribly bored than he already is. The idea of being bored while being a Wunderkind never occurred to him before, and it feels even worse now with how different everything is. Over the last few hours, he's occupied himself by bouncing from seat to seat, talking with the others for a few minutes before moving on to another conversation, by imagining (and talking about) all the things they might encounter and what they might do about them, and even by spending a good deal of time playing with the Ambassador. At the moment, he's back in his own seat, thankfully falling quiet for at least a few minutes before finally talking again.

"Hey, d'you think maybe stuff is just taking a lot longer for us 'cause stuff isn't really taking longer, it just feels like it's taking a long time? Like what you were talkin' about before about us being compressed and so maybe we're just a lot slower 'cause we're compressed? And it's like we aren't running as fast so it makes it feel like it's taking a really long time but it's only like a few minutes outside? Maybe it's something like that, d'you think?"

As Max and Emily start talking about entertainment, Sam perks up almost immediately, crouching on the chair and grinning. "Hey, that sounds neat, I've never seen that one either! What's it about? There's all kinda stuff here too? Where is it? How d'you think to it?"

Enzo's eyes snapped open, and he sighed. The IPs matched. Which meant it was one of the other possibilities, most likely. Hopefully they hadn't been lost. He replied to Sam, standing and walking over to play.

"I've thought of that, actually... But if our perception of time changed, we have no way of finding out while we're in here. We just have to wait and see if the door opens again."

Alexis nodded in agreement with the others. She hadn't seen a film in years, so to her it didn't really matter what they were going to see. She smiled awkwardly and turned to Kid. "H-have you seen it, Kid? Do you know if it's any good? I-I hope it is, it's... kind of boring, not getting to do anything, but I'm s-sure the grownups know what they're d-doing..."

"It's not bad." Kid says. "It's a remake of an old Adam We movie from way back, but they serious'd it up..."

for a moment, Kid seems to forget that she seems to be going mildly insane.

"Yes! There it is. You know, they've got a pretty good selection, actually. I'm glad they don't just have a bunch of lame 'family' movies in here."

Max loads up the movie but doesn't start playing it just yet. He turns to the group. "So, do we have a consensus, then?"

"The Heist?" Darren echoed. "That movie's three months old. I've seen it like seven times. I'll watch it again, but I'ma cover my ears every time the old guy's daughter shows up, 'cuz she's just duuuumb. Seriously, you guys should watch me and just do what I do, it's a better movie if you do it like this." He spoke with the voice of the true aficionado.

Kid sighs and shifts position. "You do realize that we've got nothing to do with the lines, at all, right? I mean, we can kind of ad lib a little bit, but we can't just say 'This character is dumb, I don't want to play them.' I wish we could, though..."

She sits back again and sighs. "I wonder if I'm ever gonna get back to it..."

"I'm sure if you wanted to they could do something! 'Cause there's a lot of movies with computer graphics and stuff, and you're already computer graphics so that part would be easier for them anyways! What kinda movies d'you wanna do now, anyway? You could do like...any kind of movie now I bet! I bet you could even just ask to be in pretty much any movie and they'd let you in because you're a Wunderkind and all, and that'd be really cool to have a Wunderkind acting in a movie they'd think."

They really should probably start the movie soon.

((Whoops! Slipping in my responsibility))

Seven times? Max was a little surprised that Darren was even more into these things than he was. He started the movie, and headed over to sit next to Kid, curious to glean some insight into the movie from someone who has been in them.

"You know, a lot of what Sam says sounds a little silly at first -- no offense, Sam -- but if you actually think about it, it's actually pretty interesting. You're basically your own special effects team, Kid. Who knows what kind of stuff you'll be able to do, eventually. You might be able to change how the camera sees you, in real time, eliminating the need for make-up or editing out... ummm..."

"Well, anyway, I'm not sure what plans D52 has for us, but, I mean, assuming the world isn't in constant jeopardy or something, we'll probably have some down time, and who knows what they will or won't let us do with it. Also, D52 is a business, and if your, your people, or some studio really wanted a new Kidritta Osbourne movie, I'm sure they could be 'persuaded' to let you go for a couple months."

This was all pure conjecture, and Max had no idea if it was even remotely probable, but he was hoping it would have some positive effect on Kid's mood.

[Same here... :( I'm so ashamed]

Alexis cuddled up in her seat, looking intently on the television-apparatus, curious what kind of film this was... after all, it'd literally been years since last she watched anything. "How... how many films have you been in, Kid?" she looks at the movie-starlet and smiles a little, "I... I'm kinda jealous... me and my b-b-big b-brother would pretend we... were in films... a lot of times."

"No commentating during the film," Emily told Darren firmly, waggling a finger at him, "It can't have been all that bad if you saw it seven times." She certinly hoped that Kid would be able to go back to acting. She hoped they'd all be able to do stuff outside the programme, for that matter. Though eternal children might not fit into normal careers. Still, for now it was still early days, and 'superhero' seemed like an okay career to be getting on with. If only she could shake that dream...

Darren shrugged. "I saw The Dark and the Stars more than that. That was a good movie. I used to watch a lot of movies back in the orphanage 'cuz..." he looked deeply embarrassed for a few moments and mumbled something that no one quite catches, but recovered quickly, and looked at Kid, changing the subject. "Can't you say 'no, I don't wanna be in your dumb movie, get someone else?' They send you the script, right?"

Enzo and Sam:
Spoiler:
You knew Darren before, so you remember that he spent a lot most of his time alone because he never really made friends...most people couldn't stand to be around someone so determined to prove he was better than everyone else all the time. The only way to keep Darren from making trouble was to occupy him with video games and violent movies.

Max turns sharply to face Kidritta, not entirely sure what to feel. Normally, he would take offense at such commentary, but from the mouth of the actress herself... well, that complicates things.

"What? That's... that's crazy-talk. I mean, no-one expects action movies be, like, Rosebud or anything, but I'd rather watch one of your movies than some old black-and-white movie about a sad rich old geezer any day.

Besides, I don't hear you criticizing your ability to kick ass in your movies. You're clearly confident there. If you really feel like you have a weakness in acting, instead of complaining about it, maybe you should work on improving it? I mean, I'm sure you've already done some of that. I don't know, I never really saw it as a big issue, but then, I don't watch action movies for the acting."

Emily frowned. It sounded to her like Kid had, from day one, been pigeonholed into doing martial arts movies, with little opportunity to develop beyond them. Plus of course, any movie she starred in would naturally have to have a special effects budget to conceal her unusual features. Kid probably had a better idea than anyone of just what flaws there were in the movies as a result.

Sitting around analysing her own movies with new friends... Well, it would be enough to make anyone squirm, regardless of the movies' quality. But how to communicate that to the others without just embarrassing her further? "Let's skip Kid's movies for now, shall we?" she asked, "Otherwise people'll want to know how she did some of the action scenes. And there's not enough space in here for demonstrations."

Mission: 03- Ruins.
Wunderkind Flare Drive
June 16, 3756.
10:01 AM

The kids manage to get through not not one, not two, but three movies before a signal over the door indicates that their Flaredrive is connected, and the doors open. Janet stands, making her way for the door, as the kid's internal clocks correct themselves: 10:01 AM. The journey that they felt was at least four hours was one minute, nine seconds.

Janet walks out, looking around. Those looking out the door notice that it seems to be something resembling a city, and it's pouring rain. Janet looks around herself, before looking back inside. "I...Think you guys might want to see this."

She turns back to the outside, and continues speaking. "It might be a good idea for some of us to stay compressed before we all think big again. Go ahead if you want, we can probably figure it out when we have a minute."

Kid stands up, and makes her way out, before she quickly begins to grow back to relatively giant size.

Lauren had enjoyed the movies, although they had driven home one issue that was really beginning to bug her. She and Kid were supposed to be the same class; they had the same general abilities...and if Kid could do half the stuff in real life that she could do in those movies, Kid was worlds better than she was. She'd be a great teammate, and might even be able to teach her some things!

She bit her lip and stroked Ambassador Leafshade a little too hard, eliciting an annoyed hiss.

The truth was, that bothered her.

Although not as stir-crazy as some of the others, Lauren welcomed the end of the trip. After all, they came here to Save the Day, not to watch movies.

"I don't mind staying small for now," she said to the others and stepped out the door. As she did, an idea struck her. She looked down at Ambassador Leafshade, who looked up at her. Yeah, it was definitely something they'd have to try later.

Much less bored once they started the movies, Sam settled down pretty quickly, becoming tolerable again just a short bit in. Still, he's one of the first up as they settle in, blinking as their clocks correct themselves. He grins, turning to everyone else. "Hey, I was right! ...Ugh, but look how long seconds are taking!" His grin quickly fades to a scowl as he "watches" his mind's clock tick by. "Thirteen didn't say that part of compression."

Following behind Lauren, he takes a look past her and outside, biting his lip. "...Well...um...I guess if you need someone to stay small, I can, but how long d'you think we'll have to stay small? Everything's taking like forever! And how come you think it's a good idea, Janet?"

Janet frowns. "Just a feeling that I get."

A sudden gust of wind blows rain into the trio's faces that have already gone outside, before Kid moves her now giant body to block it. Janet smiles up and waves. "This place...This is real. This isn't the database. It's all hitting me. The suits, the powers..Everything they told us. This is...Way outside the ordinary. We need to be ready for anything."

Sam steps outside and spins around, trying to take in the entire city, but it's just too much. There's so much here...he's quickly hit with the same feeling the same pure sensation of awe as Janet, as things finally settle for him. He even feels different in this other system; it's an indescribable feeling, but he can almost sense how he's running differently here than back in the Database. In the back of his mind, a bit of nervousness nags at him, but he doesn't care about that. He's too filled with amazement to even notice, too ready and too eager to face whatever might come next. "Wow! Yeah, we're really here! We're on a real mission and everything!" He looks back, curious what the flare drive looks like here, as he calls back to the others. "You gotta come out and feel this, guys! It's great!"

"...wow..."

Silvie stepped outside and strained her neck staring at the skyline. She had no words; this was even more amazing than she had expected. Normally she'd complain about having to be so small, but for now it just made the scenery even more out of this world.

"You're right!" she shouted back at Sam, with a wide grin on her face. "It's - it's just ...wow."

Alexis headed out after the others, eyes wide in anticipation for what they would see outside. Once outside, the sight of the city-like area, and the rain falling down on them, sent a chill down her spine, and unlike Lauren, Sam, Janet and Silvie, she decided to grow to normal size. Although everything around them was impressive... they were on a mission, and she needed to get her bearings right if she was going to be of any use to the team.

"We should try to get the basic t-topography down of t-this place before we do anything e-else..." she said to the others, trying to shield them from the rain too. "W-when Enzo comes out, we should discuss how to do it..."

Emily shivered as she exited the flash drive, decidedly disconcerted by the scene. The matchup with her dream was entirely too accurate for her liking, and it occurred to her that they never had really come up with a way to combat the virus. If infected wunderkind were about to start popping up, they were going to need to be ready. She exchanged a worried glance with Max, wondering just how they were going to explain the dream to the others.

Max met his sister's glance and knew that she was thinking the same thing he was: That the current scene was all too familiar, and their dream was now definitely something that had to be shared. He wasn't sure exactly how to go about it, but he gave his sister a reassuring nod and decided to just go for it.

Max didn't feel like shouting so that Kid and Alexis could hear him, so he decided to use Enzo's com link... except that Enzo hadn't gotten out of the flare drive yet, so it wasn't quite working properly. A little irritating. Instead, Max expands to a size roughly halfway between his former compressed size and normal size, to facilitate easier communication.

"Umm, okay guys, I think I need to call a group huddle. Emmy and I need to share something with everyone."

"So, ah... last night, Emms and I had a dream. That is, we both had the same dream. It was kinda freaky, but I'm just going to get right to it. It... pretty much looked like what we're seeing now, only with a bunch of slow moving computer-virus-infected Wunderkind surrounding us, trying to infect us like some kind of zombie movie. So... you know, I'm not looking to freak anybody out here, and I'm not trying to say we're having clairvoyant dreams or anything, but it might be in our best interest to equip ourselves with some kind of anti-virus software, and a good way to administer it, just in case. Especially since... " Max glances at Emily, not at all comfortable with the impending thought. "...especially since Thirteen was one of them."

Darren exited the bus in time to hear Max's words. "Where we gonna get anti-virus software from?" he asked. "We ain't in the Database anymore.

"And can we all pick a damn size?!"

"...But it was just a dream, right? It's weird that you had the same one, but how would a dream tell you anything?" Staring up to Max, he looks around the city, suddenly wary for any signs of zombies or whatever stepping out of nowhere. "Didn't we bring some with us, Darren? I thought that was one of the things we got outta the closet just in case, 'cause we thought we might need it to fix the network? Maybe we just talked about doin' it?"

Alexis looked a little sick at Max's description, shaking her head. "M...maybe we should unlock our weapons after all..."
