Nathan heard the bell and made his way down to the Vagantas’ waiting room just in time to hear his name called out by the announcer.
‘Derek Savron!’
He pulled his hood closer around his face, overshadowing his features, and allowed himself to be led out into the arena by a pair of guards. As he appeared into the light of day from the Vagantas archway the crowd cheered – not for him, but for the action that his arrival meant that they would soon witness. Looking around, Nathan noted that there were others fighting in magically enclosed areas around the arena – not only did this setup save time, it ensured that the crowd never got bored, as there was always action to be seen.
He stood within the one of the Vagantas circles, and the barrier went up around him. He relaxed, and went through the mental exercises that he had been taught.
And then, in a flash of magic, the blue slime appeared before him.
‘Oh please...’ He muttered, unable to restrain a laugh escaping him. Immediately he chastised himself, remembering his first lesson.
To underestimate an opponent is to invite your own loss.
He nodded absently, withdrawing his sword and mace from underneath his cloak. Breathing slowly – in, out, in, out – he focused all his attention on the slime, letting all other thoughts loose from within his mind.
Free your mind from obstruction: The world is your opponent, your opponent is the world.
And then the slime leapt forward, a tentacle erupting from it’s gelatinous mass and lashing out at Nathan, who calmly rolled with it, coming up and slashing the tentacle with his sword. The severed end fell to the floor with a squelch and twitched slightly. The crowd whooped and cheered.
What followed was an intricate dance – Nathan could have finished the creature with a single blow, but he intended to give the crowd what they had come for – entertainment. First the creature would attack, he would avoid it and counterattack, always breaking down at it, never letting up. It became more dangerous – the slime shooting out multiple tentacles at once, and Nathan decided enough was enough. He dived and rolled, coming up to the left of the tentacles, and thrust his mace down with all the force he could gather on the slime’s mass – which promptly erupted, spattering the arena floor with gooey lumps.
Standing, Nathan acknowledged the cheers with a nod of his head, and simply stood there, waiting for the next challenge.
