"Yeah, something like that, I guess. I can do a couple other things, too, like casting a spell to make myself stronger, or to make myself hit more accurately..."

He shrugged, and picked up his tools once more.

"I should get back to work....this metal isn't going to work itself..."

He went over to get a small amount of iron, and set about working it into a small blade for a dirk. He added some of the powder while the metal was still soft, which would keep the sharpest edge for years to come. He made a handle for it too, sizing it perfectly for Carlae's hand, and again carved his initials in the blade.

In a matter of a half an hour, the weapon took shape under Keldorn's hands. It was a good match for the young priestess it was meant for, it's edge was sharp and keen, and the iron was sturdy enough to hold up under all but the most sever beating. Over all, it was an excellent weapon.

Genji stood up after finishing his soup. "Well," he began, "Genji owe you thanks for your council. When Genji sees you again, he hopes dat we can talk of happier things."

The Nephillim patted his chest and strolled down the street toward nowhere. He hoped to find something to fill that missing piece, but he wasn't very optimistic. At some point, he would have to rejoin the others.

"Well, uh, here you go...It's not flaming, like the knife, but it is a lot sharper, and will stay like that for a lot longer..."

The big man handed the notably smaller girl her shiny new weapon.

Upon receiving the blade, Carlae touched it to her finger, barely allowing it to brush against her skin, and was pleased when it drew blood.

'You're right, it is sharp.' She smiled up at him. 'Thankyou, Keldorn.'

"You're welcome," he smiled, "It's....it's no big deal, really....If you need anything else, I guess now's the time to ask, before I get started on this sword..."

He grabbed a rag and wiped some of the dirt and sweat from his hands and face while he talked.

'Oh no, thankyou. This is more than enough for my needs.' She areplied. 'Say, are you hungry, Keldorn? I could pop out and get you a snack if you want. I'd quite like to go for a short walk anyway.'

Elena, having firmly affixed the appearance of Erika's rune in her mind, stood and stretched. It was time for a walk, and as she stepped outside, she immidiately spotted two things of interest: A shop on the corner that seemed to be selling crystals, and Genji, who was approaching from the direction of the food vendors in the market squar.

Elena thought of whether to show herself to Genji. She decided that she couldn't give a dry fig. She just walked across to the crystal shop.

If he saw her, good for him, if not, who cares?

Elena found a nice array of rose quartz, and other jewelery type crystals arrayed before her. While this was nothing to get overly excited about, there was one small box with some interesting looking things in them. One saphire, a powerful magical componet, and a pair of fogged crystals, also useful for higher level magic spells, could be seen there. An odd looking blue crystal sat next to them, not the right shape or color for a saphire, but still interesting looking...

Genji walked through the market with his head bent toward the ground, somberly thinking over his conversation with Friss. What else was there? Could he really survive as a hunter for the rest of his life? The idea sounded too unforfilling.

Lifting his head, he spotted Elena, one of the mage girls, darting into the crystal shop to his right. He stopped to pursue, but then thought against it. The Nephillim needed to drown his sorrows and take a nap. He headed toward the inn.

"Hmm?" Elena looked at the crystal... thing, and bent over to look at it.

She looked for any signs of what it was, and tried to examine it, to see if it had any magical properties whatsoever. Damned if she's asking the shopkeeper.

Elena, reaching down to touch the crystal, felt the hairs on her arms rise. Whatever it was, it had a very strong aura about it. Touching it was almost like being shocked by electricity, and it's facets seemed to be almost hypnotizing. The price tag on the small box indicated that any one of the jewels or crystals there would sell for five hundred crests a piece. A hefty price, but then, the gems were rare. And this blue thing could very well be one of a kind...

"...? Is that...?" she said, and turned around, kind of embarrassed with herself at not being able to identify what it was.

"What are these crystals?" she asked to the shopkeeper...

The shopkeeper shrugged. "I dunno. They were sold to me by some adventurer who had been out exploring the ruins of the old Golem Tower. The saphire and smokey crystals should be useful to any mage. I can't tell you what the other blue one is, it's not shaped or anything, but it seems to have an unsettling feel to it."

He stared hard at the blue crystal for a moment, then said, "Quite frankly, I'm anxious to get it off my hands. If it intrests you, I'll let you have it at cost, for 250 Crests."

Elena looked intently at the gem... Sure, it may have been useless, or even cursed... But even so, anything it may have been, it was interesting. She also wondered if she could bug Solberg for a second. She knew he was busy, but she didn't quite care. In any case...

"Fine, I'll take it." she said, intent on studying it. After that, she'd be heading back to the library, hopefully the old man would still be there..

The shopkeeper took Elena's money and gave her the crystal, and once she had it in her possession it was only a short walk back over to the library to see Solberg. Fortunately, the old mage was quite willing to see her, and she was let in immidiately.

"Returned so soon?" He asked pleasently. "I don't suppose you've happened upon a solution to this whole mess already?" The question was clearly meant as a joke.

Elena nodded, and added "If only it was that easy."

"I just wanted to ask if you recognize this." she said, taking out the crystal. "I thought you of all people should recognize something like this."

Solberg took the crystal up and rolled it back and forth in his fingers carefully. He stared at it, poked it all over with his fingers, and finally lifted it up and placed it right between his eyes, only inches from his face, and looked at it cross-eyed. He held it like that for a full twenty seconds, then slowly lowered it down and put it on his desk. "Where did you get this?" He asked, sounding mildly surprised and curious at the same time.

"Uhm.... I see. I'm surprised something so rare would turn up there. This is a mind crystal, something created by the Vahnatai. Odd that one of their creations would turn up just as they become important once more. I've heard of them, but never seen one before. Still, by beginning to activate it, I was able to confirm my suspicion."

Solberg lifted the thing off of his desk and handed it back to Elena. "These crystals will teach whoever looks into it and accepts its message about various things. This particular one contains useful alchemical knowledge, nothing outstanding. Once used, the magical energy in the crystal fades, until replenished by a crystal smith with enough skill. Since you purchased it, I think what you do with it is up to you. But I would think carefully before using it, as we don't know how compatable it is with humans."

"Hm. What kind of alchemical knowledge?" Elena asked, wondering how useful something like that could be...

Of course, it could be useful, yes, yes it could. And it only cost her 250 crests, too.

"A few potions recipies... and instructions for making something called a 'Ikenshi'*. I don't know what that is."

*GM's Note: This is a Vahnatai term I just made up, so don't got trying to figure it out. All will be made clear in time.

Elena nodded.

"Thank you for your time." she said, and put the crystal back in its place. Once again, she cursed the fact that she could only talk to him as a student talks to her master, or at least as another, more learned mage...

"Actually, if you don't mind, I'd like to come with you," Keldorn replied, realising just now how hungry he actually was. "I could use some fresh air, and I've never liked eating inside the shop anyway..."

He took off his apron, and wiped the dirt and soot off himself as best he could, then replaced his shirt. He secured his belt again, and shouldered his pack, not really trusting the overworlders to stay out of it. It occured to him, though, that they might not trust him very much either, so he set his returning hammer on the floor where his pack had been sitting, a sign that he did, in fact, intend to come back and pay.

And looked at the crystal. Should she learn it? She was the only one who knew enough alchemy, what with her Tower of Magi training...

... Fuck it. If anything, it would be interesting to learn this... Vahnatai knowledge... She stared at the crystal, her mind ready to accept any knowledge...

As Elena gazed into the crystal's azure depths, voices seemed to come from out of the depths of the gem's facets. At first they were unintelligeble, but they soon resolved themselves into clear words. Each one seemed to burn into her mind, so that forgetting them was totally out of the question.

Soon, she found herself in possession of many useful pieces of knowledge, but more importantly, a pair of truly handy potion recipies. The trouble was, they would require some rare materials to make. So would the mysterious Vahnatai potion who's name defied whatever translation abilities the crystal had. One thing was clear about this Ikenshi, though. It was meant to be used on opponets, and not allies, as it contained Mandrake and Greymold, both harmless, and even benificial herbs alone, but together capable of killing a person in just a tiny dose.

((Elena's Alchemy skill is +1, and she learns the recipies for a weak Invulnerability potion (requiring the ingredient Mandrake), the powerful Feirce potion (requiring Red Seaweed), which hastes and blesses the person that drinks it, and Ikenshi (which requires Mandrake and Greymold), which will have to be experimented with. ::ebil GM laugh::))

Elena blinked and shook her head, as the outsider knowledge sank into her mind. Yes, this was... Very interesting. Such potions cannot go to waste... But first things first.

She left, and went to meet the others. Why? She was bored, and tired. Why else?

'Okay then.' Carlae held the door open for him, ejoying the cool air against her skin, moist with sweat from the heat of the smithy's. 'I think I saw a food stall on the way here. Shall we go check?'

"Sure, let's go." He waved to the blacksmith in charge, and told him he'd be back after he got something to eat.

He stepped outside, and breathed in the cooler, non smoke-filled air, squinting once again in the brightness of the sun. He looked upwards toward it.

"I am never going to get used to that thing..."

The three Exiles ran into each other at the food stall Carlae had noted. It was a large, open air area, selling breads and cheeses (something fairly unfamiliar to the cave dwellers) along with a fair mix of dried meats and vegtables. It was perfect for either gathering provisions for a journey, or just grabbing a light lunch that could keep you going for a bit.

Genji returned to the inn and slept the for a bit, only to be awoken a short time later by the sound of footsteps in the hall. Whoever it was that was out there seemed to be trying very hard to conceal their presence.

After a few moments, they stopped, and everything was quiet...

Hmmm... strange...

Postby Nick Shogun » Thu Mar 06, 2003 3:24 pm

Genji glared at the walls and then down the hallway and grimaced. He didn't like the air about the room. It was too stale, too old, as though it was trying to hide something. Genji considered himself to have an excellent nose for smelling, but there was a scent he couldn't pick out-- and he couldn't identify the person who had roused him. He had no idea if it was human, Nephillim, Slith, or... something else.

Carlae breathed in the smells of the food and grinned happily. And then she saw a familiar figure approaching.

What the hell? Not even someone like her could beat hunger. Besides, if she absolutely had to work with these people, she'd better get to know them.

"On other thoughts... Why not."

Keldorn looked around the area, examining the breads and cheeses. After smelling them, he decided that no, he wouldn't be putting that stuff into his mouth. He did buy some bread, though, as well as a fairly large helping of what was labelled as pork, but it sure looked better than the stuff he was used to.

Turning to Elena, he inquired, "So, what have you been up to all day? Last I saw Solberg was giving you a book or something?"

"Yes, he did. Useful book, too. And very... Interesting, too."

"We'll have to see what we can find, then....The better equipped we are before we start this apparent suicide mission, the better that it won't actually be one."

He waited for the two girls to decide on something to eat, before finding a table.

"Speaking of which....while I've still got use of the forge, are you sure there isn't anything you'd want me to make for you? It'll be a lot cheaper than buying it later..."

"Hm. I never cared much for weaponry."

That was true, once she thought about it. She never paid too much attention to the weaponry she used.

"Well, I have this thing, but I bought it from a graduated apprentice." she trust her hand with the staff forwards, and pulled a lever, where the head split open a little, allowing a blade to come out.

"It would be good if you managed to improve it, I guess."

"Well it doesn't have to be weaponry. I could make you a pair of bracers, or other armour, if you wanted. I would assume that you'd cast more spells than you would fight with that thing anyway...."

Had he not been holding a plateful of food in one hand and a drink in the other, he would have taken the staff to examine it. As it was, he didn't.
