"At least let me make you a better knife?" he asked, suddenly realising that she probably didn't know he could make enchanted things. "I can probably make a better one than you've got, and....I know how to enchant weapons and the like. A dirk's too small to put a ruby into, but I think I have the stuff to do something for it...I'll cover the cost for yours."

Genji wandered out into the streets once more. He had left his fate in the care of Keldorn, and thought he still maintained his dagger, he realized he would eventually have to head over to the smith-district so he could pay the blacksmith for his services.

Meanwhile, Genji was looking for a snack. He had eaten a few hours ago, that much was true, and he could go for another half-day without food before the hunger began to set in, but right now he was depressed. He hadn't spoken to another Nephillim since the journey began, and he missed his tribe. He hadn't even seen many Nephillim in the city.

Walking into the midst of a bazaar containing many small restaurants, Genji seated himself at a wooden table located outside a shop and rested his head on his hands, sighing lightly.

Genji was alone at his table for a few moments, but soon became aware of a presence behind him. As soon as he did, a shadow was cast over the Nephilim, and the massive form of Friss came into view to his left. The Slith wordlessly leaned his spear and shield up against the side of the table and gingerly took a seat. Miracurously, the chair held his weight. The lizard looked at the feline for a moment, and then spoke. "It'ssss not easssy being among ssso many ssstrange beingssss, isss it?"

Elena stopped reading the book for a while, and sighed a bit to herself. Solberg was just in the next room... Yet what could he do? He was her superior.. At least in this body, with this memory. She can't talk to him, he'd never believe her, and that will be that...

"Damn it..." she said, a bit weakly, before swearing to herself that she'll pay him a visit come the time, before it is too late for the old man..

But this book was the first step. She, once again, started reading, trying to memorize the spells...

Uh-huh. Again, I'm full of cheese. ***

Postby Nick Shogun » Tue Feb 25, 2003 8:07 pm

Genji glared at the Slith suspiciously. He had been taught to be wary of all strangers by his tribal elders, hence why he had been so untrusting of Elena, Keldorn, and the others.

Keldorn or someone had mentioned a Slith, hadn't they? Maybe it was his imagination. Up here, however, especially in this area, Slith were rare, or at least Genji assumed. He was frowning, but he accepted the greeting nonetheless.

"Good mornin' to ya, Slith. Indeed, so many humans raises a rather irritating hair on Genji's neck, but it is something Genji has learned to accept rather begrudgingly. Do you have a name?"

The Slith nodded it's head in an odd, bobbing motion. It would be hypnotizing, if done for more than a few seconds. "My name issss Frissss. I am a Captain in the Sssslithzerikai army, ssssent here to get aid from the ssssurfffasssce. I am told you are one of the onesssss who hassss been assssked to be that aid. Small lizards taste good with vegetables.

Postby Nick Shogun » Wed Feb 26, 2003 12:30 am

Genji smiled for the first time in a while. "Genji would like to try some new things while he is up here. Beef stew sounds acceptable."

Genji raised his hand to signal the waiter. Of course, in such a crowded marketplace, there was no waiter. Genji, muttering, stood up and ambled over to the small, covered bar across the street.

The road they were on was quite narrow, lined with dirt, as was the norm, which felt awefully cool on Genji's bare feet. The restaurant was a small structure made of wood, side by side with the other assorted shops and food-selling establishments, a carve into the city but only for ordering, since all the tables were located outside the diner.

"Two beef stews," Genji commanded, assuming that was what Friss had asked for and too lazy to check.

Jason leaned up against the wall. He listened. He didn't feel much like talking. All of the new expriences had left him in a kind of daze. He was kind of just going along living moment by moment. Trying to generally accept everything. But now he was seriously trying to understand it all. It was mind boglying. He had to give it up, it was giving him a headache.

"Could someone explain this all to me? Later might be a better time, but eventually. 'Cause, I'm just missin' all of this. Ahh forget I said anything. Just think of me as a dits," Jason said still leaning against the wall.

Carlae blushed and frowned all at once, quite a cute combination on her face.

'You'd not charge me? But...' She cleared her throat. 'I'll accept you're offer, but I must insist on paying...'

Keldorn was about to give in, and accept her offer to pay, when a thought occurred to him.

"Well, you said so yourself that you're trying to raise money to help people, right? If you go and spend all that money on weapons, then you're not going to have as much to do that. Consider this my bit to help those who need it..."

Carlae was silent for a little while.

'Well argued... Very well, that sounds fair to me.' She smiled up at him. 'Do you think we'll find a forge?'

The big man smiled, and he began thinking about what he might or might not have time to make during the day. Suddenly he was anxious to get to work, it had, after all, been weeks since he'd had a chance to do any metalworking.

"Oh I'm sure we'll find one. A city like this has to have one. Besides, Solberg said there was....I just hope they'll let me use it..."

He glanced up and down the street they were walking, looking for a sign, or for weapons on display, or something that would indicate a blacksmith's shop.

"Shoulda asked him where it was..."

JoshuaDurron

He failed a booklearning roll...

Postby JoshuaDurron » Wed Feb 26, 2003 7:37 pm

There were a number of signs along the street, but in Moon they were all written, and furthermore, used words that Keldorn was unable interperet fully. However the sight of smoke rising in a constant stream from one of the shops was a good indication of where a smithy's might be, and sure enough, it proved to be a forge of impressive size, containing a total of four anvils to work metal on, and a constantly burning fire that was clearly magical. A man wearing canvas pants and a blacked apron of the same material approached the priest and blacksmith as they entered. He appeared to extrememly busy at the moment, and anxious to get back to his work.

"What can I do for you two today?" He eyed the pair over for a moment and added, "I don't do jewelery, if you're looking to buy a wedding band I suggest you try around the corner at Risok's place."

He was never very well read anyway.

Postby EKDS5k » Wed Feb 26, 2003 11:35 pm

Keldorn was caught off guard by the man's assumption, and blinked in surprise.

"Uh...oh, a wedding ring? No, ah, no, we're not here for that."

He briefly wondered what led him to that conclusion, but quickly dismissed it as unimportant.

"My name is Keldorn Stevenson, a blacksmith from Exile, as you've probably figured out by now. We're in need of some equipment, and I was wondering if you might rent out the use of one of your anvils for the day? I'm willing to pay for the use of your tools, of course..."

The man raised an eyebrow. "Oh, a travelling smith. Well I don't something like that very often... but one of my men is out sick today. He's contracted some nasty form of fever, so I suppose you could use his anvil and tools. We can work out a form of compensation when you're finished. Will you be providing your own materials?"

EKDS5k

Re: He was never very well read anyway.

Postby EKDS5k » Wed Feb 26, 2003 11:49 pm

"Actually, the only materials I've got on me are some decorative pieces I was going to put in."

Well, just the rubies, anyway, and some of the components for some minor enchantments. But he wasn't about to announce those intentions, lest he be pestered to make a whole bunch of stuff for other people.

"But as for metal, straps, and other various materials, I'll need to buy those off you, I'm afraid."

JoshuaDurron

Re: He was never very well read anyway.

The shopowner nodded. "That can be arranged as well. For now, the second anvil from the far wall is yours. As I said, we'll arrange payment later."

Once he got over to the anvil, he found a veritable treasure of metal working tools at his disposal. Tongs, hammers of all sizes, several types of molds, pliers, and anything else a metalsmith could need*.

He also had bronze, iron, silver, and small amounts of gold at his disposal. Of course, he would have to pay for all those materials after he used them...

*By anything else, I mean 'anything Doc might want, and would be fairly typical metalsmith stuff, but that I didn't think to include'.

EKDS5k

Re: He was never very well read anyway.

Postby EKDS5k » Thu Feb 27, 2003 12:30 am

Keldorn looked at the impressive array of tools in front of him. He recognized them all, of course, but there were more sizes and types than he had to work with back in Exile.

"Geez....We never had this much equipment to work with...This is gonna go a bit faster than I had orignally thought..."

Thanking the man, he turned and grabbed one of the aprons off the wall. He undid his girdle, and set it along the wall beside his backpack. No sense in working so hard to hold that heavy stuff up all day. He dug through his bag, removing a few empty-looking pouches. They weren't actually empty, but the amount of components he had in them was small indeed. It would have to do.

He set the pouch down beside the anvil, took off his shirt, and stuffed it in his backpack. Upon a brief inspection, several small scars could be seen along the length of his thick arms, which a healer such as Carlae would recognize as being burn marks of varying severity. There was also a long one running from his right shoulder, down his back, and stopping just above his belt. He donned his apron, and prepared to set to work...

Carlae winced in silent sympathy at the pain Keldorn must have felt when getting those scars, especially the large one. She assumed he had got them while working at the forge; that was his craft, after all.

The priestess was content to watch him work in silence, only occasionally asking about what he was doing, and only when he didn't look to be doing something delicate.

Keldorn wasted no time in getting to work. He decided on sticking to iron, as it was the strongest of the four metals, and was more expensive only than bronze. There was no point in wasting his money on gold and silver, especially when they weren't as good for weapon making anyway.

He figured he'd start with Genji's knife, and helped himself to a sufficient amount of iron. He began shaping it into a blade of about a foot and a half long, and three inches long at the base, tapering to a point, obviously. He made a small indentation near the base of the blade, where he laid in a ruby, casting an enchantment of fire over the thing, and then turned to making a handle for it. He measured it with his own hand, and then doubled it, figuring that should be more than enough for the Nephilim to grasp effectively. As well, he carved his initials in the flat of the blade, opposite to the ruby.

Re: He was never very well read anyway.

Keldorn soon finished this first task, easily casting the enchantment and creating an impressive flaming dagger. The iron was well worked, if a bit rough in it's inherent nature. His first creation was a very good work all around.

--------------

The stew Genji and Friss had ordered arrived. The two bowls were placed by a nervous looking human woman, who quickly retreated after asking if they wanted anything else.

The two bowls were big, not merely little saucers with a few drops of liquid in them. The looked like they could very well contain a half gallon of stew, and they were full almost to the top with a good, chunky broth. Friss smiled. "Thissss isss one of the fffew plassces in Moon that knowsss how to sssserve food."

--------------

A page appeared next to Jason. "Oh," he exclaimed, "are you part of the Exile group?"

Well, who is these days?

Postby Nick Shogun » Thu Feb 27, 2003 11:09 pm

Genji took a slurp and nodded in agreement. "Dis refreshment lights my eyes... it is indeed grand."

Suddenly, the Nephillim had a compelling thought. His inquisitive nature led him to register interest in this new fellow's opinions. "Let me ask you," the Nephillim began, "what you think of my comrades? I am assuming you met them already."

The Slith let out a long, slow hiss, breath escaping from between his teeth in a steady stream for several seconds. Clearly, he was thinking on it.

He held up his latest creation, and wiped the dirt and soot off of it, the metal glinting in the light from the forge. He swung it in front of him, and was pleased to see a trail of fire in the air behind it. Placing the knife on top of his backpack, he looked around for some water. All that working and sweating had made him thirsty, after all.

Taking a long drink before answering her, he set the jug down on a table.

"Hm? Yeah, I can do a little....It really depends on the quality of the ingredients I'm working with, though. I can't do much with just iron, but a little of this stuff," he held up one of the emptier-looking pouches, "and I can make you a blade that'll keep a magically sharp edge for years."

Another drink of water, before he resealed the jug and set it down somewhere.

"Oh not at all...I never actually knew I could do it, until once we were making some equipment for a mage...Iron rods and wands and the like, and I guess he just detected the ability in me to do it. He gave me a few tips, like the fact that I actually needed components, and then I found that just by making the weapons, and putting the components in at the right point, that they'd come out magical."

Elena, after a fair amount of studying, found that she was beginning to retain more and more of what was in the book. In fact, she had the entire thing quite memorized by this point. Perhaps now would be a good time to look around the library, or the stores outside. A discerning mage could often pick out useful bits of information from dull books, or valuble goods mixed in with the cheap goods of a pawn shop...

But Elena was different. She turned the book around, and gazed for quite a long while at Erika's symbol, the one which probably was written at the back of the book. In any case, she looked at the symbol, trying her best to memorize.

Should any quill and paper be available, sketching it wouldn't hurt either. In any case, she was memorizing it.
