Angel nodded in response to Carlae's question, and soon the party was situated in their rooms for the night, the four men in one, the two ladies in another. The party slept soundly, recovering energy after a long day on the road, as well as exposure to a little unfamiliar magic.
Almost as soon as they had awoken the next day the six of them were summoned to Solberg's office. Friss was present once again. He sized up the three party members he was not familiar with, his cold, reptilian gaze sweeping over them as if they were prey to be hunted.
Once introductions had been made by Solberg, the elderly mage turned to the matter at hand. "First things first," he announced. "Here is your pay."
With that, Solberg took out a moderately sized sack of gold coins and handed it to Keldorn. It contained sixty CentiCrests, coins worth a hundred crests a piece. The pay was every bit as good as had been promissed.
"Secondly," Solberg said, "There is another matter I would like to speak with you about. In short, Uspecified Services has another task they would like you to undertake. It's up to you whether you choose to go or not, we can't order you to undertake this mission. Here are the details..."
Solberg proceeded to repeat pretty much everything Friss had told them the night before, but adding, "A group of Exile spies has sent word conferming the Silth's observations. Two days later, the same group of spies was found dead outside the Slith encampment they were staying in. Your assignments are two fold. One: Investigate the Vahnatai and see if they are really up to something dangerous, or if they are simply working on some sort of magical experiment that could produce similar magical disruptions. Two: Find out who killed our people in the Slith camp. It is very possible there is a connection of some sort. Are you willing to undertake these tasks? If you are, you will be rewarded with twenty thousand Crests by Unspecified Servises."
Firss spoke up for the first time, adding, "The Sssslithzerikai would alssso be greatfful, and would undoubtedly offfer a reward of their own."
Solberg looked at the six Exiles calmly. "Again, there is no requirement that you do as we ask. Do you accept this mission?"
The first person to reply was Angel. He said that he was content with what he had gathered so far, and took his portion of the pay and departed. Solberg waited until he had left, and then asked, "And the rest of you?"
