Receipts! Why the Hell didn't Max think of asking about receipts? This is why he would be a lousy detective. Max was kind of hoping Leafshade would incorporate the info about a stolen dress and jewelry and frozen case-smashings in her creepy gypsy-ferret mind-reading performance. Maybe throw Ettezan off guard. But if she's got recipts, then that would be pretty striking evidence that she didn't actually steal anything, even if her shopping methods are highly suspect.
Also: Why can't he shut up?
"You've got receipts? I can't speak for the pink princess over there," Max gestures nonchalantly to Lauren, "but I basically assumed if the law was after you, then you were in some kind of legal trouble. But if you've got receipts, as far as I'm concerned, that's proof of innocence. In that case, this-" Max mimics Ettezan's scene-indication gesture -"probably would be unlawful."
Max isn't entirely comfortable letting her go, especially if Thirteen gave Lauren magical girl powers to intervene here, but he's much more comfortable with that than starting a big altercation at the mall with all but one Wunderkind in unfit condition to fight. Especially if Ettezan actually did buy her stuff.
He crosses his arms. "So, would you mind showing your receipts?" Max nods to Lauren a second time. "I don't know the magical girl code of conduct very well, but if you've got proof of ownership, then I'll back off. Maybe even apologize."
Max sends out a message to Lauren, Janet, and Enzo. Ettezan's claiming to have receipts. If she produces them, that means either there's a second person capable of freezing a jewelry case and smashing it open, or she actually did buy some stuff, but stole some other stuff. Or helped someone else steal it.
Although, actually isn't Ettezan strong enough that if she wanted to smash a jewelry case she wouldn't have to freeze it to do it? Maybe freezing would help her make a more precise strike? Is that how it works? Max regrets his lack of knowledge of the physics of freezing things.
