Max is caught off guard. Partly from Lauren's and Leafshade's overt ridiculousness, but mostly because he really wasn't expecting the Wunderkind's first epic opponent to not recognize them. What is this, a comic book? You just put on some glasses and suddenly nobody can tell you're Mr. Amazing?

But... considering they're not in their combat bodies, it might actually be a good thing that she doesn't recognize them. Is this a strategic advantage? Max doesn't want to create too big a scene, and who knows how Ettezan would react to find out the same kids were getting in her way again. Then again, there's a good chance she'll figure it out before this incident is over.

Maybe it would have been better if he had just let Lauren do her thing and kept his big mouth shut.

Max tries to push the question aside as nonchalantly as possible. It's a good thing he's well-versed in "nonchalant and aloof."

Max shrugs. "Maybe." He nods towards her bag of stolen goods. "So what's in the sack? Presents?"

Max shifts his weight. So far, things haven't gone crazy. That's good.

"Okay, so maybe it's possible that you're not a thief. But if that's true, why was mall security after you? And if you're innocent, why were you running from them?"

I've got this! Lauren sent along the link. Being a bit distracted, she sent it to everyone. I am undercover! I've got a mask and everything! And I totally can fight her for... Lauren's attention flickered to the gauge hovering in her vision A little while longer at least. I'm busy! Talk to you later!

Still, they had a point. Lauren's mind was racing. She hadn't really thought all of this through. She was a superhero. Superheroes prevent crime. Maybe it really didn't matter or...

Wait a sec. Thirteen. She reopened the link to the others. Thirteen thought this was important enough to get involved!

But still, what to actually do...

"She lies..." Ambassador Leafshade said, in a low menacing hiss.

"What?" Lauren blurted out, as she glanced at the ferret, startled for a moment before very quickly returning her gaze to Ettezan and resuming her pose.

Ambassador Leafshade didn't turn away from Ettezan. "Born from the shadows of sinister desires..." she hissed out, "You would hide the truth in shadows...but I am that shadow."

Lauren was looking more than a little worried at this point. Ambassador, where are you going with this?

It's Lady Nightshade. And we need to get the stuff she stole from her and get her out of here. And she doesn't know what we can do! The only way out of this before time runs out is bluffing. Just wait for a chance to take the bag!

But we're terrible at--

No, you're terrible at lying. "Every lie you tell reveals more to me. Thoughts...desires..." She paused and sniffed the air. "The shadows bring me..." She paused once more, gazing off into the sky. When she spoke again, she was no longer hissing. "A strange...sound? It means nothing to me." She lowered her gaze back to face the criminal. "Perhaps it means something to you? The sound is...'ettezan'"

Enzo was confounded to say the least. Lauren wasn't actually fighting yet, but he still didn't like the position they were in. And why the hell was Thirteen getting involved? Since when was she able to make objects appear in the world around them? To be fair, she did all manner of things that didn't make sense, but delivering them a chip seemingly through magic in the middle of the mall... It seemed far fetched, and what the fuck would Rivendare do when he learned that Lauren had suddenly turned into a super hero for apparently no reason? He was vaguely aware of people talking around him, but he continued to ignore that while he focused on what was happening at the other end of the mall, and what might theroretically be happening with their handlers and watchers.

On that note, he decided to try listening in on the local radio chatter. If Rivendare and his team were reacting to this, he would hopefully be able to pick up on that and decide what to do next from there.

I don't think it's 'cause you're blue that people don't trust you, I think it's 'cause you dressed like a hoodlum, brought a sack to the mall, and you make threats."

D52 hasn't realized that the flying girl is Lauren yet. Keep this in mind and don't act like you know about Project Bluesky. We can still get out of this without ruining Rivendare's trust in us maybe.

Enzo hoped they would find some way of ending this that didn't make things worse than they were... What DID Ettezan steal, anyway?

Hmm, things are getting dicier. All Max really wanted is for Ettezan to come clean about stealing stuff. Or... about whatever it was that got her in trouble. He's not buying the "I'm blue" thing. This is a big city. There's way weirder things you can be here than blue.

Max sends out a question to everyone. Hey, out of curiosity, you guys didn't happen to see/hear about any mischief around the mall? Anything from theft to disorderly conduct?

"My dad used to drag me for shopping, like, for my mom's birthday and stuff," she said. "And they always put the same kinda gems together. So, we just need to sneak up and see what's still there, and we'll find out what was taken."

Glancing back to Enzo briefly and seeing he seems for the most part okay, he looks back. "So are you doing any kinda schooling right now, or did your break start already? What year are you anyways?"

So... Max really wasn't getting the replies he wants, but at least someone responded. Time is critical; he'll have to make do for now.

Max puts up his hands as if to try to slow things down and smiles as warmly as he can manage given the current situation. "Whoa, hey, I'm not askin' for anything but truth. I'm just sayin', you know, if you came here to shop, most stores will throw in shopping bags for free. You don't have to bring your own. Unless you're an environmentalist or something."

Max wants to put the spotlight back on Lauren and Leafshade and their little performance. He shares with them what Casey told him about the jewelry. Looks like there's been at least one robbery in the mall tonight. Apparently someone lifted some jewelry. That's probably not enough to fill up Ettezan's sack, but, you know, I thought maybe you guys could work that info into your little charade somehow.

... Actually, why should Max be acting as a relay between Lauren and the rest of the group? He sends another message to all Wunderkind. Actually, lemme add something to that last message. If you guys saw or heard about any mall mischief, don't just let me know, include Lauren and Leafshade too, ok?

Well, Emily sent to everyone, somebody's stolen a dress from one of the stores. Nothing pointing to Ettezan, but I don't think there's two blatant thieves running aound.

Enzo wondered briefly if the use of their general channel would tip off the boss. He kept listening to radio chatter, in case they figured things out. They hadn't said anything about spotting Max yet, but he may not have tuned in soon enough to catch it. He sent a message to Sam real quick.

This is what I've been distracted with, sorry. Kind of freaking out a little. I think Lauren and Ettezan might be about to fight, and I'm hoping we can avoid that.

Suddenly struck with a look of intense worry, Sam looks away from Kristina, sending off a message to everyone. Huh? Wait, what? Ettezan's here? She's attacking Lauren? What's going on, where are you guys? I'll come help!

He looks back a couple seconds later, frowning. "Um...sorry, but I might needa go soon I think! There's stuff happening, an'...I still wanna talk about this, but I might needa...um...go...do stuff."

Ambassador Leafshade paced back and forth across Lauren's shoulders. "I see much...but what I do not see is...why. I sense a great power within you...and yet you squander your gifts shoplifting?"

Lauren was beginning to feel increasingly awkward holding her pose. Umm...I don't see how this is helping us get the bag...

Ambassador Leafshade kept a steady gaze on Ettezan Look, just trust me! Besides, maybe we can find out more about her!

We're kind of running out of time here...Also, it kind of sounds like you think she should be a better supervillain.

Well, she should be! Ambassador Leafshade shot back.

Lauren sighed and spread her arms in front of her. "Okay. Look, could you just give back the stuff?" she said weakly. "I'm pretty sure we could have a really cool fight and everything, but if we're doing it over some stuff you took from the mall, we're both just going to look ridiculous."

When they arrive, it's as it was described- Part of the case has been surgically smashed in while frozen. The shattered area is in the shape of a hand print. How odd.
