"I...I'm fine...th-thank you..." Chiere summoned her courage enough to give Ethra a little smile.

It warmed her to think that someone was concerned, but inside, a knot formed in her stomach. Could she trust her enough to ever let her...know? Somehow, she doubted it.

A hunter's arrow, a striken bird, plummeting from the sky... Ethra banished the vision by biting her lip. Blood trickled into her mouth as the skin of her lip tore, already dry and cracked from the winter. She clung to the sensation of the metallic taste, as she mechanically placed one foot in front of the other.

Dreckard walked along, catching the various sights and scenery. There were a lot of shops, and a lot of eateries. Though usually Dreckard went through towns, barely staying, he was strangely enjoying his time there.

In short order the ragtag group made it to Lord Selondor's manor. And what an interesting manor it was indeed. It was originally a small frontier fort, as the solid stone "main" house attested. It was short and squat, and set on the top of a hill, allowing both a good look at the village right beneath, and of much of the surrounding lands.

But everything aside from the main part of the manor seemed to be both newer, and made of wood and stone that did not show the weather-beaten quality of the stone already in use on the main building, but no less sturdy for the lack.

"Dorvan and Mareg here along with the thief and some guests," announced one of the guards.

A short silence followed, broken by the slow opening of the manor doors onto a large reception room seemingly occupied by one person, a hawkish man in dark red and black robes. Lord Selondor was apparently not in a good mood. Not at all.

"Who are these people, and where is my jewel?"

Chiere stared at Selondor with widened eyes. An image of a bird of prey swooping down on a smaller bird flickered in her mind, causing her to shudder and edge around behind Ethra to try to avoid his sight.

Numbly, she stood, waiting anxiously for the others to answer his questions so they could move on and leave the manor.

Alright.. he's... evil... definitely... but you're not supposed to judge people by... their looks...

Ethra flicked her eyes towards Chiere long enough to see her move behind Ethra.

Don't blame her... this guy gives me the creeps.

Then a startling revelation hit her.

I heard that cry. She cried out... she had cried out.. from this stone..... why the hell are you thinking about sticking your head out! You're dead if... if... there are guards... never should of... come here... dammit! Ands that other voice... oh we're I'm in trouble... if he's a sorceror he can probably just see the darkness like you did...

"We are the ones who caught the thief lord Selendor." Ethra bowed politely to the man standing in front of them.

Dreckard bowed too, as was custom. "Yes, we caught him. I believe she has the jewel, your highness." He pointed toward Ethra, the epitome of politeness.

As Ethra bowed, her winga reached as far as it could, her right wing touching Rainne barely, seemingly tapping her on the shoulder as if meaning to tell her something. Ethra quickly straightened herself so that she would be semi-hiding Chiere again.

"Good good. If you would be so kind as to return my Black Diamond to me, please," Lord Selondor intoned in a less-than pleasing manner. Pointing towards the now bound Kelan, he added "Oh, and if you don't mind, I'd like to hear about how you captured this rogue."

"Capturing prey is one of my specialties... I do it for a living.... might I ask.... if there's something special about this jewel.. the thief was hallucinating about a demon..." Ethra stared quietly into the lord's eyes.

Dreckard gently poked Ethra with his elbow. "Just give him the jewel and nobody gets hurt..." he whispered, a bit frantically.

Chiere shrank, trying her best to stay out of view, silently thankful for Ethra's efforts.

But Ethra kept talking about...something...and the result was that the man kept staring at her.

And Chiere was behind her. So he was looking closer to her.

She worried and fretted, sucking on the cut on her lip. Ethra must know what she was doing...so Chiere just waited, holding her breath, until such time that she could leave...

Lord Selondor looked at Ethra curiously. "Say you a Demon? Where, exactly did he get a look at this demon? And... come to think of it, why should you believe what he says at all? For all you know he might be cooking up lies in the hopes you'd let him go."

"He admited to the theft in the end..." Ethra was hesitating.

By the foulest depths I hope you burn in hell you who are in.... no... of my own free will. I've decided... Damn fate. Best to get this over with. Are you trapped in there? If you are.. I'm sorry but...

Ethra produced the jewel from her pocket and held out her hand, staring at the lord. She extended her hand offering the jewel, yet in her heart offering this lord nothing but death, pain, sorrow, and the hope that she could get back the jewel. "Could I possibly ask though... for my part in the rescue of this jewel... that this man... be freed?" With her other hand she gestured at Kelan.

I can't risk all of our lives right now. *sigh* I'm an idiot.

As much as she wished to be a bit more in the center of attraction, Rainne could not do much, but did note something which quite took her attention. Namely the house. She spent so much time staying in a house where the beds seemed like they were going to fall apart, and had merely enough to eat, but look at THIS.

... She kept silent, so that her words would not betray her thoughts, but listened to them talk..

Lord Selondor chuckled a bit darkly at Ethra's question. "My dear, I should think not. After all, if word got around that I was letting the thief that stole my prize jewel get away.... nevermind. The thief stays with me," he proclaimed.
"However, you CAN take 6,250 drams each for your services to my estate. JOHN!!!"

At that, the two guards holding Kelan dragged him off, presumably to whatever passed for a prison in this place. Right then, a wrinkled and bored-looking old man came into the room along with 4 other servants, offering money to the assembled party.

"Please accept this gift, my friends. Oh, and don't worry, that thief will recieve the justice he deserves."

Chiere's eyes grew wide at the --to her-- veritable fortune she was receiving. Why, that was enough money to feed herself for months...

Or to get herself killed.

Warily and wordlessly, she accepted the dram, full of both anticipation and trepidation.

Ethra gave a deep bow to lord Selondor "Thank you, my lord."

May Kelan's ghost haunt your dreams.... and mine.

Ethra accepted the money, and took her bag of furs back from Chiere so her hands would be free, tossing it over her back.

Money, another word for crap. Can get you things, but its still crap.

Ethra whispred quietly to Chiere, "Would you prefer to hold the furs?"

Chiere shook her head, though honestly, she would have liked to. The furs were warm and soft and altogether rather appealing. It was also strangely comforting to hug them. However, they belonged to Ethra, and Chiere had no right using them like that...

Lord Selondor looked a bit thoughtful for a moment at the question, then suddenly said "If you wish, you may stay in the guest house for the night. That is, if you don't have anyplace else to be for the night."

Chiere shuddered; staying at the manor was the last thing she wanted to do. She watched Ethra carefully, fearful of her decision, barely aware of the others in the group...

Ethra kept her head low, so she was able to spot Chiere's shudder out of the corner of her eye. "I would love to stay the night my lord, but circumstances might not allow it, may I return in five hours with my answer? As you know, business msut become before pleasure."

Clutching the money as if her life depended on it, Chiere shifted around nervously and began edging towards the exit. Without willing it, her wings stretched out, knocking her cloak askew and cupping half-way around her body. She was eager to go outside and be under the sky again...and away from Selondor.

Ethra bowed once more to Selondor, "I will be back at the appointed time, Good day, my lord."
She turned around and jumped slight,y hugging Chiere's back, careful not to put any pressure on her wings, she whispred to Chiere from behind, "We can leave Chiere... keep those wings folded for a bit.. heheheh, you'll be outside soon enough."

Chiere nodded and scurried outside, not bothering to worry about what her hurried steps might speak of to Selondor.

Once outside, she immediately and quickly untied her cloak and arched her back, stretching her wings as far as she could. She let the sun fall down on her face, squinting her eyes to block out the scorching light. Somehow, the world had turned very very hot...

That changed quickly enough, however, and Chiere jerkily tugged her cloak back on to fight out the cold of the season. "E-Ethra..." she stuttered, turning to the other Tilan, "th-thanks..."

Dreckard peered at the crazy Tilan. He didn't know what the deal with those things were. They were too wispy for him. He yawned. As much as he'd like to sleep, he decided to see the sights. After all, there had to be SOMETHING interesting out there, right?
