Kelne can see the beast in the water some distance away, it seems to be looking to get a good amount of momentum going. He can't see the shadowy thing that Dia summoned, but it is much smaller and less substantial.

He can feel the thing is growing quite irritated with him, as well.

At least I've injured it.

This was little consolation to Jak's current dilemma. His repertoire of spells were highly damaging but, sadly, also highly direct for the most part. Deprived of a visual on the beast he was far less useful than he'd otherwise be. And with his odd brand of astral reading trying to target something his non-projectile malediction spells was tricky. Still, he could always try.

He closed his eyes and tried to sense where the thing was. He couldn't see the astral, but he could at least feel it roughly.

(If he can get a fix on the serpent well enough to cast a spell he'll be trying to Poison it.)

Kelne fires, and is fairly certain that the ship's rocking has sent his shot awry. Still, he notes the spell discharges, and he knows the creature has felt it from the telepathic link. Though it was not quite as effective as it could have been.

KYAAAAAA! echoes a scream in Dia's head, one that she echoes to some extent, as the shadow creature bursts from the ocean, flailing about before it can recompose itself. However it seems unhurt. Dia, however, has developed several burns across her flesh. You dimwits! What in the name of the chill blackness are you doing!?

Ah, the folly of summoning. he mused silently to himself as he observed Dia's fetching new set of burns. Never, ever bind your life force to something that'll be put in harm's way.

"Right." he said in response to Kelne's order. Placing a spell on the thing was a problem, but putting a big block of ice in it's path was another.

He made a conscious effort to make sure it wasn't under the ship, though. He did not want a mass of ice ramming into it from below.

The feeling was mutual. Still, one look at the speed it was building up told him it hadn't quite thought this through.

"Alright, people, let's give it a bit of a sting," he said, leveling the pistol and carefully setting a charge of lightning on the bullet in the chamber before firing. "Jak, another iceberg, if you would? Just in front of it - we don't want to be hemmed in."

"By Gottkrieg's saggy hairless balls!" Dia screeched. "Don't you think........that you might have warned me?"

The dragonhalf was soon snapping out a series of gestures, veritably yanking into place the mana necessary to prematurely end the summon; she wanted to ensure that this particular excretion of the shadow plane wound up back where it damn well belonged.

"Before you went hogshit and electrocuted everything in the water, you could have given me two seconds to pull my summon out!" Dia spat. "It's not like you didn't have a chance to know it was there, it was above water while you were!"

Dia gritted her teeth, trying to force herself to calm down. Arguing didn't help anything...outside of the Jade Dragon kitchen, anyhow. And a few other situations. Well, anyhow, it wouldn't help here.

Pulling a few errant threads of mana close to her, she began to search for where this serpent was in the ocean. If she could find it, she wanted to see if she couldn't play any sort of trick on it at all.

And thus, Dia takes a deep, steadying breath, and attempts to simultaneously weave both illusion and mental magic together to create the illusion of a second serpent in the water. This one appears underneath the actual serpent, having a vague, shadowy form similar to the gargoyle, making quiet movements, but--if the psionic part of the spell goes correctly--having a definite feel as it brushes up against the other creature.

Dia finds that trying to blend two spells together doesn't work too well. The weaker of her magics keeps her from concentrating on her stronger one. As such. she is able to pull off neither, and thus simply expends herself; radiating a lovely palette of spend illusionary and mental magicks should one look at her astrally.

Godsdammit! Dia cursed silently, finding the nearest railing to slam her fist against; immediate regret followed the action as she grimaced at the pain. She made little attempt to calm down as she weaved her next summon.

'I'm very sorry to bother you in whatever you are doing, sir,' Dia called. 'But if you would be so kind as to help me out, it would be appreciated.' With full indiscretion, she let the mental image of a furious, bunny-eared dragonhalf leak through the telepathy.

Jeridan, who had been very busy about making the first shot against the sea creature, ahd gone very quiet since it's assault on the ship had begun. He seemd to have disappeared from the deck since the ship had been rammed.

Perhaps he had run off like a little coward, to hide under the deck? It might have fit with his actions earlier, but no. The observant would see him huddled under the railing, holding onto the side railing. Gibbering something to himself over and over... and holding his stomach. He looked positively ill... and absolutely terrified.

While no one else had much prior experience with him, Jak will find this strange. In addition to the initial attack on the sea serpent, he had never seen Jeridan react like this to anything. And he was not an inactive man in the guard. This man risked his life every other day on a slow week. What could possibly have sent him spiralling into such a state?

For now, it will likely have to wait. There is still that serpent to deal with. He should be ok, if the ship survives. So he sits by himself, gripping the wooden rails with hands like vices.

"all gonna die... all gonna die..."

"Valentia!" Shouts the gunner, "Get yer apple head in gear and load that motherfucking cannon yesterday! Just because you got the brains of a fish don't mena we breath water if this thing sinks!"

****

Paige feels she has shoveled enough coal. Now she needs to manipulate the valves and get the building pressure to the rotors themselves.

****

Concentrating, Jak casts his spell, directing the spell to make an iceberg that should not only slam into the serpent, but also form a half-decent barrier between the ship and himself.

Then something unexpected happens, as he unleashes the spell. The creature's shadow fades a bit. Then it suddenly darkens, moment before its serpentine form leaps from the water!

In almost slow motion, Kelne watches as immense jaws soar from the ocean, directly toward him. he can hear its roar piercing the air. He even sees the top of the iceberg tear a long shallow wound along the serpent's body. He watches as it smashes through the ship's railing and slams onto the deck, its teeth closing around him.

Just as he expected.

Already moving a safe distance from those horrid dagger-like teeth, he even anticipates the way the ship is going to pitch as the serpent's bulk slams onto the deck. Jeridan, by instinct, is able to keep from falling overboard, and comes out no worse than he was. Jak and Dia are not so lucky, and are pitched to the deck soundly; Jak rolling a bit before coming to a stop at the railing where it is still intact.

Valentia, seeing the monster come via the cannon shutter, braces herself and stays on her feet with some difficult.

Paige has no way of seeing the creature, no way of knowing what is to come. But she can feel it. She feels the chip rock just a bit, before the serpent slams into the deck. She grabs the wall, and holds on for dear life as the ship is tossed about. Enduring, despite a sudden ache in her arms, she lets go after the worst has ended.

(KAY! Init is: Kelne, (Paige), Dia, Jeridan. Jak has acted. Valentia delayed turn by default, and may act whenever. Paige's action may be posted at any time, and will happen when I say so.)

That had been a rather close call. Granted, if the serpent had actually succeeded in biting down on him, it would have seriously regretted it, but it would have been a painful experience for him, as well.

"You just don't know when to quit, do you?" he asked, completing the enchantment and firing off a lightning-enhanced bullet at the serpent's eye. Even if he missed, it was bound to strike the head at this range. Which would only make the snake even angrier, if at all possible. Still, he did make sure there was nobody potentially in the line of fire before taking the shot.

Meanwhile, he allowed his feelings of confidence in the outcome of the fight to permeate through the mental link. Someone who didn't know him well might suspect that such apparent overconfidence would lead to a careless mistake.

Something's attacking the ship.

Paige froze for a minute, glancing at the valves.

Something's attacking the ship!

She got to work with those valves, with a fury she herself didn't even know she had. She wanted the ship out of the water pronto, and then she'd go find out what the heck was attacking the ship she had put so much effort into.

Kelne's bullet slams into the things snout, and he may be disappointed to see it only draws a thin trickle of blood through its scales. However, the magic itself does its job admirably, causing the serpent to convulse in agony, crying out in pain.

However, the mental link fares far worse. Kelne can feel that despite the efforts of the group, despite the numerous wounds the beast has taken, it is not shaken. This becomes readily evident as it sends out a powerful mental imperative: Die! The force behind it is enough to close ruin the telepathic link between the two, and leave Kelne mildly dizzy.

Well, so much for the link. He'd certainly managed to get it angry, but to what extent it was still focused on him in particular was anybody's guess.

"You first," He said simply, backing off a little to give himself some space. Focusing through the dizziness, he pocketed his pistol and brought out his sword. Now that the serpent had obligingly gotten in close, it was likely the better weapon to employ. The plan was still in place, but a lot depended on how much the serpent cooperated, and how organised the cannon crews were.

"Well, since you asked so nicely," said a disembodied voice.

The translucent image of a brownish-red cat with a strange prosthetic tail dashed past Dia, gaining solidity as it rushed towards the serpent.

"I don't think your kind belongs here," said Meph to the serpent. "Perhaps you'd like a glimpse of home."

And with that, he leapt into the air above the serpent, executing a perfect backflip directly above the serpent. As he did, orange sparks rained down on the serpent, momentarily blinding it. When its vision cleared, it could see

...a vast sea stretched out before it, soft light filtering down into the depths and in its ears a distant song...

Mephistopholes landed perfectly on the ship's railing and turned back to watch the serpent.

Given the action that was going on around the ship, Valentia did the logical thing. Which is to say, the thing that she had come to this particular area of the ship to do. Which is to say, load cannons. As such, she promptly got to work. She would hardly be able to have a grand reunion with her beloved if the ship was destroyed by the giant serpent that was hanging in front of the cannon ports, after all.

Meph, and perhaps Dia, feel the illusion settle over the serpent. For now, it seems at least somewhat deluded by it, but the question remains of how well it can second-guess the illusion.

****

Paige finishes dealing with the valves and switches; now it is all a matter of time. However, someone's going to need to be taking care of piloting the ship, and by the sounds of things, most of the crew is below decks...

****

"Cannons two and three, give it the grapeshot!" Comes the voice of Smokey Jay over the perilous creaking of wood. Valentia, being at cannon three, helps load in small bits of iron into the cannon, her partner packing it in nice and tight.

"Angle 37 degrees, and fire!"

****

Those on the deck, when not working to avoid being bitten in twain, main notice that the airship's rotors are slowly and laboriously starting to turn...

Jak would have been disgusted at Jeridan's pathetic display, but he had more pressing concerns at hand.

Now he had a clear, reasonably immobile target in front of him there was no choice to be made. The Thunderbolt Pendant around his neck began to vibrate as it aided him in gathering together his next spell, which took the form of a focused torrent of lightning that leapt from his fingertips.

Trying to shake off its obvious pain, th serpent begins to draw itself back, coiling up.

Well, now was the time. Kelne had kept track of his location relative to his carpet, and now took the opportunity to step onto it.

The plan, put simply, was to overbalance the serpent or otherwise distract it into going back over the side of the ship. That would put it directly in front of the cannons, which would almost certainly be loaded by now. A couple of rounds at point-blank range ought to finish it.

With that in mind, he flew directly at the serpent's head, dodging sideways at the last second to bring his sword into line for a slashing strike at its neck, backed once again by the familiar lightning.

Uncle Pervy

Kelne finds, as he takes to the air, things do not always go as planned.

The serpent suddenly springs forward, covering much of the deck in the space of a second. His attack is completely thrown off, and the force of the monster's passage nearly knocks him off the carpet. He is able to recover his balance; Infinity has thrown worse aerial disasters at him.

Dia finds, happily, she is not the serpent's target. But, she does find that she is too close to its target, as one of its powerfully muscled fins slams into her torso, knocking her to the deck once more and leaving her gasping for breath.

Jak, however, finds that he is the serpent's intended target. He tries valiantly to move, to backpeddle away and dive aside. But never did it really register in his mind that it could move that fast.

Its teet tear into his torso and left arm, all but mangling the latter as his world becomes one of incarnate pain. He can feel himself falling away toward the deck. The pain somewhat fades, as his arm goes blessedly numb. Still, he and the others can see that a great deal of flesh from his arm missing, whilst his side bears gaping wounds as well.

(OOC: 21 Damage to Dia, 51 damage to Jak. Jak has survived his massive damage roll to remain conscious, but will be acting at a penalty. Paige is up. Also, to make my life easier, please post the exact tech/type of attack you are doing in an OOC Message.)

Monster on the deck? Check.

Mr. Snide and Ms. Dia down? Check.

Chance that it would probably hurt more people? Check.

Clean underwear? Probably not much longer.

Paige thought quickly, checking around her toolbelt. Finding what she needed in a pouch, she pulled the materials needed-

Or,rather, the single material.

She pulled the most jagged peice of scrap she could find, and hucked it at the beast's eye, trying to get it to scurry away. "G...Get off...M-my ship!"

Paige whips her hunk of what would have been a bit of extra reinforcement for the smoke vent, as she scurries away. Perhaps there is something of a professional knife-thrower in her, as it sails across the air and slams into the distracted serpent's eye! It does not pierce very deeply, falling away as the thing jerks from the impact, but the wound begins to weep blood.

Beside Dia, another creature begins to materialize. The deck, already strained under the Serpent's weight, creaks alarmingly as am immense scarlet-furred hound manifests into Gaera. Easily dwarfing the largest bull to dominate Igala's pastures, its three heads scan the deck, its tongues lolling out almost comically.

An arvilish, echoes a buzzing mental voice within Dia's mind, almost overpowering her thoughts. What interesting things you call me to fight. You sell yourself not lightly!

With that, it crosses the deck in a few bounds, as the Serpent tries to recover from being stabbed in the eye. It is hardly ready as three sets of jaws tear into its underbelly, rending scales and spilling blood across the deck.

Mwe hee hee, comes the voice in Dia's head, Join me!

The Ship is beginning to lurch a bit, with all the extra weight. As well, the Rotors are beginning to speed up. Soon enough, they should be at take-off speed. As for the Serpent, it is not doing quite so well anymore. The wounds are truly beginning to take a toll upon it, as it coils away from the Cerberus, bearing its fangs.
