"Keep y'hide down. You look like a pin cushin."

Petty once again trained his eyes on one of the bandits on the hill, selecting one with a bow and letting fly another arrow.

Assassin gritted his teeth in slight pain, taking a short step back.. but focused his attention to his sword arm. He could deal with the pain later.. for now, there was a job to be done.

He finally responded to the bandit's attack with a swift diagonal slash...

Idran materialised a few feet above Orlan and dropped like a stone. The resulting collision spent them both sprawling to the floor of the wagon, stunned.

The arrows proved to be barbed, and caused a fair bit of damage coming out through Jaeko's newly-healed skin. Although Idran's regenerative spell repaired some of it, it couldn't fix everything.

Petty's shot was thwarted by his target ducking behind a large tree at the last moment.

Back on the wagon, the arrival of Silvanus tilted the odds back to even. Unfortunately, his run of bad luck continued, a pair of clashes marking his arrival as he and his chosen adversary failed to land blows. Assassin had more luck, slashing his blade across his target's chest. Although severely wounded, the man kept his feet and even managed a return blow, opening up a gash on Assassin's leg.

With Orlan sprawled, Siolen launched a sharp kick at his head. Unfortunately, before she could land it, the wagon plunged into the woods. Designed for the open road, it took less than ten seconds for it to snag on an obstacle and come to a crashing halt. The occupants were sent flying, though Silvanus, still being airborne, avoided this fate.

Assassin didn't quite manage to get his feet under him and landed hard, inflicting further suffering on his poor abused shoulder. Idran, having recovered from his fall, managed to twist about in mid-air, landing lightly on his feet. Siolen crashed into a tree, and slumped to the ground.

There were similarly mixed results for the bandits. The one who'd been fighting Silvanus landed well, climbing back to his feet, but Assassin's opponent struck the ground headfirst, with a loud crack. From the angle of his neck, he wouldn't be getting up without the services of a necromancer. Orlan hit hard as well, taking the impact on a shoulder and rolling to his feet near the unconscious form of the wagon's other passenger.

The chocobos, warking in distress, tried in vain to pull themselves clear of the wrecked wagon's traces.

A final volley of crossbow bolts and fire sent the bandits on the left into retreat, which meant that their comrades would soon be facing twice the firepower. Some of the bandits on the right had likewise broken off, but glimpses could be caught of figures making for the wrecked wagon.

(6 damage to Jaeko from the arrows, the gift that just keeps on giving. 22 damage to Assassin from combat and falling damage. The crash survivors are no longer viable targets for those on the wagons.)

The sight of the bandits fleeing was enough to alleviate Petty's frustration for not hitting his mark. Turning his attention to the remaining half, he took aim yet again, adding a little holy magic to the arrow, just to be sure, and let it fly at a bandit.

Silvanus looked around at those being flung from the wagon, when he suddenly realized who was among them.

Shit, there goes my employer. And all the money I could have gotten from this.......... wait, I have an idea.

With this, Silvanus broke off combat, putting his blade away, and hustled over to Siolen. As quickly as he could, he took out one of the better healing potions he had bought, and proceeded to administer it to his fallen employer, hoping she'd get up as a result.

(Trying to administer one of the better healing potions to Siolen.)

IM: ...All right, then. She's harmed, but...Orlan probably saw my earlier spell...won't be expecting...

Idran gestures towards Orlan, yelling "Bomb!" Using a trick somewhat old for him, though, he casts Comet on the apparant traitor, hoping to catch him unawares.

Assassin forced himself into a standing position, nearly falling over in pain from the gash in his leg. As he moved his arms to hold tight against a more stable surface to his left or right, his battered shoulder screamed in agony.

Muttering, he recalled that he had bought a few Potions for just such an occassion. With this knowledge in mind, he removed one from his inventory, opened it, and quaffed it. He suspected that the battle was not quite over yet, and that this would be his last chance to heal up..

Watching Silvanus from where he was, Jaeko decided the best thing he could do right now was cover him. He simply readied his guns, preparing to shoot at anything that got close to Siolen or Silvanus.

Idran's comet crashed through the canopy and struck Orlan dead in the chest, knocking him off his feet. Amazingly, he managed to get out from under it in one piece, battered but basically intact. It didn't take a genius to work out that shrugging off a comet hit was not usual.

A pair of bandits emerged from the trees behind Orlan, staring at him in awe. Orlan snapped them out of it in short order. "Take him and go," he said, gesturing to the crumpled form at his side. The two hastened to comply, scooping the man up and hastening away.

The surviving bandit from the crash visibly weighed the odds, "I'll just cover their retreat, shall I?" he asked rhetorically, already moving to follow the retreating pair. He obviously hadn't signed on to die.

Orlan let him go wordlessly, turning his attention to the offending mage. Idran barely managed to duck aside as the man covered the distance between them in a few short strides, swinging his weapon in a vicious arc.

Assassin's healing potion proved quite effective, his wounds closing up swiftly. There was still a lingering ache, but he was in much better shape now. Silvanus could see the potion taking effect, closing up Siolen's wounds. Her eyelids fluttered slightly, but she didn't seem inclined to wake just yet.

Jaeko kept a good eye on the area surrounding the two, but no bandits seemed to be entering it. Meanwhile, a full volley struck at the remaining bandits. Petty could see his own arrow drop one of the bandits, and a couple of others fell. Andre didn't contribute this time, perhaps having exhausted his reserves.

(Assassin's potion restores 43 damage, putting him on 65HP. Idran, meanwhile, is down to 20 MP.

And with that, I'll be back next week.)

With Siolen apparently taken care of, Silvanus turned his attention to the man attacking Idran. The fact that Silvanus recognized who he was only fueled his anger.

Rather than draw his blade, however, he lunged at Orlan from behind, hoping simply to bring him down.

(Trying to tackle Orlan. Dunno how you're resolving this, though.....)

Assassin recalled the fact that the man that he had tried his luck against, Orlan, had in fact turned traitorous.

He supposed that, since the bandits seeemed to have been lessened in number, the wolf in their mist would have to be disposed of next.

Silently checking on his form once more, he concentrated and dematerialized once more, rematerializing as closely as he could to the last place he had seen Orlan, somewhere around the main wagon.

As Idran dodges Orlan's sword swipe, he continues thinking about what to do.

IM: Orlan's too close to use my boomerang...have to use another...hopefully, it'll work on him

After going through his various options, he decides to attempt a Hold spell on Orlan, despite the fact that he is nearly drained magically.

Petty simply fired off another arrow, casting a glance around at the first wagon afterwards. When the other half of the archers retreated, he'd be able to help them.

Jaeko simply took aim with both guns at any bandit dumb enough to show himself while fleeing, taking any shots he could, waiting for them to slip away a bit before letting his guard down.

Both Petty and Jaeko's shots struck, dropping their respective targets. Between a fireball and a volley of crossbow bolts, those who didn't die soon turned and ran for it. The wagons slowed their pace, turning towards the wrecked wagon.

Idran found his hold spell slipping aside from Orlan, somehow unable to find purchase. Silvanus had more luck, slamming into the traitor's back and bearing him to the ground. His quarterstaff went flying, but he writhed in Silvanus's grip. The dragon had him, but now what was he going to do with him?

It was this scene which Assassin beheld as he rematerialised.

As Idran attempts his Hold spell, feeling it failing to affect Orlan, his mind continues to churn out possibilities.

IM: Basically drained...still too close for boomerang...no other...

Then, he sees Orlan's staff go flying.

IM: ......*mental shrug* Well, I might get lucky twice in a row.

Thus, he decides to jump for it, as Silvanus holds Orlan to the ground.

Silvanus appreciated the fact that his luck worked with him for once. Now he had his chance.

While trying to get a better grip on Orlan, Silvanus leaned so that his face was closer to Orlan's ear, and said, "Okay, tell us what your plan was in turning against us, traitor."

Assassin took a step forward, studying the scene.

He kept his blade in a readied position, if it had not been already. This Silvanus certainly looked strong enough to hold down the traitorous man, but one could never be certain..

Petty hopped off the wagon, feeling invincible. He'd been left unscathed so far, and had earned a few more notches on his bow.

"You okay?" he called back at Jeako, knowing the answer would probably be something along the lines of 'No, you idiot,' as he set off towards the caravan, arrow readied and the archer on the look out for any nasty surprises.

Jaeko looked in Pettys direction, shoving the shades over his eyes to rest atop his head, and rubbed his temples a bit. "I'm fine, all things considered. Now what the hell's going on?" Pushing his shades back down over his eyes, Jaeko simply looked around for anyone who was injured, and failing that, any bandit that was still alive, so that he could get a bit of information out of him.

Jaeko nodded, giving up his search in favor of helping his fellow ranged-fighter. Hopping down from the wagon, he shoved his used guns back in their holsters, replacing them with a pair of fresh ones. However, he was aware that too much more of this and he'd soon be out of ammo. Making a mental note to conserve it, he raised his pistols and started walking. "Let's get a move-on. Best to not let anything get taken."

"My plan? Hah." Orlan made a last attempt to get loose, then apparently decided to give it up as a lost cause. "As if I ever had a choice in the matter." His voice was laden with resignation and bitterness. By this time, Siolen was awake, if not up to moving much, and was listening intently.

As Jaeko and Petty approached the wagon, they passed a fallen bandit. While this wasn't unusual, an idle glance from Jaeko discerned that this one wasn't lying in a pool of blood. In fact, there was nothing to indicate he'd been hit at all.

What are you waiting for, Silvy? Get this guy talking - we don't have all day!
You are so damn impatient, Fabelia.

"Then tell us who forced you into this." Silvanus kept his voice bitter, and started to move a hand closer to Orlan's throat.

Jaeko looked to Petty, the motioned twards the bandit. "Hold on a second. Got something to do real quick". Aiming his guns at the bandit, he nudged the man with his shoe a little. "I'd suggest you get up, unless you want me to ventilate you."

As Silvanus interrogates Orlan, Idran heads over to Siolen, quarterstaff in hand. Noticing she has come back into consciousness, he kneels down, setting the staff besides him.

"Are you alright? I do have an additional potion, if you feel it necessary."

He reaches for one of the potions purchased earlier, taking out a lesser restorative, as most of her obvious wounds seem to have healed from Silvanus's efforts prior.

"I'll be alright," Siolen said, nodding to Idran and standing somewhat shakily.

"Why not? It's not like I have anything left to lose." Orlan seemed completely unperturbed by Silvanus's implied threat. "His name -" The man's voice cut off abruptly, his eyes widening. His body, in Silvanus's grip, became suddenly heavier, and his skin took on a pale shade.

Though Orlan's mouth worked, no words came out, and inside a minute, he'd been turned into a marble statue.

"Well, fuck," the bandit said expressively, upon hearing Jaeko's words. He certainly didn't waste any time in getting to his feet, keeping his hands where they could be seen. Apparently he was no stranger to capture.

After listening to Siolen's response, he reaches out to help her up. As he helps her stand, he hears Orlan begin to answer Silvanus's query. He looks up, just in time to see the transformation begin. Checking to make sure Siolen won't fall over from the action, he kneels down to retrieve the quarterstaff, while looking around for a mage or creature that may be causing this petrification.

Well, fuck.

"And just when I thought I had him," Silvanus said as he let go of Orlan. Then he burst into a fit of rage, slamming his fist against the leg of the Orlan statue. "FUCKING GODDAMN SON OF A BITCH!"

Getting to his feet, he turned to the last standing bandit, and put a hand to his normal sword. "Your turn," Silvanus began angrily, pointing his free left hand at the bandit. "Tell us who's responsible for this." During the last statement, he pointed to the Orlan statue.

Assassin folded his arms, turned his head to the sky, and let out a slight sigh. He had been anticipating some great battle to finish off this encounter, and instead there had been an anticlimactic betrayal of sorts.

Not entirely what he had been anticipating. But, at least, the bandits had been dealt with. Siolen, their payer, was apparently in good shape - now only the issue of what exactly was going on remained.

Resheathing his blade, he decided to turn his attention to the bandit that the others were now looking towards.

He waited to see what the man or woman would have to say before passing comment or judgment..

Idran's search was in vain. There didn't seem to be anyone anywhere near them.

Though he was some distance from the edge of the woods, the bandit had a good enough view to know what Silvanus was talking about. "The mage. It'd have to be the mage," he said quickly, then clapped a hand over his mouth, eyes widening in horror at the thought that he too might be turned into a statue.

Siolen, for her part, glared at the stony form of Orlan. At length, she looked away, and began scanning the landscape.

"Tell us more about the mage," Silvanus ordered. He kept his hand on the blade, as if still threatening injury to the bandit.

Silvanus was, obvious to say, not a very happy draconian.

I am getting to the bottom of this if it kills me.
What if it kills him?
He doesn't matter to me. I just need to know his employer, and after that, I don't care.

The bandit's eyes darted from person, seeking an escape. They found none. Still, the prospect of suffering the same fate as Orlan kept his mouth shut. For all of five seconds.

"I don't know anything about him. It was just the Boss who dealt with him. The only time the rest of us saw him was when he opened the portals." So far, he didn't seem to be turning into a statue, and the relief on his face was palpable.

"The portals opened all over the place," the bandit said, "He and Jin figured out where they should go ahead of time."

"And where," Siolen asked, in tones of ice, "Is my husband?"

From the look on the bandit's face, he hadn't been looking forward to that question. Then again, he probably hadn't been looking forward to any of the questions.

"I don't know. I swear. The mage wanted him for something, and we had to get him or he'd shut us down." With the threat of imminent violence somewhat lessened, a trace of bitterness came into his voice, "The mage was supposed to deal with anyone who got in our way, but..."

More dire than we thought, eh, Silvy?
I guess. I thought guarding caravans was hard, but now our employer's husband's gone?
This is your chance at a bonus, you know.
Quiet, I'll handle this.

The whole situation had made Silvanus a little angry. Thinking over what this bandit had to say, he began to suspect the bandit was lying. Thus Silvanus took a more direct route.

He telepathed to the bandit, "At least tell me you know where this 'mage' hides, and about Jin as well. And don't lie to us or your life will be forfeit."

Assassin sighed. "Nothing is ever simple, it would seem."

Dusting himself off and checking the surrounding area once more, he turned his attention to his allies (except for Silvanus, who seemed to be silently interrogating the remaining bandit).

"Do you suppose we'll still be paid?"

Jaeko, leaving the others to interrogate the bandit better, as it would seem a bullet to the kneecaps wasn't needed, simply shrugged at Assassins question and began reloading and reholstering his guns.
