A Job in Riva

Unread postby The Dark Gun » Sun May 18, 2003 9:54 pm

*He had done his best to spread the word as far as he could, this lord hoped that he had gathered the right people. There would only be one chance at this. The poster he had sent about carried all the details they would need. It described the location, the job that needed doing, everything, except the exact pay. Because of this many people ignored it entirely, but some followed the attached map and arrived near a city in Riva. At this point the instructions were VERY clear. They were to meet a ways outside the city and wait until nightfall before entering.*

*Maxwell eyed this point of the directions skeptically.*

"Well... It's what they say, I guess I'll just wait here then."

*He shrugged and made himself as comfortable as he could on the grass. It wouldn't be long before nightfall.*

"I wonder if anyone else will show up to apply for this job tonight, it'd be nice for some actual conversation."

About five feet from Maxwell a striped Rivan Hare stood on its hindquarters and peered at him curiously. It sniffed the air in his direction before fall to all fours and galloping off. If the incident left him confused then he would soon be more perplexed by the seeming sudden appearance of a young dark-skinned elf with silver-blue hair beside him.

She looked down at him for a moment and then to the distant city. The hare came up to her ankles and grazed. "Are you here for the job?" She asked frankly.

*He looks over at her, apraisingly.*

"Why yes, yes I have. Odd directions, don't you think?"

*He smiles, pleased to have someone to talk to.*

IM: This should make the wait a little shorter...

Mahou didn't answer him immediately. She seemed content to study the city for a moment.

"Maybe. It depends on what you mean by odd."

Another person observed the scene from within the shadows. It seemed that others had arrived before him. An ideal opportunity to assess those he might well be working with.

He would prefer, of course, to work alone. It was seldom that he encountered any potential partner who wouldn't slow him down. And, working alone, no inconvenient questions of how to divide the fee arose.

Still, the man who had contacted him had said that others were being sought for this job, and Zorek was resigned to the prospect of working with them, if not happy about it. They could always be ditched if they became too much of an inconvenience.

Nodding to himself, the assassin selected an out of sight location from which he could listen in on the conversation, and settled in to wait.

The striped hare suddenly sits up and pauses, sensing a very much larger predator in the area.

Moments later, the grass parts before a Naga. A rather large Naga. A human-sized torso is suspended atop her snake section, the top of her head coming to an even seven feet off the ground. Fifteen whole feet of snake trail behind the main column of her body.

She glances to the two others, then folds her arms over the front of her jherkin, tongue flicking out twice, tasting the air, scenting them, the rabbit, the terrain and plants about, everything in the area.

Her eyes do not point at them precisely- her eyesight is keyed to motion. But the look in those yellow-green slitted orbs says she KNOWS there are three there, a man, a hare, and a dark elf.

Her arms fold over the front of her leather jherkin, the scimtar hilts behind either shoulder shifting slightly. One hand rises for a moment, brushing the tips of some of her brown hair.

"Good day to you. I sssuppossse you are here for the job propossssed?"

*He watched the newcomer as she approached.*

"Indeed, we are."

*He turns back to the other arrival.*

"Well, it just strikes me as odd that we're supposed to creep around the city limits until nightfall."

*He shrugs*

"We're here to help protect this place, not to steal from them..."

Mahou looked the naga over and flicked her hand. The hare seemed all to glad to obey her command and hop away into the night. The mercenary remained silent then looked to the north, musing to herself. It was the first naga she had ever seen but she was not shocked to see one. Not so close to Hell's Peak. Even so, not much shocked her.

"I doubt that this kind of set-up is an ambush of some kind but I would not throw it out as a possibility. Time will dispel such questions."

"Yes, and we should find out soon enough. Night rapidly approaches."

He looked out at the fading sun, and shifted from his seat, standing and stretching slightly.

"We'll find out about this job soon enough, I suppose."

*And, shortly thereafter, the sun dropped all the way below the horizon, and, after a short wait, Max decides it's time to move in towards the city.*

"This is dark enough, I hope, no point in camping out here any longer."

(OOC: What a cue.)

Just as the sun dropped fully below the horizon, another being began to quickly make his way toward the city. He had been waiting to do this, but his condition had prevented him from going earlier. Sunlight didn't exactly like the nezujin, and despite every precaution he could have taken, he knew that it could fail and place him where he couldn't get out of the sun in time.

Khoray hated the fact that he couldn't at least get outside during the day, as nighttime made travelling all the more difficult. Even so, night travelling made him less likely to be noticed. It was with this in the back of his mind that the nezujin vampire made haste. There was money behind this one - something Khoray knew he could use. But whether he could make it there in time was another story. And how much he was to receive was unknown as well.

After a short while, Khoray was able to make it to the city limits. He began breathing heavily, as even vampires tended to tire out after running for quite a lot.

(OOC: To just sum up the last bit: Khoray's JUST arrived. I just hope this entry is feasible....)

The naga nods. "I concur."

With that, she lays her entire body low, and, as swiftly and smoothly as any snake, though perhaps a bit quieter, she slithers through the grasses, making a long, winding path more or less directly to the city.

The greens of her scales and the browns of her skin, jherkin, and scimtar sheathes allow her to blend in easily to the ground in the night, and before long she is well-nigh invisible, an occasional faint whisper of grass on scale the only sign of her presence to those not already aware of her.

Zorek nodded to himself. No sense in delaying the meeting, and certainly not in allowing these others to arrive significantly before him. That would put him at a disadvantage in the coming negotiations, something which he took great care to avoid.

Moving silently, the assassin set off along the route which had been described to him. As with the naga, few who did not already know he was there would detect him.

*There were four main gates, one on each side of the town. Each gate was gaurded, but the advertisements themselves were to serve as passes to enter.*

*Max showed the advertisement to the gaurd and the gate was opened and he was allowed in, the gate then closed behind him, as the gaurds waited for the next person to show their pass.*

IM: Awfully cautious folks around here... I suppose it's because of whatever trouble that one would need mercenaries for...

Although it would be easy enough for him to bypass the guards altogether, Zorek elected to show his pass to gain entry. While sneaking in might be a good demonstration of his skills, it might not be received well by the one who had issued the advertisement.

Shifting so her torso is upright, the Naga approaches one of the gates, and shows her copy of the advertisement to a guard.

He doesn't seem to notice.

"Hey." She says. "I am here for thissss job. Will you pleathe let me insssside the sssity?"

The man stands rigidly. "We will not allow monsters in the city."

Zail regards him for a moment. "Excuthe me, but am I threatening to kill you?"

"Well, no..."

"Am I rampaging uncontrollably?"

"no..."

"Am I clothed, dessssent, and acting rationally?"

"Well, yes..."

"Am I asking nisssely?"

"Yes..."

"Am I doing anything that would be conssssidered dangerouth?"

"No..."

"Will you pleathe let me in, then?"

"I'm sorry, but we don't allow monsters in the city."

Zail frowns. This could take a while.

That is not a good thing.

Khoray thought it was a bit odd for guards to be so tightly guarding the town. Just how dangerous was this, going in here? And even more, why was there so many advertisements about this lone job going around?

Luckily, Khoray had managed to get his hands on one of the advertisements. He made up his mind that, rather than sneak in, he'd at least try to pass himself off as a normal mercenary.

He showed the pass to one of the guards, hoping against hope that said guard wouldn't notice more than said pass.

*After a short time of the banter between the Naga and the gaurds, Max became irritated.*

"You wanted people to help you with whatever your probelm is, and so we've come. Being rude isn't going to do you any good."

"But I can't let that thing in here!" The guard objected.

"Let me think here, shall we? The advertisement says it acts as a pass for anyone, anyone at all. Apparently whoever is in charge around here printed them out, sooo... You can take it up with him later. Right now you're going to let the Naga in."

"B... But..."

"Do it."

*Reluctantly, the gaurd let the naga through. The others, however, got by with only a nervous, and perhaps agitated glare.*

Khoray mentally felt relieved. He'd only gotten a slight stare - a lot less than what he normally got. Whether it was out of uncaringness or desperation Khoray didn't know, though.

And frankly, he didn't care, as he had gotten this far.

He now turned his attention to the job at hand, trying to recall off the top of his head just what it was he had come to do. Even if he had had the advertisement moments before, he had been looking mostly at the directions to arrive at the city.

*Having also been examining the advertisement, Max looked back at the others.*

"Looks like we're supposed to go to their Lord's palace at the center of town, hopefully the gaurds at the gate there won't give us a hassle."

*He headed down the realitively straight street ahead of them, it was not that large of a city and it would not take them long to get there. The stores and and other houses were generally dark, with the exception of a few, still brightly lit pubs and inns. The city, although small, seemed at least mildly prosperous.*

"I have no idea, hopefully our employer won't be as nasty as his gate gaurds. This is apt to be intense, as security around here is really tight, like they're expecting an attack at any moment... But then I've heard that Rivans are suspicious folk by nature."

*They walked on, unchallenged, until they reached another wall around the manor, however, a simple flashing of the advertisements gained them access, and an escort to the presance of the lord himself.*

"Thank you for coming on such rapid notice." He said, smiling at them as they entered. "I have discovered what I believe to be a growing problem not far from here, a band of militiants I fear. I, personally, do not have enough soldiers to both defend the town and go out after them, and my reports to the capitol have been ignored in front of what they believe to be more pressing business."

*He ran a hand through his hair.*

"I was hoping you could go to their lair and either bring back proof that there is some sort of major organization, so that I can get help, or route them yourselves if they turn out to be only a small band. Can you help me?"

*He looked Mahou blankly.*

"Dragoons? Granted, it is possible, but unlikely. The few scouts that managed to return to me would certainly have noticed if the militiants were dragoons, and this does not seem to be the case. Likely, this is why I am denied aid from the capitol, they seem to fail to realize that a non-dragoon threat could exist."

Blasted rebels.... don't they ever learn?

Khoray was a bit upset that his supposed companions on this 'job' had already stolen all his questions. He thus took this time to look them over.

And I thought I was bizarre... in comparison to them I'd probably be normal. This thought ran through Khoray's head silently during all of this.

Zorek, having slipped in with the main group, chose this moment to put in a few words, "So. Essentially, you know practically nothing of the foe save that he exists. Do you at least know the area in which he operates?"

Thus far, he was not particularly impressed by the job. He was being asked to perform the sort of routine task which would have ordinarily been carried out weeks before calling in a professional such as himself.

*The lord flashed an apologetic smile.*

"Of course we know that much, like I said, I have had some success with scouts, just not as much as I would like. If you choose to accept this job, I will make a map available to you."

*Max frowned, he usually liked to be better informed than this before a job, but it seemed safe enough.*

*The Lord spoke once more.*

"As for proof, the best outcome would be your capture of one of them, however, as this might be difficult, try to come back with any writting documents you can, or with a convincing report of what you've seen. If you note any prominant symbols, try to bring back a copy, or original of one of those."
