Fight!

Unread postby KraKeN » Fri Nov 22, 2002 7:49 pm

Kraken staggered to his feet, there was blood on his hands and a constant fuzz in his ears. It was then he realized he couldn't hear a thing, looking up in panic he saw five figures approach him who were most certain not his friends. Drawing his sword he backed away flailing desperately at the creatures.

How effetive the power of suprise can be, and the infalmibilty of the harpies clothing was certainly a suprise to them! One caught the full brunt of the blast, and didn't survive. Next to her another harpy rolled towards the heroes, both wings burnt off and back smoldering. After a few death spasms she did not move. One managed to come off not so badly, a slight burn on her side, but her clothes were on fire and she was rolling on the floor trying to put out the flames. One had had the fortune to be a second ahead of the flames, and ignored the screams of her sisters as she ran towards the heroes, and of the last there was no sign, as she had managed to stop at the sound of Blaze's voice, and was stuck on the other side of the flames.

With the charging hapry the group got its first glance at its attackers. She was tall for female, almost six foot, and appeared human with only a couple of discerning features. First were the two leathery, sinewy, bat-like wings sprouting from her shoulderblades, currently tucked in to minimise air resistance and to make them a harder target. The second feture were her (and it was a most definate she) hands, far more elongated than normal human hands each finger was at least twice as long as that of any human, and all four fingers ended in a wickedly sharp looking claw, while the thumb had no claw, but a normal nail. Her leathery skin clung tightly to her light frame, showing her bone structure through leathery skin. The asthetic side of these hideous monsters was lost however on Kilra who, at the head of the group, found herself the reciepient of a charging thrust by the harpy.

(OOC - Roll call please so I can work out order of combat!)

Kilra brought her left hand blade, Silence, upwards and to the side, attempting to knock the thrust aside, as if it were just another sword aimed at her. She hadn't been pitched in battle against such creatures before, and thus stayed her right hand, hoping that her defensive action would succeed, and readying herself in case it didn't.

He was taken surprise just as much as anyone.

In response to the harpie attack, Xander jumped off the horse and put his right hand over his holster. He pulled out his revolver loaded with 6 large bullets, preparing for battle. Then...he aimed, hoping to get a clear shot at whatever that would threat his safety. With his left hand he swiped his hair and sweat out of his face.

"Heh...now for some action!"

(I'm pretty sure we said we had, but it matters not. Can somebody give Kate a friendly push in the direction of this thread?)

(Edit: *clicks pause button* yes I'm sorry but the rp is once again paused. I think Kate's got finals or something but until everybody either IM's me on AIM or emails me at gusgolden@aol.com to say they're ready to continue this rp aint going nowhere.)

Kilra's sword blocked the harpies swing perfectly...but this is an arm not a sword! Against a human such a forcefull collision would have sliced through muscle and possibly even bone, yet the harpy's tough skin was only just slit, and a thin trail of dark blood was illuminated by Blaze's raging inferno still burning in the cavemouth. The harpy hissed but continued its charge past Kilra into the middle of the group...and then realised it was surrounded.

Meanwhile the flames seemed to be curling towards the group, as if a powerful wind was rushing into the cave. Slowly they dimmed...but still prevented passage.

(OOC - Order of combat: Xander, Janice, Ara, Kilra, Blaze, the Harpy....Aya , Maskovar and Kraken are all still stunned.)

(OOC - Please please please please please please please please please please please post! I know that this has been drawn out so I plan to skip the intervening encounters I had planned and get straight to the main battle and climax...if you survive this.)

*gives the RP some life support*

Unread postby RebelKitsune » Tue Jul 01, 2003 5:14 pm

Janice, who by now was starving, cringed at the pangs of hunger which constantly came and went, each one stronger than the last as the feeling wore her patience rather thinly. Up until now she was only thinking about the hurting inside, but the moment she saw Kilra being attacked, she gathered all her strength, and got onto all fours, shifting to full wolf form, pretty much the same as she was, black fur, red eyes, scruffy fur...

Janice let out a deep and guttural growl, her ears folding back and tail just hovering above the ground as she readied herself to attack. She burst into a light trot, then built up her speed as she drew closer to the harpy, snarling slightly to herself as she vented all her frustration caused by hunger towards the enemy.

(Just making a follow up here, not an attack. Janice was quite far into the cave, so this was necessary for her to make it in time, i guess. *sits and waits for Smartz to post*)

Xander twirled his gun and looked for the Harpy. When he finally got it in his sights, he aimed for its wings.

If I shot its wings, thought Xander, I can make it less airborne, giving the others more of a chance to get a hit at it...

And with the completion of that thought, he gave a shot for one of its wings.

Now here's an interesting thing about harpies. It is very hard for their bipedial, thin frames to support flight unaided and so they come to rely on using their wings to harness wind currents and so forth, preferring to glide than to actually fly. Thus, in order to sense the subtle movements of hot air and so for, their wings are covered in nerve endings, all of them near the skin. Thus Xander's well aimed shot (which managed to puncture both of the creature's wings) cause the harpy to shreik with pain and fear, and then crumple to the ground, holding herself and shaking slightly in absolute pain. The harpy did not have her sisters to aid her this time but she was closer to the heroes and so many of them found themselves clutching their ears. Luckily none were effected strongly enough to be even dazed. However the screams masked the rising howl of the wind as the flames in the tunnel mouth fladed to embers, throwing the silhouettes of five figures against the walls of the cave mouth as they drew closer to the group.

(Janice's turn of action...she can almost certainly smell the approaching group.)

Janice, regardless of the harpy being dead, or nearly so, jumped onto the crippled body, and bit into the flesh, driven wild by her hunger. She bit into the flesh, and fed herself on whatever meat she could get a hold of. Her meal, however, was not left undisturbed, as she soon spotted, then smelt the group past the smouldering embers. She reared up, and growled, her blood-ridden fangs showing up against her black fur. Without thinking, she dashed, then jumped at the figure on her right, aiming her jaws for his neck, attempting to end its life as quickly as possible so that she may satisfy her hunger.

There was a screech as Janice's momentum brought another harpy to the ground. As she tried to get a clean bite at madly struggling creature three of the four remaining shapes hesitated for a moment, then moved to their comerades aid. The final figure was taller than the others, and had no wings. Neither did the figure appear to have legs but a single tail which protruded from the back of the creature's cloak. A hiss came from within the hood and a scaly head pulled it back from the head it had loosely clung to. A mass of tangled hair that seemed to move of it's own ability was freed and started to coil and curl and hiss. The creature had a single band of silk around its head that covered its eyes. For those who had heard stories of such a creature they would know immediately what it was. A medusa stood before the group, it's petrifying glare the stuff of legends. It slowly reached towards the silk band.

(Ara's turn. Luckily there's very low light so it's only a 25% chance that you actually see the medusa's eyes. A chance that can be decreased should you choose to take steps to avoid them. Kilra and Blaze can both get turns in before anything else happens.)

"Shit! If that's what I think it is..." Ara crouched to the ground quickly, muttering an incantation under her breath, the stones upon the ground before her rising and reshaping at her will, forming a humanoid rocky figure a few more feet higher than Ara herself, stout and stocky.

"Let's see it try to turn this to stone...heh!"

Upon the entrance of the Medusa, Kilra had taken a step back, a soft chant finding it's way to her lips. However, seeing the golem emerge between her and the monster changed her priorities.

Swords raised and ready, she moved to Janice's aid, striking out at the harpies preparing to attack.

Blaze also new what the creature was, and unlike Kilra he was unwilling to trust a golem to prevent it turning its gaze on someone.

He levelled his pistol at the medusa's head and squeezed the trigger.

Seems to be back on its feet now

Unread postby Justice Augustus » Tue Jul 08, 2003 12:17 pm

The harpy had known from the moment she was born to the grund that she was almost certainly about to die. She had put up a good struggle but eventually the inevitable happened and blood began to soak the fur around Janice's mouth. The harpy fell still as Janice continued to tear into her flesh. The other three harpies drew closer, and prepared to strike when they heard Kilra's light footsteps. Not even the drow went unheard, despite her species ability for stealth.
Two of them whirled around as Kilra's twin blades darted forward, and then both lept nimbly in opposite directions. One harpy escaped Kilra's hastily changed swing but the other had a deep gash across her thigh. Both harpies turned nimbly in middair, their wings flapping madly, and pounced back. This was clearly a practiced method of theirs, designed to quickly eliminate a single, charging opponent. But the wounded harpy had jumped a fraction of a second later than her comerade, and had a weaker jump, giving Kilra an opportunity.
Meanwhile the third harpy reached Janice, gilding slightly. She moved slowly in order to create as little sound as possible and quietly raised one hand, talons ready.

Meanwhile Blaze's shot was not perfectly accurate. Maybe the medusa had slightly ducked her head or maybe it was the darkness, but his shot only grazed her left temple. However it did shoot straight into the creature's hair, and a few snakes flew loose, their bodies completely severed in two. The medusa screamed and clutched at her head, forgetting about the band of cloth for a moment.

Further back in the cave Aya, Kraken, and Maskovar all got to their feet grogily. They all had a slight ringing in their ears but had recovered sufficiently to return to the fight. Kraken, unfortunately, could still hear nothing in his left ear.

(Order of combat is the same but with Maskovar, then Aya, then Kraken going after Janice. The medusa and harpies all go after Blaze's next go. So it's Xander, Janice, Maskovar, Aya, Kraken, Ara, Kilra, Blaze, the Harpys and Medusa.)

"Ah shit! A medusa....haven't really seen one of those, but I know what not to do: look at it. So much going on at once..."

He had 2 options: take care of the harpies attacking his teammates, which were probably halfdead anyways, or start on the medusa which is a threat all in itself. He still had a few bullets left in his chanber, so he didn't need to worry about reloading, but the shots need to be well placed and effective.

Then he noticed a harpy going after Janice, the "wolf-girl" Xander thought in his head. "Dammit all....the medusa has to wait." And with that he shot at the attacking harpy hopefully to falter its gliding assault.

(A shot at the Harpy attacking Janice)

Xander took careful aim, and let a bullet fly. Despite the dark it hit it's target perfectly, and the harpy was dead before it could even start its swipe at Janice, its brains decorating the cave wall, floor, and celing. The harpy's body fell to the ground, knocking Janice with enough force to make her stumble off her feast.

eep

Janice yelped loudly, rolling over as she was struck by the dead body and getting back onto her feet quickly, reared up and ready to attack her aggressor, growling gutturally. Upon realising that the Harpy was dead, she looked at Xander, her red eyes gleaming in the little light there was in the cave. Although she could not exactly express it, she seemed grateful to him, and Xander could tell just by her posture as her eyes met his.

Soon after, though, she returned her attention to what was important, and, now that she had tasted blood, she only craved more. More, to satisfy her hunger that, although eased a little, it still pained her, giving her that extra edge of bloodlust. She growled again, a little quieter, and bounded past one of the harpies so that she was behind the medusa. She knew well and good what she was up against, and she didn't take any risks.

From her vantage point, she leant downwards, concentrating, and through her, an inexplicable force tried to manipulate the natural world that surrounded them. Thick vines started to sprout at the medusa's feet in an attempt to immobilise the beast.

Maskovar rose grogily to his feet, running one finger around the inside of his ear as his hearing slowly reurned. He gazed around the cave looking at all the various shapes and trying to figure out who was who. He immediately recognised the figure of the medusa, and cursed under his breath. He then saw what Janice was attempting to do and closed his eyes, concentrating on the magics encouraging the vies to grow. He added what little power he had to hers, and the vines entangled themselves around one of the medusa's feet.

Kraken struggled to his feet, in his left ear he could hear nothing, gazed around groggilly and saw the medusa. He saw also that for the moment it couldn't move, he quickly pulled his crossbow up to his shoulder and fired at the medusa's chest.
