<span style="font-family:comic sans ms; color:navy;">Layne spit up some blood. For the second time that day.

"This is getting tired..."

He knew he didn't have enough strength to protect himself, so he decided to at least make his last seconds of consciousness count.

He pulled out the dagger he found on his way to this place.

OK, blood's REALLY not my thing, but maybe this thing will help end this...

He looked for something, ANYTHING that resembled a phrylactery... and if he didn't find it, he'd just plunge it into the guy's chest... if he could get close enough... and he didn't hurt himself too badly.

He didn't know if this was the right thing to do... but he had to at least try.

(Stab to the lich. If not phrylly thingy, then the stomach. And yes, I know there are major disadvantages.)</span>

Layne was unable to find a true phylactery on Storm Eye. This led him to stab the dracolich squarely in the chest, putting him less than a foot from the ice slick Jeff had created.

To Layne's surprise, the dagger almost instantly sheathed itself in flame upon sinking into Storm Eye's chest. The combination of the stab and the flame caused Storm Eye to sink to the ground and start to crumble.

"This is not done yet!" Storm Eye managed to yell before his whole body collapsed into dust, leaving a small ring and a bizarre-looking emerald katana.

(Storm Eye is effectively neutralized for the battle.)

Zotacthant, not being too bright, believed Damon was the one taking out Storm Eye, and this led him to attempt a tail stab on Damon. The kitsunejin, however, was simply too swift for the osyluth, easily avoiding the strike.

(Elijah's turn.)

Eager to retaliate and defend his comrade, Elijah dashed towards Zotacthant, his tail arched and posed to strike.

Zotacthant was able to deflect Elijah's tail on the first stab, but Elijah's tail just kept on coming. The osyluth could not evade all the stabs in time, and got hit directly by the other two.

Damon, meanwhile, realized just how direly Darrith was in trouble. Manipulating his demonic energy, Damon was able to restore the draconian to fighting condition, though not as good as before.

(Elijah dealt 47 damage. Even though Kelne is away, I'm going to wait a bit at least before running his turn, because my brain isn't exactly at its best.)

Your concern is touching.

Unread postby Kelne » Thu Jun 12, 2003 5:05 am

Jeff's plan at this point was simple. Distract the hell out of them. Fire burst from his fingertips, streamers flying off in random directions before exploding in an impressive, though harmless, display.

One down, two to go. He'd figured one thing right, at least. Storm Eye had absolutely no sense of humour.

Unfortunately, neither Agolas nor Zotacthant paid any attention to Jeff's fireworks display, focusing more on who they were going against.

Agolas calmly slipped two arrows out of his quiver and drew his bow back, focusing on Damon. Releasing the two arrows, his aim was true, and one arrow sank deep into Damon's stomach, while the other went through his shoulder, causing him to kneel down in pain.

Walter, witnessing this, leapt high and tried to slam his staff against Agolas's skull, but the marrash was far too quick, easily evading the staff.

Meanwhile, Darrith, who had just stood up, viewed his options. He was feeling a bit weak, and his allies were badly hurt.... this led him to put his hands on the ground. Then suddenly, his draconic body turned into a four-legged red dragon, about as high at the shoulder as he was tall, but much longer. The chain that had been around his arm was still there, now around a front forelimb.

When he finished, he looked back at Elijah and said, "Wasn't there something in that room earlier? Maybe that'll help us here!"

(Damon took 61 damage. Jeff's fireworks had no effect.

And despite who Darrith was talking to, it's Layne's turn.)

<span style="font-family:comic sans ms; color:navy;">Layne was short of breath. He didn't have much fight left in him.

"Got enough in me for one good shot... better make it count..."

He pointed his staff at Agolas. At its end, a ball of lightning appeared, growing in intensity till it was a pulsating blue ball of light.

He reared back, and shoved the sphere at the marrash, crying the name of his cantrip...

"STATIC PULSE!"</span>

(OOC: Just so you know, I remember Elijah carrying the staff out with him.)

"Yeah, that staff!" Darrith yelled back.

Meanwhile, Layne found, to his horror, that his attempt at frying Agolas wasn't effective. He practically had little left that he could use.

Zotacthant, holding his tail, then came up close to Walter. He drew the stinger back, letting go of the tail as he did this, and then, despite his target's efforts, stung Walter in the shoulder, going through his ring mail, and injecting poison there. Walter felt himself becoming far weaker as the poison started to take effect.

(Layne's spell is resisted. Walter is hit for a total of 35 damage. Elijah's turn.)

(-_- whoops, yes he did appearently)

Elijah started to come out of his rage, and suddenly realized her was carrying the staff on his person.

IM: Idiot.

His eyes flicked away from his opponent for a moment, hearing the stinger impale Walter's shoulder.

IM: Poison, when a scorpion duels in the desert with another scorpion, the winner is the one to inject their poison into their opponent first.

Elijah's swayed a little, as if looking for a chance to strike.

IM:This isn't the desert though, and I'm not a scorpion.

"Well what do I do with it? So it "causes harm" and "purges" evil... what do I do? Just wish them all away?" Besides, how reliable would the magic in this staff be? Besdies he was much more adept with his tail... yet despite all common sense...

Elijah tried to conjure up what power may of lied within the staff, and then, glaring at the tail, pumping its poison, he charged at Zotacthant, hoping to impale the creature, and push him far back enoguh that his tail would be dislodged from Walter's shoulder.

As Elijah attempted to impale Zotacthant on the staff, it started to glow brightly, light swirling around it.

And just before Elijah reached Zotacthant, a large beam of light seared out of it, filling the room with a bright light. When the light finally subsided, Zotacthant was simply not there anymore, not even a trace of dust remaining. The demon had paid for what he did.

(Elijah activated the special ability of the staff, causing 176 damage to Zotacthant and destroying him.)

Seeing this, Damon turned his attention to the one target left - Agolas. He spun his shikomi-zue a few times rapidly, before stabbing the beast through the stomach, causing blood to pour even more freely.

(Damon dealt 34 damage. Jeff's turn.)

"...." Elijah was stunned. Power. Such, INCREDIBLE power. But it wasn't his own. This staff was not his. Finders were not eternally keepers, why did such a staff exist here?

Elijah gripped the staff tightly now, and took a moment to try to read the description again, fully this time, almost forgetting that he was in the midst of a battle.

Jeff's fireball singed the marrash badly, especially his wings. Just from a simple look, Agolas was almost out of it.

That was when Walter brought his staff up and slammed it down on the weakened marrash's head. It swayed a bit, then finally collapsed backwards, the wounds of battle having taken their toll.

(Combat over. 400 experience to everyone, and an extra 50 to both Layne and Elijah for the magic item usage.)

Damon collapsed onto his hands and knees. "We... did it?"

Darrith then quickly responded. "I don't think this is over yet. Start looking for a phylactery."

Meanwhile, Elijah was able to decipher the rest of the staff's inscription. It read, "To slay the minions of darkness and their brood, to cause harm to the darkness and purge those that would corrupt the innocent, pointing at a hellspawn will blast it, but only once in a cycle of conflict."

"Not sure," Jeff said, wandering over to have a look himself. "But we should find the soul gem before old Storm Eye pulls the old 'hah! You cannot destroy me, foolish mortals!' card out of his sleeve." A thought occurred to him.

"Could I see that ring for a minute, Layne?"

As Layne and, later, Jeff went over to pick up the ring and katana, they noticed something strange under the desk.

There was a golden chalice there. Even weirder, it had a wire in it, from which a diamond was suspended just above it.

What was even MORE bizarre was that both the gem and the chalice were glowing.

Elijah couldn't help but feel some restlessness in his tail that had been left out of the final phase of the battle. It swayed a little in the air behind him, still posed to strike at something.

"Careful, who knows what defenses the lich's phylactery may have." Elijah gave a small glare at the ring.

<span style="font-family:comic sans ms; color:navy;">"Then maybe we should use this," Layne said, hefting the katana.

Damon, looking over to Layne, shook his head, as did Darrith. "Haven't a clue," they both said almost at the same time.

Jeff, meanwhile, had gotten a thought about the jewel and chalice. The lich had been trying to hide it as soon as they arrived... but for what reason?

Suspicion building, Jeff brought his astral sight to bear upon the gem and chalice. If this was what he thought it was, there ought to be some sign of it on the atral plane.

And if it wasn't... Well, it was probably important anyway.

And sure enough, Jeff could sense some sort of life force within the jewel and chalice - definitely the "phylactery" they were looking for.

Damon and Darrith, meanwhile, were looking around the rest of the room, Darrith not having even bothered to return to the two-legged form he had had before.

"This is it alright," Jeff said, indicating the jewel and chalice. "Destroy them and it should be over." Of course, destroying the phylactery could be tricky. Still, the group had any number of sharp, heavy, or enchanted implements between them.

"That katana looks like it might be good for the purpose," Jeff continued, turning his astral sight on it and the ring to see if he could pick up anything interesting about them. "Who wants to do the honours?"

Divinegon2130

Re: The home stretch.

Jeff noted that the katana radiated a strong aura of dark magic - a VERY strong aura, in fact, that indicated darkness-related abilities. Also, he noticed that the ring seemed to radiate thunder and fire magic to a certain degree. In both cases, the magic seemed to be of an offensive nature.

Damon stepped towards where Jeff was, twisting the shikomi-zue back into its staff form. "If no one objects, I'll do it. Step back."

Darrith then suddenly turned towards the group. "Wait!" He blinked for a few moments, then added, "That thing's going to collapse the tower if we destroy it!"

".......wasn't there some secret you mentioned?" Damon answered.

At this, Darrith stared for a few moments. "....oh, right! Hop on my back, everyone." Damon was about to do this when Darrith added, "Not you - you smash the thing first."

"But first... It's a matter of principle, you know." Jeff cheerfully placed an object under the desk. "We've replaced Storm Eye's soul gem with a piece of mouldy cheese. Let's see if he notices the difference."

This somewhat cliched act out of the way, he climbed on to Darrith's back.

After Layne climbed onto Darrith's back, Walter followed up as well. This left Damon to be the only one left. Damon put the chalice back on top of the table. Then, after bringing his shikomi-zue back above his head, he slammed it down on the jewel and chalice.

This action shattered the gem, sending shards of it all around the floor, and then suddenly, the group observed that Damon seemed to have something forced into his body before he subsequently collapsed.

Once this happened, the part of the wall bearing the pentagram crumbled, revealing daylight - and Darrith was about to fly out when he remembered Damon. After walking over and picking him up in his forelimbs, Darrith proceeded to fly outside the tower.

And just in time, too, as the tower began collapsing as soon as Darrith got out. Slowly, Darrith flew to a point just outside Doma City and slowly landed, setting Damon down as he did so.

"And there we are," Darrith said as soon as he landed. Just as he said this, Damon started to awaken, but within his eyes was an eerie, red light where the whites of his eyes were supposed to be.

Elijah hoped off, a slight frown on his face as he looked at Damon. He regreted now not being the one to destroy that phylactery, he was confident that he would be able to deal with whatever happened, Damon on the other hand... well the staff had already reacted to him once. Was this person, his comrade, really evil. He looked at the staff in his hands, turning it about idly.

"Don't worry about me," Damon answered. "I should be able to take care of this thing that came into me on my own."

Meanwhile, Walter slowly got off of Darrith, whose form shimmered and returned to a two-legged orientation after this happened. "....well, home at last. Now to go greet my friends." He started to walk into the city on his own.

Elijah's turning of the staff revealed another short phrase on it. The phrase read: "Those who bear the blood of the damned are just as bad as the damned themselves."

Elijah clenched his fists for a moment. He'd make his own decisions, though he did thank the creator of the staff for its opinion. Whatever sense of victory he had felt before was gone, he was not going to through the staff away, he had become attached to it, he was going to rely on powers and strength that were not his own.

He lowered the staff, still in his left hand though, and cried out to darrith "Thanks by the way!" He then turned to Damon. "Damon, I apologize if this question sounds a bit blunt, but who are you?"
