Kelne, for his part, was quite happy to let Jak do the talking. As he'd expected, this place was just more of the same. These people were certainly big on predictability.

Paige looked at Jeridan more than a little nervously. "Uh...Umm....Is there...Anything I can do for you?"

The smallish woman quietly relaces her fingers as Jak speaks, then says, "It is peculiar that if your lands know nothing of our relics, then you would know to come here to learn of them. I cannot imagine your lands know any more about us than we do of you."

(OOC: Jak is having trouble with EZBoard, so he's asked me to post his reply for him.)

Jak flashed a grin, thought it'd be hard to see under the shadow of his hat.

"That's very much true. However, a good year or so back a friend of ours, the very one who asked us to come out here for him, was transported to this country by some freak magical phenomena. During his time here he found out that your people knew something of this artifact, but not before the same freak of magic transported him back to our fair lands. Fortunately for us he's a sailor and got a good idea of where this continent was in relation to ours from the stars. Thus me and my friends were commissioned to sail out here to find a way to remove the Limiter from his little girl." He tilted his head towards the door to indicate that the cabbit that he referred to was outside.

The woman arcs an eyebrow. "The probablity of this is very low, such magic, to my knowledge, does not seem maintainable on Thelahassa. Still, I don't sense that you are being dishonest; and there wa-." She stops herself, suddenly. "In any event, I welcome you to Settlement 4, as long as your stay is peaceful. Is there anything that I can do to assist you?"

Jeridan had, by now, taken to lying down on the carpet. It just didn't feel good to sit up now that Jak couldn't be there to hold a cooling spell over him. He was concious, but half-delirious by this point. He understood what Paige was sayying to him, at the very least. However...

"Yeah... tell the cubes to stop changing... So annoying... Does it smell like thirsty here to you?"

Dia--who'd stayed behind with Paige and Jeridan, not wishing to deal with more Thalasians anytime soon--raised an eyebrow at Jeridan's words. She opened her mouth to reply, but was interrupted by Fluffy jumping up at her face with a loud chirrup.

"...I don't know about myself, but Fluffy says it does."

Kelne produced his record from a pocket, handing it over wordlessly. Granted, it was marked for a day's worth of food, but converting that to a night's accommodation shouldn't pose a great deal of difficulty.

In some ways, he reflected, this was halfway between a barter economy and one with real money. He was sure that the more abstract idea of money wasn't beyond them, but it was probably regarded as an inefficient system. Personally, Kelne could see quite a few inefficiencies inherent in the provisional record system. To say nothing of the potential for forgery.

Jak followed him out, quickly checking to make sure Jeridan wasn't dead or the like, then looked to Kelne once again.

"I'd like to keep our stopover down to one night, even if we were given two nights rest. This place seems to offer exactly what the last settlement did."

Jak's desire to explore new lands was quickly being sapped away.

DOC-TOR?!

Postby Kelne » Fri Sep 23, 2005 1:45 am

Kelne gave Jeridan a perusal as Jak resumed the cold spell. He hadn't exactly improved in their absense.

"We'll see what the doctor has to say about him," he said, bringing out the translation glasses so that he could read the street signs, "Given a bit of time, I should be able to put something together to keep him cool. Hopefully that'll fix things."

With that, Kelne set out in search of HU-4E's home, carpet and Jeridan in tow, assuming the others would follow. He still didn't think that there was anything wrong with Jeridan beyond heat sickness, but a second opinion wouldn't hurt.

Postby Besyanteo » Fri Sep 23, 2005 3:41 am

Jeridan continued on much as he had to this point. Jak's spell caused him to calm some, but he still looked very ill. The observant would notice that his eyes aren't in focus. The medically trained would say he looked like a shock victim.

For the skills of our group, he likely just seems mildly crazed.

It does not take Kelne long to find the aforementioned doctor. Inside, he finds a brown-haired woman that any Igalan would have taken for a half-elf at first sight. With her is a tall, fully human man with dark hair and matching skin. They seem to have been engaged in some sort of conversation, which dies off as strangers with a magic carpet walk into the building. This particular place features a couple of pallets laid across the floor, all of them current empty.

The woman gives Jeridan a critical look as he is brought in. "What has happened to your...beast...person? It seems to be suffering from Excitement."

She glances to the man. "Prepare a sedative."

Kelne's eyes narrowed dangerously. He kept his voice level and calm, if a trifle chilly, "Excitement," he said, "Is not a medical condition." He didn't like Jeridan being referred to as a beast-person. He also didn't like the instinctive drive to quash any display of emotion, by force if necessary.

Kelne throttled back his own feelings with effort. Five seconds into the conversation and he already wanted to strangle the woman. These people really did bring out the worst in him. But she was only doing her job, and bristling at her certainly wouldn't help Jeridan.

He proceeded a tad more sensibly, "So far as we can tell, he's suffering from the heat," he said, "He seemed alright until about half an hour ago, at which point he began to experience nausea, dizziness and a fever. Keeping him cool seems to help somewhat, but obviously his fur isn't helping." He considered for a moment, "So far as I'm aware, he's been drinking plenty of water."

Gods knew anyone who didn't drink plenty of water in this climate deserved whatever they got. Kelne himself had long since packed away his coat in deference to the climate, and was feeling somewhat envious of Jak's hat. It must be considerably cooler under there.

Priam is stuck :(

Postby PriamNevhausten » Sat Sep 24, 2005 6:07 am

"You are ignorant," says the woman, who is presumably HU-4E, to Kelne. "It is clearly having some breathing difficulties, as well as unusually high body temperature. By the look of things, it is also having trouble focusing its mind. I imagine it must have some heart difficultly a well. Judging from the offal caught in its fur, it has also had difficulty retaining its food. These are all signs of excitement. I expect it as been in the open sun for too long. Will you be continue to bicker with me in Shamaya's gaze, or shall I set to treating it?"

Toward the latter half of her diatribe, she draws closer to Jeridan. Then she looks to Jak, Paige, and Dia. "Please move it to one of the beds. The cloth should be pleasantly cool for it."

Jak is begining to feel a bit drained. Not enough that he could not keep up his spell for a while longer, but enough to know he's starting to push himself.

The man, meanwhile, seems to be looking through a cabinette.

Jak noted the lady's use of "it," but kept his opinions to himself. No reason to stir up trouble over one ignorant. Especially the ignorant who'd be administering medical care to Jeridan.

He dropped his spell once again, gesturing towards a nearby bed and looking towards Paige and Dia, fully expecting them to attend to the man.

Jeridan himself didn't look to be in any position to complain. Now that they were indoors and Jak had been cooling him a bit he appeared to be calming down, but he still didn't have a firm grasp on reality. This might or might not be evident to the others, as he crossed his eyes and stared at his own horn with great interest.

Kelne bit back a nasty retort. Something along the lines of if excitement were a medical condition, perhaps she'd care to describe the symptoms of sadness, joy or anger to him for future reference? She had damn well better know what she was doing. The signs seemed to point to it, even if being called ignorant by the likes of her rankled.

As with so many statements by the locals, this one just wasn't worth the cost of arguing with them over it. Godsdamnit, he hated relying on these people for anything, let alone fixing up a sick comrade. All it did was reinforce their auras of smug superiority.

It was something of a shock to realise that the Thalsians were rapidly aproaching the top of his list of aggravating people. And this was a list which included the minions, the Sidhe, Infinity, Enlil in full peacekeeper mode, and any number of others. He was not looking forward to spending a couple of weeks tracking down leads from them.

Firmly keeping his thoughts internal, Kelne maneouvred the carpet over next to a bed, and used his free hand to help lift Jeridan onto it.

Paige prepared to help move the massive (To her) Garou. She thought about it for a minute, then looked to Jak. "I don't think they use the same terminology we do. I've read about it...What they're describing sounds kind of like going into shock...But shock can't be caused by heat, I don't think..."

With that, she quieted up a bit, lost in thought.

Take it and Run - Breath of Fire III OST

Postby Uncle Pervy » Sun Sep 25, 2005 5:59 am

Jeridan is moved, and the woman kneels beside him. She examines him critically for a moment, then places her hands over him; one over his chest and one over his stomach, hovering fractions of an inch over him. Then she begins to chant.

Jak recognizes it as sounding similiar to the one he heard yesterday. Those who choose to watch the process astrally see that she is using primarily healing magic, with a touch of water-based mixed in. The process, those giving astral looks note, is a curious one, using very simple techniques and building from them. It's similiar to using only addition and subtraction to solve an algebric equation by trial and error.

Jeridan, however, finds his mind is clearing, and the feelin of heat is dispersing, leaving him very thirsty and feeling 'dry' in general. The man kneels beside him with a bottle as the woman draws her hands back. "Drink a mouthful of this," he says, "only one. I'll fetch you some water once you finish."

HU-4E approaches the group. "It should be fine now. I presume that it was in the sun too long. Given its lack of protective clothing, I am not surprised it succumbed. I recommend clothing that is light and loose; this should not be hard to procure. Head covering should be close fitting." She glances over the group. "I recommend the same to you all as well, if you are going to be in the sun for any length of time."

She glances back to Jeridan. "You are feeling better?"

Jeridan slowly made the trip back to reality, from the time the healing began on up to the moment of the question from HU-4E. He sounded groggy, but his eyes looked very focused now as he replied:

"Yes... Thank you."

He drank, lightly, from the offered bottle. If he'd heard himself referred to as an 'it', he certainly didn't show it. Medicine was obviously the priority right now.

"Drink lightly," says the man, as he takes the bottle from Jeridan, and provides a small cup of water. "Too much at once is as dangerous as too little. But you will have enough."

HU-4E nods to Jeridan. Then she looks to the group again. "You act like Belu, but your dress makes me think otherwise. Where are you from? And, are its people common there?" She glances at Jeridan, then says, "I assume you are male from your voice. Correct?"

Jeridan, who aparently now had the personality back to raise an eyebrow at being refered to as 'it', decided to drink a bit of water before replying. He still sounded fairly tired when he talked, but it wasn't nearly so bad as he sounded at the end of the carpet ride.

"Yes. My people are fairly similar in body to humans... Yes, we're common."

He then took another sip. Aparently the offcolor pronoun was going to slide entirely.

The fact that they'd been referring to Jeridan as 'him' should also have been a clue, Kelne reflected to himself. Again, he resisted the temptation to say so aloud. The fact that Jeridan seemed better now, and was actually coherent helped reduce his irritation.

"We're from a continent called Igala, which is across the eastern sea," he remarked, since nobody had answered that question.

"Is there any work that I can do in the settlement, before it's time to sleep? I understand that these towns are...efficiently arranged to get needed work done, but in order for us to be able to trade for food and goods, we'll need to do work. Any cleaning, small repairs, cooking or the like?"

Jeridan continued to take water, at more and more regular intervals. It is not that he's taking in greater amounts, simply that the action seems to become increasingly mechanic. For now, he's stayying out of the conversation. ... And with his track record, that's probably a good sign, right?
