Jeridan paused for a moment, as though thinking of this for the first time himself.

"Actually, no. No one mentioned it. I suppose we should try to finish up and see if anyone's gathered on deck or not."

With that said, Jeridan tried to hurry up a little and finish his meal.

In the galley, the dinners note some grumbling among the men. Some about the coming heat, some about the surroundings. But nothing is too bad. Already, the attentive may note some bets being placed on who catches what.

****

On deck, a couple early bird sailors work on mending some of more-used nets. It's fairly peaceful; and the last of the sunrise colors can be seen to the east as the sun makes it way into the sky.

****

"We shall arrange for a proper exchange," AD-7 tells Kelne. "I shall prepare a request for coal promptly."

A short time later, his food eatten and his dishes put in their proper place, Jeridan heads onto the deck. He smiles to Dia there, trying to make himself look more awake than he feels. The effect isn't quite what he's aiming for, sadly. He walks on over, and looks about the deck breifly.

"Seen anyone else up and about yet?"

Kelne nodded, "We're still figuring out just what ideas you might be interested in. I thought I'd run through a few names, see what you do or don't recognise."

With that, he began rattling off several names from the list he'd compiled, leaving a brief pause after each for AD-7 to give a brief positive or negative answer, "Compasses, telescopes, mirrors, windmills, and the printing press sums up our immediate ideas."

Dia pointed over to the sailors on deck who were working on the nets, and then waved in the general direction of the busied settlement. "I also saw Kelne go out to the settlement earlier. That's about it."

Jeridan nodded.

"Ok then, I suppose we're waiting for him to get back..."

He streatched his arms, and tried to think of something more conversational to say. For some reason, he found silence uncomfortable.

"Feels like another scorcher today."

Soon after Jeridan stopped moving, he could feel a distinctly lapdragon-sized weight on one of his feet. Were he to look, he would see a somewhat worn-out Fluffy looking up at him with his best 'I'm so cute!' expression.

Meanwhile, a grimace met Jeridan's prediction of the weather, making it well-known Dia's thoughts on the heat. "Yeah. I should really cut my hair down. I've let it get out of hand since taking over the Jade Dragon...I always kept it short when I was a merc."

Jeridan smiled ruefully, as he bent down to pet fluffy.

"Believe me, I can sympathize. The heat's even less fun your your body is covered in fur."

He paused for a moment, and then returned to petting fluffy. A merc?

"Mercenary work? I remember doing that... I'd just as soon forget it though. Life free-lancing was never kind to me. I suppose it wasn't great to you either, seeign as we both settled down."

Admittedly, Doma wasn't much of a place to settle down and start a peaceful life these days, but it was better than wandering from place to place.

"You can never kick the wanderlust, though."

Jak strolled up to the duo, looking out onto town.

"Even if this particular town is a cesspit, there's still a whole new land out there. You don't get to experience that wandering the streets of Doma, breaking up drunks and dealing with the odd lunatic with delusions of grandeur."

Jeridan turned, and had to nod at Jak's words with some Chagrin.

"Hello again Jak. Dia just told me that Kelne headed into town earlier, so we're waiting on him. Hadn't gotten around to asking about a tent yet though."

Jak's arrival interrupted whatever Dia's response to Jeridan would have been. She nodded, half in greeting, half in agreement to his statement about wanderlust.

"Tent? I traveled light with only the basics--personal items. I trusted the captain to provide for the group necessities such as that.

"I'm not entirely sure where Kelne headed off to, but if we can track down Paige, we can ask her about it, or get permission to dig around in the stores. Worst to worst, I can rig something out of a large enough piece of canvas and some poles or sticks or something." She wrinkled her face. "It's starting to get hot out here, anyway."

"Well then, let's track her down. I dare say that beats sweltering out here. Plenty of time for that on the road."

And without giving the others a chance to reply, Jak scurried off to find Paige. Really, what's up with that?

Paige would be found lurking within the middle engine room, tinkering with the engine a bit. Unless someone spoke up, she would be more or less oblivious to any visitors.

Kelne nodded thoughtfully. It wasn't that these people were backwards exactly, it was that they had no drive. He expected that if he'd come here five centuries ago, or came back five centuries later, nothing would have changed.

Perhaps the knowledge that airships could be built would inspire them to try creating them for themselves. Then again, perhaps not.

"We'll have to keep at it, then," he said, "There is one thing that puzzles me, however. The map I was given doesn't show the entirety of your coastline. I was told that this was because the expenditure of resources required by a mapping expedition was deemed too great. Is this true?"

"This is true," AD-7 says. "An investment of food is required. Water must be taken, as well as supplies. Such efforts have yielded nothing in the past. Storage is required in the possibility of drought or shortage. Judging from the visual records you have shown me, this is not the situation for your lands."

Jeridan nodded as Jak to locate Paige. Then he glanced at Dia and fluffy.

"While we wait, maybe we ought to head in, out of the heat? ... I've actually got a pair of scissors with me, so we could trim your hair real quick."

The brown garoujin smiles, and head on in whilst rummaging through his supplies. He'd actually meant to use the scissors in case something became irrevocably tangled in his fur, as sometimes happened in forests or marshes. However, it looked like in this place the most use they would see would be shortening Dia's hair a little.

He makes for the room they've been sleeping in, without much better idea of where it ought to be done.

Kelne shrugged, "Any lengthy voyage requires supplies. I suppose the telling difference is that we have no great difficulty in gathering them to begin with." The general picture that was emerging put him in mind of an old quote. He'd have to see more of the continent before he knew how applicable it was to the situation.

"Still, the fact that no one has followed through with such an expedition even once... It's difficult to understand." Once again, that lack of drive presented itself.

"Somebody suggested that we might map out the coastline ourselves, but I'm honestly not sure the map would be worth anything to you."

"Tents?" Paige asks, somewhat confused. "This ship is stocked for air and sea travel, mainly...Why would it need tents? There's some spare cloth around for patching sails, and enough rig...Why? Are you planning something?"

"No doubt," Kelne said, with a tinge of irony in his voice, "Well, that's about it from me. I'll likely see you whenever we get back."

With that he stood. After a brief pause to be sure AD-7 didn't have anything else to add, he headed out and back to the ship.

"Just to keep sand out of our eyes, ears and noses when we go to sleep. Dia said she could rig something out of the likes of what you mentioned. We could try getting one from this place, but Kelne's already headed in and he's our man for these blasted requisitions."

Within a fairly short order, Kelne returns to the ship, while the rest of the eager beavers find that improvising a tent should not be too hard.

Dia, meanwhile, had made her way with Jeridan to a comfortable place to get her hair cut. Fluffy, who had tried his valiant best to cling to Jeridan's foot when he began moving, soon found that his original plan of hitching a ride was just wasn't possible.

"Thanks for this, Jeridan, I appreciate it. I normally just cut it off with a dagger, which can be difficult to get right when you can't see well what you're doing."

Jeridan smirked at Fluffy's antics, and then turned to the matter of Dia's hair.

"Well, that's what friends are for, right?"

He got out his scissors, and then looked at her hair studiously.

"How short do you want it? To the shoulders, just below the ears?"

Dia is taken to Jeridan's chambers, and the shears produced. A little time, and Dia's hair is shortened nicely. it's not professional quality, but it's even and doesn't look bad to the eye unless you stare at it closely. And if you're staring at Dia's hair that close, chances are she's going to want to know why.

(OOC: +50 XP to Jeridan and Dia, because that amused me, dammit.

I'll be NPCing Jeridan as needs be til bes returns. FD has become a sticking point. I want people to IM me their thoughts on removing him from the RP; yea or nay. I am tempted, but shant if you guys want him.)

Jeridan smiled. For someone with no practical skill at barbering, it wasn't a half bad job.

"All finished!"

He set about disposing of the removed hair, and then put his scissors away.

"I'm going to take a look on deck to see if the others have gathered there yet. Care to join me?"

(OOC: It is my great sadness to report that FD is officially dropped, after not even trying to post for god knows how long. However, he may appeal for a sidequest.)

With some work, a rough tent is made up, and our heroes gather on the deck for any last minute talking before departing.

Captain Hawkin's is there, but he doesn't seem to have much to say, as he directs the men into reading the ship for sail.

Kelne hadn't been idle in the interim; He'd been organising some supplies for the trip and making sure there was enough space on the carpet for everyone after the gear had been stowed. With that organised, he levitated it a couple of feet off the deck and took a seat.

"Right then, let's get this show on the road."
