"I know these lot are distasteful, but they're hardly as bad as Valth. In any case, point taken. Perhaps...hmm. Perhaps we could exchange services? These people don't appear to have adventurers, and I'm sure they must have problems. If not with anything outlandish then with the Belu, though I've yet to hear of any major conflict that's happened recently."

Jak wondered how bad the Belu could be, and if they'd be better off siding with them over the fanatics that currently gave them harbor.

Jeridan decided to pick up here.

"I'd rather avoid problems between the two myself. Without any more information about the Belu, we might end regretting things pretty deeply later... While it's extreme to think about, try to imagine if we natives of somewhere else, and visited Doma to find that it was occupies by the demon armies. If we started taking missions to assault the freedom forces, it would only hurt us in the long run."

"Firstly, we're dealing with people here, not demons. Secondly, while I'm sure that neither is entirely evil, we do need to be able to offer something in exchange for supplies. Hell, we could try asking the Belu for help. They might even know more than this TO. But....yes, not committing ourselves to a side is probably best for now. What do we exactly need for this trip, anyway?"

This direction was directed toward Kelne, along with a hand holding the recently removed pair of glasses.

"Hmm." Kelne took back the glasses, pocketing them again, "Enough supplies to last us a week, I'd say, along with our usual gear. I rather doubt getting supplies as we go would be easy. We can probably arrange accommodation, but not much else." He snapped his fingers with abrupt inspiration, changing tack, "Windmills. I'll bet good money they don't have windmills."

"We could work," Dia suggested, speaking up for the first time. "That'd be what the people who live here do to earn their necessities, isn't it--or am I mistaken? Can't be sure, I really don't think the logic of these people is Gaera logic..."

Not too much longer later, Valentia and the unnamed crewman arrived back on the ship. After reporting that she hadn't learned anything more of significance, she quietly sat back, and allowed another crewman to fill her in on what had happened in her absence. She nodded, and continued listening.

"We could work, yes," Kelne said, "But unless we can find jobs that these people can't do for themselves, I expect it will take us quite a while to get together the supplies we need. After all, I don't think anyone here works for anything beyond the necessities."

He was silent for a few moments, "We're going about this the wrong way. Instead of coming up with reasons why these ideas won't work, let's just make a list of what these people don't have and go from there."

With that, Kelne produced a piece of paper and a pencil, and began writing.

"Bear in mind that we're dealing in ideas here. We don't have to build windmills and the like, we just have to explain them well enough that they can build them for themselves."

Soon enough, he'd jotted down a few ideas. It was a short list so far, but more ideas would come, he was sure.

Magical techniques
Windmills
Clocks
Mirrors?
Telescopes
Compasses?

Hawkins, having been listening up to this point, says, "I've been thinkin'. Whatever happens, someone's gotta stay wit' the Fortune[i], right? I was thinkin', if you lot go exploring, we might be able t' say here and do somma that fishin'. The old girl's still seaworthy, after all."

"Eating fish forever may be boring, but if it can be smoked or whatever, at least we could stock up our food stores some, couldn't we? Assuming that they couldn't use us to replace their fishermen, and free up workers to go help the TO or something. That place seemed a bit...crowded.

"What about the coastline? Didn't someone mention it wasn't mapped out--maybe that is something that could be done."

Paige, who had been more than somewhat distracted through the conversation thusfar (How DARE they mess with her mind...Or whatever they did to her!), suddenly perked up. "Wait, windmills? I could probably do that. There's quite a bit of stuff I could probably do here...Question is if they're interested."

"It's difficult to say what's going to interest them. I was told practical, useful things. But feel free to throw out any ideas you have regardless. We can always pare them down later."

He noted down Dia's idea of mapping the coastline, "I'm not sure how much they'd value a map of the coast, but I may as well ask." Given the amount of time they'd have to spend engaged in the mapping, it probably wouldn't be worth their while.

"Well, I was thinkin'," Hawkin's says, after the conversation winds down a bit, "You lads are the best for explorin', no questions there. So we'd stay and do some fishin', and see if we can't get our coal like that. And y' get used t' fish all the time, Miss Dia. Tis a part o' sailin'."

Valentia merely sat there and listened, for the most part.

"There is not much that I know that they would find useful," she half-mumbled to herself, "Unless for some reason they wished to know more about honorable combat..."

Kelne shook his head, "Unlikely. I rather doubt they go in for any sort of combat, honourable or otherwise."

Seeing that the fount of ideas had pretty well dried up for now, he continued, "Alright. If people could fill me in on any ideas they come up with tomorrow morning, that'll be fine. Getting back to the trip to settlement ten. Who's coming?"

Nodding, Valentia simply stated, "There is not much that I would be able to help with as far as trading here or fishing is concerned. Perhaps it would be best if I accompanied the expedition."

Of course, she did have her own ulterior motives beyond what was stated, but she certainly wasn't going to let anyone else know.

"Six seems like a good number," Kelne said. He wasn't sure how much good a couple of them were going to be, but it wasn't like they were going into a fight. Besides which, in their positions, he sure as hell wouldn't want to just stick around here doing sweet nothing.

And that was what anyone without fishing experience would be up to. Paige might be able to spend time coming up with various technology to sell to the locals, but after her recent experience, he was hardly going to force her to stay.

"Does anyone have any other points they'd like to raise?" he asked. He'd pretty much come to the end of what he wanted to cover. He'd already filled Hawkins in on the whole business with the arrest, and was confident that he'd pass on the warning to the crew in his own time.

"Alright then," Kelne said, after a short time had passed with no word from anyone, "We'll get an early start tomorrow, so be ready. I'll arrange things with the locals so that they're at least gathering the coal we'll need while we're away."

With that, he stood, intending to spend a bit of time on deck before the evening meal.

Sorry about the delay, been in sort of a slump

Unread postby Uncle Pervy » Wed Aug 10, 2005 3:47 pm

With the meeting adjourned, people are left free to do as they desire. Dinner is served as per usual, whilst the galley is full of talk about Settlement Seven and the Thalsians; not much of it is very complimentary. In particular, Giles is fairly moody and irate, telling stories about how he was imprisoned in what was essentially a closet and magically sedated, which draws a fair deal of outrage. Wiser souls may conclude that Hawkin's may well have trouble with this later on.

Luckily, much of the crew is asleep when a short-haired woman comes to the ship, seeking Kelne and identifying herself as AD-7A. With precision, she produces, and after viewing the ship's roster, and assigns Provision records to everyone on the crew. Briefly, she explains that all exchanges among the the Thalsian settlements are registered by the ADs, who should always have people available to do so quickly.

The night passes without incident or sudden surprise raids from the alien shore. People wake up as per usual, and set to making sure the ship isn't going to fall apart. Hawkin's is making plans to set up the sails, and get fishing nets ready. The day promises to be as hot as the prior ones.

Jak's first order of business when he rose was to get packed. However, he soon realised a spare, lighter set of his trademark green robes, some undergarments, a bedroll and a bar of soap was all he had on him that'd be needed for this trip. He hoped he'd be able to grab something edible and lasting from whatever Kelne had bartered for, as well as other various items. Such as a tent, compass and no small deal of rope. The latter was probably rendered obsolete by the carpet, he mused as he made his way towards the mess hall. But it never hurt to be prepared.

"Morning Jeridan. You wouldn't happen to have a traveling man's paraphernalia, would you?"

Jeridan hefted his small pack that he'd brought with him from Doma.

"Some dried food, a pair of scissors, some spare clothes, and a bedroll. Ash makes a nice soap, even a cleaner for the teeth. If we're out long enough for it to become a problem we'll probably have built a campfire anyway. I think that's about it, for me."

Kelne had gotten an early start. After his usual morning weapons drill to keep his reflexes honed, he'd nabbed a quick breakfast and gotten his gear organised. This consisted of a bedroll, a change of clothes, some rope, a towell, a compass and telescope, and some spare ammunition, among some of life's other little necessities.

He'd put the lot in his pack, and left it in the middle of the deck atop his carpet. People would no doubt congregate there as they spotted it.

Right now, he was off to fill AD-7 in on their plans. He'd nabbed an extra compass and telescope for possible trading purposes. Unfortunately, a brief search had failed to turn up a clock. So much for that idea.

Settlement seven is bustling in the morning, probably to take advantage of the lesser heat. The small fishing boats, if they have not left yet, are being readied. The people seem to be setting to work doing their tasks outside, when possible. Kelne passes a potter working his wheel, and a few older women who seem to be collaborating on a blanket suspected on a frame hung between two houses.

Getting to AD-7's place is not difficult; once one gets the pattern down, Settle Seven is easy to navigate; and he finds the tarp is pulled open.

Dia spent most of her evening time quietly soaking up the crew gossip and feeling rather put out at her somewhat alienated position. She retreated to sleep early, rising before dawn to pack her usual--a change of clothes, a cloak to double as a blanket, a small sewing packet; two money pouches, and a wooden spoon. Finding herself with little better to do, Dia took herself up above deck to play with Fluffy and watch the settlement, enjoying the outside while the temperature was still bearable.

And so Kelne did, finding himself a seat, "It seems that we'll be staying a bit longer than I'd originally thought. We've been trying to track down information on an artifact known as the Limiter, and apparently it was stolen from settlement 10 some years back. So myself and several others will be heading up there."

"In the meantime, the rest of the crew are going to spend their time fishing. That alleviates our supplies problem, and gives us something to trade other than raw ideas."

He paused to give AD-7 room to make any comments of his own.

"Fishing is a very useful exchange," says AD-7. "It is pleasing that you have decided to work in favor of the community." Something tells Kelne that the man would smile if he thought he could get away with it. And perhaps sigh in relief.

Kelne certainly didn't miss the signs of relief. Looking at it from AD-7's perspective, things could easily have gone the other way. The visitors, clearly possessing the technological high ground and with unknown magical capabilities, could have decided to take what they wanted by force.

Gods knew that Kelne had seen that situation often enough. One group or another perceived some advantage, and exploited it to the full. The example of Infinity presented itself.

Of course, it never would have worked. But just because something was patently foolish didn't mean that the desperate or idiotic wouldn't make the attempt. Not to mention the arrogant.

"That pretty well reduces our needs to some foodstuffs to provide some variety from the fish," he continued, "and around two tons of coal. That's enough to fill the front room of your guard station four fifths of the way to the top."

For her part, Paige stuck around the engines more the next day, likely not wanting to get in trouble with the law. Busying herself with basic maintenance of just about everything, she tried to make as little contact with the outside world as possible.

Well, until lunchtime, at least.

He sat down at Jeridan's table, along with his breakfast.

"Any idea what hour we're setting off at?"
