Mana is a weird name for mist. And it's been like this...um...a long time. I don't know how long, but it feels like always. I think something saps it away.

"Are you hearing all this, Kelne?" Dia looked over, growing frustration etched on her face. She gave an exasperated sigh and shook her head. "I can't really make any sense of it all. Do you have any questions for him?"

"I think I've got the basics. It helps that he's pretty well confirming what we've been observing for ourselves. Anyway, I may as well give him his snack now."

With some effort, Kelne wove together his usual measures against all things hot and burning, providing enough energy to sustain it for a day or so. He placed it on the side of the table closest to the creature.

How's that? he asked, making himself known to the creature for the first time, And what do you normally do for food? I don't imagine you get many people out here.

Huh. Another one. Both Dia and Kelne recieve this. Where are you all coming from? This is so weird. Oh well. I eat aether, just like everyone else. And this looks nice for a snack.

The astrally sensative who are paying attention see the thing press against the spoon and consume the aura about it. The rest note the spoon moves just a bit.

Oh! Normally I don't eat here. I go other places.

Given that she didn't much trust magic-users in the first place, Valentia continued to vigilantly stay out of the situation. The mages could take care of this business themselves. After all, this ship was mechanical...a complete lack of whatever that garbage was wouldn't cause it to fall out of the sky. Presumably.

"Ah, Blackjack." she responded with a grin. "This seems a perfect opportunity to lose what precious little money I have!"

Whereabouts are your normal haunts, incidentally? I can't say I've heard of anyone like you before, and I'm sure any regular encounters would be remarked upon.

If nothing else, the occasional sudden disenchantment would attract notice. Kelne wasn't too up to date with the theories behind the astral plane, but supposedly it extended pretty much everywhere. This creature wasn't necessarily from the surface of Gaera at all.

"That's the kind of attitude I like to hear!" says one of the gamers. "You'll win it all back in no time and you know it!"

Oh, we go all over. I like to stay around the Grand Flows myself, and other times I'll work my way over to the Silds or the Isles. There's all of places we go! But I like it here, when I want to rest.

Oddly enough, that made a certain degree of sense to Kelne. It all sounded like the sort of thing you'd find in a sea. Whether these features on the astral plane corresponded to those of the material plane was anybody's guess, though.

Well, I think that about covers my questions, he said, Is there anything you'd like to know?

Dia, for her part, sat back and listened to Kelne talk with the thing. She was tired of trying to make sense of all this.

What's an ear? I'm not sure how you'd do it, but I guessed thta if you could talk to me, you could probably reach me.

Dia, being used to thinking of how to move creatures from one place to another, deciphers that summoning it wouldn't be too tricky, even with the weakened astral presence.

It doesn't quite work like that. Telepathy seems to work across the boundary, and some of us can see across it, but the skills necessary to move back and forth physically are extremely rare. He considered a moment, trying to come up with an analogy, I don't suppose you know what a door is?

Jeridan saw the spoon jump, and watched as no one seemed worried by it. He continued to watch as everyone continued to be very casual about the entire affair. Eventually, he made himself turn back to his food. It was irrational to be afraid of this. Really, it wasn't even where it could be seen. How bad could it hurt him?

So, with some effort, he went back to picking at his food. Nopw that he was forcing his attention on it, he actually began to eat more than when he'd first started at it.

CARMEN!?

Unread postby pd Rydia » Sat Apr 16, 2005 4:57 am

"If there's really no way else to do it," Dia began, "I could see if I couldn't try to summon him." For some reason, she sounded oddly reluctant about the matter, but hey, she was offering. She looked over for approval to Paige, over whose arm Fluffy was currently drooling in his sleep.

What in the gods name are they doing?!

"You've given the thing his food, haven't you? We've done our party as "good, caring folk." Let's not summon an extra-planar , magic gobbling being the ship that's responsible for keeping us afloat, shall we?"

Even though he was making an effort to keep calm, it was apparent he was getting frustrated with some of the others' boundless curiosity. Didn't they know it was always the curious mage who annihilated his tower in a blast of purple flame?

"You could, I suppose," Kelne said, sensing that the idea wasn't exactly riding a wave of support, "But Jak's right - we're under no obligation to, and this isn't the place for it in any case. I'm inclined to simply keep on playing dumb on the point, and see if it drops the issue. After all, by its own logic, it shouldn't be desperately hungry in the first place."

Unless of course, it had an ulterior motive here. Although he didn't think it was deceiving him, it seemed oddly insistent on someone crossing the planar boundary. Then again, if someone like, say, the Neo-Vane mages, were suddenly contacted by a strange extraplanar creature, they'd have a thousand and one questions for it. And there wouldn't be a shred of malice behind them.

Odd. He wouldn't have thought, going into this, that he'd wind up sympathising with the creature's point of view.

They don't actually have much in the way of aether. He sighed, One of the major problems here is that we just don't have much of a common frame of reference. I'm going to show you something. So saying, he turned his gaze on the room at large, and transmitted a direct visual feed to the creature.

This is what our plane looks like. Well, this part of it, anyway.

What...the...

Kelne finds the poor thing is at a loss not only for words, but for thoughts. Still, he is mentally agile enough to figure out that what seems to confound the astral creature the most is the presense of all the defined lines and hard angles, as well as the proliferation of objects in general.

Apparently, compared to the mortal realms, the Astral does not have much in the way of solids.

That was the inside of our ship. It's a large, constructed object that we use for traveling. I should mention that there's almost no aether involved in its construction. Would you like a wider scale image of the world at large? It'd probably be a bit less disorienting, if still rather strange.

"And this," he murmured as an aside to Dia, who he presumed was still listening in, "Is why this probably isn't the best place for a summoning."

Ah, but does anyone you've had any experience with in the past have that good an imagination?

Leaving it as a rhetorical question, Kelne closed his eyes, and set about showing the creature the world. An image of the open ocean, seen from a short distance above the wavetops. Rolling green swells beneath a clear blue sky, the flat line of the horizon in all directions, the bright light of the sun overhead.

After leaving that in place for a few moments, he added in the airship, rising and falling with the swells in the middle distance. The ship, he said by way of explanation, And myself, he concluded, adding in an image of himself standing on his carpet looking out over it all.

Picking up on what was going on, Dia added in her own thoughts.

'That's what I meant,' Dia added, 'when I said that "this was how I should look like to you." On your end of things, you only see the auras of Kelne, myself, and the rest of the crew. On our end, we have a corresponding physical body that the aura is attached to. We live in this plane, after all.'

With any luck, the things she had been saying would begin to add up in the thing's mind as consistent.

Kelne considered the request. On the one hand, nothing had really changed. On the other... "You're certain you can dismiss it at will?" He asked Dia, "I can put a bit of distance between us and the ship easily enough."

Why would we do that?

"I like to have a clear view of my options," Kelne said, "Summoning it may be a viable one, if we do it away from the ship. As things stand, if we don't come up with something, I suspect it will follow us for days on end just to satisfy its curiosity."

"The question,"

Says the besmirched high ranking guard and mazoku, staring at his bowl of stew,

"Is if you think it's safe to bring it over. Especially using methods you're not already certain will be entirely safe for it. It'd be much better to offend it by refusing to let it over than to maybe kill it, and possibly damage the ship again..."

And with that he keeps looking at his bowl of stew, while ebating going to the group's quarters an napping for a few days.

"That's how summoning works. Even spells that get out of control only last for so long."

Dia sighed. "Not all summons are hellhounds. Some of them are like Meph, or...well, Fluffy." Dia waved a hand at the drooling, napping lapdragon.

In any case, it doesn't look like we're going to be able to bring you here. There's also the issue of your safety if we could. We have no idea how things like gravity, for instance, would affect you.

"Consider your objections noted, and the idea shelved," Kelne said. They might at least credit him with the ability to tell a homicidal maniac when he touched minds with one, even if it was an extraplanar one.
