Xiao Long successfully opened the lock, and found inside a shiny gold amulet with a ruby set in it.

(OOC: I'm all for going ahead. There's nothing Xiao Long can do to mess with the amulet.)

(OOC: = ( )

Xiao Long saw the amulet and her eyes went wide with disbelief, the way most females do when they encounter anything shiny and expensive. After some thought, though, Xiao Long decided to put it back, realizing that Seryntas would have her head if she took it.

Seryntas finished the work on the last of the graves. "All right," he said, returning for his equipment. "Let's get a move on."

Kilisha nodded at Seryntas' suggestion, and soon the group was off.

After reaching the bottom of the mountain's northern side, Jeshua stopped to say a word.

"As I said before, the territory we are about to traverse will be hostile," he began. "It is likely that we will encounter more patrols. We should avoid detection by these parties, but if we cannot, then we will have to employ lethal force to neutralize them."

He glanced at Seryntas for a second.

"I know you didn't like killing those incubi while they were unconscious, so I would recommend that you kill them in battle next time."

The wizard then turned to face north, but before he began walking again, he would call for an acknowledgement of his words from his mercenaries.

"Is that clear?"

Seryntas glanced over to Kilisha and grimaced. He didn't approve of what Jeshua said, but employment was employment. "I understand."

"Yuppers," she said cheerfully, hopin gthat her cheery attitude would spread through the group. A quick look around showed that what the way she'd replied had been rather out of place and unappropriate.

Seryntas shot Xiao Long a look and shook his head slightly. "Kids..." he sighed under his breath.

Kilisha stared blankly at Xiao Long for a while, then finally just shook her head slowly and let out a sigh.

"I like that enthusiasm!" was Jeshua's reply.

... Without much more hesitation, the group resumed its march north through a tree-filled valley that lay between two ridges. After about an hour's travel, the echo of a loud crash was heard from behind. Kilisha spun around to see what had happened and saw several tentacles reaching out of the top of the mountain they had come down from. These tentacles wouldn't have reached the group even if they had only been at the bottom of the mountain, but after waving around in the air for a few seconds, they still started reaching straight toward the succubus. The sight was enough to turn Kilisha pale.

"Looks like that thing's recovered," said Jeshua. "We'd better not go back that way."

Just as soon as Jeshua had spoken, several wolf-like howls were heard from all around.

Seryntas was no great fan of wolves, a fact he reflected on as he unsheathed his sword. And I'm still worn out from that damned digging, too, he grumbled silently to himself.

Xiao Long heard the howling and said to herself, in her mind, Yay, doggies... While she'd lived in the wild, she had to fend off wolves so she felt confidant tat she could take care of them.

She looked at Seryntas, and saw that he was still slightly fatigued fromt he digging. She took out her bow and nocked an arrow to the string, knowing that she'd have to do the brunt of the fighting. Thankfully, though, she hadn't done much of anything while the big warrior was off digging, so she was completely unfatigued, besides from all the walking.

Kilisha readied her bow as well. The fact that the sun had already fallen behind the ridge to the west didn't make her very happy right now.

"Let's keep moving," Jeshua said, continuing to walk but doing so more cautiously. "And keep a close lookout all around."

He then pointed his staff at the succubus.

"Here," he said.

Suddenly, the tentacles stopped pointing straight at Kilisha and began to search about in confusion.

Xiao Long looked at the mage in confusion. "What did you do?" she asked. She watched as the tentacles continue to search for the succubus. The memory of those tentacles was rather vile from back in that tunnel. Hope, I don't have to fight those things again... she thought.

The group continued moving as Jeshua had ordered. A few minutes passed and they covered a decent distance before they encountered their first pack of wolves.

As the group was passing by a large patch of shrubbery, three large black wolves leapt out and came straight towards them. Fortunately, Kilisha had been watching the bushes. She fired an arrow, hitting one wolf in the shoulder. After letting out a yelp of pain, this wolf slowed down to a limp, but the other two continued their dash.

Seryntas lept forward to take the full force of at least one of the wolves - he tried to get the other, too, but it didn't seem like he would. Either way he probably wouldn't be able to stay on his feet, but at least wolves can't bite through mithril.

Xiao Long fired off two arrows at a time, hoping to hit the third of the pack. She kept firing, running parrallel to the beast.

One of the wolves leapt at Seryntas with the intent of going for his throat. The other charging wolf dodged around him but was hit in the side by one of Xiao Long's arrows and knocked down by the force behind it.

(OOC: It could be that I'm being a little anal, but it would be easier for me if Darknight wouldn't have his character attacking quite as many times in one post, since it's fairly difficult to GM the effects of that.)

((= \ Sorry, I'll keep the number of attacks down to under two per post...))

Xiao Long ran over to the wounded animal and attempted to put it out of it's misery with an arrow to the head. She held it in her hand and plunged it downwards, then nocked the same arrow.

(OOC: That's almost precisely what I told him when he bitched about me never letting Tur'nasus hit anybody in On Two Fronts. My response: "Dude, you're firing four arrows in the span of three seconds, not telling the GM which enemies you're aiming at, and you expect to score a hit? Against whom?")

Seryntas lifted an armored arm to block the charge at his throat and swung, trying to crack the canine in the jaw.

Xiao Long's arrow stabbed through the side of the wolf's neck, through some important blood vessels, and into its wind pipe. The creature thrashed around on the ground for a moment and let out a sound that was half gurgle and half whine, then became still.

The wolf that had chosen Serentas as its target bit down onto his arm, but succeeded only in breaking one of its own teeth, failing to penetrate the armor. It was then hit in the jaw by the large man's fist, resulting in a painful fracture of its jawbone. The creature dropped to the ground and turned to flee.

As Jeshua saw the wolf start to run, he frowned at the animal's cowardice. Leveling his staff, he released an icy bolt which sped toward the fleeing creature, barely missed the armored mercenary, and finally stabbed into one of its target's hind legs. A coating of ice then spread over the creature and solidified it.

Kilisha, having nocked another arrow, fired it at the same creature that she had injured moments before. This time the missile, having been aimed more carefully, drove into the canine near the base of its neck. The wolf made no sound, as the shaft had pierced through its larynx, but simply fell foward and then onto its side.

Xiao Long took the now bloody arrow, nocked it, and fired it at the wolf whose leg had been frozen by the mage's frosty attack. As the arrow screamed through the air, it trailed wolf's blood. Xiao Long then dropped her bow and readied her jians, ready to charge in and attack if her arrow missed.

Seryntas glanced back to Jeshua, raising an eyebrow at the close call with the ice spell, then dashed up to the frozen wolf and slammed his full weight on it, attempting to shatter it.

(OOC: When we last saw our heroes, they defeated the first pack of wolves that attacked them, but were soon caught up to and attacked by a second pack. While fighting this second group, Xiao Long's arm was broken by a fearsome bite. Seryntas and Kilisha managed to kill the two wolves responsible, but the remaining three began to circle them while even more wolves were heard approaching. Seryntas and Kilisha took up a defensive position around Xiao Long, and Seryntas began to wonder what Jeshua was up to.)

"You don't expect a poor, run-down old man like me to fight all these monstrous beasts, do you?" Jeshua asked Seryntas, looking down from a high tree branch he had somehow climbed up to.

"Yeah," Kilisha said quietly as she readied another arrow. "He might... throw his back out."

"You be quiet," said Jeshua.

Meanwhile, the three wolves kept their distance as they continued to circle the three on the ground, apparently waiting for the rest of their friends to arrive.

"Well, there goes that thought," Xiao Long scoffed, keeping her eyes trained on the wolves. Her left arm hurt like crazy, but she tried incessantly to get the pain out of her head. She hefted the jian in her right hand and was ready to attack.

Re: The Next Crisis

Kilisha agreed with [not Jagen]'s suggestion to stay sharp. As she watched the wolves circle, she knew that the arrival of the rest of the pack wouldn't help her own party's chances any. They needed to deal with these three wolves now so that they would at least have three less to deal with later.

So, hoping to get the wolves to attack so that the group could deal with them without breaking their defensive formation, Kilisha took aim and fired an arrow. This time, luck shined on the succubus as the missile hit its target and pierced through the wolf's throat. As a result, the other two saw that waiting their prey out wasn't an option, so they dashed forward to attack, one moving toward the weakened Xiao Long and the other toward the succubus who no longer had an arrow ready.

Xiao Long was definitely weakened, but not out. She saw the wolf's attack and hefted her sword, hopefully ducking the wolf's vice-like teeth and bringing her sword in an uppercut motion to cut the canine's throat.

Taken by Xiao Long's attack, the wolf that had dashed at her was the next to fall, its throat now torn open.

Kilisha, meanwhile, may have been without an arrow in her bow, but that bow was still not unable to protect her. As the wolf lept at her, she swung her weapon at the creature and knocked it aside, then delivered a hard kick and knocked the creature to the ground, thereby stunning it momentarily.

Xiao Long saw the stunned wolf that Kilisha had smacked and ran over, trying to plunge her now extremely bloody sword into the wolf. She also tried to buy enough time for the succubus to nock and arrow.

Seethe347

Re: The Next Crisis

The wolf yelped as the sword plunged through it's shoulder. The animal struggled to get up, but couldn't stand the pain of pushing against the blade. This gave Kilisha enough time to get another arrow into her bow, which she then fired straight into the wolf's side. It's heart pierced, the creature died quickly.

But as the last breath left the creature, Kilisha looked up from it and saw the friends it had been waiting for now arriving. Her heart sank, as the group that now stalked out of the trees was made up of no less than thirty of the animals. They didn't charge immediately, but made first to surround the three mercenaries.

"I... don't see... any way out of this," Kilisha said nervously.

But just as she spoke, she heard a loud shout, sounding like a war-cry of a snarling, grisly nature, from behind her. Startled, she spun to see what had made the noise.

What she saw was a squad of orcish warriors dashing out of the foliage. Turning pale, Kilisha fumbled with an arrow. But, before she could nock it, she saw that the orcs weren't moving towards her party. Instead, they dashed widely around the three and set upon the wolves. After a brief fight, several wolves lay dead as the rest scattered and fled.

(OOC: Jagen, huh? Mixing up your RPs?

Personally, I think Jagen would have an easier time here than Seryntas and company. After all, he can fly. And shoot lightning.)

Seryntas lowered his sword - not because he saw no danger, but because the damn thing was heavy and he was tired. He'd worked with orcs and against orcs, and he knew what they were capable of if they turned on them. Still, any respite was a good one. "Either of you girls speak GwaAAGi?" he mumbled.

Kilisha shook her head slowly.

"No... afraid I don't..." she said.

However, as soon as the orcs were satisfied that the wolve's would not be any more of a problem, the largest of the group, apparently the leader, turned and moved slowly towards the group, his battle-axe lowered and held in only one hand.

"I... know common... some... But not live... in GwaAAG," said the orc, its voice like a growling animal and its Common less practiced than Kilisha's. "You... come with... See boss."

Xiao Long, after seeing the orcs come and bash the hell out of the wolves promptly sat down on the dirt, throwing her sword to the ground, and nursed he wound. Now that the adrenaline wasn't pumping so much, her arm hurt more and more.

"Owie!" She cried, then got up and walked over to her bag. She pulled out some cloth that she had no use for and attempted to fashion a quasi-sling with one hand. The endeavour was quite unsuccessful.

"Maybe they'll help us if we go with them," Jeshua said. "At least, I would like to know why they're interested in us."

After watching Xiao Long's attempt to make a sling, Kilisha knelt down next to her.

"Do you... think you can make it to... wherever the orcs are holed up?" she asked.

"Alright," Kilisha said as she took the cloth.

She didn't really have any medical experience, but she had seen a few slings in her time, and she thought they seemed simple enough. So, she tied the two ends together, hung the cloth over Xiao Long's head, and pulled the bottom out wide.

"Can you put your arm through... or should I?" Kilisha asked, not sure if it was a good idea to try to move someone else's broken arm, but also not sure if Xiao Long would be able to move it herself.
