Solis cried out in fear at Aya's sudden and unexpected outburst. Covering his ears and trying to hold on to the squirming mass of Azul in his shirt (No mean feat), he managed to glomp Squintz's leg tightly, wailing. His own cries of "SCARY SCARY SCARY" coupled with Azul's telepathy into his brain. But... noticing that the man had gone and the cursing had stopped, Solis relaxed somewhat.

'P...P...please don't do that Miss Aya!!!' he whined into her head.

Of course, he still retained his firm grip onto Squintz's leg. Just in case.

Squintz tried not to show the extreme discomfort that having his leg in a death grip tended to create. Why do all the children seem to go straight to me? Squintz stood still, hoping that Solis would let go soon.

Aya took a deep breath, closing her eyes, "Eh heh....sorry about that kiddo.....anywho, let's get going to find this artifact that will supposedly help us out....erm...which way is east?"

Squintz chuckled, pointing in the direction the old man had done. "That way's east."

"Good! East we go then!" she nodded to the group and head off in that direction, but paused after taking a few steps....

"Oh um...sorry about all the yelling Solis...um...the little old man made me very very angry...."

Good thing Squintz knows where he's going...

After a few hours of travel, the group arrived outside a small yet apparently fairly well-off town. Row after row of brick and wooden homes lined the dirt and gravel streets, and crowds of people mingled in the open air, chitchatting loudly about irritating neighbors, the price of grain and produce, the weather, or simply nothing at all, talking to revel in the sound of their own voices as so many people do. Everyone, and in general, everything, seemed rather friendly and welcoming on the surface.

A large dog trotted happily over to the three and made its presence more well known with an excited "woof!"

Squintz looked down, then reached carefully down to pet the dog. He loved animals. "Awww..how cute!" Squintz had a big grin on his face.

"Hmm..." Aya glanced around idilly, "Now where would they keep this thing, maybe they'll just let us borrow it...." Though I'd much rather keep it...

The dog barked happily, pouncing upon Squintz and excitedly licking at his face. "RUFF!" he exclaimed, lapping at the sweat on the warrior's brow, sopping it all up with his rather large and equally wet tongue.

Aya glanced around, wondering where the artifact she had come looking for might be kept--and, in a strange manner of answering her question, she found herself staring at a very well dressed man with an oddly shaped scar running across his forehead. He smiled at her, brushing back a shock of blonde hair, and extended a hand.

"Good day. Welcome to Yttria, travelers."

Now, back on the boat...

Unread postby Divinegon2130 » Tue Jun 18, 2002 9:31 pm

(OOC: Meanwhile...)

Derill felt the ink spray not only onto the deck, but onto him as well. Yuck... he thought, as he tried to figure out how to remove the mess.

He didn't care as much about the blackness covering his body as Mahou had. But it was still disgusting to be sprayed by some vile sea creature. That's when Derill noticed Mahou curled up on the deck of the boat.

Derill was wondering what he should do. Examine the severed tentacle, or see if something was wrong with Mahou? He took the latter approach, gasped, and then went at an almost complete sprint in Mahou's direction, slowing down as he came close.

"Are you alright?" Derill asked Mahou, as he kneeled down next to her.

The man blinked at Solis and the rest of the crew. "Well," he announced, "my name is Pratt, and I'm a representative of Mayor Engrate. I happened to be looking for someone who might be able to do us a favor, and I was out with my dog, Trevor, running around searching for people..."

He glanced at the dog with a smile, and the dog ignored his master completely, continuing to give Squintz a vigorous tongue bath, whether he needed it or not.

"You folks seem to be good with animals," he noted, flashing a smile.

Squintz tried to maneuver his way from the licking dog long enough to speak. He knew that doing a favor for someone was usually the best way to earn respect and possibly a favor back. "Thank you. Anyway, Mister Pratt, what are you trying to do? We might be able to help.."

"Oh, not who," the man chuckled. "You see..."

He glanced around shiftly, as though he were about to divulge utterly top secret information, such as why hot dogs came in packages of ten and buns in packages of eight, which side a cat with toast with jelly strapped to its back would land on, or why there were intercontinental roads in Argovia.

"The mayor's son wants a unicorn for his birthday."

He blinked. "An audience with the mayor...absolutely. Are the three of you together?"

"Yes, miss Aya" said Solis "But... I was wondering.... will there be CANDY in the mayor's office? Or Sandwiches, perhaps?" He licked his lips greedily at the thought of anything involving candy... heck, food of ANY sort.

Moving right along...

Unread postby Archmage144 » Thu Jun 20, 2002 7:15 pm

After a short walk, Solis, Aya, and Squintz, following right behind Pratt, had arrived at the office of the mayor. Unlike in some larger, more prosperous towns, said office was far from highly extravagant. Instead, it appeared to be the sort of place the villagers of the area got together and threw together for the hell of it, just because someone decided "well, we have to have a town hall."

It was a fairly small building, yet still larger than most homes. However, despite the lack of visible extravagance, it was apparent that the mayor probably had a bit of money. Out behind the building, which probably doubled as the mayor's place of residence, was what resembled a child's fantasy. Play equipment and toys were literally strewn everywhere, causing most casual observers to wonder if the inhabitants of the building were entirely sane--or if they had children. One, some might surmise, lead to the other, though perhaps in reverse order.

"This is the mayor's domacile," Pratt announced with a slight smile. "From here, he conducts all of his business...a lot of which has to do with making sure his 11 year old son is happy." He smirked, as though entertaining some private joke.

After a moment of hesitation, he lead everyone inside, dragging the group into something that could easily have illustrated every parent's worst nightmare. Well, perhaps not the worst, but a far cry from perfection. Toys and games were, as in the backyard, spread out all over the house. It was impossible to understand how anyone managed to get any work done.

Pratt paused to pick up a small ball before anyone tripped and fell over it.

"Make yourselves comfortable for a minute. I'll go get the mayor," announced Pratt.

Meanwhile, as Mahou located the necessary facilities for cleaning the utterly vile, viscous ink off her body, Darin seated himself against the mast of the ship and stared into the clouds.

At least, he thought, no one had to die.

"Whoah...." Aya stared at the mass of various toys and playthings, "This mayor must be like....loaded to bear...wow...that and very focus on his kid, how can he play with all of this stuff!" Better yet, does he play with all this stuff...

"Oh sweet! One of these, I love these things!" Aya bent over, scooping up what appeared to me a metal sort of chain connecting two horseshoes and a steel ring around both of the chains. Now immersed in her own world, Aya began to tinker with the object, trying to remove the ring.

Squintz was never one to play with toys, though he did enjoy the things. He looked at several of them carefully, as if he was looking to see what would be good for a child of his. He waited, standing and smiling to himself. It looked like the mayor really cared for his son, which was good.

Derill would have taken this statement badly, except that he had other business to worry about. He stood up, and turned toward the severed tentacle that was (hopefully) still on the deck.

What WAS this thing attacking us? Derill thought as he approached said tentacle.

(OOC: That is, if it wasn't pushed off deck by anyone else.)

Derill bent over to examine the lopped off tentacle, finding it to be similar to the tentacles of any other squidlike creature he had encountered in his life. A row of tiny suction cups lined the bottom of the tentacle, a thick, ropy appendage.

Solis' eyes widened as he looked around at all the LOVELY toys that he saw strewn around the room. "Woooow... all these.... Wonderful.... TOYS!!!" And with that Solis went from pile to pile trying out toys here and there. "Ooooh. A King Cecil Plushie!!! And a couple really nice marbles!!! And a Chess set... I still don't know how to play that... and Oooh... a YO YO!!!!"

Thoroughly distracted, Solis started having fun on his own, ignoring pretty much everyone around him for the moment.

Derill looked at the tentacle, then thought about the ink that had squirted onto him. That's quite a big octopus that came to this boat, Derill thought.

Of course, he'd have to get the ink off before long. So, Derill looked around to find the facilities necessary to clean off the ink that had sprayed onto him.

'Cause if he came to a town looking like he was now...

(OK, as to explain why I haven't exactly been vigilant GM wise...the last two days, including today, I've spent a good portion of my time doing physical labor. Saturday I hauled railroad track sections for something like 8 hours. ^^;; So that's why--yesterday, I was far too tired to do much.)

Derill, being fairly aware of the layout of the boat by now, located a bathing facility of his own quite quickly after asking only one person which direction he might have to travel.

After a few minutes, a harried, stressed, yet somehow still happy-looking man arrived in the living room with Solis, Aya, and Squintz. He smiled meekly at the three of them, chuckling a bit to himself seeing Solis absorbed in playing with the mess of toys strewn across the floor and room.

"I see your son likes my son's playthings," he grinned, nodding at Solis and Aya.

The man, who Squintz and Aya presumed to be the mayor (Solis was far too busy to even think about it), seated himself near the others on a rather long, plush couch and wrung his hands quietly. After a moment of awkward silence, he spoke.

"Why are you three here?"

"Meep meep? Griao?" Azul climbed up and perched on Solis's shoulder, peering at all the toys. 'Food?' he asked uncertainly, eyeing the playthings skeptically. They didn't look like sandwiches...

"Wha? Oh hi!" Aya pipped up, looking to the mayor, her hands continuing to clumsily fiddle with the puzzle, "Oh, well we heard from a ....local...that this town houses an important artifact that could be useful to us....you see we're a group of adventurers .... sent by the royal family to eliminate a lich warlord. Now...according to one of the local townsfolk, your son's birthday approaches and one of the items on his list appears to be a unicorn...now I was thinking...." Aya smiled her most winning smile, "That maybe if we did a little favor for you and caught you a unicorn, do you think you'd allow us to borrow this artifact?"

Aya smiled again, her hands still fiddling with the metal puzzle, despite the fact that, unaware to her the ring she was to remove had slid off during the course of her negotiating, and now rested at her feet.

And now, Squintz shall mentally beat himself up.

Squintz laughed inwardly when the mayor had called Solis the Queen's son. But that train of thought led him to its inevitable course: Wait...does that mean he thinks I'M the father?O_o;;; Squintz shuddered a bit. Sure, the queen's beautiful...NO! NO! You're MARRIED! With a WIFE! SHE'S beautiful too! STOP! NO IMPURE THOUGHTS! >___<

After calming himself down, Squintz nodded and added to what Aya had said. "Basically what she said. However, where would we find a Unicorn?"

"You know," the mayor chuckled, "if I knew that myself, I'd not have to hire people like you to go find one. But then, I guess I do have some idea. There've been rumored unicorn sightings out in the woods. Why don't I..."

He wandered over to a bookshelf, his slight pudge put on from too many years of sitting at a desk wiggling as he knelt down, and pulled a rather large and heavy book from the shelf. He opened the book, licked his finger, and began flipping through the pages.

After a moment, he came to a picture of three animals, an artist's rendition of the beasts. One resembled a gleaming white stallion with a golden horn and a gorgeous mane. The next depicted a grey, pony-like beast, with a similar horn. The third illustrated a coal black monstrosity with reddish, firey eyes and a blood-red horn to match.

"Three species of unicorns live in the woods nearby, and all of them have been sighted at one time or another. The white ones tend to be fairly friendly, yet wild, whereas the black ones are as evil as sin."

Squintz nodded. "I assume your son wants the white Unicorn, then." Well, it was EXTREMELY obvious that no kid would ever want an evil unicorn...but Squintz had met some children that probably would have been better suited for one. Well, like it or not, this kid was getting a white furred unicorn, because Squintz wasn't about to associate with an evil beast.

"Well of course..." Aya nodded in agreement with Squintz, "This just a book for pictures or is there a bit of information on these species in there also? I've never seen the evil versions before....." She eyed the picture with great curiosity.

I wonder if that old old virgin legend thing still works...it seemed to back in Ayenee but this isn't Ayenee...

Squintz tried to think. He remembered faintly that unicorns were attracted to virgins..but that might have been a myth. But even if they were, he knew that the Queen had a daughter, so SHE wasn't a virgin. Squintz wasn't a virgin, either. Unless morals had REALLY slipped, though, Solis should be a virgin. Well, it was better than nothing.

Aya craned her neck to peer into the book.

"A unicorn's horn is said to have remarkable healing powers, and often, poachers will kill the beasts, remove their horns, and leave the corpses to rot in the middle of the forests. The horn of a black unicorn, on the other hand, is said to be usable to make a highly damaging toxin when ground into a fine powder and mixed with a filler."

Solis looked up from his play at Aya, something bothering him. 'No, Azul. These are toys. They're fun to play with, see?'

"Umm... Miss Aya, I was just wondering....." he started. Proudly holding up a cute little plush of an odd man in a brown suit with an odd mask and a red cape that was frowning, Solis asked. "Do you think that other type of unicorn would like to play with Grahf, miss Aya?"
