Mahou gave the burly sailor a cold glare of warning and boarded the ship. Having lived on an island and close to ships she was fairly familiar with the parts. She sat on a barrel and rested her head on her hand.

"Looks seaworthy. That's good. We don't need to swim unneccesarily to Veran." Mahou pulled out a small book from a pouch at her waist and began reading it.

Derill boarded the ship, not really looking at the burly sailor. He hadn't known for a long time what islands or boats were like, but he didn't bother to familiarize himself with the parts just yet.

He took a seat on another barrel, staying at quite a distance from Mahou if at all possible, and looked around from where he was. If there was enough room, he'd even stretch out a bit.

He was impressed by the view he was getting... even if it wasn't that much yet.

Aya sighed, already the other group had left and got on their way. Of all the things she certainly didn't want little miss bounty hunter offing their necromancer before she could do in the one they were fighting.

"C'mon Solis..."

"Ummm... Umm...." Solis looked at the many bottles arrayed on the shelves. They were all very pretty to him. So pretty, in fact, that he didn't know which ones to choose. He thought about it for a moment... then decided on something.

"Miss Aya? Which of these pretty potion thingies do you think I should buy?"

After a good eight hours or so of traveling, time that Darin used to better acquaint himself with the ceiling, something interesting finally happened to the three adventurers on the boat.

Suddenly, the boat shook, and stopped dead in the water. It obviously wasn't going anywhere. The question was, however, why...

Mahou lurched forward in her seat at the sudden jolt, almost falling flat on her face in a very undignified manner. Darin, sitting fairly close by, shook it off and stood up to glance over at her.

"Perhaps there is something wrong?"

mheef!

Unread postby pd Rydia » Tue Jun 11, 2002 1:00 pm

Azul trotted over to Solis, toting a (now badly-chewed) coin in his mouth. "Mheef!" he suggested, voice muffled by the coin.

'Buy some of the happy plant it smells real good I bet it'd make good sandwiches!' He telepathed happily to Solis (and anyone else who happened to be nearby).

Beginning to get a bit fed up and having trouble keeping her temper under control, Aya strolled over to the shelf, pulling a weak potion in a purple glass bottle, and plunking into Solis's hands.

"How about this one? You can get this one..." ^_^##

Chuckling a bit, the storekeeper took Solis's money and smiled faintly at the little kid. "You son seems like a nice boy, miss," he smirked at Aya. "I hope you folks are satisfied!"

(Aaaand...whenever this group of Solis, Aya, and Squintz are able, we'll move on. I think Squintz is having troubles, though, and Divinegon's gone too...this RP might be somewhat on hold for a bit, I don't know.)

(I'm not having troubles now. It was just a bluff.)

Squintz smiled back at Aya, humming a tune quietly.

"Whenever you all are ready," Squintz said.

(OOC: Yer a day early, AM. Today I can still be on a little. Tomorrow is when my flight leaves. Also, AM, you may want to check the serious forum for a moment if you have not already done so.)

Derill, feeling the boat suddenly stop, stood up. He realized that there was something amiss going on. The question was what that thing was.

Once he stood up, he started to look around, feeling for his weapons. Could there be a monster stopping the ship? Perhaps some of these undead he'd been hearing of?

Mahou snapped to her feet. She glared around the ship."Dammit! What now!?" She looked around. Then at Darin. "Yes, time mage, something is wrong. Whatever it is will probably be annoying."

Darin, calm, passive, and probably more knowledgeable than he let on (as always), glanced over toward the stairway up to the deck of the ship in a faraway manner. "It might be best, then, to observe things from the deck?"

Mahou nodded and proceeded immediately up the stairs, taking themn to at a time. She looked around at the deck, at the sky and sea. She reached back behind her to pull out her ninjato. Hand on sword, mind alert, and lips ready to utter a spell, Mahou felt prepared.

"You don't have to call me 'sir.' I was never formally knighted." Squintz smirked a bit. "Anyway, yes, the way is North. I suggest that we get moving, just so the others don't get to far ahead of us." Squintz stopped leaning against the walls and stood straight, ready.

Meanwhile, Mahou glanced around the deck, Darin close behind--and Derill as well, as his sense of curiosity had overwhelmed him.

After taking a few steps forward, the Alahi drow whirled around...and found herself staring face to face with a rather large, squidlike creature that had a number of tentacles wrapped around the boat.

"I thought you said these waters were safe!" someone cried out, the screams of passengers in the background.

The reply of someone who was most likely the ship's captain, or else one of its employees, yelled back in irritation, "they are, when we aren't under attack!"

(Combat order is Mahou, the Lake Squid creature, Derill, and Darin.)

(I'll get to the other group later--I need to think some things over.)

Calamari with marinara sauce....

Unread postby Nekogami » Thu Jun 13, 2002 12:03 pm

Mahou let go of her sword and began chanting the words to a spell. Her forearms grew warms and her fingertips burned but she had been taught never to fear the power of a spell.

Deep eternal fire, to my hands I beckon. Beyond the Gates of Styx, judgement rain. FIREBOLT!

She concentrated her sight on the gigantic squid as she clapped her hands together and sent stream of searing fire towards its head.

Calimari is right...

Unread postby Archmage144 » Thu Jun 13, 2002 12:35 pm

The flamethrower-like burst from Mahou's fingertips seared the squid quite badly, causing it to squeal in a beastial roar of pain. The creature's ordinarily somewhat moist flesh dried out under the heat of the attack, causing some minor discomfort in addition to the already damaging burns.

(40 damage, a critical hit. Mahou is at 72/80 MP.)

Angered by Mahou, the squid decided to retaliate, sweeping a tentacle across the deck at the elf. Struck in the lower body by the appendage, Mahou collapsed abruptly, slamming into the deck. The creature lashed out, groping wildly to attempt a grapple and constrict Mahou, but she managed to squirm out of the way quickly.

(Mahou suffers 25 points of damage. 35/60 HP.)

Derill, being fairly perceptive, decided to attempt a lightning attack against the squid. It lived in water. Why not?

He focused, applying his will on his aura and the mana stream around him...and, much to his dismay, absolutely nothing happened.

(Whoops, in my business, we call that "spell failure." Derill attempted to cast Zap, so he's down to 100/110 MP.)

Darin, on the other hand, was particularly displeased with the intrusion of a rather large squid into his voyage across the sea.

"I don't appreciate...you...hurting my friend!" Darin's eyes glowed faintly as he glanced up at the squid, which stared back with a fair degree of contempt.

Darin raised his hands into the air and began to chant.

"Spirits of time, I request your aid! Stagnate the passage of time, and benefit our cause...SLOW!"

A pale white aura engulfed the squid-creature, and, interestingly, it seemed to be unable to move quite so quickly, and it was thrashing far less violently...

(The squid is slowed, will act at end of round for up to 6 turns, and it can't move quite so well, so it'll suffer penalties. -2/-2 to AT/PA.)

(Mahou's turn.)

Gritting her teeth, Mahou struggled to stand. She gripped her ninjato from behind her and held it poised in front of her.

"I'll cut the damned tentacle off! HYAH!" She sped toward the squid, full steam ahead. She stopped abruptly and crouched low, her eyes locked on a tentacle waving above her. She jumped up and spun her body to dodge the flailing appendage and slice it as she came around.

With a vicious slash, Mahou lopped off one of the creature's tentacles, causing it to roar in anguish. Frustrated by this turn of events, and coming to the realization that there were apparently easier meals to capture elsewhere, the beast released the boat and sprayed an enormous blast of ink into the air, soaking a large portion of the deck (and those standing on it) in a slightly gooey black mess. Immediately afterwards, the beast released the boat, fired its siphon, and (slowly) jetted away from the passenger ship. The severed tentacle flopped around on the deck for a moment, and then, after said moment had passed, lay completely still.

(Everybody gets 120 XP. ^_^)

Mahou landed as the squid sprayed ink. She looked down at herself, disgusted at first until she saw that her hands and arms were black.

Black like them. Black like the darkness. Black like the shadows. Black like evil.

She felt sick and, in a momen of weakness, lunged over to the side of the boat and wretched. She supported her weight on the damp, salty wood for a moment then slunk to the deck floor.

The thought of the blackness made her shiver. So she curled up into a ball and said nothing when anyone approached.

On the other side of the adventure...

Unread postby Archmage144 » Thu Jun 13, 2002 3:20 pm

Thusly, Aya, Squintz, and Solis (with a lot of pushing and adult intervention) set off northwards, towards the barrows that the lich was rumored to be hiding in. After a bit of walking on a forest path, the form of a very pale, very withered man cropped up in front of them on the road.

"Halt!" he rasped.

The old guy stood straight up, apparently straining to do so. He extended his hand, and a walking stick zipped into existence, materializing in his grip and allowing him to support himself quite a bit more easily.

After a moment, he reached up and pulled back his hood, the grey robes he wore fitting him like an oversized dress on a skeleton. He hunched over on his newfound walking stick, his owlish eyes and hooked nose punctuating his rather decript features. A shock of silvery hair sprouted from the top of his head in wild tangles like that of a poorly upkept garden hedge.

"Where are you going?" he crowed, his voice rather feeble, yet audible.

He curled his lips into a sneer and smiled thinly at Aya.

"What gives you the right to say that anyways you shrivled little prune!"

"You forget, miss," the old fellow mused whimsically, "that a lich never rides alone. The horrors that await are indescribable by my unworthy tongue. However, one utterly unequipped to handle the dead, like yourself, will suffer and perish, tortured at the hands of a master of the flow of negative energy."

"Some of the things a lich can do," the old man smirked, "have given lesser beings than yourselves nightmares from the day they encountered the abominations to the day they were buried beneath Gaera's soil."

The old man before the party shook his head violently. "Not one bit, you see," he muttered. "I have no desire to scare you away, necessarily. Instead," he rasped, "I wish to point you in a helpful direction."

"You see," he smirked, "I know of a powerful item which might help your quest. In fact, it isn't very far from here at all, only a slight trek off the road."

He smiled thinly. "Over that way," he said, pointing to the east, "is a small town, where they guard the relic you seek with their lives. Without it, you will surely fail."

The man smiled whimsically at Aya, closing one eye and waggling a finger at her affectionately. A faint glimmer in his open eye indicated that there was definitely more to him than the casual observer might have deduced.

"That...is a secret," he smirked, vanishing in a puff of grey smoke.

EVIL!

Unread postby LadyDragonClawsEDW » Sun Jun 16, 2002 12:01 pm

For some bizzare reason perhaps unknown to her other travelling companions, Aya flipped out. Her tail stuck out straight behind her, a long stream of curses in ryuuzoku pouring from her mouth with a few well known ones in common tossed here and there in her rant.

"GET BACK HERE YOU SHRIVLED LITTLE PRUNE!!!" Aya shook a fist at the place where the little man had once stood, "NOBODY SAYS THAT TO ME!!!"

Squintz just kind of stood there, gaping. He had never heard that many curses since...well...he had NEVER heard that many curses. He knew he might regret this, but he had to calm her down.

"It is okay...please calm down. Once we get to the town, we can find out what it does." Squintz nodded slowly, trying to sound as calm and friendly as possible.
