Ree sighed. "Yeah, but it's not one I particularly like. We'll have to see if we can scrounge up a set of clothes that the drow were wearing, first. Unless Saen kept one for herself."

Calhoun was leaning against a wall, reading a book. He glanced over, closing the novel and strode to the group, his cane clicking on the ground.

These people are going to need my help... being all along in the underground caves, with no inns to stay at nor cleric's to heal them. Indeed... they will need my assistance. And if I get an extra chunk of gil for my services, so be it Calhoun thought to himself.

"Well... room for one more?" The red mage said, a smirk coming over his face as he pushed his hat up a bit with the canesword. "I didn't get to try out any new spells on those drow yet." Aodhfin was now grinning.

"I wouldn't mind having a mage around, if no one else objects." Ree announced. However, he knew there was a possibility that others would want to hoard their gil. In which event... he'd just have to talk fast. REAL fast. And hopefully no one would notice that when he was done, Calhoun would still be with the group.

Seeing that Captain Briggins wasn't going to say anything more, Brandon looked around the gathered expectantly.

"Well, what's the plan, folks?" he asked. "I won't pretend to be a strategist...my specialty is using Alexander here." He hefted his sword in one hand lazily. "What about you chaps?"

Boreas inhaled deeply. "Well... currently, what I'm thinking is... there is one major thing that I have in common with the raiders. I'm thinking that if I can sneak in... I might find something that will give us a way to get at them, maybe even free the prisoners without a battle."

Larak rubbed his chin in thought. "Not a bad idea if ye can pull it off," he said, "But we should think about somethin' else, too. Prisoners'll slow them. If we can get ahead o' them, we can set ourselves a nice little ambush. How much did ye find out about where they came out o' the ground, Saen?"

The group that attacked here was composed of 30 or so, but some've been killed off as we know. Their leader, who's name I didn't get, wanted them to stay on the surface longer than they originally planned to continue "harvesting." They originally came from some drow city North of this place. Meaning we would have to go into the southern part of Riva. As for their base of operations on the surface.. all the guy could manage or spit at, doesn't matter, was 'North-east.' This was from our wounded drow by the way, the other one.. proved much more resiliant... but I had lots more fun with him ^_^."

"Aye, chief, but gettin' out without a fight doesn't exaclty pull off the second half o' the assignment. Not that I'm eager to take 'em all on at once, mind you, so I'm wonderin' what exactly 'as much damage as possible' is in this context." At that moment, Ratch peered at Larak. "O' course, we could just have our lil' friend here leave a trail of explosions behind us..."

Ratch's comment sparked an idea for Ree. "Yes. I think I see what you're saying. If they came out of the ground, they naturally have to go back in to get home. And dynamite has this funny way of making things collapse, as we saw earlier..." The drow threw a critical look at the dwarven demolitons expert. "Think you can collapse their entry tunnel, provided we can find it?"

"No trouble whatsoever," Larak said firmly. The tunnel hadn't been made that he couldn't bring crashing down in a shower of choking, smothering... With a shudder, Larak directed his thoughts away from cave-ins. It wasn't like he was going to be in the tunnel when it came down, after all.

FORWARD! =D

Postby JoshuaDurron » Fri Oct 03, 2003 10:36 am

Ree nodded. "That's what I wanted to hear. 'The Plan', then, is to first find the drow encampment. Once we've done that, Larak, Ratch, and Saen will proceed forward to try and locate the drow's tunnel, while Calhoun, Brandon and I scout out the camp and try to figure out a way to rescue the captives. Anyone see anything I've missed?"

Now that he was no longer 'the guard captain', Ree no longer felt compelled to be quite as formal when talking to the group. However, he almost wished he was back on guard duty. After all, the Doman Guard had proceedures one could rip off when it came to Guarding a City. He had never heard of a set of proceedures called, "How to Properly Execute a Rescue Operation while also Collapsing a Tunnel on top of Many Hostile Drow."

Calhoun nodded, peeking up from his book once again.

"I see nothing wrong with that plan, and I'm sure that if they DO follow us, I could slow them down a bit... drow have never been known to be good ice skaters" He said, smirking.

"Well then... seeing as we have a solid plan, let's get it in motion, seeing as we, sadly, don't have the luxury of time to study our target in more detail."

Letting the not-so-complex play of innuendo slide right past him, Larak simply started walking. He knew the rough direction they were headed, and someone better suited to the business of tracking would probably take the lead later. For now, the omportant thing was to get everyone moving, and there was no better way than by example.

Ratch began following after Larak, before turning and responding to Saen. "I'm gonna hold you t' that!"

I doubt it'll be THAT bad...thought the mercenary, knowing very little about what he was getting himself into.

Brandon blithely ignored Saen and Ratch's exchange and paced himself with Larak. "I haven't met too many dwarves," he said conversationally. "Where do you all keep yourselves? I've never heard of a dwarven kingdom like there's Nekonia for catpeople or Kalshana for elves..."

Brandon whistled appreciatively -- entire cities carved into mountains! What a sight that must be. If I live through this mission, he thought to himself with a cheery smirk belying the seriousness of the situation, I'll have to see if I can find one of these 'Holds' for myself. Maybe Larak could tell me how to find one...

"I'd love to see one of these 'Holds' for myself," he stated emphatically. "That's got to be something. How easy is one to find? How do they take to visitors?"

Oh well, always time for shopping when we get there... first we have to get some money. So no one do their jobs half-assed! I want to be in a good mood when I get back for this guy!" Calhoun walked behind them, keeping pace with the group, still with his nose shoved in a book.

"Indeed... do please stop that unprofessional behavior. It's not a good idea to let your hormones get the best of you." He said, glancing up from his novel in a disapproving manner.

"Now then," Aodhfin closed his book as he spoke, turning to Saen, "I can see that our gun-slinging friend here is a Valth, and sir Larak... well he's a dwarf obviously. Mr. Brandon is Baronian, as far as I can tell... but I can't quite figure you out, lady Saen."

As the group moved off and away from Malmuth, they soon picked up the trail of the drow who'd survived the raid. Ree and Saen could tell that some effort had been made to cover the tracks for the a mile or so, but after that whoever had been trying had just given up. Drow probably had no experience with this sort of thing, or at least when it came to the surface. Also, the mass of prisoners they had taken made hiding their movement all the harder.

(Firstly, Brandon, Larak and Saen get a bonus of 75 EXP for banter, with Calhoun and Ratch getting 30. Tomorrow I'll be up all night, and thus have time to move this along. Until then, keep the banter going, if you want.)

The idea of going underground to visit the dwarves held no appeal for Ree, so he had witheld comment up until the present time, his mind wandering from one thing to another as he strolled along with the group. But now his brain was finally returning to the current situation.

"So, information about yourself requires a price, eh Saen? What kind of price do you charge? Gil, or something less appealing?"

"You sound as though I should just talk about my past like it's worth nothing ^_^. Besides... if you give people one thing for free they'll begin to assume other things are free... and it just goes downhill from there..."

Yawning a little, she looked at the ground , trying to make sure they wre on track.

"And getting back to payment... well it depends on what mood I'm in. Gil's always good, if the amount is right... though I think currently I'm more for your 'something less appealing category.' Though actually I don't know WHY you say that... it's not money.. and usually the soreness only lasts for a day or two..."

Ree gave a grin and slung his staff over his shoulders, with his forearms dangling over it. "Perhaps, but some of us prefer to evade sorness entirely, if it's at all possible. And I don't think a person's history is worth nothing, I just find it useful to know what other people value. You might say, the information is of value to me."

(Additional 25 EXP to Ree and Saen for more banter.)

Although following the trail was far from difficult, the length of the journey was long enough, taking the party the rest of the day and a little bit of the night, meaning that the sun was firmly set when the six, now weary, travellers, caught sight of the supposed lair of the drow raiders.

While it could be described as a foreboding entrance into a undoubtedly dangerous underground realm, the less dramatically inclined would simply call it a cave. Not a particularly large one either, the entrance being wide enough to fit three people side by side. The opening itself was on the South side of a particularly barren hill, with only a few tufts of grass dotting it's otherwise earthen dome.

There were no guards present, no apparent traps set for the overly curious, or any sign that the cave was inhabited, barring the tracks that led inside. It'd be a safe bet that the raiders would be expecting trouble, given that they'd tried to conceal their route before.

Larak regarded the cave with considerable trepidation. He'd hoped that they'd catch up with the drow before they reached this point.

So much for the plan of blasting the entrance to rubble and avoiding entering it entirely... Much as he knew they should be making their way in, he couldn't bring himself to make the first move.

"Well mates," Brandon said cheerfully. "Who wants to go in first? Would everyone else be afraid, I could go in screaming and brandishing my sword, of course, but that might not be the best course of action. Your thoughts?"

Ree frowned. A major part of his plan had been catching up to the drow before they got underground. Of course, it didn't seem much different now, but...

"Larak, how hard will it be to make this tunnle collapse? It might be necessary to blow up a large part of it, in case they chase us once we retrieve the prisoners."

Larak turned his thoughts away from entering the cave and considered the problem. Think of it as an exercise in engineering, that was the key. Just had to work out the best places to put the dynamite, and how much. Shouldn't take too much to reduce the cave entrance to rubble.

A prospect which was decidedly disturbing.

Seeing that Larak was brooding, Ree decided to let the dwarf think, and move on to something else. He took a few steps into the mouth of the cave, and peered around. "We'll need some way to see. Calhoun, do you know any lighting spells? We might be able to improvise some torches as well..."
