Now Rain is of ficcie trying! RUN!

Yeah. Figured I should get off my lazy arse and start coming up with Rain's backstory...and as I'm lazy,be sure to poke me if you want me to write more. Or bludgeon me to death if you want me to stop, your call. Please excuse any typos that might squeak past me..my keyboard's dying, and sometimes when you hit a key,it doesn't register. -_-

------------------------------------

The little nekojin girl hurried home as fast as her legs could carry her. It was getting dark, and she'd stayed out a lot later than she'd intended to,but that was because she was having so much fun! Meril'd gotten some really pretty new dolls, and she was nice enough to let her play with them. And Meril's mama had brought them cookies, they'd played dress-up later, had a pretend doll wedding, and were having a lot of fun until she noticed how late it was,and a chill ran down her spine. Mama would be mad.

Hurriedly, she stammered out an apology and bolted out the door, taking off across the village and into the woods, her heart pounding in her ribcage. Maybe if she got there fast,Mama wouldn't be so mad....maybe she'd only yell at her a little if she got there fast and if she said she was really, really sorry. She squealed, eyes going wide in fear,as something snagged her long, wild purple hair, thinking that maybe Mama had come looking for her,and had grabbed her by the hair. She turned,a million excuses racing through her head, ready to give at least one,but relaxed when she saw it was just a tree branch. Breathing a sigh of relief she detached herself, ignoring the brambles and such as they scratched up her legs, any further branches that snagged her hair. Time was something she couldn't afford to waste.

She wondered why Mama lived so far away from the village..she'd heard that it was because of her job. Something that started with a 'w',she couldn't remember exactly what, but because of it,almost all the ladies in the village were mean to Mama and to her too,and wouldn't let their children play with her. That was awful mean she thought,to pick on someone because of their job. Only Meril's mama was nice to her. Looking down glumly at the old, tatty ragdoll that was her only toy,she wished she had a nice mama like Meril's. Meril's mama wasn't so scary, and one night when the other girl had gotten lost, her mama looked for her and looked for her all over the place, and when she'd found her, she'd been so happy that she was okay that she'd hugged her right on the spot.

She,on the other hand, would rather have stayed lost then let *Mama* find her.

The little girl finally made her way out of the trees and into the clearing where their house was. The windows were dark...that could be good, and it could be bad. If she was lucky,Mama'd be asleep, and she'd be in a better mood in the morning. Holding her breath, she quietly approached and opened the door, looking around. No Mama.

"And just where have *you* been,Cyhiraeth?"

Oh *no*...Mama was awake. She turned slowly, trembling now,to see the woman sitting at the table with a grim expression on her face.

"Mama..I...I'm sorry..."

------------------------------------------
Well, should I keep going or not? And Cyhiraeth is Rain's real name by the way..didn't think her parents named her "Rainbow Fright",did you? ^_~

I like it. I'm no good at critiquing writing, so I'll finish with a nice, standard " MORE! that I say to every fic writer I like. I want to see what the whi...er, mamma is like exactly.

Rainbow Fright

Rain's mom is evil. Not ebil.

The little girl's mother stood up,the chair she'd been sitting in falling to the floor unnoticed with a crash. She wasn't a very tall woman, but to the tiny, trembling thing by the door, she looked huge. It was clear that she'd once been rather attractive, but a lifetime of hard drinking and promiscuity had taken their toll on her,not to mention her own bitter feelings towards her child's father, the man she felt had ruined her life. He'd been your standard run of the mill philanderer, had promised her the world, and she'd believed him. Of course,he'd left her one day, never to return, leaving her with broken dreams, empty promises, and an unwanted baby to raise. As he wasn't around, she instead turned all her anger on the one tangible remnant of him she had: her daughter.

"Come here..",she growled, low and ominous as thunder rumbling in the distance.

"Mama,I'm *sorry*! I really am! Don't hit me,please don't hit me Mama...I won't do it again.."

"I said come here! NOW!"

Sniffling, whimpering and with teary eyes, the girl trudged slowly over to her mother, bracing herself for the abuse to come. Now that she was getting closer she could smell the alcohol on her mother and her heart sank even further. It was bad enough when she didn't drink, but when she *did*...

Once the child was in range, her mother reached out and grabbed her by the arm with a growl of impatience, dragging her closer. She yelped in pain and tried to pull away, but the woman was far too strong. The little girl looked up at her,big violet eyes pleading, tears streaming down her face. "Mama, you're hurting me...please let go. I know I was a bad girl Mama. You don't have to hurt me...",she whimpered. Her efforts proved in vain however,as the first slap resounded throughout the dark, dingy little room. A cry of pain escaped the child, but all she got was another slap, and another, and another after that. She could taste blood, and knew she had bitten her lip, could feel the tears streaming down her face, but didn't bother protesting any more. All there was were the tears, the stinging pain, and the horrible, frightening visage of her mother.

Finally, when the woman felt she'd meted out enough punishment, she dragged her daughter over to a closet, opening it and shoving her inside. "You stay here all night.",she snapped. "And if I hear *one* peep out of you,so help me I'll come back and give you a *worse* beating.."

Alone in the dark, her face stinging and her lip bleeding, the little girl wept. Not for the first time she wished she would finally die.

And for those of you familiar with Rain, you now know why she won't ever touch alcohol...

Rainbow Fright

Excuse my lack of creativity in this part.

The next day came after what seemed an eternity to the child, who'd finally cried herself to sleep, her face stinging horribly and arm aching where her mother had grabbed her,not daring to make any noise lest she get hurt even more. Of course, the fact that her mother couldn't *possibly* hear her after falling asleep as intoxicated as she was never occured to the child. She'd had no reason for a thought like that to even cross her mind,as what did a child know of the effects of alcohol? All she knew was that it made Mama even scarier than usual.

She was awake now,but didn't *dare* open the door and let herself out. Mama would be so fearfully angry if she did,and she didnt want to get hit again, and so,she waited quietly for the woman to arise. Eventually the door swung open, and there her mother stood, glaring sourly down at her. The girl stared back up,wide-eyed and silent, hoping that there wouldn't be another beating to come.

"Come out.",she said flatly, the child all too eager to obey. It wasn't a pleasant tone, but it wasn't angry either, and maybe if she responded quickly and didn't give her mother a reason to be angry, there wouldn't be a beating today. She stood waiting, smoothing out the wrinkles in her faded, threadbare green dress. It had once been a brighter grass-green,patterned with litle pink flowers, given to her by one of her mother's old clients. He'd always been kind to the girl,so she'd always been happy to see him...

..even if he and her mother did things upstairs that involved making a lot of funny noises. She didn't know what, and she knew better than to ask.

The woman smiled thinly and indicated a pair of buckets by her foot. "I want you to go into the village and fetch some water. Don't stop to talk to anyone, just do what I've asked of you. Alright?"

"Yes,Mama.",the girl responded promptly, picking up the buckets and heading off. In truth, she was glad to be out of the house for however long it took to do her errand.
