Hot chick(s) within! And some aliens.

I really like this one. I think I've found a PS method I can be satisfied with. Lemme know what you think.

Though the background is the same green that failed horribly in the last attempt, it works a lot better in this one, given that it is not all goobly due to format issues, and also, things have an overall neater feel to them! Mucho improvement, I sees. And says. Also, that space-lead-pipe is neato.

EDIT: That robot gives off groovy Old-School Gumball Machine vibes. I tip my hat to you.

Thanks for the input. I'll definetely try harder. Being colorblind isn't easy--you can never tell whether what you're doing looks good or not. This is why I usually work in pure inks.

Here's the final version of the main cast:

Addison: Last human in the universe, left behind when the Earth suddenly shifted dimensions. She's got nothing to lose but everything to gain when she learns that Earth may not be gone for good.

Ellery: This tentacled alien isn't after schoolgirls. Armed with a sonic cannon and an ego larger than my massive penis, Ellery takes no guff.

Xylos: Once a female of a species she's forgotten the name of, Xylos is now three eyeballs in a bowl of liquid, attached to a kickass robot body. She's an excellent pilot and a "good listener."

ALIEN DEATH SQUAD!!!

Unread postby Nick Shogun » Tue Sep 27, 2005 5:47 am

More stuff. I'm on a FUCKING ROLL!!!

From right to left:

Taurine: A member of the Arachnion race, Taurine is a silent, strong soldier who has proven his devotion to the planet Jacobe countless times. Armed with a genetically-grafted scorpion tail, Taurine can kill his enemies with all SEVEN of his hands. Shouldn't he have eight?

Cockhead: That's just a nickname Addison gave him. His real name's Obbo, but everyone else thinks Cockhead's very catchy. He's a joker with a heart of gold. Awww...

Captain Vermin: Veteran of the Jacobe military, Vermin has been placed in command of a three-man squad, because his superiors feel he's getting too old to have any more power than that. Despite that fact, he can be sharp as a tack and clever... if he's drunk enough.

Gray: Another nickname, but no one knows Gray's real name. He's a member of the Wibb race, the species at the forefront of the psychic revolution. Everyone knows psychics are scum--pompous, rude, egotistical--and Gray is out to disprove them.

I'd really like to know what people think of the character designs, mostly.

Great Lord Rhamos compells you!

Unread postby Nick Shogun » Tue Sep 27, 2005 6:38 am

These are the BAD guys. The evil ones. The ones out to rule the world.

From left to right:

Marlow: Mad scientist, or brilliant pussy? Marlow was eager to join up with these pirates when they volunteered to fund his research, but soon found that pirates were, in fact, VERY dangerous. When battle breaks out, he hides behind something.

Great Lord Rhamos: Last of a race of double-skinned dragon men with better things to do than hang out in THIS dimension, Rhamos became a pirate to protest the facist economy that encompasses his solar system. He picked a good group, reliable yet pathetic. Addison used to be his partner, until she turned on him.

Dhana: Retired bounty hunter Dhana the Yellow Jacket has captured more than a hundred dangerous men/women, yet still desires the mystery and adventure of space travel. Rhamos' sole-survivor tale moved Dhana to join him. Armed with a simple rocket pack, and a small laser pistol, Dhana remains a deadly enemy.

LAST- but not the least...

Unread postby Nick Shogun » Tue Sep 27, 2005 7:10 am

Finally, the last character is designed! These guys are fun-loving, space-travelin' kung fu masters!

Cyril (left): Master of ancient kung fu (learned mostly through old Bruce Lee movies), Cyril is the alien that trained Addison to become the gourmet of martial arts she is today. Though they trained together for years, romance never sparked between them, due to the disgusting pigment of Addison's skin.

Bobert (right): Pilot of Master Cyril's floating space dojo, Bobert is also a kung fu master, and loyal, dedicated... I could go on. He's everything dogs wish they could be. The two travel the solar system, aiding those in need while hiding behind a curtain of secrecy.

So THAT'S where Cyril and Bob went! <p>

<span style="font-size:xx-small;">"Their rhetoric... You didn't put communists in his bed did you!" came Amber's indignant reply.

"Why not? All I had to do was open a gate to his bed and stick up a sign saying 'Hot virgin willing to make the ultimate sacrifice in the name of international socialist fraternity.'"</span>

<span style="color:blue;font-size:xx-small;">Excaliburned:</span> <span style="font-size:xx-small;">Ah yes, I'm thinking of having the USS Bob be preserved outside the Arena as a monument of sorts</span></p>

Meet Jimmy "Chico" Huahua, a member of Bobert's race, the Canines.

Raised by hippy parents, Chico joined the army to escape responsibility, but was instead horribly maimed in battle. He dragged his mangled body to a surgeon who grafted on a new arm, new legs, and a new hand, making his a canine/cyborg.

Now, Chico operates as a bounty hunter, and a damned good one at that. <p>---

Uriel's got some funky light sourcing going on, his left arm and leg in particular. Both have shadows where the light should be falling on.

I'd suggest studying some anatomy, and especially some foreshortening. You don't have any fear of giving your characters some muscle definition, which is a good thing, but some study in the human form can give you a better feel for your characters. You can keep doing the style you've got going, but looking into some anatomy will make it even solid...er.

Perspective can also give your comics more depth; dynamic camera angles, structured backgrounds, etc. Plus, it's really easy to do, all you need is a ruler and some really light pencil work (or a line tool and a separate layer). There should be plenty of perspective tutorials online, so you can just Google'em.

My nifty link for this post shall be...
Save Loomis
This site archives the books of Andrew Loomis, a renowned (advertising?) artist from the twenties and thirties. They may seem outdated, but are still a prime source of information.
My prescription is one dosage Figure Drawing for All its Worth and a minimum of five and a half hours of porning. Bring your sketchbook with you.

And don't bother calling me in the morning. I'll be...studying anatomy. <p>
