Casey: art trade with BG

Unread postby pd Rydia » Tue Apr 27, 2004 12:34 am

I'm hesitant to post this because I don't feel that I did as well with this as I did with my last piece (Kris), but what the hey. Furries are hard to draw so I guess it's understandable. :(

This is Casey, Bunnygirle's character that you all know and love. And may I say now that that white is a damned hard fur color to shade/highlight.

Image

A lot of detail was lost when it sized down, alas. I need to find a way to get around that. For those interested, the background was made by scanning in a bunch of cards and filtering then. I like it. Not so keen on how the muzzle turned out.

Critiques, comments, ego-feeding, and links to tutorials and sample pics welcome.

Hm...how do I put this...

She looks like a man. I personally blame the nose and shoulders for most of this, though I suspect the shape of the face also contributes. Something about the jawline. Also, I think, the hair...it's cropped short, and seems flat in this picture.

On the good side, remember how you said shading seemed difficult? You did a pretty nice job of it. And the background, for lack of better words, is spiffo.

Face shape came straight from http://www.polykarbon.com/tutorials/fro ... ntview.htm That Choark linked me. But maybe something about the muzzle? And the hair, yeah, but that is Casey's style. Thanks for the comments Trev!

Holy shit. I don't know why, but I love the nose. Very groovy. The cards are a nice touch.

Image

Face shape + Nose + Short hair = Looks like a man.

The eyes kinda counter-act it, but not enough. As DW said, you've gotten your shading down.

Ah. I see what the problems are now, I think.

First of all, the mouth. Yeah, I know it's supposed to be like that...but it seems masculine, slightly. Maybe add a bit of texture/filling to it.

Second, the nose still seems offscale from that guide. It looks way too large, and wide.

Third, and I believe this is what threw me off the...well, not the most, but close, is the eyes. I missed them before, but they should be smaller and thinner, and the brows seem...off somehow.

All this combined makes her look masculine.

Well, her nose is wide, because in the reference picture I used the rabbit's nose was also very wide. Also, it is a rabbit nose, and not a human's.

I'm not sure how I would have added more texture or filling to the mouth. Any suggestions?

Also, the eyes are a different style than what is in the guide, because I decided to stick with the style of eyes I used in the Kris picture. I used the guide for the shape of the head and the placement of the features, instead of an exact copy of everything that is on the tutorial.

Comments appreciated.

Hmmm...I'd try making the face shape a bit more classically bishoujo-ish, and/or trying to place the mouth so she seems to have less of a Jay Leno chin. I think the latter contributes to the mannishness more.

Well I've commented on this elsewhere so I ain't going to repeat that however I will say:

I disagree with anyone who says that she looks like a man.

So yeah: I disagree.

Other then that, good stuff!

Image

Personally, I say she's a bit androgynous/tomboyish, and yeah, the hair appears flat. But quite spiffy, and that background ROCKS!
