I recently got into a discussion with a friend of mine over IMs.
He's complaining about how society expects you to conform to a model of life, and how it was better way back when you didn't feel this anxiety over fulfilling these expectations, longing after meaningless material things and being a slave of a large, faceless mass of people.
He further went on to complain about how we've developed cures for ADD that makes kids addicted and have effects later in life because we want them to behave like everyone else and conform to the societal norm we expect them to do.
And that we're so obsessed with getting something, we suffer as soon as we want it, and that it would be better if we never had anything to strive for, because then we would be at peace with ourselves.

As someone who's studying to become a teacher, I take this very, very personally. I'm spending years to learn the best ways to educate children while at the same time opening the world for them. To guide them and help them fulfill themselves and be happy with their lives. I've got gender-studies to help me identify problems, battle them and bring the students closer together, promote acceptance and diversity.
To give every student a fair chance!
But in an instant he puts everything the educational system is, everything our society is, what it is developing into and what we're striving for into the big lump of negative bullshit that's ruining our species. Never mind that these ADD cures came out of an attempt to give these children a fair chance to be what they want to be, on the same level as the other kids. Sure, it's a society that promotes homogeneity in behaviour, but at the same time we're some of the safest, most well-off people in all of history. And society is a working process! It's not some big stagnant engine!
Hell, the idea of adolescence and the search for identity has been around for only a little over a hundred years! For crying out loud, being a homosexual was a friggin' sin punisheable by stoning!
It burns my ass that somone can act so damn high and mighty and say the system we're in is shit. In comparison to some fantasy paradise when everyone is happy (read Ideology), then sure, but when we have generations of people working to make things better for their children, then it means something!
People fought, cried and fucking bled for the rights we have today, don't shit on that!
WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEZE!
