In about a week I'll be doing a formal research project on roleplaying boards. I'll be studying roleplaying boards because they generally have well-established and openly-published rules for "fitting in" and becoming a "good" user.
So anyone who can suggest a forum that's active, I'd absolutely be thrilled to check it out.

It's not a forum itself, but Lowtax's UIUC presentation, though well touched with humor, is actually a pretty good source of information about the successful management of a quite popular online forum. Or at least, I've always thought so.

It has a nice currency/item/spell system. Not all people like it, but these types of forums take my interest more than any others. Ever.
Tii Liima, if I'm to be searched for there.

The site's down at the moment, hard drive change. It has an active roleplaying section on it. But what would really be helpful for your research would be looking into the personal battles section. They have an established judging sheet for battles.
