New Brain Atlas Unveils 3-D Gene Map
Scientists Hope New Knowledge Will Lead to Breakthroughs in Mental Disorders
By QUIANA BURNS

Sept. 26, 2006
— - It is being called a scientific breakthrough for a problem that affects about 26 percent of American adults, or 57.7 million people.

The problem: mental disorders. The breakthrough: the Allen Brain Atlas. It is a Web-based, 3-D map of gene expression in the brain of a mouse, created by the Allen Institute for Brain Science in Seattle. Microsoft co-founder Paul G. Allen provided $100 million to launch the Allen Institute and the Atlas project in 2003.

After three years and a look at more than 21,000 genes at the cellular level, scientists say the atlas gives them an amount of data that has never been available until now.

"We've captured 85 million images. That would be like filling 20,000 iPods!" said Allan Jones, the institute's chief scientific officer, at a press conference Tuesday in Washington, D.C.

So how will [...!]

Urge Senators to Protect Minor Girls from Abortion Predators

Here's a real story that shows why CCPA is necessary to protect parental rights. Marcia Carroll is a Pennsylvania mother whose daughter was taken to New Jersey without Marcia's knowledge for an abortion. The family of the girl's boyfriend wanted her to have an abortion. They helped transport her to New Jersey and then threatened to leave her there if she didn't have the abortion. Unfortunately, she did have an abortion. Marcia thought that Pennsylvania's state parental notification law would protect her child, but she did not learn until after the fact that the state law was easily circumvented.

How did they get the girl there if they had to threaten her to keep here there? Did they take her against her will?

If so... why are we bitching about the abortion? The real issue here is KIDNAPPING. We should make kidnapping illegal! Oh, wait.

If she had been kidnapped and raped, this wouldn't have shown up in their newsletter. But an abortion? What a tragedy.
-------------------------

Stuff like this always reminds me that back in the day abortion was the option to take to prevent the shame of having a daughter give birth out of wedlock. But now people are trying to outlaw it because it interferes with their personal religious beliefs :( Sad. Furthermore, I hate it when they show up at schools with pictures of aborted fetuses trying to dissuade kids from engaging in an 18 year commitment of time, money, and stress- that they are not prepared to deal with in any way shape or form. OH WELL LORD GOD WILL PROVIDE I SUPPOSE.

To be fair, it's possible it was willing but she was coerced into it. If it wasn't entirely her decision in that fashion, it's no better than if her parents themselves had taken her somewhere to make her get an abortion themselves.

Or if, you know, the doctor had specifically asked HER about it, since it's kinda her body, and regardless of threats from the boyfriend's family the doc could always call her home and ask.

Which makes me think the situation was more along the lines of "the girl was okay with getting an abortion, boyfriend's people were adamant about it and insisted on helping, fanatics blew it out of proportion since mommy didn't know (and probably would have shrieked since she's on the newsletter or similarly fanatical)."

I wasn't talking about threats, E-Mouse. I just meant that it's possible they talked her into making a decision that she wouldn't have made on her own. Since the article doesn't really say anything about the situation beyond the vaguest of facts, I can't bring myself to take a position on it on either side without more information, myself.

I believe shotgun weddings were preferred over abortions back in the good ol' days. Which reminds me of the article of the family which married their 13 year old daughter ("young woman") to the 22-year-old man (pedo, or as they write in England, paedo) who got her pregnant...cus it's very important to have two parents growing up, you know.

What prompts you to play with a monicker like "Black Jesus," anyway? There's a reason that some gaming services and most MMORPGs won't let you use certain names; Everquest had something like four printed pages worth of rules regarding what kinds of names you were disallowed from using, including the names of real people or historical figures, religious figures, names that implied titles, etc.

S.C. Councilman: Sterilize Bad Parents

POSTED: 10:51 pm EDT September 30, 2006

CHARLESTON, S.C.
-- A City Council member, reacting to a video store holdup believed to have been carried out by children, says parents who can't properly care for their kids should be sterilized.

"We pick up stray animals and spay them," Larry Shirley said in a story published Saturday by The Post and Courier of Charleston. "These mothers need to be spayed if they can't take care of theirs...[lunk]

Sterilizing parents is a pretty stupid idea, yeah.

But I really think there need to be more assurances in place about people being able to take care of kids before having them (ala planned parenthood). As opposed to, say, just having a few kids to try and get the tax breaks.

Which I wouldn't put beyond some families.

The funny thing about people bitching about a name like "black jesus" is that Jesus sure as fuck wasn't a white guy. Not a lot of people of European descent in Nazareth.

And about the persecution of that guy married to a minor and that "sexual device" ban... it's disturbing how many laws are based not on any sense of morality, but rather on the personal philosophies of governing officials. Does banning the sale of sex toys really benefit anyone at all? It certainly hurts a few businesses, that's for sure.

Image

He's the cabbie from heaven

BY JIM RICH
NEWS DEPUTY SUNDAY SPORTS EDITOR

We've all heard about cabbies from hell. Here's a story about one from heaven.

It was a rainy Wednesday night. My girlfriend and I were getting out of a cab at 47th St. and Ninth Ave. I paid the fare and tip, darted out of the cab, and we dodged the raindrops and ran into the corner deli. We were on our way to a friend's house to watch the Yankees playoff game and had stopped to pick up some beverages.

When I went to pay the cashier, I realized I had left my wallet in the cab - and $1,400 that I had won that week in Atlantic City was in it.

I dashed out of the deli and down ninth Ave. There were what seemed like a million taxis waiting at red lights between 47th and 44th Sts. I began frantically flinging open any cab door I could get my hands on.

I couldn't find my cabbie.

My head began throbbing, and I was overcome by the urge to vomit.

I spent the next 36 hours of intermittent nausea canceling credit cards, closing bank accounts - there was a slip with my account number in the wallet - buying new MetroCards and resigning myself to the fact that I was never going to see that $1,400 again.

Then Daniel Carou drove back into my life.

By chance, Carou had spotted my billfold on his backseat while he was sitting in traffic at 42nd St. minutes after dropping me off. He drove back to 47th, but I had already headed down ninth Ave., cursing as I made my way toward my apartment in Chelsea.

But instead of celebrating his windfall, Carou spent two days trying to track me down.

"I looked in the wallet and saw all the money, and thought, 'This man has to pay rent. I have to return this to him,'" said the 52-year-old Argentinian, who came to the U.S. in 1978 and has been driving a cab "on and off" since 1986.

On Thursday, he went to the police, who told him to try the address on my driver's license. He drove to 21st Ave., in Astoria, Queens, only to find I hadn't lived there in two years.

Undeterred, he looked through the wallet again and found my Daily News identification card. Carou left his number on Friday morning at the front desk of The News' building on 33rd St. I got in touch with him that afternoon, and by 9 p.m., my wallet - and the $1,400 - was back in my hands.

When I offered to give Carou some of the cash as a reward for his honesty and effort, he declined. He said he once had his own wallet returned to him after losing it on a street near his Brooklyn home and he was happy to return the favor for somebody else.

"I didn't want any money," he said. "I just wanted to see the person's face when I handed them the wallet."

About Kai's quantum physics article and Zero's comment, I believe it's because usable information can't be transmitted through this method. You can only get information by comparing the two, and thus it can't actually be used to cause something to go faster than light. So it really isn't one step closer to true teleportation, which like time travel and FTL travel is one of those things those jerkwad physicists have shown to more than likely be impossible.

They ruin everything. >:

Yes, but who says teleportation has to be faster than light?

This is a method that allows macroscopic objects to be transmitted as information close to or at the speed of light.

Actually, how it works is basically the information is extracted from the original object, which as a result is destroyed. Then the information is applied to create another identical object, thus neatly sidestepping the Heisenburg Uncertainty Principle because you aren't actually reading the object's position and velocity.
-----

Here's something short and sweet:
________________________
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Just when it seemed that vendors at the North Carolina State Fair have deep-fried everything possible, there's the latest offering: Deep-fried Coca-Cola.

So far, the list of items dipped into hot vegetable oil includes Oreos, Twinkies, Moon Pies and cheeseburgers. At the South Carolina State Fair, they deep-fried Ho-hos.

Here's the recipe: Mix funnel-cake batter with Coke instead of water. Pour the batter into the fryer and cook up a mass of doughy strands. Stuff into a Coca Cola cup, sprinkle with powdered sugar and douse with pure Coke syrup. Top it with whipped cream and a cherry.
