Now HERE's an interesting one...

I always wrote these things off as the ramblings of a well-meaning kook. Guess I was wrong. <p>

Two things contributed to this formerly held opinion.

1) I never really read the things, as I already like Jesus.

2) I'm very, VERY naive.

But then again, that's part of the appeal, ain't it? <p>

The purpose of Chick tracts is not to make you like Jesus but to run to Jesus in fear because you've been living a sinful life and are on the road straight to hell. Especially if you're Catholic, a scientist, or think any activities aside from "mission trips to civilize those damned savages in Africa" are fun. <p>

I like how this thread turned into a "Chuck is a moron" thread rather than an actual discussion on the topic at hand.

Until those last couple posts, anyway.

Personally, I've never even heard of the guy; or if I have, I ignored him entirely. I suppose, given this evidence, that's probably for the best. <p><div style="text-align:center">Image</div></p>Edited by: [url=http://p068.ezboard.com/brpgww60462.showUserPublicProfile?gid=brainwalker>BrainWalker</A]&nbsp; Image at: 11/15/06 13:20

While I have never had any of these Chick Tracks given to me I find the conspiracy theories presented in this article rather intriguing. Not in any "Oh God they did that!?" kinda way but more of "Wow, they believe they managed to do all this?" Kinda way.

Seriously my respect for the Catholic religion and the Vatagan would escalate to soaring heights if they honestly managed to conspire and do even half of what they are said to do. The Legion of Mary, the computer files on every protestant. Running wars for the sole reason to kill Jews. Catholic's are hardcore man!

.. Hey wow! There's more then a page here - why there's 6 pages worth of reading here. Egads! *goes back to flick through it all*

Edit:
Oh wow! He tries to prove Catholics aren't even Christian.
Edit 2:
I am suddenly amused as I noticed that this report is on a Catholic webpage. <p><div style="text-align:center"> </div>

I usually read these things because they proved fuel for my soul, by which I mean to say that they keep me pissed off at Jack Chick, which is something I find important. I tend to wonder, though, if Chick even manages to win more people over than he turns off.

Unfortunately, he probably does. :(

I'd also like to say that from what I've heard about Southern Baptist sects, not ALL of Christianty escapes the "religion based on fear" clause.

Someone, please prove me wrong. I'd love to be wrong on this one. <p><span style="font-size:xx-small;">"It's in the air, in the headlines in the newspapers, in the blurry images on television. Some Christian sects do indeed use fear as a motivating tool. Look at Chick; it's obvious that he is. And it's true that some extreme forms of Baptistry and other evangelical groups think it's a great idea.

But Christianity is not a religion based on fear. There's a difference. <p>

Converting people through fear is still converting them. The problem with it is that, if it works, the convert will end up being focused on staying out of Hell instead of developing his relationship with God. Fear-based devotion may suffice to get people into Heaven after they die, but it causes them to miss out on the most important part of the religious experience, which is the joy of love and compassion.

AM: I'll allow that, though I am hard pressed to think well of such a general statement about a many-compartmented thing. Christianity as a whole is not based on fear, but I think some sects of it have been. Are there any non-sected Christians anymore, instead of Presbyterians and Lutherans and Catholics and Anglicans and whathaveyou? <p><span style="font-size:xx-small;">"It's in the air, in the headlines in the newspapers, in the blurry images on television. In reply: Wassup.

Different sects of Christianity often disagree about how to go about things, and there are some bits (namely Old Testament) about how one should submit to the fear of God. But if you're paying any attention to the New Testament (which is much more important to Christians, or we'd be Jews), the whole point of giving yourself over to God is that He loves you and wants to provide for you, not that he's going to cast you into a lake of fire if you don't.

The vocal evangelicals that try to use fear as a means of converting people are regarded by most more open-minded Christians as being very misguided. <p>

That's like saying "the people who find mushrooms tasty find that those who order pizzas without to be very misguided." Open minds don't as often succumb to fear. <p><span style="font-size:xx-small;">"It's in the air, in the headlines in the newspapers, in the blurry images on television. You're quite right, but just the same; is it really right to say Christianity is based on fear when so many of the smarter Christians are saying it isn't?

I don't intend to be rude, Priam, but you seem pretty uninformed about Christianity as a whole. <p>

Well, just because the smarter people in a group say something doesn't mean it's the truth.

I'm just saying you can't apply a blanket statement to a group that has a multitude of modes and orientations and aims and methods due to their own sects. It'd be fairly safe to say Christianity wasn't *founded* on fear, but to say that all of Christianity is not based on fear is a little more subject to skepticism and scrutiny. <p><span style="font-size:xx-small;">"It's in the air, in the headlines in the newspapers, in the blurry images on television. Being Catholic, from the time I've spent in church anywhere... Catholicism is all about being nice to other people, where I've heard accounts of Baptists, mainly Southern ones, being preachy about how movies today show signs towards paganism, mostly regarding HP and Star Wars, and if you watch them you're going to hell and crap...

Honestly, I don't know how to stop them, since if someone hasn't this long and it just comes to me to figure it out, I think there's a likely chance I have nothing to add on fixing it, since it's beyond just one idea. It's not like a cult you can just condemn for being wrong, because there are a lot of honest and true people who hate the bad mouthing, but can't really change it...

And there are some who are SO honest and true, they can't stop from telling people they suck at life for not being part of their religion. In the movie "Saved", it's all about a community that shunned anything that didn't do the crap the "Bible" claimed... Great movie by the way. Macaulay Culkin stared in it was a cynical jack ass. I emplore those who haven't really seen how these people can act to watch it for a bit of knowledge, since I doubt it's any more different in life.

That's true about blanket statements, Priam, but the converse of "Christianity is based on fear" isn't "all of Christianity is not based on fear". It's "some of Christianity is not based on fear", since the opposite of "this is true for all" is "this is not true for some". And it is demonstratably true that some of Christianity is not based on fear. Because of that, it's inaccurate to say the former. <p>

I just got the shit obfuscated out of me, and I am confused entirely. So, I went back and read the prior parts of the thread where this started to regain my bearings, and saw that I had taken AM's comment out of its context as a negation. Fuck, I don't even know quite what it is that I'm saying right now, that's how many times this has been turned backwards and inside out.

I'm just going to say that I agree with Idran, because that's about what it would look like if I actually broke it down to its fundaments. I think it is to Judaism's credit that the majority of Jewish extremists, assuming such people even exist, have the sense to conduct their varoius businesses away from the public eye; whereas Christianity's religious zalots are all to eager to whore themselves out to the media.

Being Christian is kind of like being black, in one sense. Every time you turn on the news, you just pray there isn't some dumbass making your people look bad. <p><div style="text-align:center">Image</div></p>Edited by: [url=http://p068.ezboard.com/brpgww60462.showUserPublicProfile?gid=brainwalker>BrainWalker</A]&nbsp; Image at: 11/26/06 17:07

Yeah; Chick's full o' the crap.

The KKK and Nazi things stuck out to me in particular for the following reasons:

1. The KKK don't like Catholics as much as they don't like black people.

2. Nazi's targeted Catholics, seeing them as a threat to Hitler's "Thousand-year-reich"

If he was going to spread lies, he should have at least done some research first, before making himself look even more like an ass hole.
