Watched a score of episodes for the anime of this. Surprisingly entertaining!

And the reactions to bread are suitably mad. Though I didn't see any Guilty Gear in there. :[

Yeah, oftentimes the composition and layout is constructed around the reading direction, just as it is in comics here. <p>

As an artist I'd hate the idea of someone grabbing my images and flipping them over just because some people can't be bothered to read the other damn way. Bloody elitists with there reading only one way ideas! Goddamn.

Least in Blade of the Immortal he made it if they weren't going to just get people to read and look at it in the direction he had intended, he made them actually cut up panels and place them in the right order as not to do that God awful flipping thing.

Scanslating takes enough time as it is--horizontal flipping isn't much on one image, or two, or ten, but when you've got 100+ pages of a volume, and several more volumes to go? Yeah. Obnoxious as fuck.

Unnecessary work aside, it fucks up the images. Everyone becomes left-handed, for instance. This -does- become a problem in certain genres of comics, especially when people who are translating keep the translation true (mysteries, anyone?) <p>

Actually, it honestly wouldn't be that much _work_ to flip them. You wouldn't have to do it by hand, just set up a batch job to do it automatically. Even 100+ would take maybe a second or two to run through. <p>

Ah but at the same time the 'Masses of Actual Manga-Fans' (The M.A.N.'s) want there Manga to be published in the none reversed manner and as they are the ones who actually buy the books, the publishers will meet there demends.

So professionally speaking its better to not reverse it and just let the haters keep on hating. And as the non professional scanlators are normally M.A.N.'s as well they'll not want to flip the image either. <p><div style="text-align:center"> </div>

Actually, I think it's more important that there are artists who refuse to allow their art to be licensed if it is going to be flipped. Companies can get these licenses by preserving the original formatting, and additionally appeal to nerdcore fans by saying "we did it 4 u!" <p>

That example would be valid if the letter order itself was right to left in a translation, but your point would have been better served by writing your sentences in reverse order, putting the first one in your post last and the last one first. <p>

I guess what I'm advocating is not businesses writing the other way, considering that it may actually be true (though I have some doubt believing) that they sell better if left in their original right-to-left order. What I *am* advocating at that point, though, is that the fans should either learn Japanese properly and not half-ass it, or deal with English sentence order as an understood precedent. <p><span style="font-size:xx-small;">"It's in the air, in the headlines in the newspapers, in the blurry images on television. It has nothing to do with how well they sell, though, and no one's arguing based on that. It's purely the fact that the art is created based around a right-to-left layout, and merely flipping the images distorts the artist's intent. Cutting apart the panels and rearranging them, when feasible, is a fine solution. If the panel layout itself is also part of the book's design, though, then such matters are in fact _not_ feasible, and the best solution to preserve the intent is leaving it as is and putting the onus on the reader to compensate.

In the end, it comes down to what you think is more important, preserving the artist's intent or making things a bit easier for English readers. <p>
