Teach me WoW.

Unread postby Capntastic » Wed Apr 05, 2006 8:48 pm

amaZ1n AZn1nVaZn: i dunno if robby told you
amaZ1n AZn1nVaZn: but
amaZ1n AZn1nVaZn: i took over a guild in WoW
amaZ1n AZn1nVaZn: and
amaZ1n AZn1nVaZn: we need druids
amaZ1n AZn1nVaZn: and andrew has an active account
amaZ1n AZn1nVaZn: with a level 60 druid
amaZ1n AZn1nVaZn: but he works full time

So, teach me about WoW. I know stuff about MMORPGs and I know the WoW culture sucks but I really don't know anything about the gameplay or areas or anything.

This is a little like walking into your doctor's office and saying "teach me medicine." Because there's so much more information to any MMORPG than you are ever going to learn in a few paragraphs or pages of recitation.

Picking up a 60th level in WoW without any concept of what playing WoW is is a little like being drafted for the NFL without having ever played football in your entire life or knowing any of the rules.

Edit: At least, that's how I'm reading this post.

Well, considering I've been playing MMORPGs since before I had my own computer, I don't think it'll be a totally confusing mystery experience.

I just wanna know what Druids are good at, and what I should expect. I'm told I'll be doing raids and all that, and I dunno what that exactly means other than instanced dungeons.

So yeah, just some idea of what I'll be doing.

Edit: This is all going on my belief that WoW is nothing special and just a mish-mash of popular ideas from other MMORPGs but if there's really some crazy concepts that'll throw me for a loop feel free to fill me in. Also I'm glad I'll be having a level 60 guy so I don't have to level at all or get items; I'll just be chilling with friends and harassing lower-leveled characters of opposite alignment.

Druids can heal, tank and do damage! Too bad you'll only ever be healing, and getting told you're an idiot if you try to do the second or third in a raid.

Almost all druids are healers in raids. Some more open minded guilds might let a druid specialise in his animal forms, but most likely he's going to be of most use healing. The feral forms have their advantages if you specialise in them and are used wisely (+3% crit aura, for example) but most people are happy to designate druids as a healer class. Which I kinda agree with. They make damn good healers.

That's my take on them anyway. Also, go here and read your choice of stickied druid FAQ threads. Those sort of a things tend to be quite informative.

My statements are mostly based on the fact that I've played a fair number of MMORPGs in my day as well, and probably the most extensive of those that I would say had any real depth was FFXI.

In FFXI, you could tell the guys who'd bought their accounts with the high-level characters on ebay or IGN or whatever the fuck or purchased billions of gil with real money; they all sucked. They didn't know anything about proper gear choices. They didn't know anything about proper party dynamics. They had no idea what they were supposed to be doing, didn't understand how their skills should work, didn't understand how the game's more complex abilities (such as combination skillchains) worked, etc.

If you do some research on other forums and read a lot of FAQs and do a good bit of research, I'm sure you can figure things out. Since you'll apparently be playing with some people you know, they'll probably be a little more lenient with you making mistakes, but you never know. I would never suggest that it took great "skill" to play an MMORPG, because it usually doesn't; what separates good players from not-good players is knowledge, and sometimes that takes a while to soak up.

Even after playing multiple MMO's, there's going to be a big learning curve changing games.

Playing a Healer in Ragnarok != Playing a Healer in DaoC != Playing a Healer in Final Fantasy XI != Playing a Healer in EQ2

The very basics are the same. Big mob hits party member. You heal them. You gain 'aggro' healing them, too much gets the mob attacking you.

Beyond that, the games play drastically different. How do you join groups? How do you use the in-game interface to select targets? What abilities do you have to complement your healing abilities? Do you have multiple roles beyond healing? When are you supposed to use certain abilities?

And this doesn't even cover just navigating around the gameworld, knowing how the game's quest system (if it has one) works, how to interact with/find other players.

You can get some of this from checking forums, but there's still a lot to learn about the game you can only get from playing it. And it WILL take months, regardless of your MMORPG experience.

I really doubt it will take me months to learn how to follow my friend's group around and hit buttons and target people.

Yeah, but will you be able to do it well?

I'll pick it up. It's not like they're expecting me to know the game on my first day. I was just wondering about classes and what skills they all have and stuff. Fun things to do in WoW, and all.

The most fun thing to do in WoW is to go into the barrens and say "Chuck Norris" in general chat.

The second most fun thing to do is to enter a major city and wait for a gold farmer to start shilling a [Fodor's Fancy Book of Something or Other] in the trade channel, and then link the book with a price beating his by a reasonable amount, wait for him to beat your pice and then repeat.

I got it down to 27 copper and a half eaten stick of chewing gum one day.

So you want less "teaching" and more "telling about", then.

Step 1: Hit things with your magic.

Step 2: When you're nearly out of mana, turn into a bear.

Step 3: Hit things with your claws until they die.

Step 4: If required, turn into a person again, and then go to step 1.
<Chat> <Matto says, "What's up?"

Have to say, Banj's strategy is a good one.

Also, go to the Crossroads and ask where Mankrik's wife is.

It helps to get out there and just solo for a couple days in the wild. Use all your abilities, find out what his talent tree is like, and get a feel for everything you can do. Then start healing in groups. Go on a few BG runs, see what PvP is like, but be humble...people may expect a lot of you since you're 60 and can heal. If they can't have patience, just ignore em and move on. It's your friends that asked you to play, and you can at least count on them for assistance, patience and advice. Or, you could always just accuse them of being ninjas.

A popular (but pansy ass) tactic for druids who solo in PvP is to run around in bear form and beat up on people until your health gets low. Then shapeshift to speed form and run away. Then to human form and heal+regen, then back to bear. A lot of pussy Hordies do it, it seems to work pretty well. Just not if you have a zerg on you obviously.

Bears can dance now.

They look very silly. They also talk silly.

Oh, and you can shoot them out of cannons.

It still makes me laugh when people say the word "Zerg" when they're talking about MMORPGs and stuff. My cousin (a DAoC addict) said it and then proceeded to not believe me when I told him that it came from another game.

If I were you, I'd go into some newbie area and claim to be level 1. Tell everyone that tells you otherwise that there's a bug in their game that's making you look high-level. You could get some laughs out of that.
-_-___-___-___-_-

If you can still recognize the default Blizzard UI, then you need more mods.

You must obey the dance commander, giving out the order for fun!

Just looking through the forum for a certain thread....and I am ashamed at Jak! I play a lvl 60 epic druid, and have done so for over a year now (the druid part, not the epics). Message me on AIM with any questions you might still have.

Actually, the person who said they weren't going to play anymore decided to start playing 8 hours a day as soon as he got done with his classes.
