Are we THAT distant from our parents?

Unread postby ChristianC » Wed Jun 18, 2003 6:15 pm

Right, this happened to me Last new year's eve, so it's a bit old, but the subject isn't.

I was celebrating new year's eve with my father, his new wife and two of their friends whom I've known for a long time. To you who doesn't know me in Real Life, I can say that I'm very much negative to alcohol consumption in general. Celebrations, yes. Holidays, nope.

Anyway, my father's wife, henceforth called Wife, and the woman friend, henceforth called friend, started discussing how much Wife's kid (not my brother) have been hanging 'round the net lately. Me being the typical economist of the family said that "Tell him the phone bill next time and he might stop." The two looked at me like I was from Mars.

"It's not like that," Wife says and smile. "The money we can afford, but it's not real." Here I nearly choken on some soda. "I mean," Wife continues, "How can he spend hours talking to people on the net?"

Now, Wife is, and I'm not ashamed to say this, a phonaholic, and generally takes to sit for hours and talk with her friends. I pointed this out and she smiled.

"But at least I know who I'm talking too." This made me a bit surprised. Apparently, as long as you know who you're talking too, it's all fine and dandy. The heck, you guys could all be a bunch of serial-killer/rapists(Not that I don't think you are, mind you :D)!

Then came the thing I feared most. "You're often on the net at your mother's, right?" I had to nod. "Isn't it hard to write to people? I mean, you don't know them at all, you've never heard them speak."

"'course I know them. I've been on the board for over two years!"

"Yeah, but you've never met anyone of them, you haven't seen or talked to them. They could be lying straight to your face!"

As you understand, I got a bit frustrated. "Listen, I've got pictures of my friends on the board, I've heard sound-clips, and besides. On the net," Here I made one of my favourite quotes, "it doesn't matter who you are or where you're from, it's what you do that counts."

Obviously, this slipped Wife and Friend. "How can you trust they're telling you the truth?"

"Okay," As most of you know, I can get upset/excited easily, and this was one of those moments, "let's say they're all 45+, rapists and murderers. So what? They're fun to hang around with!"

"You don't hang around, you just write to eachother. You can't express emotions in text, you can't make people understand what you mean."

The conversation continued, but after this point there was mainly repeating of the same stuff... Now, is this common? It's not the biggest thing in the world, but it sure shocked me a lot.

I get the same thing, ChrC. And not just from my mother. From my SISTER. She's only 25, and she's already out of the loop and old. I can't understand it! >.<
--------------------

That's why I don't bring that sort of thing up very often.

I get the same thing. It is for this reason when I meet Shini, they will be there. When I go to Otakon, I will not spend nights, I will have bagged lunch, and Kristen and her friends can NEVER leave my side.
And it's the reason why, in theory, until proved otherwise beyond the shadow of a doubt, you are serial child molesters in an age range of 35-50.

<_< My parents were the same way. Generally what I do to convince my parents my friends aren't evil, is call them up on the phone.

:D I talk on the phone to lots of my net friends. ^^; Yay for phone cards!
|---------|

I could theoretically call each one of you who gives out your number. But long-distance calls are usually VERY expensive.

Glad to know I'm not alone, though.

.... Your dad's new wife sounds like She = Bimbo to me Christian. My own mother, the person who got my cable internet, understands about the Net and the people on it and communicating with them is rather on the real side much of the time. She's 46. I don't think it has so much to do with a generation thing actually. I used to hang out in a chat room where the age range was from 19-55. Everyone in there treated people with respect, as if talking face to face. I think it's just the people who haven't yet actually truly used the Net for anything past looking up a price, or checking the time of something, that don't get it yet.

I`d have to say my dad is pretty good at understanding this all. He likes to know where you guys are all from and in his own little way incourges it. He likes me to meet new people. Plus, he`s always been a great dad so I think he`s happy for me and my brother too. Oh and my dad is around 50.

I really envy you. The only one in my family, in-wed or not, who's about as good on computers as I am is my mom's new husband, my very famous Stepfather who enjoys ruining my life.

Yrggg, I have the same trouble. Although my mom is a lot more paranoid about chatting then posting on a message board. Thus why I haven't been on the chat for something like a month now.

Either way, I have to do most of my posting when my parents aren't home. My mom thinks(nevermind that I have been using the net for much longer than her and know way more about it and computers in general) that me visiting this site causes us to get porn junk-mail.

Fun fun.

Ryan! We just got like ten porn e-mails! Were you on that stupid fantasy site with all those older people you don't know again?
____________________________________

Oh. Right.

Well, luckily enough my mom tends to be rather liberal with what I do on the net. Come to think of it, I'm probably a lot luckier than I know. Oh well. :/Image

Yah, I know what you mean.

She noted something about nuances in voices, and I pointed out italics, bold, underlined, etc. I also mentioned emoticons, familiarity (we usually notice if someone's sarcastic), etc.

My Mum and Dad were never very technical people, but Mum loves to recieve e-mails from her sister in Queensland through me (she doesn't know how it all works, and her sister sends bloody chain-mails and crappy jokes, but hey, they're not really meant for me) the only problem she has is how the computer's on all the time and it uses up power!
-----------------------------------------------------

When I call people long distance, I generally buy a phone card with no connection fees. I've called as far as asia for 30 minutes with one of those. ^^;
|---------|

You know I think the net is growing more friendly. And I think you have to get involved with the right environment. Ezboard message boards, I've found have the nicest community's generally...although I'm still waiting for some more people to drop in and say hello on my board...
But it is a new technology as far as communications go so its not unexpected that parents would feel this way.

Damn... I guess I'm lucky that my parents are cool about people that I've known for more than a year over the net. Hell, my mom even let me call a friend in Atlanta, Georgia for half an hour with her free minutes on her cell phone, and I've known my friend for like 4 years online.

But that is probably from my parents letting my older brother fly out to meet some friends of his online for a week during the summer, and that was when he was 17 or so, which was like 6 years ago or something.

First off, my mom is a professional web designer (60 bucks an hour. I gotta learn HTML), so I can't sympathize with most of you. While I was at collage last year, she insisted I talk to her on AIM rather than on the phone cause it was cheaper.

Secondly, I worry about the checkout people at supermarkets more than people I talk to over the internet. Or cab drivers. What about getting jumped by someone while I'm walking down the street? Someone getting drunk, drifting across the median and ploughing into my parents Ford Taurus at a relative speed of 200 Kph on the highway and causing a fifteen car pileup. Besides, is a rapist/murder going to go through all the trouble of getting to know me, finding out where I live, catching a plane probably half way across north america at least, tricking me into meeting him/her in a discreet place just so he can kill me when there's perfectly good victims just walking down the street?

Lastly, I find that it takes as long to get to know someone online as it does to get to know poeple IRL. And it's easy to tell moods. When they're swearing, they're mad. When they're not, they're fine.

In conlcusion, your stepmom is ignorant.

I think Brian and Mike might be onto something.

But honestly, they DO have a point. Though when you get to know people, you can tell how they're feeling. Sometimes.

Or you could be like those strange people that can just feel out a situation to tell how people are feeling, and seeing how I do it over the net quite alot, it's not like people can't tell how people feel online.

...So shut the fuck up, wankers.

My mom is really cool about it... She is in some sort of chatroom/email group that she joined a while back. So she really doesn't mind that I talk to you all.

And, I think you do get that kinda feeling when youve talked to a person for long enough. It is like magic, only not.
Image
