This has been discussed in my Debate class before.

If I'm not mistaken, a lot of the Affirmative argument went to marijuana becoming a government-controlled crop and thus helping to fund the country.

I don't believe this point has been brought up yet. Not that I necessarily agree, I'm apathetic about this issue. Oh, and no comment on LMB's statement.

See? AM said

It'd be better off as a controlled substance like tobacco, with age limits--and then they could make money off it through taxes instead of drug dealers and illicit black market salesmen pocketing the funds.

That was all the way back to the third post and then

EKDS said

Again with the hypocrisy. Cigarettes are worse for you, because a) you don't get high, you just get a craving for them, and b) you smoke more, and your chances of lung cancer are much greater. But it's okay to sell them, because it's a cash crop. By that logic, we have to legalise marijuana, because the government could make a killing off of it.

And yes I was incredibily bored to do this ^_^

Though making something legal just cause you'll get lots of money of it "irks" me its still a very valid argument. Not one I agree with, but valid none the less.

*shrugs* Whee

Oh yeah EKDS also said:

Quote:
As probably the only person on the board who actually has any experience with marijuana

Which is a lie ={{ But he wasnt to know but he assumed it anyway but he already talked on that point and if I was just a little more bored I'd quote that too but I ain't, thankfully.

And I'll stop editing this now as doing this on the disgussion forum when bored isn't the best way to make friends and influence people and get on T.V. and makes millions of pounds though it is a good way of using and a lot in one sentance that just drags on and on and on and on.

Ah, I see.

.. chalk that up to my lack fo attention on this topic. >_> The funny thing is, their argument for the legalization of prostitution ran along the lines of the same point.

As did the arguments to legalize gambling, smoking, and alchohol, I'm sure.

Not because "Why not"

Unread postby Mechanisto » Tue Jun 17, 2003 2:26 pm

This is the wrong question. Wether or not legal enforcement is effective is completely unrelated to wether or not various drugs *should* be legal. The question is "why should it be legal?"

Why should a material that distorts human perception and confuses mental processes be made legal? What possible physical or biological advantage would such a material have to offer before it becomes 'worth the risk'? Even medically perscribed drugs or steroids can pose a serious threat.

A medicine that induces hallucinations or perceptual problems probably won't have an easy time of being passed by the FDA as a safe and reliable medication. The benefits would have to be pretty notable. And marijuana has no striking advantages that cannot be obtained through other methods.
---

By that logic, booze shouldn't be kept legal. Or cigarettes, for that matter. The only reason they haven't been taken off the market is because people make a good deal money off of them, despite their negative effects on anyone who uses them.

.... and the fact that some people enjoy drinking and find it a nice way to socialise and others find smoking relaxing etc.
