Re: Alistair, available at

It is undeniably girly. Meant to be played by girls. And those who do not mind appearing girly.

Yet it delights the cockles of my chibi heart!

Woah, a dating sim where you play as a girl, and it's not some kind of lesbian fantasy aimed at dudes?

...oh wait it wasn't actually made in Japan. That explains it.

Dude, you ever played Tokimeki Memorial: Girl's side?

Yeah, didn't think so.

Neither have I (sadly) but most of what I find advertised when I look for English translations tend to be targeted for a (horny) male audience, even with a female main character. There are some here and there, but they are the exception rather than the rule.

From the subtitle, I can only assume that's a spin-off of a more traditional male-oriented dating sim series.

And after a cursory study of Wikipedia...

Yep, I was right. Looks like it took them them 8 years to decide to try something crazy like looking at women as a potential audience rather than as soft, aesthetically pleasing pets.

Well, from actually OWNING the game (don't ask me why), I can inform you that Girl's side is basically about the same as the usual stuff, except you need to go shopping for outifts, make them match the guy and each other, and there's also a "poking" system with the DS that let's you tug at neckties, plasters, etc.

Still you manage to put a negative spin on it, BW. I suspect there is an underlying reason for this dislike of the Japanese not founded in their sexually biased datingsims and skewered, albeit hardly ethnically unique look on women as objects.

And as an added edit, I would just like to point out that Josei comics have had a long and happy life being targetted for women. Just sayin'.

Hey man, all cultures have their good and their bad, not to mention their own definitions for what good and bad even mean. Japan is an ancient culture steeped in tradition, but as such they tend to be kind of socially conservative. They're on top of the world in things like customer service, robotics, awesome horrible pranks, medicine, and random displays of incredible physical prowess. But have you seen their porn? A lot of it is impossible to get into. Could we please have women who look like they're actually enjoying themselves instead of just being fondled (or worse) by a bunch of random guys (or worse) and emitting irritating high-pitched squeals?

Hopefully I don't need to defend myself by pointing out that it is impossible to judge an entire culture based on the quality of their porn.

Anyway, by "them" in my last post, I wasn't referring to Japan as a whole, I specifically referring to... uhh...

*another quick glance at Wikipedia*

Konami, apparently. Huh. Looks like the first game was actually written by Koji Igarashi. Now there's a shocker.

Yeah, I get where you're coming at, I just feel the need to point out that there are many westerners who find these type of games enjoyable, and with a population of over 130 millions, there is bound to be porn of all kinds. Tijuana donkey shows anyone? Having been part of the furry community during a few years of my life, I've seen stuff drawn and written that would curdle your innards, and that group of people are mostly American, just saying that if you turn over a few rocks you're bound to find crazy shit, the Japs are just (a little too much) more openly selling it... or it just becomes a little too available for the westerners? I dunno.

Anyway, I have the game because it was the only Tokimeki Memorial available for the DS, and I wanted it to practice my Japanese (since I was a fan of the series).

Generally, I don't think fucked up Japanese smut is more fucked up than fucked up Western smut. I'm not a scholar on the subject, but it seems like, statistically, there's a slightly greater percentage of it in Japan, and it's significantly easier to find.

This is where I'll point out, as a member of the furry community that is still active, that we aren't mostly American; It's that the portion that speaks English and doesn't ban access to it's servers to foreign nations is mostly American. There's a smattering everywhere else that also speaks English, and the majority after all of that seems to be in Japan, Korea, and China, in that order. Japan is still in the lead there. Probably because the tamer offshoots/relations to furry culture are more socially acceptable in their media (graphic novels, cartoons, movies... anywhere you've seen a cat-girl/other-girl/the rare -boy).

I won't argue that the Japanese furry community isn't as big if not bigger than the North American one, but I would like to point out that most of the artists I've encountered and actually know about are all American/Canadian except one, who's British. I've seen a few Japanese things, but I don't really know.

As for the matter of accessibility, I'd say that's because the things that are profitable to market outside Japan obviously get exported. There's a big difference in observing the export market, and the specialized Convention Doujinshi-markets like Comiket, and living in Japan. I guess it's kind of the same with furry smut, there's a whole lot more in those communities than just that, but it's the loudest, most explicit people that stick out the most.

I take on a role of Japan's defender here, even though to be honest I agree with you that there's weird, crazy shit in that country, but it's also where stuff like Haibane Renmei, Figure 17, Record of Loddoss War, Genshiken, and so on came from, and I have never encountered storytelling of that magnitude as such a commonplace commodity (except perhaps in Don Rosa Uncle Scrooge comics)

Should I feel bad that we've completely hijacked this topic and haven't mentioned the game Lys mentioned since post 2?

I'm not trying to put Japan as a whole on trial here. Not even the entirety of their entertainment. I thoroughly enjoyed Azumanga Daioh, Cowboy Bebop, Vision of Escaflowne, and Great Teacher Onizuka, and I'm currently getting into Baccano!. I enjoy Japanese comedy almost as much as I enjoy British comedy. I'm just not entirely comfortable with their gender/sexuality issues. A more charitable person might look at J-pop dudes dressing in Gothic Lolita fashion or caricatures like Hard Gay and say "Well, isn't that progressive?" but to me, it all feels like Kabuki theater. All flash and posturing. I don't get the impression that they would, on the whole, actually respect a gay man, or a man that wanted to actually be a woman instead of just wanting to look like one because women are pretty. And related to that, I don't get the impression that they actually respect women, at least not as much as men. Now, this is certainly not unique to Japanese culture, but their obsession with cuteness, youth, obedience, innocence, annoyingly high-pitched voices and other qualities associated with young girls instead of adult women is a bit more uniquely Japanese. I've always been kinda creeped out by that.

And I'm really pissed off at how "moe" anime is getting. I keep hearing that Lucky Star is a really good show, but every time I see it I want to punch myself in the face. I miss the oldschool stuff like Record of Lodoss War and Bubblegum Crisis.

Actually, Lucky star is one of the few shows with moe-blob design that I actually enjoy, because it doesn't seem to take itself very seriously, and covers topics I funny, but I agree with you, stuff like K-On and Kodomo no Jikan is pretty shitty overall, but thankfully the bubble's burst, and there's been a major downcut in anime production this year, which I hope will mean there will be more interesting shows. I kind of like Spice & Wolf, and Haruhi s2 was okay except for Endless Hate buuuut...

Yeah, I actually have nothing to say about Japanese views on women, civil rights and gender discrimination that wouldn't be an outright fabrication. They have a pretty shitty system overall, and it could definitely use improvement. VAs like Yukari Fukui (look her up) are typical examples of how "feminine" women are voiced, and I find her to be dreadfully annoying and over-the-top cutesy. 'course, a lot of women with slightly deeper voices get to play young men.

Also, I shall endeavour to actually try the game :O

Bes, he lives on the North American continent.

To us Europeans, that means he's American.

By that token, I should refer to Denmark as Sweden from now on.

(That's because there are none; Only Americans can possibly be stupid or ignorant, you see.)

Of course they're Swedish, it would be preposterous to suggest the Danish pigs are not subjugated by us, their Swedish masters.
